Kidulthood (2006)
Atrociously ugly and a finncial disaster, thankfully.
If this in any way resembles the lives of young black kids in London, then I feel sad for the insult this film offered. Lives of bragging, insults, violence, abuse and unthinking obsessions with clothes, money and status, indifference to the concerns and suffering of others. This is truly the portrayal of the nasty survival of the fittest that the right wing elite want us all to believe, that people are born nasty, violent and selfish and abusing and treading on others is the norm, knowing nothing of compassion, concern and understanding.
The Power of the Dog (2021)
Masterpiece!
Great movie! Visually stunning landscapes of Montana their vast emptiness giving them a disturbing quality. The slow character development is gripping, especially the realisation of the homosexuality of the Cumberbatch macho cowboy character and his foolish conviction that the boy, he's attracted to is weak, and that he is somehow going to make him into a man. In spite of the fact that this falsely macho character, his front to hide his true self, has attended Yale, the boy makes a complete fool of him. Not obvious, but pay careful attention and you may realise what is going on before all is revealed at the end. Great acting! Gripping!
Dune: Part One (2021)
poor
Can't help but be reminded of Micheal Cimino's Heaven's Gate. An epic disaster! And Cimino never worked again. The absurdity of civilisation reaching such immense concentrations of power in the hands of a few reflects the ugliness of the civilised world we live in. In this, civilisation is reduced to vast brieze block architecture where every room is dark every vast hall is sombre and the landscape shrouded in clouds of dust, making the entire movie hardly visible. The storyline is boring and tiresome about some prince eventually winning a knife fight and finding himself on the side of the underdogs. Great! I feel sorry for all the great actors involved in this nonsense. Let's hope the nest episode is never made!
Blood & Water (2020)
Another teen school series about the problems of rich kids
Plenty of beautiful and handsome young people hanging out around swimming pools. Finally, according to Netflix, the identity, issues, disputes and loves of wealthy teens have been globalised, standardised and commodified. This is S. Africa, but you wouldn't know it. It could easily be the wealthy 'burbs of the US, Australia, India, Singapore, or Korea. Reality replaced by the synthetic.
The Chumscrubber (2005)
great satire of pretentious wealthy American suburbia
The previous review should be ignored!
This is a highly entertaining satire of wealthy American suburbia with its self -obsessed egotistical parents utterly failing their children and their absurdly pretentious relations with each other. Admittedly, I didn't know what to expect and initially it seemed slow paced, but ultimately very funny in a dry manner of satire, and very moving. Great stuff with outstanding actors clearly committed to this piece.
