Farmi Suomi (2020)
Original idea is nice
Based on a Swedish format, one is able to follow farm life by amateurs and celebrities. Very nice idea, introducing traditional methods in farming and so on.
More than interesting is how well modern people are familiar with methods used some maybe 200 years ago go produce alimentation.
However - not having seen the original Swedish version - this Finnish one seems to be a prolonged footwear commercial, especially for the national Wellingtons brand. The camerawork is well chosen, that these Wellies are well presented. That said, all in all this pretty much looks like a well-prolonged footwear commercial rather than nice true television program.
Rehtori (2019)
No acting can save a bad script
What a waste of directing and acting talent. If the script itself had gone so wrong, it should never have ended up being broadcast on television or any other medium.
It does not help when the acting is more suitable for a stage than for the camera. And for that matter, the camera work looks like it is filmed by some mobile phone.
Through the setup of some kind of story, it is difficult to see that one wants to see the payoff.
A good question is, why was this ever ordered, written and produced - and - eventually broadcast.
And the audience? This is not for teenagers nor parents of them. Perhaps for teachers.
The Gentlemen (2019)
Well done all in all
I would like to give 10, but I never do that. That said, nine is the best I can offer.
This is clever. Many applauses, but for a good reason.
The script and the screen writing are excremely clever.
There is not a thing I would like remove from it. Acting supports it all. And that said, directing and et all does the job.
The subject, naturally, is a bit more complicated but this is the world we are living in.
There are no opinions with political conflict or any such.
Funny saying that, is this a comedy or drama. This could be both. Perfectly written and produced.
Something like this, please.
Täältä tullaan, elämä! (1980)
Nearly perfect of an era and a place
A classic showing the atmosphere of a troubled suburb of Eastern Helsinki in the 80s. The main character is well built and played more than well. In fact, all the characters are done the same way, too. The directing and camera work reflect the era. Setups and casting all fit together. Especially important is that this film has captured quite some parts of Helsinki that have gone quite some time ago. A perfect example to film in places knowing that they no longer exists soon. This film has captured so many locations and the spirit of that time. The story plus the plot is excellent. A troubled kid, or to say kids, do have emotions. This displays it well.
The Dudesons Movie (2006)
A praise of complete stupidity
This is not a documentary. It is neither a mocumentary. It is a collection of some sort of sketches made by adults who think they live forever - for children who should not watch this kind of rubbish. Naturally, there is no story, plot or point as to why this was made and for whom. Anything goes. Unfortunately, the main audience must be some teenagers. The camerawork is somewhat "Hey, I have a video camera!". There is no directing, just a few chaps inventing and showing things to hurt themselves. Special effects are introduced, too, in the form of showing a couple of seconds every now and then of a scene in black and white.
Daniel Ahola: Poliisia ja rosvoa (2023)
Painfull to watch
I watched the first episode solely out of interest. This is absolutely horrible. It looks like some toddler wrote it to be watched by other toddlers. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Nothing can save this - not the directing, acting, or camerawork. When the idea itself is so childish and awful, it could work as animation in some degree for children who, yet, cannot speak and everything they see on screen is true. It is a shame that screen time is wasted on this kind of rubbish that could probably work better as a board game, hoping if even that would help it . Grow up; this is not funny for anyone over two years old.
Jadesoturi (2006)
Spoiled oportunity
I have read the original script of this film. That was clever, professionally written and something I wanted to see realised on screen. The end result is an unbelievable mess. All the action just tries to hide the fact that the plot is so incredibly obscene where the original story was absolutely brilliant. Basic example of a newcomer director who thinks he can create a new way of storytelling straight out of school, while it might be a better idea first trying traditional way and then, only then, try breaking the rules. Arrogantly horrible and expensive for a student work breaking the basic rules and making the technical professionals' work spoiled completely.
MC Helper beKINGs (2022)
Painful to watch
This is some what embarrassing. Apparantly written by adults, but no story with only some sort of a plot.
This would be agreeable if, say, the makers were 13-15 years old. They are not.
A good question would be why two good actors were hired to play a small role in this teen joke.
It is more than difficult to find a premise nor story. For who this was made for?
Plain rubbish and waste of time. Sure, if there was a some what professional screen writer it should be much watcheable.
Adults trying to be teen agers again in countryside. Extremely superly bad idea.
Seek help in drama writing. And comedy is the most cruel of them.
Pientä laittoa (2019)
Well acted main characters
The story itself works fine, the plot not that well. Defaming by naming a suburb is a silly idea when one could use an invented name. The main actors fit perfectly for the camera, performing brilliantly, when most of the other actors might be better on stage. There are so many stereotypes that could be used instead of abused. The basics of script writing, that is to say, use them but do not enhance them. The directing works fine based on the script that has been available. The ending is rich and well intended. The main character is more than well build and acted, unusual aspect. Due to the use of stereotypes, lesser points that it should deserve.
