Abbott Elementary (2021)
I Love This Show!
I love this show! So much humour is packed into 30 minutes. At first I thought this show was just going to be silly, but boy was I wrong! It is in its fourth season, and I just watched episode one. It was freaking hilarious! I wanted to stop and rewind the especially funny parts...which was every few minutes. After I watched the first episode of season 4, I wanted to immediately watch it again, and I would have if my internet was not so darn slow.
I do not know how Quinta Brunson does it! She was also hilarious on "A Black Lady Sketch Show" and I was sad when she did not return for the second season, but I am glad it was so she could pursue other projects.
I am grateful for Quinta Brunson, Issa Rae, Ava DuVernay and so many other Black creatives that are too numerous to name. Finally, TV and movies are rich and worth watching. 👍🏿
The Love Club: Lauren's Dream (2023)
Fun Movie
I enjoyed this movie. It is a refreshing change to see Black middle class characters in leading roles, rather than only in supporting roles. In addition, it was good to see educated Black characters who have good jobs and live in good neighbourhoods. After all, not all of us are struggling and living in the projects.
This movie was a pick me up as I was feeling depressed and this added some lighthearted joy to my day.
I enjoyed the scene where daughter said she wanted a gender neutral birthyday party. It is the way of the future and needs to be embraced.
Most of the actors looked familiar to me and so did some of the locations in the movie.
Most of all, I liked that the movie had a happy ending.
Westworld (2016)
Utter Inhumanity! Will They Ever Learn?
I am on season 2. I enjoyed the first few episodes of season 1, but then it started to meander. I will continue to watch the show as long as I can, just to see how it ends.
So far it has me thinking a lot about a theme discussed in my high school literature class, "man's inhumanity to man". Though the "humans" in this show are mostly being inhumane to the hosts/robots/androids, these hosts/robots/androids look, sound, behave, and feel exactly like the "humans".
This show also makes me think of the savagery committed by european explorers, european settlers, and their descendants in how they treated Afrikan peoples and how they continue to treat their descendants. Just like they use, abuse, and exploit the hosts/robots/androids for their own selfish, savage, greedy, and carnal purposes, they did the same to the Afrikans they abducted, and they continue to do the same to their descendants, and Indigenous Peoples of the world, including when they travel abroad for the purposes of sex tourism! Will they ever learn?
Purple Hearts (2022)
Enjoyable
Overall I enjoyed this film.
I don't understand how americans in other people's countries are protecting america. American's want to be free to do whatever they want to do in america, and they also want to control and dictate what people, i.e., Iraqi's do in their own country. #hypocritical! Could you imagine in Iraqi's had soldiers doing tours in america?
I don't understand why the Marine's took the word of a drug dealer that the marriage was fake.
I don't understand why the rich and governments are allowed to defraud the country and run scams on the tax payers without consequences, but people who are struggling are criminalized and imprisoned for using the system to their advantage. Again more hypocrisy!
I thought the main characters were decent people and I am glad they decided to stay together.
Star Trek: Plato's Stepchildren (1968)
This episode imitates reality in 2022
Towards the end of the episode when Parmen did not get his way, he forced Alexander, Kirk, Spock, Uhura and Nurse Chapel to do things against their will.
It made me think of the things enslavers and modern day white supremacists did and continue to do to control Africans and descendants of Africans.
Proof that many in power do not deserve power especially since they got it through oppressing others and other illicit means; with said power they used it to derive pleasure and entertainment by brutalizing and torturing others.
Star Trek: Day of the Dove (1968)
Lessons for 2022 from 1968
This was a very interesting episode. Though this episode was made in 1968, it is very relevant in 2022, more than 50 years later.
After so-called Emancipation of enslaved Afrikans, the rich and elites saw that workers across so-called racial lines were organizing and resisting oppressive, exploitative work practices. So, they devised a plan to separate, divide, and weaken them. Business owners gave certain groups benefits and privileges while they oppressed, demonized, vilified, and criminalized other groups.
The rich and elites placed themselves at the top of the racial hierarchy, created by them, to manipulate non racialized workers into thinking racialized workers were dangerous and posed a threat; also giving non racialized workers false hope that one day they too could be rich.
