MaXXXine (2024)
Oh Maxxxine!
This film has shades of a few 70's films, even though it takes place in 1985. Again attacking the role with Gusto, Goth, who I think would be pretty much like Maxxxine in real life, is the prey of a stalking/serial killer party who's murdering porno actresses, and Maxxxine could or not be, next on the list. Film feels pretty Once Upon A Time in Hollywoodish, or more Hillside Strangle-lish. What lets the film down heavily, was the last twenty minutes, as to the identity and motives of the killer, which I just found preposterous. The film is still darn entertaining and Goth's great bold performance, warrants screen viewing. Kevin Bacon is excellent, as a sleazy badgering pornographer, and there are some moments of shock gore, but this film comes up short, due to the ridiculousness in the last twenty minutes.
Die Watching (1993)
Watching Atkins, is a killer
What you'd expect if watching the trailer, or judging the cover. Voyeuristic nutter, and we find out a bit, how he ended up like this, through flashbacks, and flashes. Speaking of flashers, a few hotties, on the pretext, of becoming the next big thing, model wise, are lured by advertisement, to the strangling quarters of Atkin's warehouse/photography strudio. As getting them to strip and dance erotically, he then puts em' out, and ties and gags them, then, yes, you guessed it.... lets them watch themselves die. Interesting idea, and some nice blood splattering, some heart, and a not half bad Atkins, makes it a nice entertainer. Oh yeah, get this, after taping the victims, they make their way to an underground minority clientele of a video store, run by a perveted pig of a clerk, void of a conscious. Thomerson as a detective working the serial killer, is so type cast, I'm sure, he'd rather be somewhere else, as so is his partner. Can't shake off being a low brow film, due to it's content, simple story, and repellent themes. Just adds up to a below average drama/thriller, heralded by a sometimes farcical, overacting Atkins.
Terrifier 3 (2024)
The most disturbing first 10 minutes of a horror film you'll ever see
If Leone has set out to make a bloodier, more sickly gruesome, disgusting, third entry to scare and disturb the de-jesus out of ya, hes has successfully accomplished it, with this. I haven't truly been disturbed so much, as in the first 10 minutes of this gore feature, than say the Se7en gut wrenching twist ending. This one is intensely violent, which had me sighing "You gotta be kidding me?", where I WAS TRULY unsettled, and on verge of leaving.... but no, I stayed, as to see what else, was gonna visually challenge me. Anyone with heart issues, or disturb easily, THIS IS NO FOR YOU. Again, heavily referring to the intro, which has seen audience members leave or vomit. The Terrifier series, sets a higher standard of gore challenge for horror fans. Just how much can you take. Why it's the number one film internationally, is because of what we've read and heard. The worse we read, the more we want to go and see. As to the story, present day, again our serial killer clown Art, is celebrating Christmas his own way, again reunited with his killer clown sweetheart. The psychologically disturbed Sienna. Revisits her Auntie and family. With a fresh new spate of gruesome local murders, she's convinced the Terrifier is back and after her, and her nerdy brother who now lives on Campus. There are some truly nasty moments, especially the trademark opening involving child murder, and a very intense shower, pre chainsaw scene, one done in true bl**dy craftmanship. Story wise, it is confusing as to before and after story connection as remembering the brother and sister from the better No 2, which was more rich on characters, we really get to know, and I liked it did that. With this one, it's more back story to present day, with a little bit of ridiculousness near the end. In my view this film is very messy, and I'm not talking blood. It's in story following. This is a nasty film, you truly don't want to estimate, as in nasty blood factor, it's awesome end credit music score, which I really liked, kind of a relief, after it's 120 minute plus duration. The acting is really good, and does feature two known players, while our Terrifier actor, is at his bloody brilliant best, and a little humor, doesn't hurt here either. Watch at your own risk.
The Substance (2024)
Demi's back.
