Nick of Time (1995)
Totally Dispensable
AVERAGE. A predictable film without much creativity. An attempt was made to create a climate of tension for the plot but using illogical and even impossible subterfuge. It left some gaps without explanation to the viewer and the focus is totally on the question of 'action'. I do not recommend this film.
The Crossing 2 (2015)
Only watchable
MEDIAN. A film that begins with a romance story and then becomes a drama. This first part (novel) has a somewhat slow and even tedious rhythm but then develops into an accelerated rhythm, helping to improve the quality of the narrative, especially during the shipwreck.
Because it is based on a real story, there is a tendency for the facts to have logic in the events and without many inventions on the part of the writer. However, I found the way it was narrated somewhat confusing. You get a little lost and don't understand some connections between the characters. This is a negative point in the film.
I confess that after watching it, I was not interested in watching the first part (The Crossing (2014)).
I was inclined to give a lower grade, but I consider 6 as adequate in the rating.
The Dinner Party (2020)
Well... it could be better
GOOD. I found this horror movie interesting and intriguing. I evaluate films based on the entertainment caused in the viewer much more than in other aspects. And on that, it has my approval. This one has managed to keep me entertained throughout its screening. But it could have been better. Up to half the film, okay. The atmosphere of expectation caused reminds me a bit of the movie "Babette's Feast" (1987). It has unusual elements that value the plot. After the half, it becomes predictable and the same as several other films of the same genre and this greatly diminishes the strength of the film, damaging it in its rating. Anyway, I RECOMMEND IT.
Forever Young (1992)
Indispensable to movie fans
VERY GOOD. Exciting and captivating movie. I consider this one of the indispensable films for those who love cinema and one of the best films of 1992. It reminds me of a lot of Steven Spielberg's films, with a great script behind them, good characters, and the presence of children. (Just for the record, Forever Young was directed by Steve Miner). Currently, Mel Gibson is magnificent in his character. I have watched many films from decades past and this was a pleasant discovery. Be sure to watch it. strongly recommending.
Die geliebten Schwestern (2014)
For those who like novels
Median. A novel based on the love triangle involving the German writer Friedrich Schiller. I found the film long (almost 3 hours long) and, at one point, tiring. It's worth as knowledge about this love affair of the writer I wasn't aware of. I believe that 6 perfectly reflects the rating of this film. I like films set in the classical period, specifically in the second half of the eighteenth century. Schiller is a contemporary of Mozart and Beethoven, and during the execution of the film, listening to the soundtrack, this detail reminded me of the two composers.
Xiong chu mo: Yuan shi shi dai (2019)
Simply boring
AVERAGE. Animation with good graphics, good production, but with a BAD story, tiring and boring. The initial proposal was good, but the result was weak. There is no point in having a good format if the content does not please. And because I don't like it, I don't recommend it.
Patty Hearst (1988)
The kidnapping of Patty Hearst
AVERAGE. I found the film average, even though it was produced for TV and on a low budget. The purpose, as everyone knows, was to portray the girl's kidnapping and captivity in the most reliable way possible. And also to present the motives of the crime in the vision of the revolutionary Marxist group SLA. However, I believe that the events could have been better portrayed, especially highlighting the issue of Stockholm Syndrome suffered by the character. But it is a narrative of the facts for those who want to know the girl's story.
Diplomatie (2014)
An Ode to Diplomacy
VERY GOOD. Interesting and engaging story based on an event from the end of World War II. It is an Ode to diplomacy. Although the film is centered on two men, inside a living room and contains little movement or action, it attracts the attention of the viewer. You are well entertained by the plot. The dialogues are perceptive and well-paced. One detail that caught my attention is the language used in the film: Germans speaking German and French speaking French. This sounds much more pleasant than seeing the English language always used in such cinematic circumstances, especially when it comes to portraying the Second World War. I enjoyed watching the movie, I gave it a high grade and therefore I RECOMMEND IT.
Ba wang bie ji (1993)
Chinese art for fans of oriental culture
AVERAGE. A film about a Chinese theater company (Chinese opera) that tries to survive the troubled Chinese revolutionary period throughout the 20th century. It was produced to commemorate 200 years of Beijing opera. The film is a little slow but very typical of that country's cinematography. It is a film to contemplate the positive aspects of this film, which are: photography, music, costumes, dance, and, mainly, of the Chinese culture of the last century and all the Beijing theatrical tradition. For those who enjoy all this, this is a recommended film. It is worth it for that. I found the film quite long (almost 3 hours long) and even tiring to watch. So I rated it as average.
