The Penguin (2024)
Amazing acting, great atmosphere, but keep missing the mark
Yes, this has some of the best acting ever seen. And yes, the Gotham feel, the atmosphere of this world, is dark, gritty and feels real. And yes, we get good directing and pretty good storytelling. So, I get it, I get why so many love this show. Personally though I'm more "meh" about it.
Sure, compared to almost any other contemporary TV show this is almost genius. But comparing this to what else is on today is like comparing a decent burger with McDonalds. Sure its much better, tastier and probably better food, but it is still a burger. It is not the best steak ever or the lasagne of the Gods, it is a burger. Better than fast food burgers, but a burger nevertheless.
Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti are both absolutely fantastic. Their acting is amazing. The story, as far as it goes, is great. There are a lot of other praise I can give this show, but there are also several negatives.
The side character of Victor seem unnecessary. He is just there, fill little function, and is inserted because... well, no one knows. The same can be said about Oz's mother. Sure, she is there to humanise him, but meh, who cares? Does she really fill a role here? No. The answer is No.
We are also told that Oz is very smart, but is he? I would rather say the rest are pretty dumb. The background story of Hangman Sofia is over the top and feels off and weird. The sound design is usually off and so are the music choices.
I give this a generous 7/10. Mainly being generous because this is much better than most other things on TV. But do not let that fool you. This is still only good, and not on the level some make it out to be.
Evil: How to Survive a Storm (2024)
Best episode of the season
This season has been a bit up and down, and mostly I think it drags a bit and should get on with it. There are only a handful of episodes left, perhaps time to resolve issues and develop the story towards the climax of the show?
This however was excellent. At first I thought it was a bit meh, but as soon as Leland showed up next door and things started to come together this turned into a very good episode. Creepy, exciting, great acting. That storm thing, and prayers was an interesting addition. I still wonder about Lexis and her demon connection, and why that is not explored or developed more - feels like there should be more there.
Dr. Kurt Boggs and Sheryl teaming up was excellent. And Sheryl finally doing something of note on this show made her character so much more interesting.
The ending was also great, setting things up for the coming episodes in a interesting way.
Wonderful episode and I cannot wait for next week.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
A failed attempt
This movie attempts to create some kind of romantic comedy, and it tries to give us a loveable couple to cheer for, and it tries to give us a good sound track. And the story is supposed to be told with realism and jumping back and forth in time and space to give us a artsy type of movie. It fails. Completely.
Not that this movie does not have its merits. The script and dialogue works really well (for what it is), and the acting is mostly okay. Most cinematography is okay or good. But sadly the main premise and why I watched this movie is a complete failure. This is not romantic, this is not funny, it is not insightful. This is just a failed experiment in trying to showcase a relationship with its ups and downs.
The attempt (slightly different) at telling this story, and the okay acting and okay dialogue and script upgrade the movie from total trash to almost passable. For me a 3/10, but this is not a very good movie and should not be recommended to anyone.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Piece of trash with so many famous actors you can restart hollywood
This movie has so many famous people in it that even the extras and background characters look familiar.
On the plus side we get to see Selena Gomez lose her head, and... well, that is pretty much it really.
Everything else is horrible. Sound design is trash, and despite all the talent the acting is like in a 4th grade school play. The directing abysmal, editing suck, and every attempt at humour falls flat. The story, as much is there is one, is cliche and boring. The sets, colouring, costume department, everything, every single thing in this movie is either subpar or horrible.
I cannot believe I wasted my time with this nonsense. A very well deserved 1/10 and probably one of the worst movies I have ever seen.
500 MPH Storm (2013)
This movie is so awful it make onions cry
I wanted to pick a movie with 500 in the title for my 500th review on IMDB and sadly I picked this one.
I am not sure were to start, but this is so cliche that I believe the director and script writers basically copy pasted from other catastrophe movies. And I mean copy pasted every word said, every action taken.
The budget is abysmal. This is 2nd grade play awful in cinematography. Almost every scene is either really bad computer graphics or something they've stolen from some weather channel or youtube clip.
The acting is okay, it is the only thing in this movie which is not the worst I have ever seen.
Well, there you have it. My 500th review on IMDB and it happened to be on one of the worst movies ever made.
Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)
Comic book bonanza, extremely fun, but a nonsensical story
This is a comic nerds wet dream. Everything you think this movie will be, it will be, and a lot, a lot, a lot more. This is 20 comic books smashed together into a Deadpool party. This movie kiss and hug every comic book reader in history and bring so much fun and energy that it is impossible not to get infected and I came out of the theatre smiling.
