Doghouse (2009)
A bit of harmless fun
It's a bit strong and the blokes aren't great but they're real. I don't get why so many people didn't like this. I'm a woman and I thought it was really funny. I loved all the daft things like the toyshop, and the water pistols. Danny Dyer when he's trying to get out of a situation, and keeps retching is hilarious. Danny is naturally funny and a much better actor than people give him credit for. For example Closure is brilliant, Trench, Football Factory and the Mean Machine are pretty damned good. Because he's honest about who he is some people are offended by him and some of the other actors in the this film but I love them all, and this was a bit of stupid fun. The only complaint I have is they didn't make the best use of some of the superb actors in it, but that's it. If you like a bit of daft zombie/man V woman/dog soldiers Shaun of the Dead type film you're in for a treat.
Ex Machina (2014)
SciFi at its finest
I've just seen this on C4 the network premier. I have wanted to see it for ages, but as you know life moves on and you forget. I remember thinking how much it interested me because I did foundation art about cyborgs and sentient beings when I went to college in the late 1980s. I passed with flying colours as I based it on things like Aliens, and Terminator, and my fave film of all time Robocop the original. I built a suit out of things like an old betamax video and some WW2 radio bits and goggles. Then I sprayed the background with graffiti. So I passed. So I've always loved special effects, and the likes of Stan Winston Ray Harryhausen my favourite, Rob Botin. So when I saw how breathtakingly good the effects were in this movie I was pleased I was finally going to see it. Breathtaking is one way to look at it. The film was a modern day Frankenstein I'd say. Horrible genius creates. No I won't ruin it for you.Suffice to say the plot superb the acting flawless. Nothing not to like really. I don't want to ruin it with plot spoilers I just want to praise it as Fatboy slim says. So watch it. I've lost the will to write this as there's hundreds of reviews. But I must say give it a go. Amazing and now in my top ten Scifi films, with the likes of Terminator, Aliens, Robocop, Star wars originals and so on.
Ender's Game (2013)
Fantastic Sci Fi
I hadn't seen this before and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. I'd sort of read the book a long time ago, and the film was well done. I caught it before I watch ex-machina tonight so was in a Sci Fi mood to be fair but for a film about teenagers it was very good. I sometimes turn from films like this because the teenagers annoy me (I've been one myself!) and I guess sometimes they irritate because they remind me of me. Besides all that the graphics for the games are beautifully done, the music good, the pace of the plot fast enough to keep you interested. I had worked out what was going to happen and couldn't remember if it was from the book or I'd worked it out myself. Probably both. Well it's a great story and beautifully crafted film. It's different, too. I grew up watching films like War games which I love too. If you have a bit of time to spare, love sci-fi and want something a bit different from star wars watch this.
Reflections (2008)
A treat for the morning
Since Movie Mix has been taken over by Sony it's had some little gems on in the mornings. Called thrilling mornings it's been a lot better. I'm a fan of a lot of films because I always think of the sheer hard work to make a movie. Anyway this film is a pretty good film. You can see the level of acting and sets the filmography all of it's good. I think assessing it as a longer version of Law and Order is a bit mean to both Reflections and Law and Order. So this is a little gem. Good plot interesting culture shock as it's set in Spain. How outrageous is that? No I think it being out of the usual Quantico USA setting helps it. Timothy Hutton is good as the tired out FBI officer All supporting Spanish actors have lots to offer. It's really well done. It keeps you guessing how it's going to play out and has a few surprises along the way. Keep it up Sony Movie Channel. For free view you're pretty good and now you've upped the ante let's hope others follow suit. I love a good black and white movie but movies for men should actually put some classics on not weird Ed Wood type films made on a budget of three pence! There is a place for them just not for 24 bloody hours on a constant loop.