As I'm writing this review, still getting over the last half hour of this amazing film, this is one insane movie experience, you must experience. It could very well serve as a poster child for self image, and an anti pill taking movie. Fading, as now in her fifties, our fading star, a present Aerobics instructor with her own show, and a once great acting career, prefore I presume, as seen from a award accolade, sported near the start, which you can see in the trailer, Demi, isn't happy with the here and now of her life. Risking a mysterious, life changing green liquid solution, by use of injectile, which you should only use once, and would be mad to try she injects, where she experiences her once more beautiful 20 something self under a different name and look (the hot Qualley, stealing the scene in a strong tour de force performance), but after misusing, or being greedy, the consequences, sort of two way streak, Moore's old self, starts to rapidly disintegrate. Most of the gore in the film, comes really in the last half, and when it comes, it comes, the movie going off the charts in stupidity. It works because we don't expect it, and we are taken aback. We can forgive it. The Substance too has some real good humor. Dennis Quaid, is really the standout, an underrated actor who should of been worthy, of an Oscar someone down his career. He plays the villain, heartless, eccentric, over the top, and he was born for the role, the late Ray Liotta cast. As we are almost seeing out this year, make The Substance your must see film, for a hell of a movie night, you won't forget, and be glad you went..
Thrillkill (1984)
No thrill at all
It really pains me, where you see a movie cover, and you're really misled, and really let down. Much was the case with ThrillKill. A lot of nothing happening, little blood, and basically the jerk around. There's hardly anything redeeming here. A shame as there was a good story, not the one I expected, which was a negative for me, but they could of really built upon it, where it's just a mess and lazily approached. Some of the performances are amateurish, stoic. At least, Massey who's really good, brings a lot of energy to the role, as an unwitting victim, caught in a situation, involving her dead sister, who wasn't the bookish, Miss Goody two shoes, you initially think. She was ripping off a lot of money, from her shady computer gaming company, and the bad guys will go to many lengths to retrieve their funds. Massey kind of falls in love with a stud, hot cop, who's not all he seems. For most of the duration, this film is a by the numbers bore, and largely disappointing, which warranted a lot of annoyance from me. If the movie and premise, was much better applied and tightly scripted, it would of been much more engaging, but as it is, this will hardly warrant a re watch, if only for hot Massey.
The Dead Come Home (1989)
Oh dude....
Being Troma, I pretty knew what to expect, but I expected much more laughs, and to be flashy, punchy. Granted, there is some smart humor, and I was laughing inside, but like the house itself, it was dull and drabs, with some quite pathetic kiss and blood letting. This film had a really good story. The reckless and opinionated, bully, take no s**t character of Steve was really the only film's blessing and standout, where the others are all cliched characters, you've seen in other horror movies, in similar situations. At least Steve, gave it some pep, during this whole miserable affair. It really just becomes an excruciating, dragging watch. It would of been better for them to do this terrible movie in zany comedy like, Bill And Ted, and be lively, colorful, which I really thought this movie would be like. How wrong I was.
In a Violent Nature (2024)
Nasty nature and many trudging footsteps
Like a box that shouldn't of been open, is a locket which shouldn't of been stolen. Coincidentally, speaking of fire towers, which some idiot dude in this, stole a locket from, had watched Wrong Turn yesterday. This stolen locket, hanging at the bottom towers, unleashes an evil monster man, whose masked looks very Fury Roadish, or Bad Boy Bubbyrish, except for these bars on the goggle eyes, and a small pair of scissors hanging off the mask bottom. We come to expect the kind of overdone gore, we get from this, one kill, involving intestinal yoga, and blood spillages. We hear the back story of our monster Johnny as a kid, a 70 year old tale, told around the campfire. The early four minute campfire dialogue, just passes off as dry, 'Who cares territory', not helped by the dry acting. No one in this, is familiar. The many behind the shoulder shots, of our vengeful Johnny on his vengeful journey to reclaim his locket, will anger a lot of people. This does work, providing quite a bit of suspense in the early scenes, but later it just becomes part and parcel of the film. Just because your gonna use different kind of tracking shots, shooting styles, doesn't mean it's gonna make it better or suspenseful. When I now think about all the trudging footsteps through grass sounds and the BTS shots, of our monster maniac, I really get annoyed. And yet, the film does seem very different, but not good. I do admire independent horror film makers, but they really need to get better stories and scripts, as this was just a by the number kill film, from which I was quite mistaken, pre watch. The last scene with the surviving victim in the car, with the old woman samaritan, well acted by the way, the only slightly familiar star in this, was probably the best scene in the film, apart from the early suspenseful BTS shot of our monster man, walking towards those two arguing men, at the farmhouse. The end shot will anger a few too. 'A leave it up to you to conclude ending', if you will.
