Ordinary Angels (2024)
Not Very Interesting
My wife and I went to see this - admittedly, she was looking forward to this a lot more than I was - but I was curious about it based upon the previews. It just didn't grab me. It seemed like they condensed and rushed the storyline and as a result, it was just a poor production. Also, because it was rushed, I couldn't invest myself in any of the characters. I had no ability to care about any of them. If they had let the story take the path it should have, it probably would've been a lot more interesting. I have a hunch that there was a lot more to this story than what was displayed on the screen. It was a shame.
After Death (2023)
Very DRY!
The way they promoted this film, yes, they said it was somewhat documentary, but it's pretty much ALL documentary. Dry, facts and figures, narration, etc., but that's it.
We walked out after 40 minutes of this because we just couldn't take any more. After you get past the initial research presented, it's just way too repetitive. A snooze-fest.
What they should have presented in their commercials was "If you like lectures and seminars, this movie is for YOU!"
That's the problem with most movie promos these days.....they show you some humorous banter between a couple of the characters and lead you to think it's a comedy and it turns out that's the only snappy patter in the movie. This one never claimed to be a comedy, but they made it seem like there were going to be more re-creations and intriguing scenes and there's practically none of that.
If you want entertainment, you'd be better off having a cinder block dropped on your head.
A Man Called Otto (2022)
Far From One of Hanks' Best
Normally, a Tom Hanks film is pretty much an instant hit with me; this one, not so much. It struck me as part rip-off of Clint Eastwood's "Gran Torino," part rip-off of "A Christmas Carol."
Perhaps I soured on this one because the promotional advertisements showed mostly the quick-witted scenes, making it appear to be a comedy - which is what I went into the theater expecting. It has some comedic moments, but no real "laugh out loud" portions. It's most definitely a drama.
The acting was good, the storyline eh, not really all that good. One of the characteristics of a good movie is that the viewer gets an attachment to and cares for the characters. I didn't really care for any of them.
I'll give it a generous 5 out of 10. If you have nothing better to do, by all means, go see it. Otherwise, steer clear of it for now and catch it when it comes on one of your streaming services.
Saturday Night Live: Regina King/Nathaniel Rateliff (2021)
Make a Joke About Whites or Trump for a Cheap Laugh
It was a full-on white-hating episode, that's for darn sure.
If the same amount of "humor" was directed at the black community, they would be going berserk and shouting that SNL should be ashamed of themselves. Whites have become a convenient target for cheap, mean-spirited humor these days.
Good Boys (2019)
Great Fun - A Lot of Laughs!
I've read a fair amount of the previous "User Reviews" here and it just seems like there's an awful lot of over-analysis of this film.
We went to see it this past weekend and found it absolutely hysterical! Just put your brain in neutral, sit back, and enjoy the movie. You know ahead of time that you're going to an "R" rated comedy, so what should you expect? "R" rated comedy! It's not a social commentary. It's not a political thriller.
These negative reviews seem to reinforce what Jerry Seinfeld said a few years ago about why he won't perform on college campuses anymore, "I hear that all the time," Seinfeld said. "I don't play colleges, but I hear a lot of people tell me, 'Don't go near colleges. They're so PC.'"
Seinfeld says teens and college-aged kids don't understand what it means to throw around certain politically-correct terms.
So, just go to enjoy it - Don't go looking for a reason to be offended and you'll have a good time. (I gave this 8 out of 10 stars because it's very good, not great, but very good.)
Don't Over-Analyze This Movie, Just Enjoy It!
They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
I Love History, However...............
Another "User Reviewer," "janoleolsen," pretty much summed up my impression of the film. The colorization is terrific, the story - especially as told by the participants of The Great War - is fascinating, but the film as a whole becomes monotonous.
It's way longer than it needs to be, some of the narration has voices talking over each other.....the novelty wears off quickly. (And this coming from someone who's ancestor was in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.)
I would never say that the film is lousy or "Don't go to see it." By all means, especially if you're unfamiliar with World War I, it's something you should make a point to go and see. But, if you're a student of history or regular researcher of history, like me, you won't find any eye-openers.
Killing Eve (2018)
Not My Sort of Thing
The actors and actresses are good, I get the dark humor and everything, it just didn't appeal to me. The violence is graphic and watching people beg for their lives really turns me off.
I gave it a "3" because of the talent in the show and script (I mean that in a good way). Anything higher might have indicated that I approve of the show as a whole.
I'm sure there's a niche audience for this show somewhere, among some demographic, but I'm not a part of it.
Bellevue (2017)
Here's the REAL surprise about this series
Probably the funniest part of the entire promotion by WGN, which is planning to air this in early 2018, is that the series has been CANCELLED. They really should be ashamed of themselves at WGN, because they're deliberately baiting people to get invested in this series knowing full well that the Canadian company that produced this ceased operations. So, people will get their 8 episodes (or however many limited number episodes there are) and that'll be it.
Office Christmas Party (2016)
Hollywood Continues its Recent Pattern of Bad Comedies
The studios have been in a recent pattern of putting out some really disappointing "comedies," "Hail, Caesar" and "Masterminds" spring to mind first, and you can add "Office Christmas Party" to the list.
Potentially a great cast, an "R" rating which means they don't have to restrain the writing, and..............DUD. Especially with an "R" rating, I fully expect to have more than a few burst-out-laughing moments, that's not the case with this one.
A Human Resources person who runs around spouting company policies? Yeah, surprise....we never saw anything like that before. Really, ummm, funny. The odd thing was, when there was something that was genuinely funny, the audience we were with seemed afraid to laugh. When one character curses out a child at the airport, instead of laughing (because it's supposed to be a COMEDY, folks!), they were horrified. Oh well.
There's a few chuckles but mostly low-key humor dominating this film and that's all I got out of it. You'd be better off waiting for it to come to cable.