The same is going on today, where those who have more privilege than others see those fighting for the same rights and privileges as dangerous, suspect, and criminal.
As with this episode, the Klingons and humans were being manipulated by an unseen and unknown alien which was making them fight against one another, while the alien watched entertained and absorbed their violent energy. Just like today where the non racialized are working in concert with the rich and elites to oppress the racialized, less privileged, and vilified classes to the detriment to us all.
It was not until the Klingons and humans worked together that they were able to drive out the evil alien force. Here on earth, the working classes need to work together to drive rich, alien beings, posing as humans into exile or we will be fighting until our extinction.
The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022)
A lot of Anti Black Violence
So far I watched the first episode and a bit of the second. There is a lot of anti Black violence and it is hard to watch!
In the first episode, two white cops taser the man who fell to earth, who just so happens to have Black skin. He was also threatened at gun point by what looked like a white supremacist. He was mocked at the police station by a white female cop, another form of violence. Later he was jumped and beaten severely by two rednecks.
In the second episode Faraday was slapped across the face by the guy who plays Thomas Newton and later he was slapped across the face by a white waitress.
The character who plays Spencer Clay was rude and kept gaslighting the Black waitress while his white friend Drew Finch sat, watched and laughed.
Though it is nice to see Black characters in lead roles, for a change, the violence they endure is not okay, as it teaches that it is okay to treat people of African descent in this inhumane, brutal, uncivilized manner.
A show where Black people are constantly beating up on white bodies would never be tolerated!
Vagrant (2020)
Black Lives Don't Matter
I thought it was interesting that authorities were unconcerned that Frank slept outside and drank alcohol everyday, nor were they concerned one bit about his diet.
Enter Cooper, a dog, and they get a complaint that Frank is feeding him garbage, so he has to change his life or risk losing Cooper. Talk about kicking a man when he is already down, and at least he was feeding Cooper!
Frank cleans up his act because he does not want to lose Cooper, so he gets a job. Without notice one night, the supervisor tells Frank he has to stay until 2 am to clean up after a party. Frank tells him he cannot work that late because of the place he is staying, the supervisor is unconcerned. As a result of him not getting back to the shelter by 10 pm, Frank has to sleep outside that night.
That same night a white thug attacks Frank, and lies about what happened to punish Frank and Cooper. Surprise, surprise, a white guy lying on a Black person to spite him for something he brought on himself!
Why did it not come out that the only reason Cooper attacked the white thug was because he robbed and beat up his person?
Lies told by white people often cost Black people their freedom or their lives. In this case, the lying white thug cost the life of an innocent dog, and because Frank was so distraught after losing his only companion, he took his own life. So in essence that white thug murdered Frank and Cooper.
I thought it was also interesting that when Frank was panhandling, people ignored him, but when he held the puppy in his arms people gave him DOLLARS, never mind just spare change he was asking for.
Among other things, this film reinforces that the lives of dogs are given more value than the lives of Black people.
Is It Cake? (2022)
Great Idea, Poor Execution
I am not into reality shows, but I kinda like this one. I love how the contestants are able to make the cakes look like real objects. The execution of the show is horrible, and so is the host, I could not even remember why he looked so familiar, but otherwise the idea of the show is great!
As for if the first winner cheated, apparently it was not against the rules.
Yvonne Orji: Momma, I Made It (2020)
Hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yvonne Orji is hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!! She and other Nigerians like Gina Yahshere, Luvvie Ajayi, Godfrey, etc., are captivating and injecting excellence, energy, and culture into the entertainment industry which was so lacking!
It is beyond time for Black comedians, actors, writers, entertainers, etc., to shine! They just needed the gatekeepers to get out of the way!!!! No more bull about no one being interested in their product.
For decades I had to settle for dry, humourless, old white dudes like carson, letterman, leno, and others. Thank goddess they are going extinct!!!
Let the good times and fun times finally roll.
P. S. I am not Nigerian or Nigerian-American and I got it!!!!!!!!!! It was the so-called humour of carson, letterman, leno, etc., that always went right over my head. Finally this is material I can relate to!!!! Keep up the excellent work my people. Wakanda Forever!!!!
