Guruvayoor Ambalanadayil (2024)
Didn't work for me
After seeing the interviews and the reviews from so called reviewers, and the hype it created because of the director- hero combo's next movie after the blockbuster 'Jaya jaya Jayahe', and because of the stellar cast, I was expecting a spectacular fun movie. And, ....alas!
For me, this movie didn't work at all. Seeing the hype, I was about to run to theater to see, but I am happy now as I didn't do so when it released in theaters. I really enjoyed Jaya Jaya Jayahe, however 'GAN' was a disaster for me. I felt that everyone trying too hard to evoke fun everywhere, but nothing makes any impact. Apart from some funny moments in the initial part of the movie, nothing really worked for me in the fun-laugh department.
Overall, a one time watch for me. This is the second super-hit movie that reviewers and everyone praised a lot, that didn't work at all for me... first, Varshangalku Shesham, and now this one...
Maidaan (2024)
Missed Opportunity
I am always a fan of sports movies, and even more fond of true biopic movies. When 'Maidaan' bombed at box office despite gaining positive opinions from so called reviewers, I was eagerly waiting to watch it out on OTT to see why it failed. After watching the movie yesterday, I am not at all surprised why it failed !
The movie is around 3 hours long. However I felt almost 2 hours of the movie is wasted on things that are less entertaining making the movie experience a tedious one, rather than an enjoyable one. I really liked the football scenes in the movie with some breath taking action on the ground, however the screen play lacks the much needed 'punch' at many occasions for a movie like this which portrays one of the epic period in Indian football ( really we were that good once upon a time, hard to believe seeing the current situation of Indian football). Personally, I felt the characterization of protagonist is somewhat bland and felt wanting more. If you are expecting a Dangal, Chak De India, etc. You will most probably disappointed like me as 'Maidaan' in my opinion is a movie with so much potential but couldn't achieve greatness.
Salaar: Part 1 - Ceasefire (2023)
Average... too much build up, lacking content.
I give 6/10 for the making, mass scenes, hero elevation, etc. But apart from that, the movie disappointed me as movie lover. It is foolish to look for logic in mass cinemas like these, however still ... it is better to give some importance to logic while creating a movie plot to make it more engaging to the viewers. If the hero can simply beat anyone and win any world war single handedly, then how can the story provide the much needed suspense and tension ?. For me, the first half was more interesting than the second half. The movie is almost around 3 hours and still 90% of the story is being said in some 10-20 minutes , wasting most of the time on giving build up to the hero, which could have been trimmed a lot. Also, I felt KGF-1 as more engaging, as it is the first of its kind giving a fresh feel to it, whereas after watching KGF-1 and KGF-2, the similar kind of setup and making is not any new to most of the viewers, which also make Salaar a average experience to movie watchers.
Philip's (2023)
Pain... Tears...Survival...Happiness...Family
One of the beautiful movies in Malayalam, most probably in Indian cinema as well. The most underrated movie. A simple story, with right emotions giving us all the inspiration to fight and survive our own battles. I wonder why such good films are under appreciated in our world. This movie stands really close to our real world scenarios and one can easily relate with to their life. There is no super hero, fight scene, masala, out of the box story ...and still it win our hearts with its cute and touchy moments. The songs are beautiful and also I am really happy to see the crew paying a fitting tribute to one of the best actors in Malayalam movie. The casting is perfect and everyone deserves an applause to being a part of this movie. Must watch..
RDX: Robert Dony Xavier (2023)
Expected a lot...
Watched the movie in OTT just now. I was hearing all superb reviews for RDX, so was expecting a visual treat. Haven't watched a memorable movie for a so long time, so was hopeful, that RDX is going to fill that void. The movie started well, and then go on and go on and ...finally end. What to say!!! Hmmm...one thing is sure! My wait for the kiddilan movie continues..., RDX couldn't meet my expectations. It failed miserably to satisfy the hype it created in my mind. I see many saying this is a must watch in theater. May be since I watched it in OTT, or may be the expectations were high... not sure what went wrong in this case. What I felt is, the movie lacks a great story, the plot is good, but couldn't develop into something really great ( for me) after showing potential. After some point, it is all action.. one after another with no real plot in between...stunt after stunt.. even then, the stunt choreography couldn't fully engage me as a viewer. The climax is ok, but felt still lacking. Overall, a average movie for me.
Ayisha (2023)
Not impressed...
Ok First Half and a Boring Second Half. The movie started well. The plot was giving some resemblance with Dileep's 'Spanish Masala'. The making was impressive, the shots were superb, the shots of the palace were really extravagant, the songs were good...However, after giving hope, the movie lost its momentum, became tedious and finally ended in a dull manner. The climax was too predictable and not appealing to me. Also, the characters extensively speak Arab, Tamil languages, and no subtitles were provided, which also affected the movie watching in a bad way. Overall, a one-time watchable movie, especially for the extravagant cinematography.
2018 (2023)
Emotionally excellent, However...
