Yintah (2024)
Heartbreaking
This documentary broke my heart. Seeing the force that a corporation has to destroy land without any regard of the people who live there has changed my way of thinking.
This is a powerful documentary that is happening in real time. It is important to educate the world about how the land provides for us. An Elder said in the documentary that we do not own the land - we BELONG to the land and we are apart of it. That resonates within my soul. True words were spoken here.
All of the true history and land is being erased. The people who had any part of removing and arresting the ingenious people from their land should be ashamed. Karma will greet you in the end.
Greed and power is ruining this world and at the end of the day, WE ALL LOSE.
Monsters (2022)
Ryan Murphy Dirty Pleasure
Ryan Murphy has been profiting off of real murder stories and twisting them around to sexualize/exaggerate the killers and romanticize the murders.
He never stays true to the real stories but likes to sprinkle bits of facts and fiction together. These were real people this happen to. Imagine having someone you know murdered and then the criminals and murders are glorified on TV. I have now seen two shows where the murder scene is shown over and over again to explain to the viewer the "different possibilities". You are murdering these people over and over for entertainment and money.
How have we allowed this to happen? Real life is not there for your entertainment so you can twist it into a new story which completely dismisses and dilutes the real issues.
If I had known beforehand that this was a Ryan Murphy series, I would have never watched it. I felt upset watching it because I know the real stories and he just tainted it. So anyone who watches this first without knowing/wanting to know the real story obviously has no sympathy for those who were in a tragic situation.
Please stop promoting this man. Go watch a documentary instead cause they actually gather more facts and show the evidence of court cases.
Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE (2024)
Nightmare Academy
I went into this show not having any knowledge of what it was about. I just randomly put it on thinking I wouldn't pay attention. I was wrong.
The show started off hopeful and warming. It seemed like everyone really cared for the girls and you could tell that the girls had a great bond. They worked really hard and the teachers tried to give them their best advice. I loved this concept. But then I thought...what's the catch?
Then the true nature of the show was revealed with...(Spoilers)...the girls had no idea they were in a survival show. THEN they lied to the girls to get information from them and turn them against each other for ratings. The producer even came on to admit to this. The way they treated those girls once the competition started was ruthless. Luckily one girl had the intelligence to just leave on her own. I wish they would have all left tbh.
Manon is a plant or someone is sponsoring her. She had all the best outfits and stages. And she was always the lead. Why? She missed so many practices and gets to stay home but somehow gets a spot in the group that belonged to another girl who worked 10 times harder from day 1.
There are many other concerning things about the show that makes me wonder how no one sued them yet or was even able to be released on Netflix. I thought the show came out 15 years ago cause of how crappy the producers are but it seems like we still haven't moved on from horrible shows like Making the Band.
I loved all the girls...not so much Manon...cause they were so dedicated, supportive and kind. I would watch a show about these girls helping each other achieve their dreams. No forced drama needed.
The Tetris Murders (2022)
Actually pretty interesting
The show has some good moments and quite frankly, I enjoyed it. There is clearly a cover up and it was done so well that we will never know the whole truth. The manner of the deaths are suspicious and the FBI involvement is odd.
When you have seen as many crime documentaries as I have, it's easy to pick out the ones that are basing things off of ideas rather than true evidence.
Really shocked at the low rating for this. Not really sure what the other reviewer, daniel-backstorm, problem is. I wish they would list all the lies that they supposedly claim. Give it a watch and do your own research. You cannot rely on others to speak the truth.
I give it a 9 because I don't think the third episode was necessary. You would be fine just watching the first two episodes and getting everything you need.
The Devil on Trial (2023)
No Real Evidence
I was very interested in watching this movie being spooky season. I wanted to watch a scary documentary with a completely different choice in mind until I saw The Devil on Trial first thing on Netflix. I should have picked the other movie.
