Meet Me Next Christmas (2024)
Surprisingly delightful....
6.8/10 (7) (Definitely Recommend)
I was browsing all the streaming services for a movie to watch when this one caught my eye. Immediately after watching the trailer, I wanted to watch this movie. However, I didn't have very high hopes for it. In the end, I would say it only slightly exceeded expectations.
The only thing I'll say, that may spoil the movie slightly, is that I should've been more aware at the beginning. The ending was not what I was expecting until about halfway through the film.
While "Meet Me Next Christmas" isn't super unique in its storytelling, it's the chemistry of the actors and characters that make it an enticing watch. Christina Milian and Devale Ellis bond very really well together in the pursuit of a non-existent Pentatonix ticket. There's a fun bond between the two that makes you cheer them on as they seek that ticket.
There's a humanity to the story. It goes beyond a love story, but includes an emotional connection between strangers. It's the Christmas spirit that really gets it going. Plus, Pentatonix for me has always been associated with Christmas because that's the type of songs I first heard when I was introduced to them.
Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and I would definitely watch it again. I enjoyed the love and human connections. While it's not super Christmas-y in its storytelling, for some like me, it may get you into that Christmas type of feel. It's a cute romcom with great chemistry between the leads, and while it has aome parts that are weird, they eventually make the film work. The end end overall is that it may seem cheesy to some, to others I do believe you'll have fun with it.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Venom: The Last Dance (2024)
Terrible... simply terrible.....
4.8/10 (Don't Recommend)
Another trilogy film that falls way short of expectations. While the first two films had fun stories, good chemistry, and fun banter, this film had virtually none of that. It felt like things were just being done for the motions. Venom and Eddy were boring. I love Tom Hardy but not even he could save this film. "The Last Dance" was a terrible naming convention for this film. It was based on one particular scene, that while it's a connecting scene to previous films, is not entirely necessary and is nothing more than a what the heck moment.
This isn't an emotional movie. While the previous films make you excited, sad, and maybe a little angry, this film makes you feel bored, uninterested, and unemotional. The antagonist aspect falls entirely short of understanding. Even my friend more familiar with the universe than me didn't even know who the bad guy was or what role they played.
Honestly, this was a waste of a film. If you want to see it I strongly urge you to wait until it's available on stream. "The Last Dance" is not even worth a cheap theatre night. Chemistry, emotions, and comedy are either short or non-existent in this film. I think it's better to save your money on this one.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Smile 2 (2024)
Don't smile around me ever again....
7.9/10 (8) (Definitely Recommend)
I gain and lose nothing by trying to convince you that this movie is 100% worth seeing in theatres, but I'm here to tell you that this movie is 100% worth seeing. The execution is perfect by the way the camera captures what's on screen and it's enhanced by the unsettling score. The scares are actually scary, so much so, my stomach started to clench and my heart was racing uncomfortably by the end. It psychologically screws with your head so much so that you begin to feel like you're part of the movie and you begin to question reality. I've never seen Naomi Scott in anything before, but she was fantastic in this movie. She executed the downward spiral of a psychologically disturbed woman very well. The singer/dancer aspect of the film works so well because of the flow of the bodies. They really creep you out. Honestly, I feel like I could watch this film again, and still get absolutely spooked. So if you're looking for a new horror film to watch this October then this is one you won't want to miss out on. Great music, fantastic scares, and a story that works on its own separate from the first film.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Piece by Piece (2024)
Flashy, but slightly emotionless....
6.6/10 (Recommend, but not in theatres)
This is a mostly family friendly because it's a LEGO-esque style movie, but in reality it's definitely not geared towards families. Nothing really drew me to this film other than LEGO. I like Pharrell Williams' music, but he's not someone I'm dying to listen to or see.
I like the style he decided to take in telling his life story. As a LEGO movie you're able to create anything you want with whatever your imagination can come up with, but despite the flashy pieces and the catchy tunes that some of us would recognize, it still falls flat. I don't feel this biopic is a "woah is me" story despite the rags to riches perspective, but the way things are told you don't get to truly feel the hardships that Pharrell went through to make it big.