Single All the Way (2021)
I enjoyed it
I watched this movie a couple of nights ago, and I rather enjoyed it, especially during a time where there is a lot of uncertainty and negativity surrounding us.
I loved that the gay characters were actually played by gay actors.
It's unacceptable that there were not more racialized actors in the movie. The amount of whiteness was blinding!
My Christmas Inn (2018)
Adorable!
This movie was just what I needed, light, cute, fun, and funny, with a bit of romance thrown in.
The acting was good, and all the actors really seemed to be enjoying themselves, i.e., the chemistry was great. It was refreshing seeing Jackée, Tim Reid and Tia Mowry all working together again. It was like a family reunion. Ha, ha!
It would be lovely if we could live in a town such as the one depicted in the film where people were actually kind and didn't use systemic oppression, prejudice and biases to unnaturally make people's lives a living hell.
Really Love (2020)
Intense
This film was intense and in the end, their love story broke my heart.
There was no way the relationship could work between them, their paths were just too different, as were their love languages and communication styles.
Stevie's mother said it all at the end, he just wasn't ready for her, and though they would always have love for one another, he was only meant to be in her life for a season.
Love Is Blind (2020)
Grow up!
In my opinion, the only sane people of the main group are Lauren and Cameron. Congratulations to them! The rest of 'em need to grow up!!!!!
Barnett is "whipped"! Damn shame! I used to respect Amber, but not after this!
Not a fan of Jessica's, but at least she tried to extend an olive branch.
I was shocked that Mark is not the decent guy he tried to portray himself as, but then again he was not there to defend himself.
Giannina and Damien, just why? It ain't gunna work! Move on!
Diamond did not treat her guest right...in my opinion. But then again, maybe her peeps were right and the night was about her. Maybe her date was a big baby after all!
Carlton has some serious issues with the sistah's! And he always seems to be gunning for a fight. Maybe he is looking for a mommy figure.
What Carlton said at the end about the woman who seemed to date everyone was interesting. Maybe she is desperate!
Also, just like with the original show I fast forwarded most of it, preferring instead to watch Lauren and Cameron's scenes.
Sexy Beasts (2021)
Different
The idea behind this show is interesting. I wonder who came up with it. Reminds me of the following shows: "Love is Blind", "The Bachelor/Bachelorette" and the "Dating Game" all wrapped up into one.
I have seen three episodes, and so far most of the people have been relatively attractive.
I agree with am.by that there should be a follow up on the successful matches...unless there haven't been any.
Resort to Love (2021)
Loved this movie!
I absolutely LOVED this movie!!!!
What can I say, I love Black love!!!!
This movie was fun, entertaining, and took my mind off of my own problems for a while! Win-win-win!!!!
More of movies like this please!
Intouchables (2011)
in a word, "racist".
I saw this film several years ago. From what I can remember the main actors were fine, so this is no criticism to them.
I assume the film was supposed to be fun, and lighthearted, but it only succeeded in reproducing racist, classist, toxically male, and other stereotypes.
^^ I almost gave examples of why I did not like the film, but I remembered I have said it all before, and to quote Toni Morrison:
"The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being."
Alternatino with Arturo Castro (2019)
Needed Comedy
Just caught a couple of episodes on CRAVE. This show is so funny and refreshing!
I love seeing racialized people on tv, and it was WAY overdue!!!!
Thank goddess for CRAVE, NETFLIX, YouTube, etc. Watching tv as a kid, was an exercise in seeing show after show without racialized performers. Sure some shows were good, but many were lame, boring and racist!
Like it or not, the media, and traditional gatekeepers can't lock us out any longer. The quality of shows are top-notch, and the storylines are so much more interesting, and relatable!!!!!
FINALLY tv/media is actually reflecting the diversity of people in the world, and it's about flipping time!!!!
The Kominsky Method (2018)
Very well done
I saw an ad for this show quite awhile back and though it looked funny, but I had no intention in watching it.