They claim to have all this evidence in the beginning but when it comes to the moments to show that evidence, we are given a reinactment instead. The kid who was possessed now has his time to tell his side of the story ..and we barely hear the actual story from him. If they had just shown the audio of the really juicy stuff, it would have been a better movie. I didn't feel convinced that these things were related to possession and seemed more like a scam.
The movie felt disorganized in trying to not be bias? I personally didn't like the editing style and I'm not really sure what the goal was at the end of this film, but I just didn't feel satisfied.
Jimmy Savile: A British Horror Story (2022)
Not What I Expected
They really hyped this up. I started dosing off within the first episode and by the end I felt disappointed. The viewers mostly learn about who Savile is and how he rose to fame but no deep dive into his crimes. There wasn't a big focus on the victims and their stories and there was a lack of evidence proving these crimes. I had more questions than answers at the end and I just wish the story was told better.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Would have been better if it wasn't a sequel.
I would have given this film a 6 if it was a story that stood on it's own. Instead, it's a remake that's considered a sequel with the same exact name (but no good qualities) as the original film in 1974. Have we really gotten to a point that we can't come up with original sequel names so we can differentiate which movie is which?
Anywho, the movie felt like a gorefest with overly ridiculous kills. The acting was alright, I only liked one actor and he didn't last long so I was bored after that. Cinematography looks great of course. I do really wish they stuck to a similar story of leatherface so that the connection to the original made better sense.
So if you're not a fan of older horror films but a fan of of insane gore, you might just like this movie. As for me, I will never watch this movie again.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
Only Need To Watch Once
I had been waiting for A Quiet Place Part II ever since it was announced. I became more excited knowing that Cillian Murphy would be included. Unfortunately it did not amount to what I had hoped for, and maybe that's why I did not enjoy it as much.
The begining of the movie felt like it didn't need to be included considering what we already know from the first film. The middle part of the movie does grab your attention but leaves the ending feeling a bit dull and repetitive.
The progression of the story felt forced and a lot of things seemed pointless. I can't say I would want to watch this again. Although I beleieve the the first one was really hyped up, it was still better than the sequel. Not a terrible movie but it could have been better.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
It's okay.
I was actually very excited when I saw that there was a new version on Netflix of Sabrina the Teenage Witch. I grew up watching the sitcom version and loved it. I was really into this new idea of making Sabrina darker and much more serious.
Within the first episode, I was a bit bored by it. But I figured it might be a slow start off and will get better as it goes on. To my surprise, it just kind of stayed the same.
The more I got to know the characters, the less I liked them. Sabrina seemed too bland and calm about everything. Harvey was too nice and perfect that it just made him uninteresting. Sabrina's friends and foes in her high school were too over the top, there was never a middle ground for them. Some of the witches were okay, Prudence was a good character. In fact, there really wasn't any character that I could call my favorite, except maybe for Salem, and he didn't even speak a word.
Although the characters were no help to make this enjoyable, I did like the cinematography and feel of the show. The music was good as well. My only complaint about part of the story telling is the weird glossy look they do on scenes whenever they are in the witches realm/presence. It made me feel like my glasses were smudged with oil.
And like some other reviewers have stated, I wasn't into the underlying strong feminist message. It just didn't do anything for me. Parts of the story seemed too forced to make things dramatic and as it gets to the end, sooo many things have happened.
I can see why some people would like this show, it's not absolutely terrible. But all in all, I think it's an okay watch. I'm hoping the second season does a lot better.
Soupçons (2004)
Biased and mostly boring
I'm actually surprised how high of a rating this series received. The series could of been so much shorter and instead it dragged on for 13 episodes. I found myself often bored with it as they would go into life at home with Michael Peterson, it actually made me dislike him more instead of sympathizing with him.
The show is completely biased and keeps out a lot of the evidence presented by the prosecutors. There's no room for making your own judgments on the case because they simply want you to recognize that Michael Peterson is a good man who was wronged by the justice system.
There were a lot of important things that they kept out and went on to make everyone else against the defense team to be the villains of the story. About half way through I started to feel like either people were paid by Michael Peterson to make a documentary to shed good light on him or that he personally knew someone working on this film to shed the good light.
