Snow Falls (2023)
Massive plot holes, good other stuff
The people giving this a 1 need to spend more time watching more independent movies. I guess it's all relative.
As stated by others the plot holes are glaring. Just so bad. The one not mentioned yet that stood out to me the most is that they still have gas going to the cabin... they light the stove with a match. Likely the water heater works the same way, but if not. They have unlimited warmth from the gas stove... rough writing.
THE GOOD
The psychological tension was good. (but hard to get into cause of those plot holes)
The acting was fine.
The directing, the editing seemed fine. I'm no expert.
The music was GREAT! I noticed it right away and kept noticing it throughout the whole film.
Blight (2022)
Above average indie, excels in score and camera work
A bit of a rough start in my opinion, but once it got rolling I was very intrigued by the story. Camerawork and acting were great. The music kept the tension really well and stood out to me. The story has a bit of a Coherence vibe.
Father of Flies (2021)
Fairly well made movie, very poorly told story.
Fairly well made movie. As far as indies go it was above average in technical stuff and acting. Couldn't understand anything about characters or story.
Autumn Road (2021)
Solid Indie Effort
One of the other reviews claims to "love low budget horror" and then gave this movie a 2. They obviously don't actually watch indie and low budget movies, because Autumn road is leagues above what I consider a 2.
Acting, sounds, camera, directing, all better than an average indie. The story has soul but i agree with others that it is slow and a bit incoherent at times. BUT it's a well written s tory with well written characters. Likely someone's passion project.
I would also point out that it is much more drama than horror.
Things Fall Apart (2017)
Some style no substance?
I couldn't finish it. I watched a good 25 mins into it on tubi and it seemed to have no point at all. Maybe this is what mumblecore drama is supposed to be? Never heard of it.
I watch some bad movies, so not finishing this is saying something. On the good side this was technically better than most bad movies i watch. Such as acting and camera work. So there's that if you want to check it out.
Les animaux anonymes (2020)
Needs character
I know they were not going for subtlety here, but at the very least they could have tried to give me a character to connect to.
Instead the movie just seems to show an event of hunting and butchering animals, but with the roles reversed. The humans act like animals (mostly cowering and breathing heavy), and the animals like humans. In my opinion it would have been more potent to have the humans still behaving human, which would then make us think "Hey, maybe animals are more like us than we think." but nah, just reinforces what I already thought about animals.
Anyway, not a poorly made movie, i liked the camera work. Just not my style of storytelling i suppose.
The Rizen: Possession (2019)
Watch the Rizen 2017 first
Technically better than the first. Though can't be watched as a stand alone. Watch The Rizen from 2017 and then watch this one. Better than your average Indie Horror. Especially when it comes to writing and acting.
The Rizen (2017)
Fun and unique
I don't really know where the line is drawn and things become "indie" but i imagine this is lower budget. Acting was great, writing was creative. I wasn't keen on the choice for the old school looking filter on the camera shots, but whatever. Fun "indie" find. In the realm of, but much better than what used to be called "Straight to VHS".
Kolskaya sverhglubokaya (2020)
Isolation / creature horror from russia
Too much hate! Good characters with interesting motivations, shot well, good music, great fx and sets, descent story (action / monster movie soo.. you know) acted well thought the strange dubbing was very distracting. Has it's flaws but there was some obvious thought put into writing and producing this.
A Werewolf in England (2020)
Campy Slap Stick Horror
This film was super campy, slap stick horror. I enjoyed it! The acting, photography and score were much higher quality than I've come to expect as i trudge my way through horror movies rated below 4.0 on IMDB. The really low reviews must not have understood what they were watching. It's goofy and gory, no real scares, but lots of fun and it built tension better than most.
Would recommend to fans of Evil Dead.
Beneath (2013)
Creature feature that is better than it's current 3.7 suggests
This movie doesn't blow you away, but it has an actual hand built monster in it! Along with the monster, the characters reactions to their life or death situation are better than most low budget horror movies by far. Writing and acting are just fine too. Worth watching if you are a fan of horror.
The Pond (2021)
Confusing does not mean insubstantial.
Some stiff acting, that to me felt intentional. Great visuals and camera work. In my opinion, this story is a great concept that went beyond my expectations of "hallucinations" that are often done in these types of movies. Not a movie for the casual viewer, certainly worth the watch if you like strange films and the occult.
Death Trip (2021)
Better than the average low budget horror i run into these days.
Good writing, acting, camera work, direction. I agree with some of the others that the pacing and soundtrack were weaknesses (imo) some of the plot points could have been hinted at or mixed in earlier, but it's absolutely worth watching if you're looking for underground indie horror films.