When Trumpets Fade (1998)
I liked it
GOOD. Simple film produced for TV (HBO) and located in one of the battles of the period of the second world war. And because it's produced for TV, don't expect a big production, with great sets and excellent special effects. I like almost every film about wars, especially those that show them realistically, without ideological propaganda, utopian heroism, or the like. Therefore, I classify this as one of the good films I have seen, despite the excess of drama presented in the conflict between elements of the platoon and some small flaws in logic. This one managed to keep me motivated until the end and, for that reason alone, it deserves a good note. I RECOMMEND.
Secuestro (2016)
Interesting and well built
VERY GOOD. One of the best films I have ever seen in the 'crime' category. A lot of suspense and mystery fill this Spanish film. I confess that I didn't expect much at the beginning, but throughout the film, the events were happening and made me more and more interested in the result. For those who want a good movie option, here's an option. I strongly recommend it.
7500 (2019)
Interesting and with good action
GOOD. I consider the initial objective of the film to be met, which is to cause suspense in the audience and to work on the 'action' factor. Looking only at this aspect, ok. As far as I know, it is not based on real events. Thus, it is possible to perceive several logical flaws in the events. For example, the co-pilot's attitudes during the narrative are absurd and not compatible with a real situation. It is even comical to watch the actor dramatize an issue that should only be dealt with from a technical point of view, according to the existing global air safety requirements. In any case, it counts as entertainment, which is what matters. So I give it a high grade. You will have fun. I RECOMMEND!
Dirty Sexy Saint (2019)
Watchable
REASONABLE. Typical TV movie. Simple and predictable story. The main actors are handsome and athletic and were chosen to make the light sexy scenes more captivating to the audience. I didn't understand why the title ('dirty sexy saint'), since I couldn't find a match with the narrative. Frankly, as for my recommendation, watch it only if you do not have something better available.
One Glorious Sunset (2020)
A glorious waste of time
BAD. Super boring production for TV. Monotonous story and low budget production. Weak, confusing, and not very creative script. watching until the end is a pain. Don't waste your time on this. I do not recommend it. Choose another one to entertain you.
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1988)
Unmissable film
VERY GOOD. This film is one of those that is probably part of the film gallery to be watched by any film buff. I had heard of it over the years, but I had never had the opportunity to see it. Well, anyway, the day has come. The cast is phenomenal. The protagonists are fantastic in their roles. The story (drama/romance) is interesting and is based on a book of the same title. Something that I highlight is the number of nude scenes which makes the film very attractive due to the aesthetic beauty of Lena Olin and Juliette Binoche. I recommend.
Les 7 jours du talion (2010)
Brutal revenge for horror fans
GOOD. Brutal thriller/horror on the topic of revenge that aims to cause agony, discomfort, amazement, and perplexity in the audience. It has striking, agonizing, disturbing, and even explicit scenes of nudity and torture. I classify it more as horror than a thriller. Don't watch it if you don't have the stomach for horror films like this. The feeling it gives you is to want the plot to end soon to get rid of the agony. The film has several flaws in logic and some of the situations created by the screenwriter were counter-census forged just merely to support the plot. And that detracted from its quality. However, I give it a high rating because of the objectives already outlined which I identify as fully accomplished. I recommend it.
Gabriel's Inferno: Part One (2020)
Somewhat confusing
AVERAGE. The film based on a book. It is intriguing and a little confusing. The characters are in an eternal game of conquest and seduction. I had to read the synopsis before finishing the film to try to understand what it was about and to discover the plot's objectives. I found the film a little boring, tedious and slow, although always curious about the events. So I gave it a median grade in the IMDB rating. I don't know if the book on which the film is based is good or not. Maybe it works a lot better.
Uprising (2001)
Watchable war drama
GOOD. I like films based on real events, especially involving the events of Nazi-occupied Europe. This is an interesting mini-series made for TV. It has good movement and seeks to portray as much as possible the facts that occurred. The pace is fast as if the author wanted to condense as many scenes as possible within its 3 hours. The cut of the scenes is typical of films for TV. Recommended for those who like films about war.
