Notting Hill (1999)
Cringeworthy plot
Recently watched this movie, and this movie hasn't aged well. Its cringeworthy for current day standards. Very cliché Hollywood film and not quite believable, which takes alot of the credibility away from the movie. It was a hard watch altogether. An actress falls in love with a random guy she barely knows within minutes, I mean even for Hollywood standards the plot is quite too flimsy. The side kicks were very one sided caricatures, to a point that I truly believe that the supporting actors were not actual real people in the movie, but those are the lead actor schizophrenic imaginary friends, all representing one part of the protagonist thought process. Even any random Disney movie has more credible plot than that.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Cowboy wild west space opera meets seventh samurai
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. It was visually engaging, beautiful actors, and balanced perfectly well between a bigger than life space opera action movie but with a slight cheeky nod to all the other galactic space movies and even some references to the seventh samurai in gathering a group of gunho bunch of heroes. Stylistic it was well edited and payed good attention to detail and comedic effects. Actors sounded mostly european, as I figured that was probably the intention to do so, to give the movie a bit of a film noir cyberpunk styl of vibe, like they did in the movie 5th element or Valerian. All in all it was a pleasant watch and I am eager to watch the second installment of this, well done!
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
Epic Emotional Rollercoaster
I heard good reviews about this. And usually when reviews that are this good, it is bound to be overhyped. But I gave it a try anyhow to see if it lives up to the hype. Not going to lie, it started off kind of messy, and I had a hard time following the story switching between the english and chinese language. The scenes in the first half of the movie appeared incoherent and it was hard to understand what was going on. But then I discovered that this incoherence was consistent, like some mathematical constant and came to realization that maybe I should not approach this movie with logic and I should not try so hard to understand it, but rather let the movie take you in for the ride and get into it for the sensation of it all and see where it goes. And oh my, how it delivered. I wasn't expecting such an epic emotional rollercoaster experience, even with all the crazy over the top things happening on screen, it blended very well together. It literally included everything, everywhere, all at once that you ever wanted in a movie. This was a masterpiece of a movie. Instant timeless classic, and topics touched upon that are very relevant for our times. This also shows you that representation matters! It gives us a whole range of new and interesting perspective and content we never knew we wanted! My compliments for the script writers and producers for giving us this gem of a movie and it certainly lived up to the hype and more!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
No More Star Wars for me......
This was it. I am not paying my money for another Star Wars movie ever again. Fell for it twice! Not anymore. Discovered disney is just in it for the money, and not for the franchise or artistic value. People who made Rogue One had heart and made it with passion and respect for the franchise. Do you think we audiences are fools and can be cheated this way!? You must have known it's going to end somewhere, sometime. If you think you can stretch this into enternity then think again, its over and right now. The storyline of Force Awakens and Last Jedi makes even the Star Wars prequels look good! And that is not a compliment, in case you wondered....
Kong tian lie (2017)
Impressive Chinese Action Blockbuster Film!
Sky Hunter is a decent action flick up to par with Hollywood popcorn blockbusters, which is impressive!
Not sure why people brand it as a propaganda movie. A little double standard is taken into account when handling chinese military movies, it's kind of sad. I think people dont know what propaganda means anymore. Propaganda is information that is used to mislead and influence the public opinion in favor of for example a political standpoint.
I see no portraying of propaganda none whatsoever in this movie. This movie even admits that China has no modern real life combat experience. What military propaganda admits their disadvantage? Also this movie promotes peace over war, and that the military should be only used for national security and defense and not for terror. If advocating peace and non intrusive military is propaganda, then I welcome this propaganda anytime!
Other than that this movie shows brotherhood, comradeship, romance and love. It was entertaining from beginning to end, and the fairly unknown actors (except for Fan Bingbing the female protagonist, which is a superstar in China!) did a pretty good job acting out their characters. The Villains were convincing. The fighter jet dogfight scene, John Woo style showdown shooting fest in mid-air was memorable, though not realistic, but hey its a movie!
The scene where the two fighter jet pilots exchanged words through their intercom while flying next to each other and daring each other out, is a scene I have never seen before in any action movie and may very well be an instant classic!
Zhan lang II (2017)
Non stop action packed that tops any Hollywood movie in recent years!
This was a well made action movie with original action sequences that is up to par and in some parts even exceeds any Hollywood action movie we have seen in years! It appears like your everyday action flick, but as you progress it feels fresh and nothing like you have ever seen before. You are taken on a roller coaster ride from start to end, deep into some unnamed African country.
I don't know why people necessarily brand this as propaganda and as a Chinese nationalistic movie. When did Hollywood ever not using nationalism in their action movies? It's full of it! When Hollywood does it, it's considered cool, but when China does it, it's called brainwashing propaganda? Thats a wee little bit hypocrite.....
Parts of the movie are based on live events as some African nations are indeed scorned with internal tribal wars and viral epidemics. As for China has numerous investments in Africa for the past decades, the impact of internal African turmoils on Chinese businesses is evident and real. Recently China even established a military base in the African continent, and Chinese navy patrols African seas regularly to protect commercial shipments from robbery.
So even though this movie is a popcorn over the top action flick, it is actually inspired by current day events and the impact it has on Chinese merchants in Africa.
But looking past the political backdrop, it is just a darn well made action movie that deserves its recognition and should run in mainstream theaters worldwide!
