Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Maybe the best film of 2016...
In the meanwhile, in the other part of Pacific Ocean, have been produced many films that they told us nothing. Nothing special. Nothing new. It was just another year of cinema in there... Special effects and fancy things... But this is not the cinema I use to call art.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople came out of nowhere for me. I randomly heard about it. And it was a "magestical" experience! It's been a long time since a film alternated, with so beautiful way, my feelings. I almost felt everything: burst into laughter, be touched, there's also a little bit of suspense! I totally enjoyed it!
Casting was marvelous! Every actor has chosen for a reason. And what about our protagonists? I enjoyed them! There was an interesting chemistry between a kid and an old man!
Locations were wonderful. And the cinematography was excellent! I suggest this movie.
9 out of 10!
The Neon Demon (2016)
So and so
Technically the film was fine. No doubt about it! Its screenplay had potentials but Refn didn't make it. He dealt with an interesting topic but he didn't "sell" it as it could've been sold. It was facile and meretricious.
Otherwise, I enjoyed its acting and its music score, which was very suitable! I have only seen 2 Refn's films, and the other one was a big disappointment for me (Valhalla Rising). But I'm sure that Refn didn't direct his magnum opus yet... He's quite young and talented... And I'll be waiting for it!

Oi Germanoi xanarhontai... (1948)
One of the best Greek film ever!
There are some Greek films that they could've been amongst the classic films, worldwide. And this film is one of them. I know why it isn't, but I think it's late to be now. Anyway, whoever is curious to watch it, I suggest it without a second thought!
There are too many things we can say about this masterpiece. But I am not going to write a whole book, so I have to choose some of them...
For starters, we have to examine the year of its release. It was the year of 1948! In this year, in Greece, were taking place a Civil War after WWII. And this film expresses the feelings of simple people who were tired of killing and fighting and bloodshed. From 1940, when Greece entered in the WWII, until 1949, the war was continuous! And the simple people craved for a peaceful life! And this film "spoke" on behalf of them! And its "words" were powerful.
The screenplays of its writers used to write comedy scenarios. (Alekos Sakellarios - Christos Giannakopoulos) The genre of this film, we can say, is comedy-drama, but first of all is a satirical film, with capital "s". Scenario is based on theatrical work of Sakellarios-Giannakopoulos. And it's modern, clever and innovative at the time of its release.
A man who's tired of endless bloodshed, first WWII and now Civil War, with Greeks kill Greeks, he thinks that Greeks did not learn their lesson about war (and its cruelty)... and one day they will be punished! So, he fells asleep, waiting the lunch, and his fear comes true. Germans are back! Actually the whole story is a dream of this man. Also, old days in Greece, people used to live in houses with common courtyard, this one is a "miniature" of the Greek society back then. There is a leftist man, there is a rightist man, there is a man who just wants peace e.t.c.
The starring actor was one of the best Greek comedians. Argyropoulos and he (Vassilis Logothetidis) were the gods of Greek comedians on theater. The first didn't make it on cinema and he starred on only one movie, but Logothetidis played on cinema until his death. This film looks like it was written for him! he seized the opportunity and his role was more than splendid! From now on, Greek considered him the best Greek comedian!
I think without Logothetidis the film wouldn't be the same, but the rest of crew was perfect, as well! We can see a very good performing from all of them, one by one! Direcation is perfect, cinematography and editing, too!
There is no even a single reason that that makes me to vote 8 or 9, I vote 10 out of 10! It is a masterpiece! I hope you will find a way to watch it, and you'll see...
O filos mou o Lefterakis (1963)
One of the best Greek comedy film
Film based on a theatrical work of Alekos Sakellarios. And the adaption is full of life and as good as it gets!
Screenplay is clever. An unfaithful husband thinks up an imaginary- friend, for covering his dirty-deeds. His wife has been informed about his scheme and she decides to present that imaginary-friend to her husband. And he can do nothing about it! A pleasant and crazy film, with splendid dialogs.
And what can I say for its actors? Dinos Iliopoulos at his best! Maro Kontou and Kostas Voutsas, too! Yiorgos Konstantinou and Kaiti Panou best for supporting roles.
And what can I say for the rest of crew? Alekos Sakellarios is a master of easy-watching and,at the same time, very good films and he proved it once again... Cinematography by Nikos Dimopoulos who was one of the most successful Greek cinematographers, especially with Finos Film! And on set-decoration there was the beast of Greek Cinema, Markos Zervas! Music is composed by Gerasimos Lavranos. Everything's perfect!
The only reason that I vote 9 out 10 is the musical-boring-scenes... A lot of Greek film have those scenes. I don't understand this obsession: Actors are sitting on their table and we just watch the singer. But anyway, I have to defend this nice film: Actors are not just sitting and watching the performers, they involved somehow! But... almost 10 minutes of musical-boring-scene is quite enough for 9 out 10. It deserves to be watched by all who likes Greek comedy films. One of the best and it is as simple as that!
To pithari (1962)
"To pithari" is a pleasant film, nothing more nothing less...
Film is about how poor people could be corrupted by money. A simple but important topic for a screenplay.
There are two poor friends that they are construction workers. And they found in the building site a urn full of golden pounds. They thought that their problems would be solved with that, but they weren't...
This film is not a great movie. But it is very pleasant (easy- watching). Screenplay is also interesting and it is based on a Bost's (cartoonist) story. The starring actors are doing their best thou. Music is just fine, and it is composed by Giannis Markopoulos. Editing seems to be perfect, Aristeidis Karydis-Fuchs is a master of editing...
From the other hand, direction and cinematography have lack of inspiration/imagination and that affects the whole atmosphere/style of the film.
I vote 5 out of 10.