The film isn't a total waste of time. I never realized how big of an impact on music that Pharrell had. Creating music for artists such as Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Gwen Stefani, and Justin Timberlake to name a few. So I did learn something. I would definitely watch this movie once, but I wouldn't see it in theatres if I could go back.
Overall, it's a 90 minute surface story that gives only a fractional bit of info on the road Pharrell to make it big. It definitely has a "go after what you want" subplot, but you also need to work hard. It's a flashy film that uses LEGO, but it never truly hits the emotional chord. I wouldn't recommend seeing in theatres, or as a family (unless you like the genre of music). There's only one swear word in the film, but it's mostly bleeped out except for maybe three times. In the end though you can't deny the impact of Pharrell. He's had his hand in some of the biggest songs that I've heard, but would never have pegged him to.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Land of Bad (2024)
You can feel the danger close.....
8.5/10 (Highly Recommend)
I absolutely enjoyed this film. It had my heart racing for a good portion of the film. Even though I gave some thought to the next move, I didn't let myself be bothered too much with trying to figure things out because I wanted to enjoy the film.
The plot and eyes in the sky aspect isn't anything new to the war genre, but it feels fresh in terms of the communications aspect. Sometimes things go to hell and you can't use your radio and you have to improvise, so I enjoyed that. The film also shows a huge human aspect that not many people may know about drone operators and how these things work.
The cinematography was outstanding. Everything from bombs being dropped to the billets whizzing by, you feel like you're in the action. If you need to hold your breath you hold your breath too, and if the character on-screen is feeling the tight space of enemy nearby, you feel that too.
Honestly, I would love to watch this movie again on my tv rather than on my phone, but the fact it works so well on a small device is comforting. The film is slow and fast when it needs to be. It makes you feel both the tightness and the space that comes with a mission. This film is definitely a Hollywood film. There's certain liberties taken to make it more exciting. You're never going to have a 100% completely accurate war film, but this one feels relatively close. It also doesn't feel cheesy like early 2000s war films. It's definitely more solid than that.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Strul (2024)
Nothing special, but still entertaining.....
6.4/10 (Recommend)
The whole wrongfully imprisoned thing is what caught my eye for this one, but I didn't exactly watch enough of the preview to realize it was a foreign language film. So once again it's a balancing act of enjoying what's on-screen while trying to understand context by reading the subtitles.
This was an enjoyable film. It's a very standard film that is predictable if you're smart enough, but I didn't catch certain things soon enough. That being said, even though I felt a little foolish, I still enjoyed the film.
I liked the chemistry of the actors, the story had already caught my eye, and despite the 98 minute runtime you still get a complete beginning, middle, and end completion that is satisfying. A few things feel a bit beyond realistic, but it doesn't take away.
I would watch it again because it's entertaining and engaging. It's fun, and has a satisfying end. The chemistry of actors is good, and the cuteness between Filip Berg and Amy Deasismont is what kind of kept me going until the end. Again, it is a generic story about a wrongful conviction and a man just trying prove his innocence, but good chemistry keeps you until the end.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024)
A simple, 90 minute story with no controversy.....
6.7/10 (Definitely Recommend)
There's nothing crazy unique about this film, but it's simple and enjoyable. It's super family friendly with nothing added to make it weird or controversial. It's a movie like "IF" that reminds us that we all need to have a little imagination sometimes to make things exciting. The cast has great chemistry together. Perhaps they're a little rigid at times because the film isn't very emotional in any sort of way. It still makes you laugh a little, but more so chuckle. I think this is a good film for the whole family, but it would probably be geared towards 12 and under roughly. However, any age could certainly enjoy it. While I ended the film smiling the antagonist of the film is weak, and the send off is mediocre, but better than I expected. Still, I'd watch this one again.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)
A joke of a film unfortunately....
5.3/10 (Don't Recommend)
Oftentimes when I see a review, or reviews, of movies before I go see them and they're on the negative side. I try and push them aside. I hope I'll see something the reviewer didn't see and have a better outcome. Unfortunately, that is not the case for "Folie á Deux".