Just finished binged watching it and it was a fantastic series indeed, I laughed and cried. With all shows and books that are great, I didn't want it to end, and I feel a little depressed that is has.
I loved the semi reunions with Danny DeVito and Kathleen Turner. When Kathleen Turner's charcter first appeared, though she seemed familiar, I did not recognize her.
The casting was fantasic, there was great chemistry between the actors especially Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.
I am in my mid 50s and life is more palpable now. I learned a lot about aging, sickness, death, dying and living. In our youth, we take so much for granted. For those who are fortunate, life could be filled with joy, but there is also a lot of pain and disappointment.
I would have appreciated more diversity in the cast, but despite the lack of diversity, I was deeply touched by the the series. If the reader has not seen the series yet, I predict you will enjoy it.
The Last Black Man in San Francisco (2019)
I kept waiting
I saw this movie when it came out, and I really wanted to like it because it is so rare to see Black actors on the big screen who are not playing a negative stereotype !
It was a slow film, which is fine, however, it just didn't get any better, and I really didn't understand the point of the film.
The movie had potential and though it got close to making a powerful breakthrough a few times, it just never go there, so I was left feeling disappoined.
Love Jacked (2018)
Some issues, but overall entertaining
There were a lot of issues with the movie, like paying for a fake wedding and fake funeral! Sure, the family owned a business, but I doubt they had that kind of money to waste. It's unfortunate Maya went to such extremes to prove her father wrong.
Yes, there were other issues with the movie, like probably having a low budget, but all in all, I laughed and I forgot about things in my life that were causing me to feel anxious and depressed.
The Upshaws (2021)
Love This!
I LOVE this show!!!!!
I have been in a depression for over a year, and as I am slowly coming out of it this show is causing me to literally laugh out loud, and experience joy!
I love that this show is not preachy with religion and all that BS! Not ALL Black people are religious, thank you very much!!!!
I love that though this couple has had their issues, but they are still loving, strong, together and a team!
Black Love is a Beautiful thing and comes in all shapes and sizes!!!!!
Just in Time (2021)
Loved this movie!
I loved this movie! It warmed my heart which is something I desperately needed during this challenging time.
Was a delight to see an all Afrikan/Black cast in a movie that was all about love and supporting one another.
Though there were some lows and some challenges, at least it was not the major theme of the film and it had a happy ending, which is so rare in movies made in amerika with an all Black cast, as the west loves to focus on stories that are all about Black struggle, suffering, and pain.
Thank goddess for Afrikan movies where we can tell our own stories in culturally appropriate ways.
Lastly, I loved the mostly Afrikan clothing the actors wore. Just beautiful!!!!!
Cold Feet (2020)
Trials and Tribulations
Beautiful film.
Didn't like that the wife blamed the husband for her infidelity. The ex-lover didn't seem to know when to back the effe up! The wife should have blocked his number.
Was surprised the girlfriend still married the guy. Don't know about the husband loving the wife "unconditionally" as she stated when he was about to kill her or the lover.
Glad the husband agreed to go to counselling with his wife, most men would not have, especially when it was the wife who cheated.
In the end, the wife made the right choice in choosing her husband, didn't like how she ended things with the lover though, she mocked him and put him down.
All in all I enjoyed the film. Black on Black love is the way of the future!
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020)
What was true yesterday is still true today!
To me this film was upsetting, thought I loved the strength and confidence of Ma Rainey, and how she refused to let them non-Black individuals push her around. She set the pace and went according to her timeline!
This film demonstrates how and why non-Black people are where they are in society, which has EVERYTHING to do with them being ruthlessness, liars, cunning thieves who appropriate other people's property, talent, and hard work.
I hated how those shysters tried to take advantage of Ma Rainey, and how that shark record company producer stole the music from the Boseman's character to give to the untalented blue-eyed demons. They steal from the originators and creatives to give to their own, then take the credit! What was true yesterday is still true today.
In frustration Boseman's character picks a fight with a bandmate that ends the bandmate's life. That scene is a perfect illustration so-called "Black on Black" crime. Rather, that it's all about proximity! In frustration, some Black people take out on one another what should really be taken out on the demons violating and stealing from them!!!!
