The Switch (2010)
A horrible attempt at making a sweet time-pass
This movie was way too bad than my expectations.
This is the story of loser guy (Bateman ) and his friend Aniston's relationship when they unknowingly make a child. Aniston actually selected a guy after auditioning many ( though shown none ) for sperm donation, and Bateman being drunk that night replaces it with his own.
There is no script in this movie and the performance average and annoyingly fleeting. Though there may be some maudlin quirks, but in vain to capture one's interest. It might be a good popcorn movie if you concentrate on the popcorn.
Don't watch this; I wouldn't have if I was sober.
Dôruzu (2002)
A quaint fable of love and despair
Kitano never fails to amaze me, and this movie is an exact epitome of the queer nature of his films. This movie is a collection of three love stories intersecting in the same time-line. The nature of love stories quite different from one-another and each one has a different essence to it.
First story is about a young couple, second story is about fan-idol love and the third one is about an unrequited love. All of these stories are somber and moving, and are not as mushy as typical love stories of Hollywood.
Cinematography in the film is awesome. There many long shots, which again is kind of Kitano's signature. Performance of the actors is quite good. Background score is beautiful and perfectly coherent with the scenes. The use of a puppet show in the movie is quite surreal and symbolic.
If you liked "Amorres Perros"; you will definitely like this movie.
A must watch for Kitano fans and those who admire subtle romance.
Wonderful Days (2003)
A post-apocalyptic love story
The world is destroyed due to war, pollution and I don't know what. But that's not important, because the point is that; the world is re-seeded into something much precarious and hopeless existence than today's extravagant and frivolous society. When the rain is toxic and earth barren; sky as dark as the imminent doom hovering the fate of human society. The last standing city Ecoban which is the nearest hope one can expect, is home to people who dominate and rule the stray living outside the city. These people called diggers are employed and exploited by the Ecobans to do their digging. A rebel group arises among these diggers threatening the destruction of Ecoban.
The main protagonist of the movie Shua is a scientist exiled from Ecoban years ago, living among diggers, plotting to destroy Ecoban. His childhood friend Jay still lives in Ecoban and she is now fighting to bring down the rebels which brings them on opposite sides in this conflict.
Though the plot is simple, the backdrop of the story is beautiful and surreal. The animation is quite good, for you should watch this movie just for that. A somber mood throughout the movie gives it a somewhat unique feel among other post-apocalyptic stories. If you liked "Vexille" then you will like this one too.
A must watch for sci-fi animation movie fans.
Inception (2010)
If you dream inside a dream and wake up, you'r still dreaming !
The movie is about manipulation of dreams and how it can impact a person's psyche. Caprio, in this movie is a kind of dream terrorist, who as a profession extracts information from people's mind. This is espionage of new times and he has become notoriously popular for this. However, for the last time when he undertakes a job of planting an idea into the mind of an heir to a giant business empire (Cillian Murphy ); things go wrong.
I am disappointed by the script. The movie is conceptually flawed. First of all, how can you dream inside a dream, I mean how one transitions into next level of 'sleepiness'. Even if one could, why the machine used to coordinate the dreams also appears the same in the dream and works also. Why one would age in a dream; I thought in a dream the appearance of oneself is the mental projection of the memory of oneself.
Same genre has been portrayed by "Paprika" beautifully and is much more consistent and meaningful than this version of a dream-control fantasy.
First act was a bit interesting, but the plot goes haywire towards the end; lost in an attempt to incorporate useless actions scenes. Ending was as terrible as one would expect after watching the trifling second act. Trying to give an inconclusive end was a bit pathetic after what has been done to original 'idea'. There was no 'original inspiration' in this movie. By the end of it, I was in level 5.
Certainly a bad one from Nolan. This not nearly as good as "Following" or "Prestige". No surreal element; twisting the city was a fleeting attempt though.
Watchable once and that too would be worthwhile only on a big screen.
Skyline (2010)
Strange lights descend from the night skies into the city. Everyone is drawn to this bright light helplessly.
I saw this movie last week in theater and was baffled because it exceeded my expectations of a low-budget science flick. Though the script is not elaborate, but the plot is coherent with the underlying theme. This doesn't have any big stars under it's basket, but I found it constructive to be this way, because many times the story is over-shadowed by the attention given to performance in a science-fiction which needs to be attentive to the plot. The CGI in this movie is not as breathtaking as 'cgi-oriented' Transformers; but the scenes are quite in sync with the plot. I found some scenes to be truly original in the sense, that they depict despair and apprehension in a beautiful way. The climax is quite good despite the slower second-act. If you are a fan of "Close encounters of the third kind", you'll find a similar feel of scare and anxiety in this one too. A must-watch for sci-fi fans!