My concluding thoughts on the film were, "man what a waste." The first "Joker" film is amazing. It's fun, exciting, and you have someone to root for. This movie is utterly boring and useless. It's not funny. It's depressing and not memorable. It lacks actual character, and I feel like it gives me no one to root for.
While some could argue that the soundtrack is good, I personally think it's a distraction. Every time a musical number comes up, just as I was beginning to enjoy a sequence, I felt like the winds in the sail were blown out because it takes away from the pacing of the film. I personally think the musical numbers should've been worked in with something happening on screen pertinent to the movie.
I'm indifferent to Joaquin Phoenix in this one. He definitely sold the depressing aspect of the film, but scenes where there should've been energy, he definitely lacked. Lady Gaga feels like she's just trying to salvage her career. I don't know if she's still producing music, but there was a lacklustre performance from her. She's also the only reason I believe this film was a musical. If she's not in it then I think it would've been a normal film.
Overall, it's a long two hours of nothingness. The ending is atrocious and the beginning is forgettable. The middle is dredged by an ebb and flow of enjoyable film interspersed with terribly paced musicals. Also, it was difficult to understand the spoken word at times in general. Mix that with a musical and sometimes I was hoping I didn't miss anything important. If I knew then what I now, I would've definitely waited for the film to hit a digital stream. For me it's not even worth going on a cheap night, nor if someone was willing to pay for my ticket to go just to keep them company. But I can't keep you from going so the choice is always yours....
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Transformers: The Last Knight (2017)
I loved it and you can't take that away from me....
7.4/10 (Definitely Recommend)
As I work my way through the series there's no doubting that the first two are the best, but as it I got past three and four I felt like the love would be lost. "Dark of the Moon" was up there for me, but "Age of Extinction" was completely flat footed. It was too long, the animation was terrible, and my heart didn't feel any connection. For this film, I'm genuinely shocked that people hated it so much.
Despite the pacing being a little off course for the first third of the film, I found that once the footing was discovered it became an emotional entanglement. I felt the loss and betrayal. I felt the action and the heroism. There's more heart here than the last film and I appreciate that. It's genuinely easy to cheer for a fantastic finish.
Mark Wahlberg is still a little weird for me, but he's definitely better in his sequel than he was in the first film. Sir Anthony Hopkins is definitely a love for me. He brings an old school feel to a new movie. Laura Haddock could've been a little more for me. While she was good, she did feel a little rigid. You could feel a spark of chemistry starting to come between her and Wahlberg, but it never truly came to a complete fruition.
Lastly, I liked the story. It felt a little off putting at first with the whole middle-ages segment, but once it all comes together with the modern age it feels fulfilling. The clash between old and new was a great liking for me. Including an old tale with a new beginning, or what's supposed to be a new beginning, kept my blood flowing for the last third of the film.
Overall, I would watch this one again. While it's visually explosive it still feels more settling than "Age of Extinction". The acting is a lot better especially by Mark Wahlberg. There a genuine emotion behind everything here and that's what will bring me back again in the future.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Wolfs (2024)
George and Brad are the only reasons to watch this....
6.5/10 (Recommend)
George Clooney and Brad Pitt are a couple of my favourite actors so I decided to check out the movie sooner rather than later. I feel like if you're not a fan of either man then you may not find any enjoyment in this film. It's a very standard, mediocre film. There's a few chuckling moments throughout with their classic banter. Similar to "Oceans", but not as great. I'd say it's a slow paced movie. The story is alright, and it makes sense. The action sequences are okay. There's nothing that really goes bang for a majority of the film. Your heart rate won't be getting up and it's non-emotional. This is a pass the time kind of film with the main focus being Clooney and Pitt. Otherwise, I don't really see myself watching this one again other than for them.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
The Wild Robot (2024)
Love is all things.....
8.6/10 (Highly Recommend)
A wonderful film that shows the strongest powers of love.... When a robot named Roz winds up a random island with creatures she can't understand. She begins a protocol to learn how to understand them, and with enough motivation a beautiful relationship is born.