The movie is a great watch for any Malayali who experienced and has gone through those tough times in 2018. We could easily say '2018' is one of the best survival films made in Malayalam movie industry. However...I felt the movie could have been made better. '2018' is a blockbuster and worked very well with malayali audience, because of the emotions it generate and the experience the common people can relate to, during the floods in 2018. So to judge just the movie as it is, assume the floods had never happened in Kerala; if so, will '2018' as a flood-survival-movie could create such a heavy impact among the viewers? I doubt. Also, there are many details, reasons, questions, doubts the movie had ignored or underdeveloped. Many of the characters are also not complete or felt lacking...for example, the stories involving Kunchacko, Vineeth, Aparna are all under-utilized.
And some of the scenes felt very silly too. For example, the scene of airlift, where the pilot initially call off the airlift saying "Unsafe to land"!!!...I just wonder, why can't one of the army personnel himself do the airlifting themselves? Why do they need to depend for an external help. Aren't they well trained and equipped for such scenarios or for even difficult circumstances to operate on their own without any external help?... I felt no logic in that scene.
The thriller scenes are good and the music, bgm also worked very well to elevate such scenes. However, many of the scenes in the night was difficult to watch due to low lighting (it was a struggle for me to see what was really happening !).. Overall, 2018 is good movie, but not satisfying to the hype for me... ( this is just my opinion after watching the movie)
Varisu (2023)
Cliche, Nothing fresh to offer
Varisu failed to offer anything fresh for the viewers. The story is too predictable and have seen it already in a lot of movies, making it a mediocre movie for me. It is high time Vijay should try something different to wow the viewers. For an example, Thuppakki was a Vijay-movie which was neatly written with a tight plot and a thrilling story which was engaging from start to finish, and I liked it a lot that time. I miss that freshness in Vijay movie nowadays and all his recent films were too predictable with nothing new to offer. I wish next time Vijay comes with a movie which is a treat to movie lovers. Have high expectation in LK's Leo, hope it works well for the viewers.
Mahaveeryar (2022)
Technically Brilliant, But..
The movie is technically brilliant, unfortunately, couldn't meet to the expectations. The film's plot is kind of a time travel, however the much needed explanations and relevant details are missing which affect the overall movie experience in a significant way. I really wonder whether the viewers were able to understand the whole movie and what message (!) it conveys. Really liked the technical elements, the making, music, and most of the things, however as a whole movie, it failed to satisfy. Also felt the story is confusing and some dialogues from certain characters needs clarity. Overall, a good effort, but missed the mark.
Mukundan Unni Associates (2022)
King of Black-humor
We have seen a lot of 'Nanma-Maram' kind of movies, However MukundanUnni takes us in the exact opposite path, still very enjoyable. I liked the movie, it is black-humor at its best, so definitely not everyone's cup of tea. The best thing happened for this movie is Vineeth Sreenivan, he just lived as the character and is a perfect cast for the role. Overall, a superb movie with stellar performance from everyone. You can feel the freshness from start to end; 'MukundanUnni Associates' is definitely a big relief from all the template 'Hero is a Saint' kind of movies that get release in our movie industry all the time. It is different, daring, intelligent, thought-provoking and above all, top class black-humor at its very best.
Saudi Vellakka (2022)
Relevant. But as a movie, not impressed
The movie deals with a very relevant topic and it is portrayed realistically. The reality is shown with 100% sincerity. However as a movie watch watcher, did I like it? Sadly, no. The movie is too slow and painfully dragging. The background noise is good at some occasions, whereas at several instances felt unpleasant. Also, too many cross talking between characters, background noises, too many unwanted characters here and there, etc. Makes the movie-watching a very unpleasant experience for me. May be those elements were added deliberately for getting the perfection, however at some point felt those a bit too much for me! Overall, the movie is a good effort in drawing our attention towards a very serious flaw in our system, however as a movie lover, failed to impress me due to 'too much' realistic elements.
Gold (2022)
Good for OTT, Bad for theater
I liked the movie even though it has a wafer thin plot with too many silly unwanted brainless characters in it. I watched it in OTT hearing it was a flop, so I was able to watch it without the burden of high expectations, and because of it I found it interesting and engaging to some extent. The movie lacks the final kick-ass punch, apart from it 'Gold' is quite watchable and satisfying than many other 'so-called good movies' in recent times. The songs were good and apt to the situation. The nature elements showing here and there are ok, but found somewhat overly used at some occasions. Overall, a simple movie to time pass on a sofa on your free time. IMO, never recommend this for a theater experience as I don't see any point taking the effort and money to watch such a silly movie in a theater (especially in this tough economic situation)
Ponniyin Selvan: Part One (2022)
Not Entertained
I don't understand how this movie gets an IMDB rating over 8 and what is the logic behind all the hype and rave reviews here. I completely failed to get entertained watching this movie. I just watched it to see till the end, that's it. The movie has a stellar cast, but the making is very mediocre and sleep inducing. The story is not very complicated as many said, however the screenplay and dialogues are so confusing that it is very difficult for a movie watcher to follow it. To be frank, I even doubt whether this is really a Maniratnam movie, because I couldn't find anything special in it. Maybe it got focused on too many characters and nothing really sticked to create a 'wow' factor when the movie ended except last credit scene of 5 seconds (!). For some reason, I felt the dialogues of the characters too poetical that the film is losing the much needed seriousness it requires at many places. The VFX looks silly at several places for a movie made on a budget of over 400 crores. The only positive for me is the female characters, as they all look stunning especially Trisha and Aishwarya Rai. Vikram has very few screen space compared to Karthi and Jayam Ravi, and I hope he will get a bigger part to play in PS-2. Overall, a very unsatisfactory experience watching PS-1.