The movie also, weirdly, work. When you smash so much together into one movie, and have cameos in every corner, and a lot of the story depends on the TVA which many viewers will have never heard of, you are begging to fail. But strangely this does not. The movie is following a logic path and despite all the mayhem and carnage and messy jumping from one universe to the next, it is a direct straight path and never really deviated from it.
It is however here the problem starts.
The story is basically nonsense. It starts weirdly, and it leads nowhere. This is not a MCU saving quest, this will not bring universes together or resolve any continuity issues. All what we are told and see is fun and very entertaining, but what was the point? The movie is trying to sell us on a heartfelt quest of redemption and saving a universe thing, but meh... And Paradox is probably the dumbest villain since the Dune movies. The entire setup, and his reasoning to bring in Deadpool is so dumb and unnecessary I am still shaking my head wondering why.
There are no incursions, no overlapping stories, and the story basically ends were it started. A universe sort of saved I guess, and this Wolverine variant sort of grew as a person I suppose, but yea, meh. And even more meh.
The more I thought about this movie the more "meh" I feel.
And another thing; if you are not a comic book nerd or have not seen all of the movies referenced with lots of cameos from, well... tough. You will not get a lot of this movie.
This is a great entertaining fun bonanza and I am absolutely sure that a vast portion of the human race will see all of these cameos and fantastic fight sequences and be happy and content with that. I am not.
I give this a 6/10. The first Deadpool was a much better movie, and I would also say the second one was better. Still I had a lot of fun and I do highly recommend so go see it. I can also see how this can tie into something bigger coming over the horizon, and I hope that is the case, but this movie by itself is at the end of the day mostly a meh.
---
Edit:
So I just saw the movie again. Now, when I can focus on more than just the spectacle and cameos, I noticed a lot of more issues. This movie is not going to age well.
A few examples is that we never find out what Wolverine actually did, did he kill everyone? Not really clear. And why do not Deadpool travel back in time to get his Wolverine? Why do sling-rings work in the void? Why do Paradox wait to destroy Deadpool's universe? Why not just destroy it?
Those are just a few of the 100s of questions I have now after seeing the movie again. I will lower my score to 5/10, and perhaps even that is too generous.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
Nostalgia, 1980s retro, Eddie and excellent Bacon, but meh not so good
This is not a bad movie, and compared to most of the nonsense we see today this can even be said to be a good or great one. But I do not think it is fair to compare a mediocre sequel to the trash of today, instead it should be compared to really good movies and that is not a comparison Axel F get out of looking positive.
Yea, so this is all you expected it to be. Seen the two first ones? Yes, this is basically in the same category. This is fun, most of the time entertaining, great sound track, and all our favourite characters are back. If that is all you care about, you will love this.
However script is a good thing to have when you want to make a movie, and this severely lacking in that department. The aging heroes are ready for retirement homes and barely able to shot a gun. The acting is passable, but not much more. The directing and cinematography is also just passable, and I think that words sum up this movie very well; this is passable fun 1980s nostalgia, but also not a very good movie.
You can do far worse, so do not let my 5/10 scare you away. Sadly this is one of the best movies of 2024, which is not an endorsement, it is just how things are now.
Oddity (2024)
Not bad and decently creepy but also predictable
I have not seen a good horror movie in a very long time. Sadly this little film does not change that, but it comes decently close.
This movies biggest strength is also its biggest weakness. This builds up tension, drag out long takes with sweeping cameras and the "mystery" unfolds gradually. That works very well, and it ads to the creepy feel and creates an actual horroresque feeling, which few movies nowadays can. But that slow moving and very often unnecessary dragged out scenes and build up also make the movie a chore. Especially together the other main problem with this movie, who the murderer is and what will happen - because that is so easy to predict that I started to check my watch. Get on with it already, we already know how this will turn out, why drag it out?
Above is such a shame, because this is very close to be an excellent horror movie. Less predictability, and less artsy build up, and this 5/10 movie turns into a 8/10 movie.
Although I give this a slightly low score, and I am not really going to recommend this, I am still going to praise this attempt. This is fresh enough, interesting enough, and horror enough to deserve such praise. This is one of the better movies in the genre I have seen in years, but sadly that does not say much. Great effort by those involved though and I hope we can further build upon this good try.