This is an absolutely outstanding film that is a must see in theatres. The actors to voice Roz and the animals is perfect. There's a lot of emotions to this film, and it gently talks about losing someone you love without all the darkness.
There's some good moments where you'll laugh, and there may be some moments where a tear is jerking from your eye, but in the end it's all about acceptance. The underlying tone of the film is that it doesn't matter if you're different, love can conquer all.
This is definitely a film you need to experience in theatres. Just for the visuals and the music. You don't necessarily need to see it in 3D or anything like that, but to capture the emotions properly I definitely think theatres.
The whole family can enjoy this. While there was a moment or two of slight adult humour it is a clean movie. It doesn't exasperate being naughty or dirty. It's truly a film about love and acceptance and that's about as much as I can say that won't give away anything.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Never Let Go (2024)
Went slightly better than anticipated....
6.8/10 (Recommend)
I don't think this movie is bad, but for all the tension it creates I feel that the ending isn't the complete justice that is being sought for. A story about a family who can't leave the safety of their house without a rope around them because an evil lurks in the forest. Everything comes into question when one of the children begin to question if the evil is real.
Halle Berry is pretty decent in this film, but I don't think it's her performance that carries the story. It's Anthony B. Jenkins and Percy Daggs IV that make you care the slightest about the come of things. They may be young, and I wouldn't call this their strongest performance, but they have lots of potential as actors.
The music is pretty top notch for creating the fear and tension. It knows how to elevate the visuals in ways that seeing things alone won't help. Though the cinematography is good in creating that tension and unknown as well.
I would watch this again because it gave me the heebie jeebies just enough to feel frightened at times, but I wasn't overly unsettled that I couldn't see an outcome a mile away. There's a terrific score that trumps everything and enhances the story. While the ending is kind of anti-climatic it was acceptable for me and I didn't hate myself for sitting through the film.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Transformers One (2024)
Definitely worth rolling into theatres for....
7.2/10 (Definitely Recommend)
I don't really know the story of the Transformers other than what I've seen in the movies so it took a bit of time for some of the characters to click in such as Bumblebee. Despite super lack of knowledge I was thoroughly entertained and wasn't really sure what would happen next. As things clicked in, I knew what to expect for an ending, but everything in between was a question mark.
The animation is absolutely amazing. It feels very much real, and a bit of an exaggeration, but almost doesn't feel like animation. The cinematography is great. Everything is captured very well especially the battle scenes. In 3D I feel like the film blurs a bit to truly enjoy the view, but the outcome is still enjoyable.
The acting is good, and it kind of kindles some of the vague memories I have about watching "Transformers" as a kid and young teen. No one felt out of place for me, and the emotions behind the voice fell in line with the facial expressions to kindle the emotion needed to tell the story.
Overall, I liked this film so much that I definitely want to go back and watch the live action films again. I always had some enjoyment in them. For this film, while 3D did work and was enjoyable, I think you can find just as much happiness in a regular showing. You also don't need to know the story of the legends. This movie does a good enough job to introduce you to the world, and will actually help understand who is who in other iterations of the franchise.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
The Dive (2023)
Not great, but now I don't want to dive....
5.6/10 (Kind of Recommend)
It's an alright film that is about two sisters who go diving and encounter danger almost immediately when one of the sisters is hit by rock and trapped. "The Dive" does a fine enough job at hitting the terror points for those who might feel pressure from not being able to breathe underwater. For me it didn't really hit any emotional points. Sure I wanted them to survive and make the return to the surface, but I never felt any fear or joy for their actual situation. The runtime feels long despite only being 91 minutes long. It feels similar to "Fall", but instead of being 2,000 feet in the air they're about 100 feet below. It's a lot more of a dry story that doesn't really do much. While I eventually felt entertained it doesn't spark anything in me to really watch it again. There's no right time to watching this film. You either watch it or you don't.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
28 Weeks Later (2007)
Unsettling yet satisfying....
7.1/10 (Definitely Recommend)
It's been a hot minute since I've seen any of the "28 Later" movies, but I was sad to find out you can't get "28 Days Later" anywhere because of copyright issues. So I had to settle for "28 Weeks Later", but I'm not complaining.