Longlegs (2024)
Long comes up short
I really expected much more from this, and this was painfully evident, the more this Blair Witchety/Fallen psychological thriller progressed. The two leads are superb, and the other two main supports, do us solid. But really, there wasn't much story wise, to work with, and story wise, we've been down this too familiar road before. But still, there's a different air and the film really has a really creepy atmosphere, scary music, and a new horror villian, joining the rest of those others, we've loved to hate for decades. He's the hideous ghoulish faced Cage, known as the infamous Longlegs. A performance of mastery, Cage saying he'll never play a another serial killer, a blessing, as the one he creates here, is one of scary brilliance, a masterpiece performance, one worthy of stepping on the Academy Award radar. If only he starred in a better film. I really felt like I was being jerked around in this, and having T Rex music in it, which obviously is Longlegs choice of band, didn't make it better. As Longleg's accomplice, I seriously wasn't surprised by the identity, which was just another minus. The opening feels very much like the start of that movie, The Snowman. One scene I actually loved, involved the young girl store clerk, unphased by LongLegs creeping behaviour, as he pulls his trademark, crisscrossing hands across face gesture. I really felt short sheeted here, but Cage must truly be acknowledged for one of the creepiest performances of all time, including his own, the pinnacle of quite a comedown of a film.
South Beach (1993)
Call it a night brother
This is an interesting film, in the sense it is different. But also, it's a WTF film, with some real WTF moments. It's a film, you wonder what the story is, or where the hell it's going. The film seems to have a few stories. One scene I thought was entirely pathetic, was the robbery scene with Williamson's Mum in a wheelchair. Her acting, response, and reacting was over the top. Vanity, playing a sex operator is getting bad calls, and why is ex PI Busey taking a holiday for a few weeks. The movie is cut and chopped, has bad editing, joining those really B grade views. Forster is solid as a detective friend of Williamson, but it's Peter Fonda who's excellent here as bartender and close friend. Even Stella Stevens makes an a..e of herself in this. Plus, we have a nasty Silva in a cameo role, and also a very pi..ed off Sam Jones near the end. Even the ending song is out of whack for this. Great VHS cover. Don't be fooled. Shoddy boys, Shoddy.
Crime Zone (1988)
crime riddled film
Before Liosa branched out with bigger films, this little, unremarkable and forgettable sci fi action pic, but with really good sets, generates moderate interest, helped by it's eye catching VHS cover. Hot exotic dancer/ex whore, Fenn, donning short white hair, and new lover, young hunky unemployed Bone, give decent sexy performances, as the ruled civilians in the dystopian crime zone. Itching to get free, they are thrown an opportunity, they can't resist by a shady stranger, cigarette smoking Carradine, who really doesn't have to act, and doesn't appear until the 32 minute mark of the film. He's in a few scenes, as the film progresses, and does add color to a somewhat, other unoriginal and thin premise, with some larger than life supports. Carradine's character is very intriguing, multi layered, but Fenn and hunk carry it. There's a fresh, sexy presence she carries in film, and she is really good. Unremarkable B great film isn't. C'mon' up your game, Lioza.
