Superwog (2017)
Loved it!
Had me laughing out loud in places - love the outtakes at the end too! It won't be to everyone's taste but if you like The Young Offenders or Stath lets flats, give it a go.
Stranger Things: Chapter Four: Dear Billy (2022)
Just so good
I didn't think each season could live up to the one before but they really have. In my top ten series - brilliantly done but this episode was something else - loved it!
This Is Going to Hurt (2022)
Excellent!
I loved the book so was very hesitant in watching this but I am very glad I did. There are similarities but really this series is doing its own thing. Laugh out loud at times but also dark and heartbreaking. Ben Whishaw is excellent in a challenging role but the stand out for me was Ambika Mod as Shruti - she was understated and excellent. One of the best series I have seen in a while. Highly recommend.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Loved it!
A huge fan of the original, I wasn't sure what to expect but I wasn't disappointed. Good script with some great one liners, well cast and lots of humorous references to the first film. Very glad it wasn't ruined by too many OTT special effects - a lot of heart & soul in this film.
Tag (2018)
Totally stupid - very glad I watched it
I had pretty low expectations and it definitely over uses appendage jokes at times but overall, I really enjoyed this film. It has heart as well as humour and was just good fun. Make sure you watch the credits when the real players clips are shown. Made me want to play!
Back to Life (2019)
Beautifully done
Brilliantly cast with some great dark humour mixed in with some very moving moments. The lead actress portrays a difficult role so well - cleverly understated. Definitely worth a watch..
The Willoughbys (2020)
Dark and quirky - loved it!
This is definitely dark at times so be prepared but it is a great watch and handles a difficult but very real subject well. I loved its quirky humour and also found it heartbreaking in parts. This won't be for everyone but will resonate with kids who don't come from a perfect family. Loved it!
Smallfoot (2018)
Fun and clever
Deserves a higher rating - fun, good acting with real depth. A nice watch for lockdown.
Criminal: Spain: Carmen (2019)
Watch for Carmen's performance
The 10 out of 10 is mainly for the performance of the actress playing Carmen - a tough role but she really delivered. Heartbreaking.
Cobra Kai (2018)
So much better than expected!
If you grew up watching the Karate Kid movies this series will really make you smile. It's cheesy but in a deliberate, tongue in cheek way. Some great lines, funny moments and great clips from the original film. Really worth a watch.
Country Strong (2010)
Much better than expected
I had low expectations of this film - assumed it would be cheesy and a bit 'fluffy' but I was very wrong. Great performances from all the cast - does help if you like country music but even if you don't, it's definitely worth a watch.
Brimstone (2016)
A journey
I was apprehensive about watching this after reading the warnings about how dark it is and they were not wrong in a lot of ways but I'm very glad I watched it anyway. It's dark, moving and a truly memorable film. Great performances and one of the best films with real impact I have seen in a long time.
The Secrets She Keeps (2020)
Worth a watch
Wasn't expecting much after reading some of the negative reviews but am very glad I ignored them and watched it anyway. Good casting, very entertaining and pretty tense at times. Would definitely recommend.
El Camino (2019)
Kind of beautiful
I wasn't sure what to expect from this film and thought it might be OTT and best avoided but I was pleasantly surprised. It's understated and measured and a great watch if you were invested in Jesse and Breaking Bad. I thought it was brilliantly done - subtle, tense and well acted. Would definitely recommend.
Unforgettable (2017)
Everyone's a critic
To give this film only 1 or 2 stars is overly critical and not a fair rating. It's not an Oscar winner but it's entertaining and the two leading ladies give good performances. Worth a watch.
Destroyer (2018)
One to watch
One of the best films I've seen in a while. Great cast. The pace is slow but it's brilliantly done. If you need constant action, this is not for you but if you like films with some depth & substance, I highly recommend.
Dead to Me (2019)
Something different
I binged watched this - felt it was different to a lot of series I've seen. Quirky, great characters, dark, funny and surprising in parts. Very glad I watched this.
The Shallows (2016)
Entertaining
Does not deserve the 1 or 2 star reviews on here. It's not Oscar winning admittedly but it's stunningly shot and entertaining. I am not a fan of cgi so some of the shots were too unrealistic for me but all in all, it's an ok watch.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
Just no
The first film was great, dark and edgy just as it should be for such a serious topic. Why introduce a teenage brat in the second one? It just does not work. Totally lost it's edge as a result - v v disappointed. Such a waste.
Den skyldige (2018)
A must see
Builds great tension - I thought I knew what was happening but I was wrong. A great watch!
After Life (2019)
Funny and heartbreaking
I wasn't sure about watching this but I'm very glad I did. It's not perfect but it's also genius in its way and quite brave. It made me chuckle and it made me well up too. Something a bit different, great cast and heartwarming and heartbreaking in equal measure.
Close (2019)
Ignore the bad reviews
Worth watching, particularly for Noomi who is beyond hardcore. Her role is based on a real female bodyguard which adds to the interest and background. It's by no means perfect but I cannot understand the low ratings. If you're not intimidated by strong women, then you won't be bored.
You Were Never Really Here (2017)
Phoenix is excellent
This is a slow paced, atmospheric, dark film with excellent performances from the cast. Anyone who gave this a really low rating and called it 'boring' has clearly missed the point entirely and this film was sadly wasted on you. If you have some depth, attention span and looking for something a bit different, I'd recommend.
The Revenant (2015)
Ultimate fight for survival and revenge
Beautiful film, slow paced but gripping in its way. Very glad I watched it until the final look to the camera. Totally broke the spell for me.
Informer (2018)
Almost great
Just binged watched this - truly amazing performances and gripping storyline but I don't buy the ending. Just not convinced that his brother would shoot people in a cafe - the female policewoman maybe but even then it's a stretch to believe it. A shame as overall this was a great drama and the actor playing Razza was superb.