From the moment the movie starts my heart is racing and my stomach is churning because these are some of my least favourite zombies ever. The fact that they can break down doors and run as fast, if not faster than you, is super disturbing.
The big thing that makes everything work is the cinematography. It's shaky, it's grainy, it's up close, and it gets you feeling claustrophobic. It makes you feel like you can't escape the nightmare. The snarls, the bites, and the blood make it all equally disturbing and distasteful, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
I would say 95% of the film is actually good. It's only when it starts to near the end where it just becomes a mess. At the same time, this isn't a chaos that anyone is used to, so it's reasonable the logic goes out the window and people begin to screw up. Still, it doesn't make me feel completely content about the outcome.
Overall, I would definitely watch this one again and I'm looking forward to "28 Years Later" coming out next year. It's unfortunate that, unless you buy a physical copy of the movie, you won't be able to watch "28 Days Later". As for this film it's viral. It'll make you wish it would all stop. It sickening and tense, and I love it. Don't want to ever experience it, but I'll take it in movie form.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
Parroting the first film is the downfall of this one....
5.9/10 (Don't Recommend)
The sequel does not measure up to the first film. I was not as excited, scared, or enthralled about it. I didn't like the direction that this one went. Bringing the original cast back would've worked if the way forward wasn't what it was. I liked Jenna Ortega joining in. She was fun, and a good love interest. While there were funny parts it tries too hard to live up to the original, and the blood and gore scenes work, but again feel like a copy and paste of the first film. Therefore, this feels like a cliche, and almost parody-like, of the first film. In the end, I would stick with just the original "The Babysitter" movie. That one was fun and enjoyable.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
The Babysitter (2017)
Surprisingly delightful....
6.8/10 (7) (Definitely Recommend)
Honestly, I'm surprised I'm saying this, but I loved this movie enough to give it two thumbs up on Netflix. New slashers are okay to be enjoyed. They can call on the classics and use the cliches that were used to.
The acting was good and enjoyable. Samara Weaving is spicy yet spooky. Don't let her hotness fool you, she's out for blood. Judah Lewis was very enjoyable, and so convincing that you actually want to cheer for him every step of the way. Robbie, Hana, Bella, and Andrew are each enjoyable in their own ways. Andrew Bachelor was probably the funniest and most likeable of the supporting actors.
While the cinematography isn't anything to write home about, it's very much crucial in making everything work. Whether it's a POV shot, a pull you right into the tension shot, or simply making enjoy a fluffy moment until death strikes, the camera work was awesome.
There's a lot of blood in this film with some classic teen sensuality that goes with the territory, but it isn't all fun and games. Least of all if you're the prey. Don't let who's acting in this movie fool you. They actually do a pretty good job, and it's such a good slasher it may get your stomach churning. I would definitely watch this one again.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Speak No Evil (2024)
Wasted potential....
5.2/10 (Save your money)
Apparently there is an originally to this film that only came out two years ago, but I just found out tonight. Obviously I have no comparison, but even if this wasn't a remake, it feels like a waste of time.
The acting is not good except that of James McAvoy, but even he can't save this film. He's the one with the most animation while everyone else feels more rigid. The chemistry is kind of there, but always just out of reach for true potential. Didn't matter if it was a light and delightful scene, or dark and life-threatening scene, I didn't feel any sort of emotional connection with the characters. The fear just wasn't there, and the courage.... Well, the courage maybe got to me slightly, but not enough to warrant appreciation for the act.
I liked the concept of the story with the psychological games that comes with it near the end, but the execution ultimately falls short. There's little tension building with the little tics that take place throughout the film, and again it comes down to everything feeling rigid.
Overall, the movie is slow, lacks the build-up that would get your heart going, and the acting is rigid. The only real excitement comes at the end when you hope everyone dies to make worth the drawn out theatrics. If I had the choice over again I wouldn't have seen this one in theatres, not even a cheap night. It comes down to streaming or nothing.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
How to Be Single (2016)
Cute romcom.....