A Dark Plan (2012)
Excellent film
I am not happy with the review that slags off Lifetime movies. I love Canadian film, it has a fresh perspective the actors are accomplished and you can always tell that it's Canadian opposed to American. I think it's a bit of an exaggeration to say that they only produce a film of this caliber every 3 to 4 years. Have you any idea how hard it is to compete in the World market I love Canadian film and I'm from the UK. I love all film that has tried and overcome. I mean if you want to talk boring films how about Chocolat snooze AI that's right up there in my top ten of awful films. Look at the budget in AI it wasn't Speilbergs nor was it Kubricks. It was so bloody boring, when David waits under the sea for 300 years or whatever it felt that long. So when you're badmouthing a limited budget Canadian film have a think about how hard they work and how much entertainment they bring for a fraction of the cost. I just think it's wrong to slag off a whole company who can't be that bad or they wouldn't still be producing films. Everyone is entitled to their opinion that's yours this is mine. Back to the film Dark Desire. It's entertaining and a lot sinister and very strange too. Great work guys keep it up.It is stylish lovely looking bad guy, always a plus and I won't spoil it watch it and see. It was on Channel 5 this afternoon 1st September 2015.
After All These Years (2013)
Wonderful is all I can say
I thought oh here we go another weepy. I couldn't be more pleasantly surprised. It is hilarious and has a great plot. I did figure it out but not until near the end. It was complex enough to keep you interested, and they didn't treat us as stupid, it wasn't made easy for the audience which is really refreshing. You had to listen to get the twists and turns and Wendie Malick could not have been cast more perfectly. I loved her in Frasier and she looks younger now! I think this is worth a watch whether it's on UK Channel 5 or Hallmark or if you hire it. It's a cracking film and a pleasurable way to spend an evening or afternoon. Keep up the great work in producing the best TV movies ever Scott Smith you are the king.
Murder on the 13th Floor (2012)
Leave this film alone it tried hard and nearly succeeded
I liked this film, it was a little slow and thought that all the actors did a good job. It annoys me so much when someone won't come out and say what needs to be said, but then there wouldn't be much suspense if they did!! Seriously I'm digressing, it does have black humour it's okay for both sexes and the bad guys are vicious comedy relief. I think some of it wasted on the technology, after all there are houses and so on like this now and most of us are savvy enough to know what it all means. Decent plot good acting, bit of fun don't take it so seriously and enjoy it in bed with some ice cream and partner or mates on a lazy afternoon.
Missing at 17 (2013)
Annoying at 17
I have been both 17 and the mother of birth and adopted children. I find this girl annoying and her mum a bit too much too at times, but she loves her as much as her own. At 17 really is incredibly selfish, narcissistic like a lot of us at that age, but so unaware of others feelings it's incredible. The way she falls into the criminals clutches is laughable. If she's so sophisticated to have sex straight away why is she immature? She says I don't owe these people anything, talking about her adoptive parents. MY GOD how about 17 years of love hard work, and provision. She is a spoiled brat who needs a good kick up the bottom to sort her out. Oh Blah blah there are starving kids in our countries, who get neglected and abused and she has it all, and is so "confused", when there are people all over the world who would kill to be in her shoes. GOD give me strength. Anyway that's a GOOD thing as the films well done and provokes emotions so it's done it's job, and well done beautifully filmed and thought provoking. I'm an artist so if you get a reaction you've done your job. I still want to slap her around the face and tell her to either grow up or go away.
Time of Death (2013)
Great movie perfect for day in bed
This is a great film, I can't get over how many good films I'm getting to see the afternoon by channel 5 uk. They may call them B movies and STVs but they are far better than that. This one is excellent, great story gorgeous actors, shot really well, great background music. Plus good love story too. It's got it all, give it a go. It doesn't pretend to be CSI like a lot of films these days. I figured it out but hey that's half the fun. Enjoy this it's a good one. I am curious how these films get neglected and don't' run on prime time on our TV maybe they do in the States. It makes no sense. Maybe the Hollywood players have all the power and control the A lists, well it's about time they realised that the likes of this film are just as good if not better than some of the rubbish they throw millions of dollars at. Hey here's an idea how about making all the Hollywood lot take a pay cut, and Uk footballers, then you'd get really good people doing it for the love of it.
Out of the Woods (2005)
Jolly good fun
I'd say this film started off a little predictable, but then what isn't if you've watched as many films as we all have. But it's far from predictable as it gets going. The premise may be but I love the way it diversifies with the Native Americans stealing the show as well as Ed Asner. I have a question for my fellow film buffs, has anyone noticed that Ed Asner is the absolute double of the strawberry smelling bear Lotso in Toy Story 3? He just reminds me of him. It's very weird.I digress. The film rocks, it's good fun, has a great moral message, shows Native Americans in a great way, and has a happy ending. Any film that says screw greedy yuppies no matter what decade is good for me. I lived through the 80s as a teen. Horrible time, especially in UK and USA. But by GOD the music. Anyway great film watch it.