Shogun (2024)
Good watch, but also overrated
This is not as good as many make it out to be. Don't get me wrong, this is, for today, excellent TV, but claiming this is genius or the best show ever is laughable and sad. I get it, you have not seen anything okay on TV in a very long time so when something good comes along you think it is great, great becomes fantastic and so on. But slow down a bit.
This has gorgeous cinematography. Japan has never looked more beautiful. The acting is, for the most part, the main highlight. There are a lot of slow moving pieces, a lot of build up (usually to nothing), and if it wasn't for the acting his would be boring. Several characters are great, and the general story very interesting.
Sadly there also ends the positives.
I am a big fan of the old mini-series which was excellent, and did the story much more justice. The acting on the older version was just as good. Yea, the cinematography was worse and they could not rely on CGi, but the directing, editing and pacing was much, much better.
When I say that this has gorgeous cinematography, we are also shown that. Over, and over, and over again. Slow moving camera shoots, panoramic slow moving camera over a city, within a building, slow moving characters walk around, bow, sit down, bow, have tea, bow and then kill themselves slowly. I get it, it is beautiful, artsy, and it is great filmmaking, but not when you do it 100 times. Each episode can easily be cut down 10min and it will be much better for it.
Another thing that really bothers me is that the antagonistic tone is much more modern in this version. Instead of showing good politics, intrigues, and diplomacy, we are instead shown antagonism. In the old version we got a slow build up of understanding, and the Portuguese, although mostly antagonists, are shown to be just as good and moral as everyone else. In this show, not so much.
I think this is good, and if you have not read the book or seen the original TV show, you are likely to enjoy this a lot more than me. And this is, for today, great TV. But this is also badly edited, badly directed, slow paced, and despite the excellent acting even boring at times. A 5/10, and I do recommend, but I would suggest you go watch the older version instead. Much better TV.
Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Three (2024)
This feels way too long and not a very good ending
The two first instalments were okay/good and set things up pretty well. I think the story could have been cut shorter, but overall we have enough mystery, setup, and entertainment to keep the viewer interested. Sadly they failed to nail the landing. This is convoluted, dragged out, and just goes on and on, having several endings which never is the ending. I was yawning and wondering what to have for dinner rather than being interested in the last battle.
The voice actors mainly do a great job, and this is not horrible, it is just a letdown after having a good setup.
I am not going to go into more details or spoil this, but I honestly think the CW did it better, which should tell you all you need to know.
My buly rekrutamy (2024)
War is fantastic, for those in charge
Another episode directly from the Ukraine MoD comes this fictional piece of war propaganda. This is of course aimed at the millions that fled Ukraine to avoid the pointless slaughter - the recruitment offices have a hard time finding more cannon fodder, so they need to fall back on classic tricks. This is supposed to be a "motivational" documentary? Well, at least they are not hiding it.
The war, so far, has not been a "full-scale" war as the propaganda says. It is laughable to so claim. Nevertheless hundreds of thousands of dead Ukrainian soldiers are littering the battlefield in a war that easily should been avoided. Let's hope US change president and the new one holds true to his promise so we can end this meaningless conflict.
The movie itself contain subpar acting, a writing based on fiction and is not on point. The main problem here is however the directing and editing. Most of the time it is hard to even understand what is going on. And the editing make the entire movie sloppy and jumpy. The "artistic" style feels off, and does nothing to either make the point or win any points with the viewer. We are sort of following with a few soldiers, who of course wave around their amazing fantastic western weaponry. But it is very choppy, and way too propagandistic to feel real.
I think the spin-doctors of Ukraine need to come up with better stuff if they are going to convince more kids to go to the front and die.
My suggestion is to send the entire Rada to the front with sniffy Zelensky in Napoleon outfit waving a flag. That could work...
Legion of Super-Heroes (2023)
Decently fun with great supergirl but corny and boring script
Supergirl in the 31st century fighting alongside bouncing man and triple girl... yea, it is as corny as it sounds.
The voice acting is pretty much great. Meg Donnelly is perfect for supergirl. The story, albeit very simplistic, is okay and we get a movie moving along in a brisk pace with enough action and hero-ism to keep one almost interested.
Sadly this is just boring. Not only does it feel like we have seen this a million times before, but everything is also very predictable, cliche, and lame. The new superheroes of the future are all laughable, and Braniac 5 can only brag about how smart he is every 2 seconds. Man-El was kinda interested, and I love how Supergirl does not hold back in their fight beating him to a pulp.
A 5/10. This is not made for me, but I was decently entertained, so I assume the preteens and teens this was made for probably like this better than I do. Cannot really recommend this, but sure, there are far worst things to watch.