6.4/10 (Recommend)
I'm actually very surprised that I enjoyed this movie. I thought by the end that I would feel like I wasted two hours of my life, but there's good substance to the film. It feels similar to "What to Expect When You're Expecting" except instead of couples at very stages of pregnancy is four women at various stages of their dating lives.
I liked the actors chosen for the film. No one feels out of sorts and I also like that there was a male perspective to the whole relationship thing despite it being slightly on the back burner. Surprisingly did not hate Rebel Wilson in this one. She wasn't completely over the top which made her more bearable compared to other roles.
The story is pleasing and relatable to some peoples lives to a varying degree. The outcome is pleasing and there still manages to be an emotional background despite some of the more wild party aspects of the film.
Overall, I enjoyed it and would definitely watch again. I feel like this would be a dating for a while type movie. Again, the acting isn't bad, the story is somewhat relatable, it's somewhat funny, and has an emotional tone to it. All that to say, don't go expecting the most mind boggling, figured out the dating scene type movie. Just go in and have fun with it. Lastly, I'm happy to have finally found the taxi driver who's broken cinema, and that's all I'll say.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
The Watchers (2024)
Liked, and enjoyed it, but the first half is too boring....
5.8/10 (Partially Recommend)
I had wanted to see this in theatres, but never made it in to see it. I'm glad I didn't cause I was overly impressed with it. Not an exact timeframe, but the first 45-55 minutes was very boring. I wasn't engaged at all and I was regretting putting this film on. I know there needs to be a build-up of sequences for the excitement to come but it felt like things were puttering. The final 45-55 minutes were very much engaging and a lot more enthralling. My heart began to race, I was getting nervous for the outcome, and just overall enjoyed myself a lot more. The ending for me was definitely worth waiting for, but I don't know that it was enough to make me watch this film again. If I do, it would be in a year or so. The actors were alright overall, but until the climax and excitement show up, they don't really give you any reason to feel emotional for their situation. I'm not one for fictional books very often, but the movie did peak my interest to potentially read the book someday.
Overall, it's fine, but don't let the boredom consume you. Potentially worth seeing multiple times, but on a scale of once a year. Relatively emotionless, but the climax and ending get your heart going a bit. It barely saves itself by the end, but not enough to escape the 5 zone.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Pared con pared (2024)
Simple, cute, and a little funny....
6.5/10 (Recommend)
This movie pretty much met the expectations I had for it. Based on the trailer and poster photo I felt it was going to be simple, cute, and a little endearing. I couldn't really ask for much more.
The chemistry of the actors was good and turned into adorable by the end. I do wish that perhaps they met sooner, and therefore things went differently at the concert hall, but you can't have two adorable moments so it does work out.
The story is nothing special, but is still endearing. The two meet as neighbours on a very rocky start and slowly develop a connection that becomes more true as time goes on. The music though a little repetitive works perfectly with all that is going on. It's the basis for the film to work.
The thing that irked me most is how the subtitles worked with the spoken word. I don't know Spanish, but I could make out enough that what was being said, and what was being translated, did not add up. Easy example would be, the spoken word is "Óscar", but the translation is "hi" or "hey". Others are full phrases that I can't remember off the top of my head, but would be out of synch or not seem to show up when the word was being said.
Overall, this is a very average film at 6/10. Nothing is special about it, but it will make you feel the love. Don't expect to cry or well up, but you'll feel the cute emotions if your heart will let you. It's also a little funny at times and that's why I liked it. I would definitely watch it again.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
Inside Man: Most Wanted (2019)
A mediocre film that entertains....
6.4/10 (Would Recommend)
This movie was recently added to Netflix so I checked out the preview for the film and it peaked my interest. I didn't realize going into it that it was a sequel to the 2006 film of the same name. With that I had no prior standard for how this film should be.
The acting is simple, and at a mediocre standard. I liked Aml Ameen's energy throughout. If it wasn't for his constant charisma I think I would've gotten bored. The other actors are alright, but are either too rigid, or are closed off emotionally because of the masks.
The way the film is shot and cut is only satisfying once everything has concluded. Throughout I didn't like the constant close-ups, and at times, quick cuts, but they work out to have kept me guessing throughout the film when I thought I knew what was happening.
