Argylle (2024)
we could not finish it
This was a dumpster fire to me, I was hoping for some good humor and good action, but this is slapstick with a few badly executed fights. Bryce, continuously screeching and not having enough smarts to figure out the most obvious things without a long think, then wiiiide eyes and then, oh wait, she got an idea!
Henry, what have you done? The story plot twist ist cheaper than a dollar cheese burger. Maybe it improved at the end, but after less than an hour we switched off, this was not watchable.
Too bad, since the casting is great, many of my favorite actors, wonder why they agreed to be in such a bad film.
Eine Billion Dollar (2023)
not like the book
I usuannly dont care much if series are not quite like the books, as of course written storytelling is different. But this is a total miss, one of the best books ever, and could have been a fantastic series. Already in the first ep it rushes over significant and memorable scenes.
The acting is also not superb, and some parts are dubbed, some not, so some post production decisions that really pull the series down. Didnt make it through all episodes, we gave up after 2.
I disliked the way the main character was portrayed, and not impressed by the casted actor, and the series is too short to show how he changed from a superficial immature moneywaster who didnt think once extra but went on impulsing his way through, and becoming a thoughtful leader who listened and learned.
Treason (2022)
Plotidea promising, characters badly written
The end to end actual storyplot with its twists and turns is good.
With a total rewrite of character behaviour this would be really good. Starts with main character, seriously. If you are a guy high up in an intelligence org, you most likely have a non disclosure agreement and it needs to made clear to your wife and family that you can NOT reveal anything about your work. It should be normal that you have to do spythings right? And that the hours are not 9-5 in national security is also totally rubbish.
All the questions from the wife are so unbelievable, what? You deserve to know? Eh, no you dont. She is hysterical and starts intervening in her husbands job.. with old army friends from CIA behind his back? Seriously?
The main character is badly casted, and not believable. He was in the field as an agent, but can hardly fight, no body posture, not good at communicating properly.
Redo this: get a bit tougher and more intelligent actor to play lead (I think John Krasinsky did a great job in Jack Ryan, unless Chris Hemsworth is available- think Extraction :-D ) And get rid of miserable doe-eyed Oona (loved her in Taboo though) and get someone like Noomi Rapace who can do a believable ex-army wife)
skip the sappy bits. The worst was when the kid comes out after they fled the safe house, oh no, they lost his teddy bear. How clichee is that, and this boy is like 11 maybe- would be more upset if he lost his switch)
and Olga, yeah keep Olga, great job, in character, really believable character.
As for all the spying and security incompetence, get someone from MI6 to read the script and point to holes in it. Works for other series!
Masterchef New Zealand (2010)
am a total masterchef fan, but this is not watchable
Watched and loved the old seasons, but this re-launch is so bad.
The three judges are flat boring personalities and the whole production looks like amateur hour compared to for example australias masterchef.
And almost as bad as US and Canadas version, did they model after that instead of the great UK version?
FBI (2018)
kind of entertaining but writing is not awesome
Every. Single. Episode. Someone yells, FBI, we just want to ask some questions- and ooooffff goes the guy, here comes the standard hunt shuffle and catch. Every episode!
Then, I actually like the characters a lot, but why is Jeremy Sisto screaming like a lower school football coach every time there is a case? As if he doesnt have a team of really good people around him knowing what to do.
After 4 seasons, we are giving up on this show soon, really no season 5 needed, thank you very much!
The Last Kingdom (2015)
top show- one star taken off for Uthreds accent
Who thought it sounds really viking scandinavian realistic and a great idea to have Alex Dreymon do a 70s x-rated Inga fromm sveeden accent?
Because that is the only thing that really pulls this show down to 9 stars for me! The rest is great, good story telling and writing, well choreographed fighting, good casting of all the characters and the middle age effects are stunning, overall this is one of the best shows out there.
I like that the saga spans over a generation, it is as good as Vikings and better than Game of thrones in my opinion.
I hope there will be further seasons, otherwise the makers could start a spin off to refresh and bring in a new generation and new characters- but please please check with someone so the fakey accents are not making it ridiculous.
The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
Stopped watching after 1 episode
Or rather few minutes into ep 2 when the Hutts came rolling into town. Badly done playdo figures, as were many of the other creatures, was this suppose to be retro? Looks like the films from the 70s, and fight scenes like ok corrall (smack boom back thuck). Have to be a sw har die fan to watch, really badly done.
Don't Look Up (2021)
could have been really good, tries too hard, and becomes ridiculous
Maybe fun for some- not black humour, too obvious, caricature slapsticky. Too exagerated, so for european humor- a big nopie from us.