Daddy's Deadly Darling (1973)
Pre MOTEL HELL flick
As going by alternative titles, one also being THE KILLER, this bad movie does have an interesting premise, and quite a bit of fake (under red), blood splattering, 70's style, one shot, we could do without, if a dog lover. Black haired beauty, Toni Lawrence, Mrs ex Billy Bob Thornton's wife, plays an insane beauty on the lam, who takes residence, at this not too popular diner. Sadly run by another murderer, an unpopular old farmer. Kind of hermit guy, who feeds his over squealing pigs, human body parts. Our lead doesn't do a bad job as our, schizophrenic nutter, but there are quite few times, where she just so overplays it, it's laughable, where it's easy to see, who wore the pants in the ex Thornton family. Better performances come in the supports, the real life father of Toni, faring much better in a fine performance, as the other pig feeder/nutter. The two old complaining, neighboring women, also gave grounded, take note performances, while Jesse Vint, who's so cool, gives a good honest performance. He's really the life of this nasty, dreary little feature. We also have a rocking soundtrack, plus a lot of great close ups of pigs. Our hot lead Toni, is really the problem, as she can get so damn annoying in this, but her overacting does too up the entertainment factor. THE VHS COVER, courtesy of Medusa/CBS Fox of THE KILLER, which is almost impossible to get, just features an angry snarling pig. I think this low budget trasher, will make a few horror fans snarl too. Not without interest, but this just won't be every horror fan's cup of tea. And again I will say, just how cool Jesse Vint. Keep on driving, keep on smiling.
Saw X (2023)
Don't scam Jigsaw
Here's a more realistic, smarter entry in the Saw films, re uniting our lovable 'do right' duo, giving superb performances. Cancer struck John Kramer has only a short time, before leaving our earth. Hearing of an isolated clinic in beautiful Mexico, where there's promise of a cure, a second opinion as such, he becomes another in the clinic of the damned scammed. As consequence for our fake doctor culprits, another torture porn game begins, where they're put to the test, in making that choice in those contraptions of death. This is a fresh take of story I really like, and Bell is just as awesome, as is Smith, plus good performances from the supporting, the standout one being, our beautiful scamming diva. There's some nice little twists as we move towards the finale, the only criticism being, our diva really doesn't suffer a bloody demise, or go head to head with Smith, which I was really waiting for. There's plenty of violence to please Saw fans, some of it, coming close to overstepping into an R18+ view. Some moments will cause you to wince, involving some nice drilling. A separate starter small fry kill, in it's opening, goes nicely too. Overall, a fine Saw film. Our Saw team, be proud of this one.
Soldier's Revenge (1986)
Not the best revenge
I love John Savage, and he has made better stuff than this. He comes home to a not so friendly welcome, as an ex soldier, turning traitor for a secret Vet mission, which I appreciated for his own reasons. He last anti war words in the film, which I also appreciated, are probably the best thing, about this okay actioner yarn, which is nothing to write home about. For Savage fans, it's not without interest, but the movie just sums up to forgettable action fare. Savage's character too, can fight when cornered, by an angry group of bar folk. He becomes a patsy as agreeing to fly a woman involved with radical activity, so of course, we root for John. The movie's bold poster cover, misrepresents the atmosphere of story, so one can feel downtrodden, as many will here. Okay.
Heat and Dust (1983)
Watch!
I've always been fascinated by this film, when first seeing the trailer, for it, as it was a double bill with Diva, at a drive in, or small theatre. Cut 40 years later, I've finally seen it, and in no way was I bored, or disappointed. It's one of those I really enjoy, and become more engrossed in, as the movie rolls at a beautiful, and respected pace and rhythm. Beautiful and excellent performances, all round. Scacchi's presence dazzles. Christie is really good too, taken on a beautiful and life learning journey of love, while investigating her great aunt's (Scacchi) life. One wild zesty character she meets, who's turned Buddist, is a hoot, and really mad his scenes fun to watch, stealing them. I must say from the other reviews, this film has taken sort of a bum rap. It's just as good, as the score of those other, well known films, with India as a backdrop. And Scacchi's future choice and decision, will reflect on the viewer. Give this one, an afternoon reserved viewing and I'm sure you'll be engaged. Some beautifully sought out filming locations, grabbing performances, and other things make Heat And Dust, a surefire of a viewing.
