Gossip Girl (2007)
A Good Teenage Drama
One of my major pet peeves is when people don't give something a chance because of their first impressions. The Gossip Girl series is very popular among teenagers so it was bound to be turned into a movie or show. Personally I think that choosing to make it a show was a great idea.
People need to understand that adaptations to screen will NEVER be the same as books. Many people immediately hate book adaptations because they leave things out. Those people are just kidding themselves...Of course they are going to be different! Books work in books, but not so much on the screen.
I feel like the key to enjoying adaptations is watching it with an open mind KNOWING that it won't be the same thing. Which is what I did for Gossip Girl.
The show is perfectly cast and it is not more than what it is advertised to be: A Teenage Drama. It is a good show under its genre and in my opinion it's even more entertaining than the books. They have changed a few of the plots around a bit and I've got to say, to me it makes a lot more sense. I can't complain much about that actors because they are all fairly unknown and yet pretty good at keeping their "rich, snobby" stereotype characters much deeper and three dimensional than we would expect.
Overall, I think it is a good new show. It is exactly what it says to be, but turns out to be pretty interesting and with some surprising acting.
My advice: give it a chance before judging it by a few scenes, or by the differences to the books. It's not worth it to compare. Take the show for what it is, and then you will be able to enjoy it.
Rebelde Way (2002)
Awesome Show...
I am a Cris Morena fan since I can remember... When I was a kid I loved her TV series "Chiquititas" and followed it for its 7 years on the year, everyday at 6:00. It became a part of my childhood.. which is why, when I was a teenager and Rebelde Way came on, I did not hesitate to watch it.
Whatever criticism there might be on this show I cannot understand them. This is a great show in many aspects. The four main characters do a surprisingly good job as actors... they get better in each episodes and are incredibly funny. Everyone else in the cast does and awesome job, the young actors and the "older" ones.
The story is so original... Cris Morena is also well known for the songs she writes so including a band in the TV Show was an incredibly good idea. It is not surprising that with the ideas Cris Morena has her shows cannot help but be incredibly popular.
In my opinion though, (and I have watched all of her shows, to this day) Rebelde Way was her best one by far... It is about an elite class boarding school and it revolves around the lives of four main characters: Marizza (the rebel and outgoing daughter of a celebrity), Mia (the spoiled but good-hearted daughter of a fashion business man), Pablo (the popular but confused son of the governor) and Manuel (the Mexican tough guy only in Argentina out of revenge).
Throughout the show there are many important issues that are dealt with. Descrimination (to lower class), corruption, and most of all rebelling against injustices... It is all out being a rebel when it is necessary and this show does an awesome job in showing us how by also making us laugh, cry, and stay tuned for each episode that comes.
I think the show is one of the best ideas I have ever seen, great acting, and above all it knows perfectly well its audience and who it is targeted at. This, in my opinion, is incredibly important in a show.
I think everyone in their pre-teens and teens will be able to enjoy this show a lot...and it also has some very good music (which at first I wasn't sure about, but surprisingly it ends up being not bad)
I think the only thing left to say is that the show had a lot of well deserved success in many different countries. And for anyone who watched the show, they will understand why.
Alma pirata (2006)
Surprisingly good and interesting...
When I first heard about this TV show I wasn't so sure about it... It was the new production by Cris Morena.. a very popular producer of children shows... Usually her shows are cute and they target their respective audiences perfectly, which is why her shows are so popular. When I was a kid I loved the show she was producing at the time, when I was in my pre-teen years or early teen years I loved the shows she targeted at my audience.
Alma Pirata was being targeted at a completely different audience, which was basically, at that point, my age. So it's safe to say that I grew up watching her shows...
The reason why I wasn't so sure if I was going to like this particular one was because it was completely different to anything Cris Morena had ever produced. It was a show about pirates, a treasure, suspense... It all seemed kind of weird at first. I knew that the acting would be good because the actors and actresses are among the most popular in Argentina and have had good careers in the business.
I started watching the show and started liking it more as the episodes went by. I enjoy the way that this unusual story is told... It is a story about three guys who have lost their fathers. When they are grown up, after being apart for so long, they are brought back together by a woman who used to be great friends with their fathers. She tells them that they are the heirs of their father's: "Liga" which was the group their fathers had created to make justice whenever there was an injustice. But there is something much bigger behind the "Liga"...they are also behind a treasure called "Alma" ... nobody knows exactly what it is, except for Gino Riganti, the "bad guy" who was the one who murdered their dads. He also wants Alma desperately.
