Gattaca (1997)
what is being unique?
From time to time I watch some movies just like gattaca. Everytime I watch I either refresh my memory or find something revealing. I call those movies puzzles. I do not think gattaca could be compared to blade runner.I wanted to say because I read some of the reviews.Could not be compared because both tells different spectrum of the future, gattaca is more like bound to history, many references to history or the time present now, blade runner is totally future and its world is completely different. I checked wikipedia and wikipedia says Vincent saves Anton on the last race by following celestial map while swimming back on their backs.I always think Vincent lures Anton to murder and Anton dies.Because after that scene I do not see any sign as to Anton is alive. I always remember the scene while Vincent look at the start and swim back and dead Anton is in his arms.I take this ill sacrifice of Vincent, because Vincent passes the road, it is more like suicide and of course Jerome.Everything happens to Vincent is like that never stopping soundtrack.
Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989)
one key theory
Four persons life somehow interconnected even if 9 years already passed.Graham's one key theory tells his all misery which is similar to Ann's life.Johns backstabbing rage ends up with Graham's Elizabeth who is all about what happened Graham through all those years. John is a kind of key to connect all those 3 people to tell their story. Soderberg dives deep in humans nature when Cynthia tells her perverse thrill when she wants to sleep at her sisters bed and again John's guilty regret when he tells Graham he had an affair with Elizabeth that he would not know this much damage would do to him. Graham's one key theory is Ann's unhappy marriage, this key is literally a key that tell unhappy story of those people. And guilt.Even Ann has that guilt which is lightly covered with lies, even if those lines are told to yourself. Soderbergs movies have always a dark side to human nature which we see all day around and that weird guy in the bar makes those conversations which are not dull at all. Sex is chosen because I guess it is most controversial and repressed issue which makes it darker and needless to say makes part of human nature.By the way videotaping or just recording is something you should try, even with talking to yourself or to someone else.It is revolutionary.
Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (2017)
fighting society
You should look closely at their profile, their jobs especially. One is a doctor from the Harvard university which is called ivy league in the US I guess. The other two women, one is also from the Harvard and academic and other one is a student at the Harvard.I think this is important aside from their inventions which last decades because their fight against society and religion, which I gather from fascist/catholics discussion.I just find them brave and wonder whether they would imagine their lives would be told years later after their death today. The irony is what they invented or created touched other people even if they were punished by them as well. But they were punished for what they chose to do. What would happen if those people even did not exist and even if what they created or invented did not exist? Would people today lose anything in their lives? I admire this kind of people, state, society, religion, they do not give up and fight for what they believe. "Believe in something even if it means sacrificing everything"
Das weiße Band - Eine deutsche Kindergeschichte (2009)
violence produces violence
what is the mystery? doctor's accident, the murder(the woman in the sawmill),baron's tortured kid,the fire and the attacked disabled kid.In my opinion there's no mystery.Haneke shows us who do these sabotages or attacks over children lives.when you look at children' lives it is like they live in a military barracks.they are suppressed and punished. It is a village, kids are like robots.when they feel suppression and punishment they direct violence with violence.these sabotages are outcome of violence.violence is everywhere in the village.especially pastor's family is like a Nazi camp.tied children whipped children.what do you expect from these kids? pastor is an important figure.because religion is in this.this family is the heart of violence.this family spreads it over pastor because at the same time he teaches kids.and white ribbon is the Nazi band which is tied to arms.how pastor defines the function of white ribbon is important.it is like pastor defines the roots of violence.all the rituals kids face are militarist.discipline, the way they speak.everything is in place.except kids don't wear military uniform and Nazi band on their arms.I think Haneke presents us white ribbon as military uniform.
Los abrazos rotos (2009)
encounter of red and black
when it comes to Pedro Almodovar's cinema there's always an ocean of red and black combination.and of course Penelope Cruz beauty.as she ages it's like she gets more beautiful and dominates the silver screen.I find story telling a bit in a hurry. The crossings between events could be slower not sharp.there are some Hitchcockian moments like when two cars go one after another with headlights and the moment when Ernesto pushes Lena.director makes you feel like you are there among the characters but when director gets you out of there with scenes from above it's like you are dragged out of movie.towards the end plot gets unnecessarily complicated.do we really need to know that Mateo is Diego's true father? and when Mateo re-edits movie I expect a connection between movie's name, girls and suitcases, and the accident. It could be more Hitchcookian and exciting.
Riparo (2007)
great story
I think this is a nice gay movie as good as milk(2008).all three characters are needy people, have personel issues and are not happy.how they encounter is also very rare.anna thinks being nice is love.but not.anna can't get love from her family and tries to fill that gap with being nice to mara, anis or other people.she is lonely.mara is aware of evetyhing.she feels like anna's mistress.mara also can't get love from her family.after she loses her father she tries to fill that gap with sleeping with anis.maybe she thinks she has to be nice to anis.anna and mara characters are very similar.but what they share is not love.they try to escape their family and find each other.we don't know anything about anis family. In the end everything collapses around these three characters and they face their real life and stop pretending because they don't have much choice.
I like that chair very much :) is that real? I am a maria de medeiros fan btw.she's a perfect fit for her role. That gun pointing scene is exaggarated I guess.because nobody runs out with a gun when he sees his car being stolen.
I read a review from someone in amsterdam.that review is so unfair and harsh.before writing such a review you should have looked what rewards this movie got.
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
ugly face of the war
Clint Eastwood is a great man for cinema. It is an excellent idea to tell the story of a war from two different sides which are the sides of this war.He uses many ways to show us how ugly the face of the war is.That ugly face may force you to kill an innocent dog before the eyes of little children, that ugly face may force soldiers to kill surrendered enemy soldiers, and the worst the commander may force you to suicide with a grenade instead of fighting the enemy. This is a strong movie.I don't see any sign of heroism in the movie, but lots of drama and sad heartbreaking stories.I think Eastwood wants audience to notice the drama side of the war through the lives of individuals.I didn't watch American version yet.But Eastwood is very brave and honest to make such a movie.
The Burning Plain (2008)
drama in drama
a very strong story.at the beginning I think there's two separate story line.when Sylvia calls the lying man Santiago everything falls into its place. There is something I find not plausible.when Mariana lets pipe loose what does she think will happen? obviously it's gonna blow entire trailer.this aside, movie tells a woman's life who is gonna have to face his past which she tries to escape all her life.she kills her mother and her lover.she keeps this secret herself and tries to cope with this by sleeping every man she meets which is a way of hiding her guilt.she also tries to share this guilt by burning his hand with her mother's lover son.Just to make her history to present a sign of love.however it is in reality not a love, a guilt.she tries to hurt himself escaping being loved by a man.she can't bear this pain and leaves his baby with his father behind.she maybe treats her baby a product of this guilt.when she learns her daughter had a scar when she was 3 years old she later asks her forgiveness, feeling that guilt again.this movie is full of drama.it takes you from a woman's life who had breast cancer to another woman's life who had killed her own mother just to punish.Afterwards she tries to punish herself.movie ends without a resolution.I wonder whether she's gonna tell him how she killed her own mother and his father? the father of her daughter? even her daughter?