Twisters (2024)
Cliche bonanza in an otherwise okay movie
This is not necessarily a bad movie, it is just so predictable that one know everything from the start. The movie is a 75% copy paste from the 1996 Twister, the rest are cliches which means that you do not even need to watch this movie, you already know exactly what will happen.
I could forgive the copy paste and cliches if the execution was excellent and/or the characters are fun and believable, sadly that is not so.
I ended up giving this movie a 4/10 because this is not incompetent movie making and it is not a bad movie. Most of this is okay. But an okay movie with okay acting copy pasting an older much better movie does not win any awards from me.
If you never saw the original, you might enjoy this a little bit more. Or if you have absolutely nothing else to do, you could do worse. But nah, I cannot recommend this.
Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot (2024)
Powerful, great acting, teary, but not really made for me
This is the sort of film that should win all the Oscars. The acting is magnificent. The message is powerful, teary and both hopeful and sad at the same time. We have a very diverse cast, it is about orphans and neglect. This is the sort of great family drama that always used to win the hearts of critics, but seldom resonate very well with the normal movie goer.
For obvious Hollywood reasons this movie will not win any Oscars, which is a shame because this is a great example of how good movie one can make when not preoccupied with the normal Tinseltown nonsense.
The negative here is that this movie is not for me. I like the occasional teary drama which pulls on all the heart-strings, and this movie is certainly not bad, but I felt myself getting bored and despite the fantastic acting and great storytelling I still could not really emerge myself into the movie. Not sure why, but this movie simply do not appeal to me. This is like watching the Godfather - you know you are watching genius and a brilliant movie but you can still do not pause the movie while making popcorn. Things feels dragged out. I also think that the format might be wrong. Perhaps this should have been made as a mini series or a 1 season TV show instead?
This is one of the better movies I have seen the past years. This reminds me of the fantastic "Room" with Brie Larson putting in one of the best acting performances of all time. And it has a bit of "Sound of Freedom" in it too.
As said, this should win all the Oscars, but it was not really a movie for me. I give this a strong 8/10. If you are in the mood of a powerful movie about trauma, abuse, and misery but also hope, goodness in people and love of family this is the movie for you. If you however do not want to be crying and feel bad about the world we live in, I suggest you probably stay away.
The Boys: The Insider (2024)
Another episode worse than anything on the market
The boys continuous to be the worst TV show in living memory, even making The Acolyte look like a genius show in comparison. All this show has is a couple of good actors and all the gore and nudity that can be allowed. That is it. There is no story, no character development, and nothing make any sort of sense. Just look at Deep in this episode... omg... what a laughable predictable left-wing dream of a character.
How do you make 4 seasons of a TV show and have absolutely no development? Watch the first episode and watch this episode, and check; has anything changed? No. Are everyone still the same character? Yes. What else? Gore. Oh, what else? Nudity.
That is this show. This is made for the lowest.
There are two types of people that like this show. Those with the intelligence of a carrot, and the left-wing evil mob.
Everyone else should do anything but watch this. It cannot get worse.
A very generous 1/10.
Evil: How to Save a Life (2024)
Last week episode skip skip.. characters out of sync and episode lacking focus
A lot of things comes to a head in this episode. Baptisms, dark rituals, remote viewing, Leland doing stuff, grandmother fighting Leland and his plans (or so she thinks).
We also have several cool moments, with the baptism of course as a highlight, but also the ending scene which was magnificent.
Sounds like a great episode eh? So whats the problem?
Well, first of all the trio seem out of focus and Ben is suddenly onboard with this remote viewing nonsense. All the characters seem out of place or like they are not who they used to be. Another issue I have is that the episode drags and pacing is way off. It feels like whomever directed this didn't really know what to do and the editing team just slapped things together with an extra 10min just for fun. Also I like the plot with the daughters the most. Will Lynn become a nun or not? Is Lexis a demon or not?
And what the holy ghost happen to the ending of the last episode? We got a cliffhanger, lots of ghosts, a daughter up screaming and then this week... nothing..? Do the directors and writers even watch their own show? It is the second time this season I get the feeling the show is jumping over an episode. Like there should be another episode before this one.
The entire storytelling is off this season. Going from a great episode to some weird nonsense to another great episode with a cliffhanger and then no follow up and now again a great episode last week and now no follow up.
Get a grip of the show please. 6/10, second lowest score I have given this show.