Overall, this is isn't an overstimulating film, but it still entertains. If you never watched the first film I think you'll enjoy it, but apparently it's a trash film if you have seen the original. I liked it enough that I would watch it again just for the clandestine feeling it gives and the outcome that ensues.
That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!
The Greatest Beer Run Ever (2022)
Book and movie compliment each other....

Today I finished "The Greatest Beer Run" book so I felt I was ready to finally venture into the movie, and I'm glad I did book and then film. There's always going to be more depth to a book than there is a film, but I was slightly disappointed at some of the changes to the film that made it more engaging but it makes sense in the end.
From the very beginning it's an emotional journey. Laughter is hard to come by after 20 minutes because you know the journey will be harrowing. I was pleasantly surprised at how well Zac Efron fit into the role of Chickie Donahue though he seems to lose his accent at times. The actors who portray the friends of Chickie, despite their unknowns to me, fit extremely well and bring great energies to their roles.
The visuals are simple yet stimulating. They bring the story to life without being fake. Whether it's sets or CGI it still works in the end. The sounds bring the war zone to life along with the music that makes you feel the emotional loss.
Overall, the film does a much better job than I expected for telling the story. Big thing is though, you need to read the book to make it an all around satisfactory experience, otherwise you're only getting a portion of what's being told. A lot of reviews knock this film because it harps on the aspect that the Vietnam War was a sh*tstorm. They don't focus on this story specifically where it brings other sides of the world together through the most psychotic morale trip ever.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
A terrific sequel worthy of Beetlejuice.....

While the original "Beetlejuice" is weird, creepy, and discomforting, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" one ups slightly with all those things and then adds a heebie jeebie type feel. While it's not a jump scare movie there are certain scenes that made me feel a little spooked.
The story is more engaging and entertaining than the first film. There's more emotions and caring to everything. There feels like a bit more to the substance of the film than just a copy and paste of the original film. It feels fresh and new while also maintaining a Tim Burton vision.
I more so enjoyed the actors than the actual acting. For me it was a smidgen better than the first film. Michael Keaton is more awesome this time around and Winona Ryder just feels like the same character but all grown up now. I still don't care much for Catherine O'Hara, but the addition of Willem Dafoe was half of what I needed. Jenna Ortega wasn't over the top impressive, but her chemistry slid right in perfectly.
Overall, the sound and visuals were everything that makes this a Beetlejuice movie. Really enjoyed the sets and the animations that went in to make this movie work. The acting was what it needed to be. None of this exaggeration to be better than the first film. Everyone seems to act themselves naturally and it comes out with happiness. It's more ghoulish and afterlife-y. From someone who went from disliking the first film to finding it enjoyable, I would definitely recommend checking this one out in theatres because it's as good in my opinion.

Beetlejuice (1988)
Time changes opinion....

When I was in my teenage years this movie straight up weirded me out. The Family Channel (Disney) would consistently play "Beetlejuice", it seemed, every weekend. No matter how many times I tried to watch it, I could never get into. Now roughly fifteen years later I've given it an honest chance, and I will say that surprisingly, it was an enjoyable movie.
This feels like a simple film that doesn't do too much with anything. I don't know if the visual effects were anywhere near groundbreaking back in 1987/88, but they still hold up amazingly well thirty-five plus years later. The sets are simple. There's a nice gradual transition from normal and living to weird and otherworldly.
The acting is good, and I have no complaints on the actors selected for the film. I will say it's super weird for me seeing a young Alec Baldwin. This is the youngest I've ever seen him in a film. Winona Ryder is fantastic. This is the first film I've ever seen her in and definitely stole the spotlight with her quirkiness and dark persona.
Overall, the story is kind of mediocre. It's nothing crazy, but perhaps that's why it does so well. There's a good runtime, but it still feels sluggish at times. I wouldn't say anything is bad about the film it's just not an out of this world kind of movie. If you never seen the movie before, or you've seen, but just never liked it and it's been awhile. I would recommend giving it another try even though it's a weird, comedy-horror film that is visually appealing, and has an awkward story with very good characters.