As I came to find out that one of the editors had a relationship with Michael Peterson, it all made sense to me and the whole series just seemed pointless. In the trivia it says that the editor was not influenced by her relationship with Peterson, but I find that hard to believe when the movie drags on with so many scenes of him talking nonsense and no justice to Kathleen, the wife he loved so dearly. Oddly enough, she is not mentioned very much by the family throughout the series. The documentary is nothing for Kathleen's justice but just to persuade you that Peterson is innocent and a good man.
I truly wanted to like it because I found it interesting that it followed the whole trial from the very beginning but it was completely biased and had too many unnecessary scenes that left me bored with the whole series. I actually skipped towards the end just to see what happened.
Ludo (2015)
I like it but I don't like it
I personally love watching horror movies of all types, especially if they are foreign movies. With that being said, I don't think Ludo is a film for everyone. I thought this movie was going to be about zombies when I quickly skimmed through the summary and all I could remember was "shopping mall" and "gruesome".
The film starts off with a couple of teenagers trying to get laid. They wound up in a shopping mall when they couldn't find a hotel room for the night. As the couples' begin to get into the good stuff, an old man and woman come out of no where. They get the teens to play an evil board game with them. That's when things get really crazy. I'm not going to say what exactly happens but that the film goes into more depth of the origins of the evil board game.
OK, so the concept of the film was interesting and the acting wasn't too bad. There were some scenes that I thought were pretty cool/creepy. The story started off pretty simple and then it just felt like it was trying to do TOO much. As the movie progresses, it focuses entirely on the evil game that I just kind of forgot about the teens. The special effects were pretty good in my opinion but it was also too much for me.
Overall I enjoyed it as a late night horror movie to watch but I'd only watch it once. The story could have been so much better. It's a different feel of horror and that's what I liked about it. So in the end...I like it and I don't like it.
3% (2016)
No expectations
As I'm scrolling around through Netflix trying to find something to watch I come across 3%. I think to myself 'Hm, that's an interesting title' and without hesitation I clicked on the link.
I really had no expectations and didn't even bother reading the plot. Immediately the cinematography caught my attention. The show had a unique style with the camera angles, lighting and theme.
I particularly like movies/shows with actors I don't recognize because I feel the character is more real for me. I liked how every character was different and each had their own story. The script was well written and I focused a lot on that because it is subtitles for this show (unless you know what they are saying, cause I sure as hell didn't).
There were a couple things here and there that I didn't like. For example, The acting can be a little dull at times. I didn't like the romance between two characters because it was hard to believe they were really in love. The show wasn't perfection and the overall look might not be for everyone. The story is what really kept me into the show and I was hyped up for the last episode. The ending was amazing and I hope the story continues on for a second season.
The Shrine (2010)
Took me three times to watch this...
The first time I put this movie on, I watched about 15 minutes into the film and turned it off. The acting was bad and I just felt like it was going to be a bad movie. Second time I put it on, turned it off within 10 minutes. I thought the second time around wouldn't be so bad. I didn't want to have this movie not watched all the way through so I gave it one more try and this time I skipped about 30 minutes into the film. And boy, am I glad I did!
I was honestly surprised to have like the movie so much especially because I was so turned off by the beginning of the film. I was really captivated by the first eerie scene of the movie. It had me a little creeped out and I found it to be something pretty original.
Guarantee, the characters make some stupid decisions but I'm used to seeing that in a lot of horror movies. But the acting isn't too bad as the movie carries on. It definitely was a unique film and I loved how the ending was unexpected. Most movies I watched these days, I can almost predict the direction it's going to take but not with The Shrine!
I really loved this and actually watched it about 2 more times afterwards. Just stick out the beginning, the rest of the movie makes up for that. I don't think this is a movie is something that everyone would enjoy, but if you're looking for something different with fresh new concepts, give it a watch.