Makal (2022)
'Blah'
They made a movie with a half baked script and end result is a utter flop movie. Honestly, this is a watchable movie, but it ends abruptly without a memorable climax, so a big disappointment. Seems the writer has no idea how to end it, so introduced a twist to introduce some character from thin air and made a small preach (as usual in sathyan anthikad movies, but in an unconvincing boring way) and ended 'blah'.
Malayankunju (2022)
A tedious watch. Not my cup of tea!
In simple words, first half is 'ok', and second half is just 'meh'. Overall an exhausting watch. I watched it knowing this is a survival movie, and still didn't like it; just watched it till the end just to finish it; a very tiring watch. For me, this is only a OTT watch, and would be curious whether this really attract people in theater. Because at the end, I along with my family just said the same thing, and that is " ithu Enthu cinimaya! "... and I am sure many will say the same. Strictly not everyone's cup of tea.
Kaduva (2022)
Average Flick.... Nothing great
To be frank, first half was engaging and second half is ok. But in totality, the movie fell flat short and couldn't give the satisfaction we expect from mass action movie like it. 'Kaduva' lacks the much needed depth in its script. The BGM was below average and songs were very ordinary making it another mediocre movie with nothing great to watch. The action is a big let down, and after some point, it gets pretty repetitive with no freshness.
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (2022)
Flawed, but hats off to the effort
The movie making is heavily flawed with pacing, screenplay and too many jargons; however Nambi's real life overshadowed its every flaws and made it a fitting tribute to one of greatest scientist of ISRO.
Dear Friend (2022)
Not impressed at all.
First 'Naradan', now 'Dear Friend', another Tovino movie ( which I watched) that fails me to impress. This movie is good at places, but in totality a disappointment to the viewers. The main drawback is the story of this movie has no depth and content. The story is good enough for a 10-20 minute short film, instead they dragged it into a movie. Overall, a one time watchable movie.
Vikram (2022)
Entertaining..
Engaging and Entertaining. First half belongs to Fahad, whereas in the second half, Kamal Hasan steals the show. The drawback to point out is the movie is full of violence when compared to 'Kaithi'.
Overall, an entertaining movie.
Major (2022)
Emotional and Powerful
Have seen a lot of similar movies, a lot in Malayalam itself ( Keerthichakra, Kurukshetra, etc). However, 'Major' stand out from all of these in a special way and really surprised me. 'Major' is able to make an emotional connection with the viewers which makes it the best when compared to other similar kind of movies. Emotions are all high and made me tears at the end, a must watch movie.
Keedam (2022)
A surprisingly well made movie. Highly Recommended
Watched with 0 expectation and 'Keedam' didn't disappoint. This might be a small film made on a small budget, but surprised me with a thrilling narration and an engaging plot. To make an entertaining film, there is no need for actors with star value and 'Keedam' is an example for it. Watch it, you won't get disappoint; it is much better than many of the overrated superstar movies.
Kuttavum Shikshayum (2022)
Want to sleep? Then watch it.
A very realistic movie with zero entertainment value. I would have been surprised if this become a hit at theaters. There is nothing engaging in the movie. The investigation plot is too realistic with zero cinematic elements which makes it a 'sleeping pill' for most of the viewers. Really wonder what is the point in making dull films like these with talented actors, when there is no way it could attract crowd to the theaters to get the money from it.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Not exaggerating...truly deserves 10/10
One of the best movie I watched in my life. The best in 2022 for sure. Worth every penny. Must watch in theaters to appreciate how well they made the movie (especially the flight scenes). My ever time favorite actor with my my ever time favorite actress, Tom Cruise - Jennifer Connolly combination was another reason to love it.. overall, I like this one even far more than the previous one. First time, I rate a sequel better than its predecessor. Yup, they nailed it. Go and watch today itself...
CBI 5 (2022)
Not satisfied.
This would have been ok (may be), if it got released atleast two decades back; but in 2022 with varieties of masterpiece thrillers releasing here and there, CBI5 looks very dull and ordinary. Felt this is the weakest among all the CBI series movies so far. The only touching moment in this movie is Jagathy's cameo, and I hope they named this movie from Iyers' dialogue then "his brain is still vibrant", because could not find any other reason for giving a name 'The Brain'. Overall, a one time watchable forgettable movie.
Twenty One Grams (2022)
Climax is the king. Brilliant
We, film enthusiasts keep guessing who is the 'Killer' from beginning till the end while watching an investigation thriller, and most of the times we found it before the climax and the thrill is gone by the end. However, '21 Grams' brilliantly hide it and delivered a kickass punch at the end, and that makes this thriller one of the best in Malayalam film industry.
