JFK (1991)
Interesting look at one of the most analyzed stories of history
Oliver Stone's JFK is a good film comprising of many stars. This is a political thriller relating to the events that led to the assassination of President John F Kennedy. Even though many films and books have been made on this subject Stone is talented enough to not make this movie feel or look stale. Kevin Costner plays the lead attorney general Garrison who is hell bend on finding the cause behind the great calamity of November 1963. This is a strong performance by an actor who isn't a very good actor. Kevin Bacon is also good in a small role as is Tommy Lee Jones. The English actor Gary Oldman plays Lee Harvey Oswald and there is a physical bearing that cannot be denied between the two men. If you are a fan of political movies and enjoy thrillers there's a lot to appreciate about Stone's film. On the other hand if the JFK subject holds no passion for you, and long films are a chore (and this one is) then JFK wouldn't be the best of choices.
Melancholia (2011)
Awesome film filled with images that will leave an imprint
Melancholia is a fantastic work by controversial auteur Lars Von Trier. The story takes place around the wedding of a depressed woman. The usual family drama ensues, and nothing is as robust as it appears. Of course there is also a giant planet about to hit Earth very soon. This film looks gorgeous and the cinematography is exceptional- every frame looks like a painting. The acting by everyone from Keifer Sutherland to Charlotte Gainsburg is very good but the standout is main lead Kirsten Dunst. This is as mainstream as Von Trier can get and I suggest you check this film out to understand why he is considered so important in world cinema.
One Week (2008)
decent Canadian flick
What is wrong with Canadian films? One Week is a Canadian film about a man who has just been diagnosed with cancer and he decided to take a cross country ride to figure some things out. Many people claim that Canadian movies are boring and they have a point- this film tends to lag, there is something I cannot put my fingers on but the film seems dull. Joshau Jackson is competent though this isn't a role that requires charisma and energy- quite the opposite actually. The soundtrack is good and the scenery more than makes up for the proceedings. Give it a shot if you haven't seen Canadian films.
Over the Top (1987)
A decent truckers movie with Sly as the lead
Over the Top was made when Sly Stallone was the top dog in town which meant he could have any film made he wanted. Over the Top is probably the result of Sly's ego dictating the terms. This isn't a bad movie but just an alright one about a trucker(played by Sly) who wishes to get close to his kid- who sort of doesn't like him, as they go about on a road trip of sorts. There are some nice scenery and lets be honest- Stallone has that face, or perhaps its his eyes- which make you wanna root for him, and feel sorry for him. This is a decent film to watch, especially if you wanna go through Stallone's filmography but it isn't a great Stallone movie.
Iron Man (2008)
The rebirth of Robert Downey Jr.
Iron Man is a great superhero movie and sadly the reason there was an explosion of superhero films back then which never seems to end. As a standalone this is a great film about Tony Stark and his origins. Played superbly by Robert Downey Jr. and ably assisted by Jon Favreau Iron Man seems like a derelict of the past when viewed through the lens of 2018. But this straightforward no nonsense tale about a wisecracking billionaire tech genius will keep you enthralled.
The Big Picture (1989)
An underrated film which needs to be rediscovered
This is an underrated Kevin Bacon movie about the film industry that should be seen by way more people than it has. Kevin Bacon plays a talented film student who is soon grabbed by a studio as he makes it big. However, his success makes him arrogant and leave the people who once cared for him and vice versa. Classic tale of redemption ensues but the film has many highlighted scenes including a fun music video starring the underrated Jennifer Jason Leigh who made being a hipster popular way before the term was even invented.
Racing Extinction (2015)
Great documentary-a must watch
This is a must watch for anyone remotely interested in sustainability or other issues related to Global warming and the future. Even if you aren't an environmentally conscious person you should watch it to realize how much the media sways us. (Great documentary-a must watch).
The Taking (2014)
Avoid it and rent The Exorcist instead
Docu films are passe and even if they aren't they should be exceptionally well made- which The Taking of Deborah Logan is not. At least Paranormal activity managed to be scary but this film proves that the home video/documentary horror should be buried six feet under. (Avoid it and rent The Exorcist instead).
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
Best gift for a Tolkein nut or even if you are not
The Lord of the Rings shows that talent and vision go a long way. Peter Jackson has taken the responsibility to bring one of the most daunting (and beloved) books on the screen and it is a success. The fellowship of the rings starts are the saga and we are introduced to all the beloved characters from the Tolkein books. The cinematography, art design, editing- everything is top notch and you feel as though you are transported to hobbit land. Watch this film to understand the art of cinema(Best gift for a Tolkein nut or even if you are not)
