Rock Hudson: Dark and Handsome Stranger (2010)
Don't Bother
Irrelevant abstract cuts. Incessant film clips. Boring interviews with friends. Nothing new here and almost nothing about his childhood. Should have been called everything you already knew about Rock and absolutely didn't care about. The cuts to his films throughout this documentary are constantly annoying.
The Curse of Oak Island (2014)
SMOKE AND MIRRORS
Since the inception of History Channel this show is the biggest fraud ever foisted on the viewing public. Shame on you.
Sphere (1998)
Mediocre Sci-Fi Flick
How to spend a lot of money and and end up with little to shw for it. Alien it ain't!
The Dog (2013)
Fascinatingly Perverse
Like looking at a car wreck or circus freak. The protagonist John W. Is narcissistic, delusional and believes he is a cult/folk hero. The narrative is he robbed a bank and held the employees hostage to pay for his lovers sex change. The hostage aspect of his crime is reduced to insignificance while seemingly attempting to justify his actions as a result of the prevailing prejudice against homosexuals at that time. Listening to John talk about his actions and life make you realize how far fetched Al Pacino's character is from the actual person.
Troll 2 (1990)
Amazing!
Probably the greatest movie ever made. Up their with Citizen Kane and Gone With The Wind.
The Hot Rock (1972)
Has not improved with age.
Almost funny movie that never quite gets there. Redford and Segal are not Butch and Sundance that's for sure. As a matter of fact it seemed like they didn't want to be in the move or working with each other. The dialogue is stilted and the humorous banter lame. Zero Mostel is the highlight as a crooked lawyer. Moses Gunn puts in a fine performance as the pennypinching diplomat who hires this misbegotten crew to recover a national treasure but one wonders if his disdain is for them or the movie. A nice tour of seventies New York City though.
Murder by Contract (1958)
Surprising
Really interesting character and acting performance by Vince Edwards. Never saw this one before and was impressed. Although a drama about a contract killer there are actually some comical exchanges between Vince's complex character and his cohorts as they try to figure out what makes him tick. Interestingly the musical score reminds me of Italian movies. I recommend.
The Incident (1967)
Really?
First time seeing. Unwatchable. Ridiculous. Comical. Dated. The only redeeming quality is the cast.
Banged Up Abroad: Fast, Furious & Busted (2013)
Huh?
What were they thinking? A car thief in Washington? They must be running out of repentant drug smugglers. This episode flat out SUCKED!
Bugsy (1991)
Entertaining and Comical
If your'e looking for a factual depiction of the actual gangster, forget it. Anyone who reads the true accounts of Mr. Siegel's exploits will see little resemblance to the character portrayed by Beatty. Entertaining yes. Accurate no. Yes Beatty does engage in violent outbursts but his character evolves into a parody. Luciano's character is completely unbelievable when compared to the actual first true godfather. I doubt Siegal ever took such liberties with the man who is credited with organizing the mob. Benning is actually quite good but cuckolds Siegal completely. I don't know hat the real Ben Siegal was like but he certainly wasn't this Hollywood version of him. There is more comedy than drama in this film.
Cries from Syria (2017)
Everyone should see this documentary
If you are asking why America should take in refugees from Syria, this documentary will answer your question by giving you a better understanding of the hell that these people are going through because of a genocidal maniac Bashar Assad who not only is being propped up by Putin but who assists him in the mass murder of innocent civilians to the point of intentionally bombing hospitals under the guise of fighting terrorism. The grievous toll on the children is both heartbreaking and horrifying. This should be required viewing by a certain president whose name I shall not mention but who has made a point of vilifying immigrants by fear mongering. As for Assad there is no hell sufficient to punish him
The Young Pope (2016)
The Sopranos of the Vatican
Jude Law is mesmerizing as the young American pope looking to radically change the Vatican and Catholic religion. A surreal, intense, beautifully cinematic production with intrigue and suspense. The character of the pope is that of a cult leader. Unpredictable, unyielding, intolerant of flaws bordering on sadistic demanding total subservience from his followers. Despite telling everyone how god speaks through him, in rare confidence he has no reluctance expressing doubt about the creator. He carries with him deep emotional trauma from his childhood which floats over his head like the sword of Damocles. Yet this is a complex man. As merciless as he is with his cardinals he displays a Christ-like understanding and compassion for others. The surrounding cast is made up of a plethora of very fine actors. Silvio Orlando as Cardinal Voiello his adjutant is a perfect foil. Diane Keaton as Sister Mary gives her usual fine performance trying to be a stabilizing influence on the pope. James Cromwell as the cardinal who was passed over for pope gives an excellent performance.
Meru (2015)
Should be called Jackass Mountain Climbers
This documentary seemed to me to be about totally selfish immature grown men apparently trying to kill themselves with no regard for their families, loved ones and the emergency resources that are squandered trying to save their lives. These guys did not seem like professionals.I respect the skill, courage and endurance involved in mountain climbing but in this case the people involved came across as totally reckless and amateurish with no regard for the gift of life.I did not feel admiration or respect for these people.Their obsession to conquer Meru came across more as a sickness. Were their lives that empty that they had this desperate need for attention? The movie's one saving grace is that the scenery is spectacular.