It is pretty a pretty weird and unusual storyline, which doesn't sound very realistic (that is what I thought at first). But when you start watching it you realize that it is also about friendship, love and everything that we all love a TV series to have.
It is not easy to tell an adventure story everyday, but they did a very good job of it. The show will keep you tuned until the end to find out what Alma is...
I thought it was a different show told in a great way, and after having watched so many of the same series on TV, this was very refreshing!
Diarios de motocicleta (2004)
Pretty Good
I am not particularly a fan of Che Guevara, I respect his beliefs but I have my own. This movie is entertaining because it is the first time that this part of Che Guevara's life is shown. We had always heard about a trip he made, which marked the beginning of his beliefs, but we never really heard much about it. This movie does a good job at portraying his relationship with his friend, and how his views of the world changed as he traveled further north of America. I only have a few complaints, and those are that even though Gael Garcia does a good job I wish they would have casted someone who was actually from Argentina and didn't have to fake the accent. There is also a very strong biased in the movie. These reasons are why i gave the movie an 8 out of 10. But it is very entertaining and you get to see beautiful landscapes and learn about Che Guevera's life, therefore I suggest everyone to watch it.
Salaam Namaste (2005)
Great movie!
I was so surprised by this movie! The only reason why I watched it was because my french teacher was making me watch it. I agreed after a while but I wasn't looking forward to it. I was so surprised at how good this movie was! I didn't want it to finish! It tells the story of a girl and a guy who, when they first talk don't like each other at all, but with time they fall in love and move in together. It is set in Australia and the characters are Indian. The movie, not only has a great story line, but it also shows us a lot about the Indian culture. It has a few songs in it, which are always fun. The movie has it all - i know that's cheesy - but it does! It is a great movie to have fun but it also has some really sad parts when you'll want to grab the tissues. It is amazing how many great movies there are out there but we don't realize it just because they aren't Hollywood. This kind of movie is great to have fun, and it also teaches us a lot about another country's culture. I recommend everyone to watch it, nobody will regret it... the acting is also pretty good, it is harder to tell when you don't understand the language, but it seemed decent. There are very funny lines, and of course the occasional sad part. A great movie that everyone should be able to enjoy!
The Amazing Race (2001)
Good..
Even though it is still going on I am enjoying this season of The Amazing Race... So far my favorite season was number 5. The reason for this is that they really went all over the world, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt, Dubai... The family edition is a really good idea, since most of the people that watch the show are families. The only thing that I think they should start doing is to SEND THEM AROUND THE WORLD!! so far it has been only inside the united states, the purpose of the show is for the teams to race around the world. It makes it more interesting! So even though I am enjoying the season I just wish that they would hurry up and go somewhere else other than the States... Really good show though, probably one of the best reality shows ever.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005)
Really Good Movie
First of all let me start by saying it is extremely well casted. The four girls do a great job and when I read the books I imagined them pretty much like that. Alexis Bledel who plays "Lena" is the pretty but shy one. Amber Tymberlin "Tibby" the rebel one. America Ferrera "Carmen" the one with a strong personality and Blake Lively "Bridget" the athletic, outgoing one. It is the story of four best friends who are going their different ways during the summer of the sophomore year. To keep them together they have a pair of pants which, despite of their different figures, fits them all well. So they decide they are going to send each other the pants in hope that it will bring them a part of each other while they are separated. During the summer they all learn things about love, friendship, being different, death. But despite everything they go through they know they will always have each other. I love this movie because it is not your typical teenage movie where at the end everyone learns a lesson and lives happily ever after. In this movie they all do learn a lesson but they don't have a happily ever after. They are still growing and therefore still learning things about love, friendship, being different, death... It is a really good movie that many people are definitely going to be able to relate to. Nobody should miss it!
28 Days (2000)
Impressive
In this outstanding drama Sandra Bullock's character is a party girl who drinks a lot. She drinks during the morning, afternoon, at night... In short she has a drinking problem. The movie starts when she kind of ruins her sister's wedding and gets busted by the cops who "sentence" her to 98 days in rehab. During the story we see Sandra Bullock's character learn more about the other people who also have problems and even at the end get close to them, she tries to escape a bunch of times until she learns that rehab might actually be for the best. During these 98 days in rehab she undergoes many changes, getting to know her family more and what they think of her problem. This movie deals with problems that alcoholics go through and the movie does a very good job at portraying them to the audience. I rented this movie because there was nothing left at blockbuster, and I'm glad I did. My compliments to Sandra Bullock who pulls of her character really well. If you haven't watched this movie i highly recommend it. It teaches a few lessons, and it is very well done.
