Mr Bates vs. The Post Office (2024)
A story that needed telling (and will happen again)
I have followed the Horizon scandal for about 7 years.
Proof, if needed, that big organisations only work for the people at the top, not the staff or customers.
Sad that it took this excellent series to bring it to the public view, and worse that politicians are scrambling over themselves to make capital from innocent peoples misery and stress.
The performances are outstanding (Toby Jones captures regular people to a t, just like in Marvellous )
It should sweep the board at the awards next year.
And hopefully it will sweep out a few people whose semi criminal behaviour enabled the scenario.
But the cynic in me says it will, no doubt, happen again...
Parks and Recreation: Harvest Festival (2011)
I want to be cursed by an Native American chief
I'm a late comer to this show, but it is consistently brilliant.
The one scene, involving an Indian curse reimagined on the local TV station, in here topped the lot though.
I could not move for a good ten minutes through laughter.
Mulan (2020)
Pretty flat
Considering this was a big budget movie, it was two hours of disappointment.
Uninspired script, and special effects, and incidental music that was like one of the pianists in a silent movie.
If you are looking for an easy watch it's OK, but don't get too excited
Doctor Who: Blink (2007)
I just rewatched this, and it's still amazing.
Having seen this first time about 12 years back, I thought I would see it again.
Truly the essence of Doctor Who.
A stunningly clever plot, and genuinely frightening baddies, which make you question things in your own environment.
Enjoy
Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Cave of Two Lovers (2006)
Very funny episode
I love this series, and this one takes the humour to a new levels.
Very very clever
Rocketman (2019)
A proper roller coaster ride
When your life has been as tipsy turvey as Elton's, you would expect a mad film.
It just stays this side of fantasy, then pulls you back to reality brilliantly.
Taron gets the singer perfectly, but Jamie Bell as Bernie provides an excellent understated foil in the background.
It probably doesn't show ALL the warts, but considering Elton was heavily involved in production, it's pretty frank, especially about his relationships with his parents.
Definitely worth two hours of your time.
The Last Dance (2020)
Storytelling at its finest
I have never seen a basketball game in my life.
But this is about the people.
It also avoids complete demonisation, or deifying anyone, which is a refreshing change.
Prepare to be absorbed.
Nativity Rocks! (2018)
The dog was the best actor
Which figures, as the film is a dogs dinner.
Glad I only paid for it a r kids club
Odd Squad (2014)
If your kids struggle with maths, watch this.
Terrific show
Great characters, good scripts (with cracking jokes) and it gets the maths lessons in without distracting from the entertainment.
And it's not trying to get your kids to buy rubbish merchandise, so all good there.
