P'tit Quinquin (2014)
Drying paint would be more entertaining.
With an interesting premise... outstanding scenery....a great unknown ensemble cast.... a quirky almost perverse lead, this had soooo much potential to be entertaining. But NO... simply a waste of 3 1/2 hours as time after time a thread begins... a thought line is shared with premise and it is all for naught. Watched every minute. Gave it every chance to entertain and yet.... it fails on soooo many levels I was too stunned to even be angry that I hadn't quit in the first hour and a half. The esoteric hokum reviews written by supposed elitists who think there are messages here simply missed the joke. NOT trying to be mean....it was just THAT bad.
The Equalizer (2014)
A waste of screen talent....
Expecting a literate interpretation of the oh-so famous (iconic?) Edward Woodward "Equalizer" this was a total disgrace to that theme and title. Woodwards Equalizer was understated, intelligent, well acted, complex in character and storyline and thus engrossing and entertaining. This thin poorly written 'shot-em up' show case for Denzel is a pointless showcase for his depth or even his screen charisma. (Surely he didn't read this before he signed in??) The story is so flawed it reeks of 'somebody didn't attend the read thru' of this screen play...without spoiling.... just watch for the huge disconnects in time-line AND locations once the so called 'action' begins.(And THAT to take forever given the vapidness of this over-used dialogue). The music simply drowns this film in some supposed 'dark power vibe' that never matches the scene or the transitions particularly. The 'drone' even over rides some key Denzel dialogue (and our new theater is DHL certified so was not the sound system). It didn't 'fit'... didn't add and certainly was annoying at best. Denzel has a few charming moments.... but as a menace??/ never.... neither the scenes nor dialogue supported that. NOT a salute to the classy, involved , intelligent, entertaining "Equalizer" Woodward immortalized....and really painful watching Denzel trying to make something out of this boring story. First neg post I've written in years.... but.... wow. Pass on this one.
Grand Piano (2013)
Well worth the viewing...
You'd have to be a cretin not to appreciate the virtuosity of the performances in this movie.... the music being superb and each acted part being dead on except the cranky friend of the wife who was just a bit over the top. Elsewise... what was not to like? Eliza certainly makes an interesting character like this so much more memorable.... a unique actor indeed. The suspense of wondering if the 'inner' voice was an alter ego... a breakdown in progress... or indeed a person seeking ill gotten gain at the star's expense was pretty tense. Not a 10... or even a nine as production quality was somewhat lacking....but entertaining as almost all of Eliza's unique roles seem to be. Bravo!!
