Pride (2021)
Subjective Look Back
Watching this documentary series the viewer might think gay men were a tiny minority who did nothing for the gay rights movement, and trans people formed the majority. What a slap in the face to all the gay men who risked everything at a time when they could have been arrested and lost their careers for just being gay, or worse, beaten up or killed. What was interesting was that in spite of being heavy on exaggerating the importance of trans women of colour in the history of gay rights, the inclusion of archival footage made it clear that the narrative was pure fiction because all the footage clearly showed that it was mainly gay, lesbian and bi people who did the heavy lifting.
The Great (2020)
Where is the humour?
It's a sad reflection on society that most reviewers like this show. I didn't expect historical accuracy from a satire but I did expect it to be funny (eg in the manner of Blackadder). It wasn't. In fact, the script might as well have been written by adolescent school boys who have just discovered swearing and don't need anything more than the F or C bombs, or allusions to sex, to make them roll around on the floor with laughter.
HHhH (2017)
Visually Stunning but Hollow Film
The cinematography and music were excellent, as were some of the performances, but in the end, this film was clinical, hollow and peppered with unnecessary scenes that contributed nothing to the overall story.
I won't go into the plot but the way the script was written, I didn't feel anything for any of the characters and there were so many holes in the story, I had to read about the real life people and events to make sense of it, so I did learn something about this era in history, but not from the movie itself.
Top of the Lake (2013)
An absolute joke
I won't repeat the pertinent points already raised by other reviewers who hated Top of the Lake China Girl, but I want to add something I haven't seen anyone else mention, and that is that Puss/Alexander was just an amalgamation of G.J. and Matt from season one. This to me summarises how unimaginative and unoriginal the writing in China Girl was.
Saint Laurent (2014)
Yawn
This was one of the most boring films I've ever seen, and that's coming from someone who is interested in haute couture and Yves Saint Laurent. Slow paced would be an understatement: it moved at snail's pace and created the impression that Yves led one of the dullest lives in the history of man.
Most reviewers rate this biopic as being superior to the other one released in the same year, titled Yves Saint Laurent (which was endorsed by Pierre Berge with access to the YSL archives). However, while I wasn't enamoured of this latter version (it too was on the boring side), the characters were more fleshed out and believable, and more of the important people in YSL's life were included in that picture than this one.
The three stars I gave this movie were all for Helmut Berger as the ageing Yves Saint Laurent. Having seen footage of YSL in the later stages of his life, Helmut's portrayal was eerily accurate.