A few stars for the great cast, for JenL. For the overall premise of the story.
The Green Knight (2021)
second most boring film ever
Valhalla rising was more boring, but this comes close.
Could not finish it.
This could have been good, with good dialogue, a bit of fighting and action, so many good movies and series lately from medieval times like Guy Ritchies king arthur, or if it had least been some suspenseful drama.
Many other reviews have said it all, seriously recommend not watching this.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
could not stand the snotty posh fake kids
Could have been really good, but too much posh fake accent of the kids, "perfectly splendid."
hardly any ghost story, just a bunch of people looking miserable, slow and boring, after starting to skip forward in the second ep i quit by the third.
The Counselor (2013)
I agree with.. uuh what?
Someone already wrote a Uhhh what? review so read that one.
the obscure story - was there a story? not clear. and then a dialogue of hot air and poetry, pretentious and a wasted 2 hours. probably worst film in a long while.
Brave New World (2020)
wasted opportunity - classic turned to drivel
10 minutes in I started fast forwarding.
glossy, slick, sexy, superficial and instead of being a good sci-fi series, it is butchering a classic book with a really intriguing original story. shame. nicely done.
I was hoping for something like Gattaca, but this is all a thinly veiled erotica. which is ok if you like that stuff, but taking one of litertures classic dystopian stories and slapping in short skirts and as much humpetyhumpety as possibly makes this ridiculous.
Cursed (2020)
bad writing-
You know those situations where someone says: stay in the car, and do they ever stay in the car? here we have- stay in the horse wagon.
we stopped watching after 6th episode end:
2 dudes in forrest. one gets an arrow in the neck. what would you do? duck, hide, get away? well series hero dude knees for a while to check this other guy is ok - blood spurting. then turns around, zoom in on bad guy with bow, shooting an arrow straight towards hero dude... cliffhanger next episode.. what? nope, we couldnt take it any longer.
main character is a young girl who is carrying the big magical sword. she can't fight at all, she is just clumsily waving the sword about, and people kind of automatically dies.
she keeps getting into bad situations, making bad decisions, and generally just wonks things up.
the teenage love drama doesnt help either, this could have been a great fantasy series if it wasn't so cheesy and full of stereotype.
Blindspot (2015)
season 1 and 2 were reasonably OK but then..
Really, are they flogging this dead horse for a season 5?
1 and 2 were pretty entertaining, not the best writing, and science was a bit too sloppily far out and undbelievable, and action predictable. you know when you tell people to stay in the car they never stay in the car?
what really put os off was the sullenness of the Jane character. She walks around so moody and moping, it was cringeworthy. whoever thought that would add some good angle to this series?
The Irishman (2019)
first half is decent
The story about Jimmy Hoffa is historically interesting, in a quite consumable format. But then the second half drags along so it ends up with wanting this film to just get it over with and end.
great acting, bad writing.
The Act (2019)
terrible acting
I have read the true crime stories about this case and it is really intriguing. I could not sit through the first full episode due to the really irritating acting of Joey King, of course it is not her fault, but x-sake I wish the director had given her other directions on how to do the role.
Timeless (2016)
first season was good, second rapidly declined
Totally unrealistic.. no, not the time travel part.
a special forces seal time guy who acts like a teenager, doesnt pay attention, talks when he should be paying attention, and always get caught by surprise by the bad guys.
these people are on historical missions, and even if they know they are going into difficult situations, they are always totally unprofessional, wimpy, weepy, and it causes unnecessary drama that I think is written in to get some action and excitement into the series. to no avail. you know those situations, when someone says "stay in the car"? they never stay in the car. this series is full of those situations.
season 2 gets worse as they try to get some romance drama into the story too. a pity, as the historical plot is really good.
What the Health (2017)
bad science that is easily debunked
is it allowed to post links here? after less than 10 minutes I recognized the study that was used to claim that processed meat causes cancer was something I read up about when it came out, I had to look it up again. just bing or google who bacon cause cancer bad science and you find several links explaining the study.
here is a summary: WHO claimed that bacon and such raised colon cancer risk by 18 %. so far so good, but the fact is that the net occurrence risk of cancer if you don't eat processed meat is 5% and if you do eat it 6%. so mathematically, yeah, 18% higher risk. but really there is a 1% higher risk.
then, an expert claimed that no, sugar does not cause diabetes. in todays day and age, I think this is proved through an extensive number of studies. The factual claiming of this being truth made me stop the movie and write this review.