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
Not Bad, but nothing to do with the books...
The thing that disappointed me about this movie was the title. I have read most of the Princess Diaries books and I really like them. So the fact that the movie is called the same thing is annoying since it has absolutely nothing to do with the books. If you have read the books and want to see the movie just go in knowing that there is no relation between the two whatsoever. They are two completely different things. Once you know and accept this, you can enjoy the movie. It is pretty nice, with good acting. There is also a scene where we listen to Julie Andrews singing again! It is definitely a cute movie to watch and enjoy with the family!
First Daughter (2004)
Good but not original
Don't get me wrong, it is an OK movie. Not the best but not the worst either... But is it me or is this movie practically the same as *Chasing Liberty* starring Mandy Moore???? It is basically the same plot - daughter of the president of the united states leaves home seeking for some freedom, falls in love with an undercover secret agent and gets her heart broken - They actually both came out around the same time so it's hard to say if one copies the other or what happened here. But they are definitely oddly similar... Both movies are OK, acting is OK too by both Katie Holmes and Mandy Moore. The ending kind of disappointed me in both though. I am not going to spoil it but it did. I liked the ending of First Dauther a little bit better i guess but overall they were just practically the same movie...
Now and Then (1995)
Really Cute Nice Movie
This is a really nice movie. The actresses are really well chosen and, especially the young girls do such a great job. It is a coming of age story or four friends who in a summer that started their "becoming a woman" period, they swore they would be there for each other forever. So years later they are all coming back together when one of them is pregnant and really needs their support. Together they relieve this summer that changed their lives and are again brought together by it. It is a really strong friendship they share and it is a really cute plot. For people who like drama this is a must see.You can definitely identify with either one of the characters who are all very different. They all got through many different tough times: parents divorcing, starting to like the boys you always fight with, being "fat"... This summer who shaped who they became is now what brings them close again after some years apart. Well thought out film, highly recommend it!
Land of the Dead (2005)
Just Plain Wrong
I love movies. I don't care what genre really, anything is fine... horror, comedy, action anything bring it on. But this movie was a waste of time and money. First of all it is classified as *horror*. When i went to this movie that is not particularly an emotion I felt while watching. What would best describe what i felt would be - grossed out - This movie is about a world populated by zombies. Everyone who is not a zombie lives inside this huge building own by the richest most powerful person. It is basically about this group of people who try to get supplies from the places populated by zombies. But in the movie the zombies apparently want to take over and kill the people. It is really not scary at all but extremely disturbing. If you like to watch how zombies eat other people's eyeballs, fingers and about any other part you can think of, this is probably the movie for you. I will not spoil the ending but let me just say it is completely weird and does not make sense at all. So let's just say from the minute the movie starts until the end it totally gross and completely boring.
The actors don't do a bad job, that's not it. But just the plot of the movie and just everything about the movie is just pointless.
Casados con hijos (2005)
Not so bad
When i watched the show for the first time and realized that it was the argentinean version of Married with children I didn't have much hope for the show. I never really liked Married with Children because I never completely understood the humor in it. But as Casados con Hijos progressed i learned to really appreciate. Since it is argentinean it was adapted to our culture it is easier to understand the humor. The actors are very well chosen, all of them well known in Argentina. The only one two I had doubts about were Luisana Lopilato and Dario Lopilato who play the two kids. But surprisingly they were able to pull it off pretty well, giving something extra to the show. So although this show doesn't seem like a good one it is bound to surprise more than one person.
Son amores (2002)
One of the best shows of all time!
This show is surprisingly good. It may not look like it at the beginning but it's extremely funny, well written, cute and just about everything else. The second season wasn't so good and lost rating but the first season was definitely unforgettable. The script is very smart and the actors do such a great job. Except for Miguel Angel Rodriguez (who plays the main character)all the rest weren't very well known in Argentina before the show. The plot of the show is about three siblings the *Marquesi* (Mariano Martinez, Nicolas Cabre, Florencia Bertotti) who live in the city of Buenos Aires with their uncle(Miguel Angel Rodriguez). They do not come from a very high class so they do not have the best manners. The two boys (Martin and Pablo)are professional soccer players and play for an Argentinean club while their uncle (Sanchez) is a referee and the sister (Valeria)works at a candy store. So neither of them make a lot of money. The show is about their romances, struggles, that they go through. The show takes many interesting turns like when one of the brothers, Martin Marquesi, becomes a very cheesy singer. The script written by Adrian Suar, is very funny and many porteños (people from Buenos Aires) were able to identify with this family and their friends.