Goodnight for Justice (2011)
Brilliant
I cannot be more surprised at how good the Judge John Goodnight films are. Every one is a fabulous surprise at how well they are done and how absorbed I got in the film. I'm not a fan of Westerns to be honest, apart from the Good the Bad and the Ugly that type of thing as every movie buff knows they are essential viewing. For a start I love the fact that Luke Perry shows no vanity whatsover being true to his character plus the hats (they used to wear bowlers more than stetsons!) little things like that are accurate and you get a sense of how tough it was to live in these days, going from town to town sleeping rough, the whole thing is engrossing. I still have one to look forward the third one which if it's as good as the first two I'm in for a treat. I think these film are wasted on UK Channel 5 in the afternoon, they'd hold up well at night as well and I for one would get the popcorn and pop in and look forward to seeing it with friends in the evening. Great stuff from 902 blahblah boys, they should be proud, and Luke your scruffy beard and laugh lines make you sexy as hell compared to Hollywoods swollen faced stars. Has anyone else notice Nick Cage lately. All of them who have 'work' done look like their faces are too big for their heads. Very strange enjoy your wrinkles, laugh lines, marks of honour and of living instead of botoxing the crap out of it. I know what I find sexy and it ain't fish lips Mickey it's ain't fish lips.
RoboCop (2014)
If you like the original don't associate it with this movie.
Robocop?!?! What the hell did that have to do with the original? Robocop is my favourite film in my top ten of all time. The remake had nothing to do with it at all, it was sleek aimed at kids like the disgraceful Robocop3. The first was a brilliant take on the ferocious greed of the 80s satirical shocking and brutally honest. Violent to the point of making me sick and I was shocked at the way they killed Alex Murphy taking off his hand and enjoying it, and laughing. That's the bit that stuck with me. The new one is a polished repackaged don't open the packet toy, compared to the battered millennium falcon you played with as a child. (Yeah some of us girls liked star wars too). Favourite is NOT a spelling mistake it's the English way of spelling it.
Assumed Killer (2013)
Well worth a watch.
As I said on my time line this is well worth a watch. It has something extra than the usual TV movie and is worth a 9 o'clock slot on Channel 5 USA or UK. It is the type of film that suits a sickie or a day off, and some tea and a cake, feet up and watch this. It has twists and turns and as the previous reviewer said it's not predictable. It is the type of little gem you add to your collection if you need something to amuse you in the future or to show to a couple of friends who are round for a film and a pizza. Great stuff it may have been made for TV but it's better than some of the disappointments I've been to see at the cinema this past year.
The Doctor Blake Mysteries: Brotherly Love (2013)
The best fictional Character for years.
I love this series. It has been on BBC1 in the afternoons, totally wasted there as is moving on. I can't get over how Craig from neighbours has grown up. SO handsome and such a good actor now. I remember him as he was like a bouncing labrador puppy when he was younger. So full of fun and he was good at playing guitar the only thing let him down was his Scouse Perm, which we've all had or loved someone who had one!! Seriously it's so well done so forward thinking. His character is always in trouble as he has strong and modern opinions and ideas and in those stoical times you were very brave to have them. I know i'ts fiction in a way but some of the attitudes that people had and even had, unfortunately are very real. I think they are very brave the writers and have handled racism, sexism and lots of other isms extremely well, exploring and showing just how bad it was in the fifties in Australia as well as the rest of the world. They also prove that they are educated clever people with a stylish culture not some aussies in the outback.
I love the music, the artwork on the titles is amazing. Well done you Aussies, you make some amazing films and T.V now and it's about time you received some of the accolades you're due. Seriously great series completely different from other amateur sleuths, it has a raw and realistic quality that puts it ahead of the rest. My only complaint is that they have only shown ten in total and long may it continue if the networks don't pick this up then they're idiots. Here's to Craig as the lead and all the supporting actors who all have great parts and are equal in their excellence. Suzy