Poliisin poika (1998)
Production that went wrong
When the idea for a story is emphasising stereotypes, not using them for good, and there are three screenwriters - possibilities for sad result is obvious. This is what was shown here.
Good acting in a mess does not make it any better.
Two smiles during 80 minutes. I do not call it a comedy.
The idea, the plot and the actors are fine; everything else is way below anything else.
It is sad to see how much good talent was wasted for nothing that does not stand time nor eyes.
If one likes to see Lappish people drinking alcohol and doing stupid things, go ahead. If not, skip this flick unless you want to learn what not do when telling a story.
Siivoton juttu (1997)
Rubbish that cannot be cleaned
The story itself is a good idea, but the plot and the screen writing spoils it all. Nothing wrong with acting, but the actors only try to save a script that cannot be saved.
As an example, why there are so many news reporters with video cameras in such places where they should not be and at such time.
Much time is spent on non-relevant issues. That is to say that it is a joke prolonged to a film.
A fine example where a good idea in one's head, goes bad in the first version on a paper and gets worse and worse in the development process.
On the other hand, a good example to study, where things went all that wrong.
Se mieletön remppa (2020)
Number of writers says it all
Could not watch more than 20 minutes. Silly stereotypes where one stand-up comedian is trying to be funny in several roles, failing in every one of them.
Not much of a story and, that said, any attempts to have a plot on that does not make it any better.
It is difficult to see who this was targeted for. Humor tends to be for teens, the subject of the story - who knows for whom. Embarrasing effort all in all.
That said. A good example, how not to try to tell a story on film, nor on stage.
I could not agree more with the other reviewers on this film. Plain waste of time and money from the production to the audience.
Onks Viljoo näkyny? (1988)
Not suitable basically for anyone
This is not a film in any sense.
Without a plot nor a story, just some random - occationally racists - stereotyped characters running around for no reason one can think of.
I only saw this the other day, just out of curiosity. It was quite difficult to watch it through.
It is based on a Finnish series of 80s scetch characters that were awful to watch then and much, much worse today.
Apart from the lack of a script, interest in camerawork or sound, the acting makes it even worse as it does not take place - just making faces that is supposed to do that.
The motivation making of this kind a film-like certainly was purely money. Any other explanation should make one uncomfortable.
Næturvaktin (2007)
More like this, thank you
It should be difficult to believe that, from such a small country by population like Iceland, produces this master piece. This shows perfectly well that it does not need a huge crew and writers when one team can be called more than talented. Simply clever from the start.
The characters are built so well that you either want to see them or not at all. The setting is absolutely amasing - nothing much but yet, everything.
One simply recognise these people involved, be them main characters or punters that you can only hope this will never see an American version. Do not touch this Hollywood, this is not for you - please let people look like people and feel like one.
Luottomies (2016)
Stereotypes misused
This is a good comedy example of a Finnish production for television in which it sadly breaks the basic rules of drama using stereotypes: use it, do not misuse or confirm it.
The same happens in many other Nordic equivalents when it comes to humor, where the storytelling is for children but content for adults. Somewhat sad, especially as these are popular in style. And often present good actors.
I can understand that a 10 minute period cannot offer as much cleverness than in, say Icelandic "The night shift", but the characters could at least grow a bit by season and that does not happen.
Ihmisten puolue (2008)
This witty political satire stands time
Though making mockery of Finnish then 2008-2010 current political environment, this is still painfully enjoyable satire to watch and listen by everyone in democratic countries.
One room, five people sharing their strong political opinions as a miniature - not in power - political party, upon past week's political events.
This is not "The thick of it". These common people can change their minds during their weekly meeting in a swift in order to make an official common opinion. After usually absurd, but, unfortunately believable row.
Velipuolikuu (1983)
Cannot repeat until funny
This started Finnish TV-comedy style that was based on "wear a wig and repeat until funny" that, say, The fast show later used successfully, if one is into it.
This was not funny when released and it is less funny today. The sketches are strange and they do not translate whether subtitled nor many of them being non-verbal. However, super popular in Finland then and now for some odd reason.
The only way to recognise this being a sketch comedy is by its format.
If bending another actor standing into a 90 angle in a studio space and then giving him a kick in his bum - without a reason nor dialog - is considered being funny and that being the punch, then this must be funny.
On the other hand, this was the least embarassing efforts the creators did before later attemps to amuse the audience and for way too many years.
