Renai Batoru Rowaiyaru (2024)
The Audacity of this Show
Chastity High is a mind-boggling disaster. I watched the entire series hoping for a reality check, but it never came - even in the final 15 minutes of the last episode I still held out for one, alas... This show promotes teenage pregnancy and devalues the education system, which is scary. It's set in Japan, a first-world country that apparently has run out of real problems to tackle.
The premise is flawed: why must high school students fight for their right to sexual/intimate relationships? Can't they wait until they finish high school, go to university, and then have the freedom to make their own choices? Isn't that the idea - to delay intimacy until they're older and more mature? These are 14-17yrs olds. I shudder.
The rule wasn't about banning love, but about delaying its physical expression. Yet, the show insists on pushing this unhealthy narrative. The main character's audacity is staggering, especially after extorting and shaming others due to her own daddy issues. It's a classic case of immature writers making decisions about life without experiencing it themselves. Overall, Chastity High is a cringeworthy and misguided attempt at exploring complex issues.
The Sandman (2022)
Good at most, Boring at Best
The pilot held my interest, and made me want to watch more, but the disappointment started in the second episode. I took me days to get through each episodes. I found the show boring; long winded, unnecessary and dull. The dialogue was mostly amateurish, felt like I was watching a children's show. (At different points in the show, I felt like I was watching an episode of Netflix's "The Worst Witch.") Yes, it went downhill like that.
I liked the Death episode best, it felt grown up. The dialogue was good. Then they introduced Rose and her brother, and I was thrown back into watching a show for kids. All in all, the show had its good moments, which could have been summed up in a 90 minutes movie, the rest was just purely unnecessary.
*Oh, and I almost threw the whole show away watching the episode were Constantine gaslighted Morpheus while trying to save her friend, phew.
Breaded Life (2021)
Exploring the Nigerian Multiverse. But What was that Yoruba??
This movie was really good, and not just compared to Nigerian standard, it can hold its weight internationally. For me, I use it from the lens of the multiverse. The protagonist's consciousness was thrown into an alternate reality after having a NDE, were he lived as himself in this other reality, that was similar and also different from his current one. It was so much this movie made me want to explore; like how the other alternate Sumni fared after the main Sumni awoke out of that reality.
All in, I liked this movie a lot; I thought they did a wonderful job in the acting and storytelling. But I just, for the life of me, I couldn't get past the bread sellers Yoruba. Lol. What was that accent? It grained on my nerves so much so that, It reduced my enjoyment of the movie a notch, which, again, was good stuff. Why didn't they just allow her speak normal Yoruba! It sounded so off and unnatural to me. However, she acted her part excellently.
The main protagonist, Sunmi, performed his role well too. The movie dialogue was meaningful and realistic (almost a first for a Nigerian movie) and worth following. All in all, wonderful movie with a wonderful ending. But I give a 8 because I just couldn't get past the one Yoruba accent. Lol.
Bridgerton (2020)
The Fashion
Just seen season 2; the fashion is so boring, the dresses are all the same, just different fabrics. For a period drama, I prefer the mens clothing, it's seems to be more interesting than the women.
New Amsterdam (2018)
Saviour complex
I watched episodes 1 - 7 of season one, then I skipped all the other sap and watched the last episode; I also watched episode 1-4 of season two, and I tell you, I can confidently say this series is one big toilet. Some entitled control freak white dude with the typical saviour complex, running around and waving his privilege wand that gets him whatever he wants with no consequences. The whole plot was just one big politically correct joke.
And oh, there's that episode (s02 e04) where the other white saviour doctor (the psychiatrist) was literally shopping for children online... because privilege. Okkkkk.
Honey: Rise Up and Dance (2018)
What in the toilet is this?
This was just sad to watch. The dancing, the acting, the story line, the editing, it was all one big toilet. I loved the clothes though, should have been a fashion movie instead of dance.
First off, their dancing was so off key; the dance hardly ever synced with the music. It's almost like they danced to a different song during filming, and different songs in the movie were added during editing.
Also, the other dance crews danced way better than the protagonist and antagonist crew. Eva, the girl from the rival team, couldn't dance for toilet. The last battle was such a let down. The girl in the black extra team danced way better than anyone of the other girls had in the whole movie.
And then, for the final battle, was that all Teyana (I love ms. Taylor) could offer us? Like Teyana is a way better dancer and stepper than that last scene.
So much toilet in this movie. Then the scene of Teyana getting upset when she didn't get the solo and the coach going to beg her later? Like whaaat? You were lucky to be on that team and all of a sudden you a diva? Heck no.
Story line was toilet.
I rated this a 2 because I got to see Teyana and Bryshe.
Don't watch.
Unfreedom (2014)
Patchwork
The director probably thinks this movie is some form of art, probably considers hisself some artistic champ. How sad. The total frame of this movie was terrible. A patchwork of unfinished, unnecessary and overachieving mess.
I found it very annoying.
Wonder Woman (2017)
I'm still Wonder-ing
Wonder how this movie won any awards!! The acting was bad, Carrot (what's her name) was a terrible actress in this movie. I couldn't tell if she was faking the accent or if she naturally sounded that bad. The plot was weak also.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
Awful Acting
What can I say, the whole acting was just bad, really bad. The only enjoyable was the last 3 minutes of the movie. Plot was dumb, action scenes; you get less action scenes in Mortal Kombats Story more than in thi movie.
The Revenant (2015)
All because it's Di' Caprio
I found this movie too long and gross. Don't get me wrong, I love gory and violent movies (I'm a Tarantino lover so... ) but I found The Revenant irritating. The gore in this movie was just plain annoying and over played, especially when he was being mauled by the bear. Jeez. I found this movie a tad boring, almost turned off after the first 30mins. I only finished watching it (and gave it a 7/10) because of my loyalty to Di' Caprio (He's Legendary). The story line was so cliché. Man who has lost everything goes to seek vengeance, defying all odds cause he has nothing to lose, then he finally meets his nemesis and they have the last fight where he obviously wins after much struggle. Tch.
I felt the director was trying too hard to be heartless, killing off some particular characters. On the bright side, great cinematography and Leonardo. ❤️what How has he never won an Oscar? That's just cruel. Tom Hardy was another wonder, legendary performance I must say.