Iron Fist (2017)
great story, great action, but lousy main actor
this started out so well, following the style of other marvel series like Luke Cage and Jessica jones. and then it turned a bit into Daredevil. The issue: how can I guy who was trained since childhood to do nothing else but fight be such a lousy fighter? His physique is not right for a start, and just look at for example Arrow, another one in the row, the Stephen Amell playing the main character - just search for some images- he is super well trained, and there are scenes in the series where he does some pretty heavy training showing he is indeed very fit. But Finn Jones is not showing the physique that someone with the claimed fighter training would have. OK, I could live with it if the martial arts skills demonstrated were not so bad. Every fight is drawn out with the boring Hollywood notion of thinking that this drives excitement. we are at episode 5, and 5 stars. Just like in Daredevil who is supposed to be a superhero, and just keeps getting totally beaten up again and again. think i will watch into the badlands instead.
Secrets and Lies (2015)
awkward and irritating
season 1: I can not get excited by the story due to the continuous focus on the annoying pressure from the cop played by Juliette Lewis, and all the plump misunderstandings due to the main character misinterpreting and acting ahead of having all the facts. season 2 was OK to watch, and as Lewis character is killed in the end, maybe season 3 gets a new cop and is watchable. now, Juliette is an awesome actor so I can only assume that the horrible outcome is due to the regisseurs instruction on how she should do it. but the character is probably one of the most unlikeable ever and because she is good at acting she plays unlikeable so believable that it is very cringeworthy to watch.
MasterChef Canada (2014)
saddest version of all masterchefs
love masterchef, especially UK, UK professionals, NZ and Australia. US is OK, but agree that Ramsay has become unauthentic. just watch his old UK Kitchen nightmares, totally different person. but this.. is not watchable.. the Canadian version seems to be choosing their candidates based on looks, pink hair and tattoos and always wearing a hat. very big brother all of it. the drama of the judges, especially Mr Leung comes across very forced. and then, the very blatant product placements, with Kraft products that are definitely fresh local produce. it is so obvious and makes me NOT want to buy these products.
I am actually cringing sometimes. Please, please, improve.
The Catch (2016)
Stupidity ruins the suspension
when suspension is build up based on things happening due to someones stupidity, then I get all upset. you know when someone says: stay in the car, and you know: they wont stay in the car. that kind of cheap effort to try to build drama. This is where I stopped watching- beginning episode 3: criminal pretends to be photographer, meets in a flat with I think estate agent to take photos through window of a building with 2 towers for whatever marketing purpose, they don't know each other. 2 seconds later they are at it on the sofa. as she gets to his interesting bits.. she says "and I thought our towers were impressive" - bad acting and cheesy lines, couldn't stand it.
Oh, Mireille.. you are so awesome, in the Killing you portrayed on of the best leads ever. How could you agree to those fake eyelashes?
How to Get Away with Murder (2014)
fast forward on the sex scenes and main plot
the series is described as sexy. don't get me wrong, I am not a prude and don't mind sex scenes. but these are so boring because they don't really have any tension. people have immediate sex. "wanna xx? OK." like, fancy a bagel? the main plot is unfortunately dragging a bit. one or two bits of new info each episode.
I do like the build up of the cases though, so if the main characters were just a bit more believable and not over-acting and exaggerated, this show might earn a decent 7. some people have said that it is not like the real world when it comes to lawyers real life but that is fully OK.
so many really good series out there nowadays, this is a time filler.
Minority Report (2015)
loved the movie, love Philip K. Dick, this is a disgrace
this could have been such an awesome series. right. starting with 10 stars. subtracting 5 stars for the main character casting. and scoping out of her character. and stylist. Honestly, the story does not need cleavage. she is too glossy and would fit better in something like Revenge. subtracting one more for the not well thought out substory lines. I even thought the precogs were OK casted and the acting OK. there were some side characters that I didn't like much, and it was very obvious who was the bad guy the whole time. I am very sad that a great book and a great movie was slaughtered like this. just a bit less gloss and a bit more mystery and this could have passed as OK.
The Whispers (2015)
Worst in a long time.
so good that watching shows is voluntary. I chose not to watch this after 3 episodes of the worst plot and acting I have seen in a long while. the FBI agents are even more incompetent than in The Following and that says something.
but even worse than the illogical actions of the grownups is the kids. The arrogant snottyness of the children actors (especially Minx) is just not possible to endure. They know it all because of the "imaginary friend" who told them to do stuff kids would normally not agree to do unless totally morons.
this could have been a great show, but it is no fun watching inobedient kids and incompetent agents.