Evil: How to Dress a Wound (2024)
Great episode, great acting with tension, but also lack in progress
Another great contribution to this show. Still think the grandmother story VS Leland is a bit weird and convoluted. I also think the show sort of forgot about Lexi seeing herself as a demon and having weird meetings, but she got to end this episode with a nice scary moment.
A lot of existential discussions this week. Religion or no religion. Evil or not. Demons or not. Nun or not. Asking a lot of questions, but as usual this show answers few. I am glad that Lynn nun story continues, could even be a sequel in the making with that one - remember where you read it first!
The acting, the characters, and the general feel of the show continues to be the heart. This week we also got a few decently scary moments, and some tension which elevated the story.
There is however not that many episodes left, so I hope they start getting to some answers now. Time to get going towards what I hope to be a great ending on one of my favourite TV shows the past years. Time to cross off a few more demon marks.
A 8/10 based on above, but a strong 8, and as always I look forward to the next instalment.
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 (2024)
Beautiful, interesting, great acting, but also bloated and boring
Whether or not you are going to like this movie probably depends a lot on your attention span. If you do not mind dragged out scenes, long takes going nowhere, and wandering looooong camera shots, and if you have no issue with several stories, told from several different perspectives, dragged out into a 3hrs plus movie, then this might be the perfect movie for you. If you however want action, great pace, and meaningful scenes after meaningful scenes, well, then this is probably not for you.
Me, I end up somewhere in the middle. This is a beautiful movie to watch, the story, albeit dragged out and boring, is also very interesting and told from several perspectives. The acting is wonderful - it is so great to see great actors act greatly again. So seldom that happens nowadays.
As you can probably tell this movie has a lot going for it, but the bloated run time and dragged out storylines almost make it a chore to watch. This probably should have been made into a miniseries and Costner should have had someone slap him over the head once in a while to remind him about the pacing. A couple of more movies to come... I dunno, I hope those are 30min shorter and have slightly better pacing, otherwise I might skip them.
I give this a 7/10 which is probably somewhat generous, but the acting is so great and if nothing else you can sit and dream over the wonderful landscape scenes.
Come on Costner! Stick the landing and you might have a good thing here, but so far its a meh.
MaXXXine (2024)
Fun flashy 1980s nostalgia, but not exactly high art
This is a weird mixture of different types of movies. It is sort of a campy back to the 1980s nostalgia trip, it is sort of a murder mystery (more "slasher"), and it is also the sort of woman wants to break big in Hollywood but has a background from porn cliche. All of those genres, and more, are put together in a movie that really shouldn't work. This should be much worse than it is.
However I had fun with this. I think its the characters, the acting, and it is well directed, and those things together save the movie. With some great music sprinkled on top and some flashy 1980s fun, and yea, well, you have a decent movie.
I am giving this a 7/10. It is probably too high, but in comparison to the absolute trash coming out from Hollywood lately, this is excellent in comparison. As with the first movie "X" I expected nothing but got quite a lot in return.
Despite being kinda silly and a bit campy at times, this is popcorn worthy.
The Acolyte: Teach/Corrupt (2024)
nonsensical and cringe, and filler bad TV this week
This show continuous to be really bad TV. However this week was almost an improvement.
A 2/10 and only really bad TV this week, and perhaps not the vomit inducing filth we got earlier.
However we can here really highlight one of the core problems of this show; the acting. The "twins" lady basically only have one facial expression and we could easily find a better actress at any local drugstore. The Green lady, who was cast due to nepotism, is even worse. The rest have a range from awful to passable. 25% of this show could have been saved by simply casting correctly, and in this episode that becomes clear as day.
Another big problem with this show is the writing, or rather the storytelling. We are 6 episodes in now with about 3 hours of runtime, and what we've been told so far could have easily been told in 40min, or one episode. What have actually happened? We have broken canon on multiple occasion, some Jedi has died for some reason, we've jumped planets several times for some reason, and the twins have switched places and everything move conveniently forward in a very cringe straight line. That is basically it. What is the point here? Where are we going with this story? The "murder mystery" never was a mystery, the weird space witches got to sing cringe and then die. What is the direction? Who is who? Why are the worst most wimpy characters in all of star wars white men? Why is that tiny animal non-binary thing sniffing around very creepily?
Many questions, but sadly apathy is starting to sink in. I simply do not care anymore. This is Star Wars now? Okay, time to move on. I could not care less.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Greatly produced soap opera, only more boring
After the absolute disaster GoT turned out to be, I had absolutely no interest in this show. But some people said it was excellent, as good as GoT was the first seasons and similar praise. Sadly I listened to those voices.