Nightmare in Badham County (1976)
Real nightmare
A trashy feel in it's starting, this nasty little shocker escalates to a much more disturbing view, with echoes of many 70's slave films and B prison movies. Two nubile innocents, sexy teen, Raffin and her pretty black friend, who get on the wrong side of corrupt cop (Connors) someone you don't want to cross, especially when having car trouble, are propelled into a living hell, when neatly framed by you know who. They're sent to this plantation, prison, run by more corrupt parties, even a Governor, Reed of all people, in a standout performance. You don't see much of him, and one wonders why, he didn't do more with his career. One scene, in particular, which is disturbing, has him raping a prisoner/minor, in the backyard of his quarters. Ralph Bellamy as a corrupt judge, was a surprise to see in this. The prisoners are whipped, raped, starved, and in some cases, buried, not alive. This film has a very nasty and shocking air, where it''s start, doesn't prepare for the turn, or the atrocities which follow. That's what I liked about it. There is a really a pull no punch atmosphere. It's very grim, and there are some truly evil characters, and there are some painful obvious moments of predictability. But on the surface, it's just trashy B 70's exploitation in nastiness, there to shock, but well acted, regardless, and boy, does the late Raffin sure look fine. And can you spot Gilligan's Ginger?
Trafficking (2023)
Don't believe the bad
Before I review this, I just wanna say, my shock of finding out the great Nicholas Ball, had died yesterday, which is when, I watched this impressive, entertaining vehicle. I pass on my condolences to Nicholas's family, easily the best actor in it, stealing every scene. Though there is some bad acting in this, most people aren't at fault. Cool, well structured film, has a good script, excluding all the F and C words, which a bit trying, but for laughs, very entertaining, as in it's first 30 minutes, where it kind of lessened after. I loved the repentant stocky hero, a tired ex hitman, who's just been told some very bad news. He's someone I vouched for, and really understood. When he and his colleague go to collect on a debt, at the request of their boss, they inadvertently collide with some real drug dealing scumbuckets, also there to collect, but in a different way, for they're also involved in human trafficking, and the daughter of the soon to be slayed couple, looks mighty fine. But repentant Requiem returns to snatch away from her traffickers, and so begins a hunt down. I made this film for a big action one, which it really wasn't, but it's story, really got me in, with some really beautiful and potent scenes. The ones with Ball, who just owns his scenes. The main, was really good too, as well as young Hughes as the trafficked daughter. Liked the slow zoom in shots too, and a much appreciated, and unexpected last scene, where I cheered on the victor. It has a real coolness. The pre start featuring late Eastenders Leslie (Dirty Den) Grantham, although weird, as though trying to promote the film's company, was a cute little starter. Tight recommended drama. Films slap on title, doesn't befit story.
Restraining Order (1999)
Nifty cool B thriller
RO is one of those movies which entertained much more than I thought it would. A great dramatic situation thriller which pitts hot show defendant Roberts, up against some real scum. When I saw this movie was directed by the same guy who made A Murder Of Crows, which I haven't seen, but have seen the trailer, funnily enough when watching this, I thought a lot about that movie, running much similar lines to this. RO is pacy and engaging, and Roberts is always an actor attention grabber. His life has become a nightmare after witnessing up close and personal, a client/mobster he has just got off, a James Russo looking guy, slay a aging friend, who owes gambling debts. As if to really reiterate to Roberts, a few times, the consequences of turning him in, and really making himself heard, Roberts fights back, and things really become personal. This is a well formulated thriller with good performances. A real slick thriller surprise moment near the end, I much appreciated, RO is wonderful thriller entertainment, which warrants unrestrained viewing.