Cousin Bette (1998)
One of the good films of 1998
GOOD. Pleasant satirical comedy to watch. Set at the end of the first half of the 19th century, it has great costumes, renowned actors, and an excellent soundtrack. By the way, the soundtrack is filled with great classics of classical music from that period. The script is well constructed and intelligible with lots of satire and sarcasm. The pace of the film is very busy, with the succession of several events every minute. I gave it a 7 because I didn't see anything extraordinary, exceptional, captivating, exciting, or different from other better films that I have seen that could elevate it. As for my recommendation to IMDb moviegoers, yes, I recommend it.
Jimi Hendrix (1973)
For fans of the legendary Jimmy Hendrix
GOOD. A documentary about one of the guitar legends, Mr. Jimmy Hendrix. Anyone who is a fan can not miss watching. There are several testimonials and songs played at shows. Among the several documentaries already released about the guitarist, I highlight 1985 one for TV, called "Jimi Hendrix: Hear My Train a Comin", which is complementary to this one. Both are good. In the case of this one from 1973, I highlight the blues 'Hear My Train a Comin' that is played on acoustic guitar. I recommend.
Siworae (2000)
VERY GOOD
Simple, pleasant, and captivating film to watch. Competent, beautiful, and friendly actors. Exciting story capable of capturing the viewer's attention for the entire duration of the film. You get that feeling that the movie might even last longer. This film had a remake called "The Lake House" (2006) which I also recommend you watch. Both are good, although the original ends up having a bigger impact. A third option that also addresses the issue of human space-time communication/relationship is the classic film "Somewhere in Time" (1980). Such fiction/fantasy is intriguing and works well as a theme for films. Anyway, for those who like romance, "Il mare" is an excellent option. I strongly recommend it.
Kiraware Matsuko no isshô (2006)
COMIC DRAMA OF BLACK HUMOR
AVERAGE. I decided to watch it on IMDB's high score. I think the classification is somewhat exaggerated. As the synopsis itself says, it is a film about the tragic and cruel life of the character Matsuko. It's a fairy tale inside out. Matsuko, since childhood, wanted to live a Cinderella life, a happy life amid adversity, but this is not always favorable to us. He dreamed of becoming a white swan but found himself to be a black swan. The pace of the film is accelerated, trying to present all the main memories of the character within its two hours of duration. The highlight is the soundtrack, which is filled with lullabies.
Byeon-ho-in (2013)
Justice at any price
GOOD. Interesting and inspiring story. Initially, you think it is a motivational film, the kind in which the protagonist manages to rise from nothing to success in his career. However, this is not the focus of the film. It is a film about JUSTICE and justice in a corrupt and authoritarian judicial environment. The title already foreshadows what you will see throughout your execution: lawyer, judge, court, police ... I was not curious to research, but perhaps the film is biographical (based on a real story). The phrase that motivates and guides our main character reflects his conduct throughout the plot: "Never Give Up". It is a self-help phrase commonly found in motivational books. The main actor is competent (perhaps one of the best in South Korea) and his performance is impeccable. I recommend.
Lo chiamavano Jeeg Robot (2015)
Italian superhero
GOOD. Italian ci-fi of a superhero. In reality, he is a type of anti-hero, a delinquent who lives on small urban crimes and who suddenly discovers he has supernatural powers. It somewhat resembles another character from American cinema and comic books: Deadpool. For those who have seen one of the Deadpool films, you will know what it is about. Perhaps it is a trend in modern cinema to create unconventional superhero stories, with satire, humor, irony, and sarcasm. The special effects are simple but suited to the purpose of the narrative. The story is interesting and entertaining. Like almost all superhero films, the film's events are forged by the author to match the narrative. It's a good movie for entertainment, which is what matters. I recommend.
Twelfth Night or What You Will (1996)
Shakesperean adaptation
AVERAGE. My assessment for this film is purely in terms of 'entertainment', okay? And in this regard, without considering others, my grade is just average. It is an adaptation of one of William Shakespeare's works. The performance is good and very theatrical with extravagant gestures, caricatures, expressions, language, humor, typical of medieval British theatrical comedies. It's kind of a comic opera. Recommended for lovers of literary classics adapted to cinematography. I am not particularly a big fan of this type of film, but I would not be bothered to watch others of the same kind.