I soon found out that this is nothing more than a soap opera in a medieval setting with great production value. They spent money on this, or at least the ones working on this show know how to use CGi and tools available to sell settings and this world. But other than that and the time period, this is just the same as Days of our lives, Dynasty or similar soaps. On one way even worse because this has ambition, this show wants to be something grand. At least a regular soap knows what it is, and never pretend to be otherwise. This pile of dung tries to fool us into thinking it is a good and well smelling pile, and a easy to swim around in excrement.
As usual with these types of shows, like for example The Boys, they throw in some gore, nudity and pointless sex scenes to win the audience over. A sane person will roll their eyes, but large portions of the plebs always like such things.
Having watched to season 2, episode 3, I can clearly state I have seldom been so bored. The acting is great sure, but not so great that it can save the audience from falling asleep.
There are positive trait, such as the production value and good acting, but the storytelling and characters and this entire world is meh at best, and a dripping turd at its worst moments.
I give this a 3/10 and I will stop watching here in season 2. I see no reason to continue. So boring.
Evil: How to Dance in Three Easy Steps (2024)
Weird filler episode that feels out of place
I am not sure what this episode was for, nor what the intent is. There is basically only two things this episode manage to do. Firstly it skips over the aftermath of last weeks episode, and secondly it set up the grandmother to have a redemption arc. Neither of which is very good writing.
This feels rushed. It is like there should be one more episode in-between here, perhaps they messed up the time table?
The grandmother's potential redeeming I really loath. She has been stupid, hateful, and she has never shown any form of care or empathy towards her family. In fact she has been shown to even hate the husband, and she is certainly ambitious and evil. So I hope this week was just her suddenly hating Leland for some reason, and not the start of her "seeing the light" and becoming good suddenly. Her character need to die, and burn in hell. Or kill everyone and run away with the antichrist. Anything else would just be ridiculous.
The episode itself was very middle-of-the-road, and probably on the lower end, but not bad. It was them skipping over what happened in the last episode, and seemingly looking to rewrite a evil character that bothers. Consequently I give this episode the lowest I have given any episode of Evil so far, a 5/10. Very much watchable, but not very good thinking or writing here.
Another Life (2019)
Cringe space nonsense
Checking around for something sci-fi to watch and I stumble across this little smelly turd. Sadly I did not check the reviews, as I should have. The negative ones have it very correct, and are even too nice I would say.
This show violates scientific principles, entertainment and TV principles, and I personally felt violated by the obnoxious nonsense they filled up this TV show with. Already from the first episode we set the stage for the most politicalised show that they then try to beat us over the head with while we watch the most basic stories.
I was admittedly laughing out loud a few times, but that had nothing to do with quality. Instead it is the atrocious acting, badly written dialogue which together with the politicalised nonsense make everything we see incredibly cringe.
This is so cringe that by the 3rd episode of the first season I think my spine actually cracked. A very generous 2/10 because not everything is awful, but this is something you have to stay far away from.
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023)
Boring nonsense and horrible casting
This movie is so uninteresting and nonsensical, I am not even sure why it was made. What is the point with this movie? What is it even about? And when you cast the least likeable actress in the whole of Hollywood as the lead, well, then you will of course have a disaster on your hands.
This movie has nothing. No content, no story, no different acts that separates the movie into coherent parts, and most definitely no actors. The casting choices here is contemptuous, with the mentioned lead as bottom of the barrel.
And this movie runs for 2 and a half hours! How?
The only real redeeming treat I can think of is that the costume department did not mess up too much.
1/10 and please stay away.
Evil: How to Fly an Airplane (2024)
Could have been amazing, but the daughter subplot drags it down
Overall a great episode. Exciting, greatly paced, interesting story-arc, great acting and we also get to change set pieces a bit (although fake of course).
What drags this episode down is the daughters subplot with a sudden hole in the basement, lots of bats suddenly, and suddenly grandma back with the nanny conveniently missing. Just a series of badly written scenes so convoluted I was rolling my eyes. That entire plotline was so poorly executed I was almost thinking I was watching an episode of the Acolyte...
The acting still save the episode, and that subplot, but that part of the episode drags the score down considerably, for an episode which otherwise was one of the best of the show.
However this remain one of the best TV shows in recent memory. I really wish they kept it going. Feels like there is so much more one can do with this world. Hopefully they can do a spinoff with the daughter Nun, perhaps she can meet up with Ariel DuBois and solve spooky crimes together. Free pitch to showrunners of Hollywood.
