SLC Punk! (1998)
Clearly that other person DIDN'T understand it...
Um, so that comment they have up on the profile of this movie that is titled "Great Movie If You understand It!" clearly has no idea what the movie was about. Yes, the movie is catered to those who are/were interested in the whole "punk" fad, however you may define it. But it's not for for people who just want to "bring down the system" as that reviewer said. I mean, I'm sure you will enjoy it if you consider yourself "punk". But that's not really what the movie tried to do. The movie isn't trying to just show the entertaining side of the punk lifestyle. It's trying to show how ridiculous it is. (i.e. what happens with Devon Sawa's character) How it is just a fashion statement, a fad, like anything else. This really comes together at the end with Summer Phoenix's character and with Stevo's final thoughts, etc. You know, like everyone now with this new(-ish) pop punk phase thinks that they're really special and that they believe in power upheavals and anarchy, etc. Please, most people don't know what the anarchy movement really is. Being uncool, has just become cool. And that's what the point this movie was trying to make. That Stevo and Bob weren't going to mess up the system, etc. That they're just into a fad like anyone else.
With that said, I've always liked this movie. It's really entertaining, has some great quotes. I just hope the kids who see it get something more out of it than just "ooo, I like Stevo's blue hair!"
Thirteen (2003)
Give it another chance, be open-minded
Okay, like a lot of the other reviewers felt, when I first saw this movie I was really disappointed. I felt like it was over dramatic and unrealistic. I thought they dumped all the cliché teenage problems on Tracy and it was too much. But I gave it another chance. And since then I've seen it so many times and it has really grown on me. I can't stop watching it actually. There's just something about it that doesn't come out right away.
I mean, it's hard to say the movie is unrealistic when Nikki Reed was drawing from her own personal experiences. And no, most thirteen year-old girls don't go through Tracy's experiences, but that doesn't mean that they don't happen. And I'm okay now with her getting all those problems because that way more girls can find ways to relate to her. We assume that Catherine and Nikki were making a general statement about 13 y/o girls, but I'm not sure that's really what they were trying to do. It's just one story, and people don't need to take it so personally and get so offended. (And I totally understand that initial reaction, I had the same one.)
Instead, just take it as one account on a teenage girl's life. I think it does effectively show the dangers that are out there. It portrays a good message to parents, mothers especially. People say it's unoriginal and not shocking, but I personally can't think of another movie that has effectively shown young girls in this light.I didn't think this movie needed to shock me to be good. I, after all, was 13 once.
Plus, the acting is really great. Holly Hunter in undeniably fantastic, and although, they bothered me at first, Nikki and Evan had really good performances too. They were definitely hard roles to take on and I commend both of them.
Yes, it's low-budge and somewhat immature. But considering they had very little to work with, the movie looks really beautiful. And I don't see why people criticize it because it wasn't the end-all greatest portrayal of adolescent girls' difficulties maturing. I don't think it's supposed to be. Like I said, it's just one story.
So I urge you to watch this movie with an open-mind and perhaps give it another chance.
Although, no, I don't think this movie is for boys/men. I just don't think they will be able to connect with and get anything out of it in the way girls can.
But mothers, definitely, see this movie.
So girls, take the story with a grain of salt but don't shut it out. If you're not ready to take this movie and accept it's faults and connect it to bigger things in you lives, then you will miss the point. And perhaps you should come back to the movie when you've matured and are ready to look back on that time in your life, and just really look at it.
Steel Magnolias (1989)
One of the Best movies I have ever seen!
I have always loved this movie. My mom and I watch it all the time and never get sick of it. It also never fails to make me both laugh and cry. It's amazing how real it is. I cannot relate to the events or the whole southern aspect to it, yet the movie is still easy to connect with. That is not only due to the incredible writing, but the acting is phenomenal. The characters feel so real. I have a hard time picking who I like best because everyone is so incredible in their own way. Even the more minor characters. But like I said, the impeccable writing is impossible to ignore. My mom and I can't seem to stop quoting it to each other. Although, yes, it is a chick flick, it is actually a good one. It's meaningful and powerful. And it's always nice to see a movie about women that does not revolve around them trying to get a man. I can't think of anything that is wrong in this movie. I really can't find a flaw. Every women, adolescents and on, should see this movie. I love it!
Wee Sing in the Marvelous Musical Mansion (1992)
best movie ever
Marvelous Musical Mansion is probably the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life. Good times! you need to see it! it's awesome! Okay, it's not actually a good movie in that kind of way. It's just a lot of fun to make fun of. fun. So you should watch it. If you're in your teen or 20's or whatever. Or just really high. Cause for kids it's probably really dumb and not entertaining at all. And it's not really educating for kids. I dunno, it's just really funny. It's just so awesome in a ridiculous, why was this movie ever made, kind of way. Take it lightly and play along. And you'll just have to enjoy it! So rent it now!! Happy watching!
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Powerful
I find it hard to believe that the people who rated this movie low really got the point of Good Will Hunting. I am moved every time I watch it to the point of tears. The language and the acting is just so incredibly real. Everyone knows a Will Hunting type and can relate to that. Or at least I know I do. The message about letting people in and trusting others isn't slammed into your face. Rather, it's shown through real emotion. Although most of us know a Will, I wish we could all have a Sean in our lives. I love this movie and I never get sick of it. It is so original and well written. I stand by my rating of ten. Give it a second chance all of you negative people.
Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Hilarious!
I was so surprised to see so many incredibly negative comments. And I just wanted to comment to say that if you hated it, then you just didn't get the humor. and that doesn't make it a bad movie. Personally I thought it was hilarious. Give it another shot. Not all movies have to have some powerful plot or story to be entertaining. And to those who said they thought the characters lacked emotion, hi, that's how they were supposed to be. Don't you get it? ARG! It's just such a simple and entertaining and I was so surprised by some of the comments. Don't listen to them. The characters are different and fresh and of course, extremely funny. This movie is very different from "normal" comedies which is why it is so great. I loved it.
Garden State (2004)
great, but lacking
In short, I really liked it. I thought the filming was well done. Beautiful cinematography. And the soundtrack was good and fitting, but I must say, I had a problem with the character development. Especially Sam, Natalie Portman. I really liked her character and the whole relationship started out really well, but towards the end, she was kinda just there. And they way she acted during the end didn't fit at all. She suddenly became so weak when she was the one who made Large strong again. I think the movie lacked building of the relationships. But other than that it was real good. It was hard to relate to the characters themselves, but I think we can all relate to the situation if we try.