Danger Zone III: Steel Horse War (1990)
silver steeled action
I saw the whole set up from the start, the game Reaper was playing, and along comes, our hero, an ex cop, now a biker intent on tracking him down. This B movie isn't bad movie fare, with a bit of bad acting, and better strength in it's leads, as our escapee, Reaper. Is now riding with his reunited bad biker pack, who are after this find involving confederate medals. We come across a tasty blonde, some beautiful models on a shoot. And a score of busty beauties in tasty lingerie, assisting this professor with an interesting face, who's beaten Reaper to his rich rewards Though this is a patchy, flawed, with some pathetic moments, kind of flick, it is quite fun. The video cover of our star actor, with a black busty babe, we only meet her in the last two minutes of film. But Wade is a real hero we can vouch for, and to who the revealed father figure reading our movie, through comic, I really admired. As I did, Wade's methods of getting information, via tattoo insignia. The photographer's brazen words to two d**khead bikies, interrupting a model shoot, I couldn't believe. This was quite an entertaining surprise, but still, B movie is B movie. Quite violent in bits too.
Indio (1989)
Our boy Indio
Here's a movie that really has something to say, and it hits it's points hard. I like movies which have intentions, and messages, and this good actioner, with an appealing lead, does that. Dennehy, here as the baddie makes a meal of his role, in top form as a officer tyrant, a greedy developer, intent on bulldozing and tearing down the rain forests, irrespectful who (the villages) may'be living within there. They just didn't count on this returning party, handsome Indio, with warfare in his blood who takes on Dennehy and goons. There's a lot of action, explosions, and a bit of romance, and blow bullet through hollow cane, shooting, a nifty action of attack. It's ending touched me, and I really liked the moment between hero and his once training black captain. An actioner, a notch above the others of this norm. We also hear an unforgettable voice, Director Dawson uses, in a lot of his exploitation dubbed pics.
Reborn (1981)
birth of a different movie watch
From the first frame, the fancy gyrating helicopter, circling a tall building bearing, a big lit up cross, and an encapsulating music score, we pretty know what to expect in the ensuing ninety minutes. Reborn is beautiful, mesmerizing, a little shocking, intriguing, and engaging, and again, beautiful in it's whole duration of weirdness, and style. Only some would be able to follow the story, where a lot of others will be trying to put the dots together. I am in this category. But it's a more fun way, to enjoy it, then the other. It's just a especial movie, one that's very inspiring. As for the performances, you can pretty much see Hopper spouting out his beliefs in effective shouts. And his trademark pointing gesture. Moriarty fares better as a touched party, who's girlfriend, is showing some quite, scary behavior. At one point, in reference to one shock scene, you could say, he's in, but not out. Moriarty always brings so much heart to every character, I consider him to be the greatest actors out there. The movie does drag a little towards the end, but just see this movie once, for the experience, Amen.
Chapter Two (1979)
A chapter worth reviewing
What a night with this underrated film. Yes I really liked James Caan, who again, plays James Caan, with fine support, where I always love watching Bologna. Here, he's an interferring brother, who's set his widowed and struggling writer of a brother, on a series of misfire dates, but Mason is a whole new kettle of fish, that special find. I've always loved watching this fantastic actress, and she does so much with every role, and again, she makes an impact, every reaction, whatever, is totally believable, even in her actress character, who finds herself, in somewhat of a crisis, as saying "I do" too soon, after Caan's impulse of a proposal, where when vacationing, he begins having flashbacks of his former wife, as bringing her to the same paradise, even ending up in the same suite. And here the conflict and heavy drama starts, which made the sudden cold Caan character, kind of enthralling, as to his impasse. Great angle of story. I always find Caan, a bit dry as an actor, where Mason, Bologna, and of course Harper (Rhoda) bring more excitement and gusto to their roles. As if forgetting, then not being surprised at all, to see Harper and Bologna in this, being Neil Simon, years before Rio, for me, this was one of the film's perks. But what I really loved was the pre meet, the back and forth short phone talks, which was good and ingenius writing. Yes, this film has a lot to offer, with such a fitting ending, which can't be topped. Turn the chapter, off the bad reviews with this one, and like this marriage, give it a chance.
Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977)
Looking for a good movie, look no further, stars, bars, scars
Zip in for a mildly unsettling experience, partly due to a fantastic cruel music score. Sexy and really messed up individual, Keaton, lonely as hell, teaches deaf kids during the day, where her night life consists of bar finding men, for one night stands, mostly. Her character is impossible, won't listen, really afraid to settle down, and lead the normal married life. She beds married men, others of not so fortunate picking. Keaton, who I could never understand, not getting nominations for the Godfather films, is right at home here, and slips into her character perfectly. A real natural, engaging, SEXY, YES!, and sad character who you do sympathize with, but also disapprove of as to the way she chooses her decisions, bringing out violent actions in certain not so friendly or I should really say, not so unbalanced men, through the 136 minute film. All the actors give fine performances, notably the one who jumped out at me, being Gere, as a violent, unpredictable, stud type scumbag, while demonstrating some quite weird behavior, and bopping and taping tabletops a lot. He comes in and out a few times, in Keaton's, mostly uninvitéd company The other one, Atherton (him and Gere again later in the cop drama, No Mercy in 1987) is hard to figure out, intriguing, if slightly menacing. He becomes the main male support in Keaton's dangerously indulgent lifestyle, another married man, a professor early in the peace, such an incredible narcissisitic pr**k.'Tuesday Weld is very good as Keaton's more together sister, while the actor playing the father is really good, as the actress playing mother. What a movie experience this is, as is the devastating and violent end. Good solid drama, with well created characters, many you won't forget for a while. The imaginary scenes, those moments in Keaton's imaginings, work well too. Highly recommended watch.
Grand Canyon (1991)
Like the Grand Canyon, something you should see
Inspirational movies really intrigue and excite me. This one is freshly different . It makes you evaluate, what you are willing to risk, and what you can lose in a heartbeat. With a stellar cast, these great actors draw us into their characters, more than most films do. Two strangers become good friends, one, a saviour to the other. One of their wives discovers a dumped infant and adopts him. Martin is great as a self centered screenwriter/sugar daddy, who recovers from a violent incident, whose philosophies on life are indeed, interesting. Also a young jilted hottie, who has a strong and honest view on married men. The canyon itself, again a breathtaking view. Don't look for plot, more for situation, and you'll take away, quite a bit from this film, including two great dream sequences, the first one, quite an exhilarating watch. Real truth, nineties style. Highly recommended and thought provoking watch.
American Gigolo (1980)
Gere in gear
Gere, tailor made for this role, for which Stallone, reportedly walked out on, carries this near two hour Schrader drama, as an illegitimate gigolo for hire, who gets nastily framed by an acquaintance. Gere's character is sad, as nobody will rush to his aid, and things get worse, where he's pestered more by a disbelieving detective (Elizondo) . Hot looking Hutton becomes his saviour in more ways than one, and this is what I really liked about the film, which drags on a little bit, but really markets Gere. Of course, the opening is classically memorable in the sense of the Deborah Harry hit, 'Call Me'. Good drama, though runs thin on story. Schrader has done better. Really a vehicle for an emerging Gere talent, and he fits the bill perfectly and expensively.
Australia Laughs (1984)
Australia won't be laughing.
I love standup comedy videos, and I was quite downtrodden here with this sixty minute, mild laugh fest. First, we have a true blue fair dinkum' Aussie, unfunny. Then an impersonator who was above average, in his impersonations, which gave me a couple of hee haws. Prized asset was Vince Sorrenti, in the next act, which was the best duration of this vid, and a disgusting pig of an act by comedian/actor Garry Who, which really had me wondering, if he the latter woud leave the club, unscathed, one audience member, leaving the show in a huff, after being told by him, in jest to F off. Back in the 80's, this would of been funnier, but to me now, there are funnier Ocker comedy clubs, but I love, how it took me back. Strictly for the undemanding, but fascinating as to how far Who takes his verbal comedy abuse.
