Son of God (2014)
Breath of fresh air
I must say this is thus far my most favourite cinematic adoption of the gospel. I have watched them all I believe and I love them all for the interesting perspectives they offer, often very true to the written words.
I will however say I was very pleasantly surprised by the breath of fresh air this brings. I was often surprised by the inclusion of parts of the story that is often neglected by other gospel adaptions, characters and dialog, and even the timing of the story is a bit different from the rest which kept me on my toes a bit and happy to see focus on bits that allowed me to reflect a second time and discover something new even.
I feel this might be what "the passion of the Christ" should have been like, a less visually bloody affair but not any less touching.
You should probably see it if you have not yet :)
Tian jiang xiong shi (2015)
Picture perfect story of a dream
I don't often review movies, and it is not my strength, though I felt the need to add my thoughts on this one.
Basically, this is a movie pushes that classic primal idea of good vs evil, but also how unity and diversity is what will give the upper hand. I found moments that were "cheesy" but were in such strong moments that I was emotionally engaged and touched instead of feeling manipulated. Very excellent choreography and fight scenes, the attention to costumes and surroundings were splendid, cgi and fx was well made and didn't take up too much space, and the actors were convincing.
This is a movie where I think you would benefit from keeping in mind the cultural and historical context in which this movie was made while watching, it's not only a movie. I like that the "cheese" was made in a way that none loose face and builds a respect and strikes the cord of the moral message it tries to convey. That in itself, gives me hope for a good and bright future between china and the west, if I may be so bold as to bring politics into this.
The story is kept at a good pace and never really drags on so as to become boring, there is constant development and as the story progressed to my surprise I actually cared for the main characters.
If all you want is a "jackie chan" fight+comedy then you may not like this as it's more "serious", but if you don't mind a bit of cheese once in a while and keep an open heart then grab a cold beer and this might strike a cord also in you.
Oh, and the soundtrack is really epic :)
Mammas pojkar (2012)
Heavy metal mommie's boys face trail by steel and fire
I think some people judge this movie from the wrong angle, and might expect too much. If you need to be fed with the same formula over and over this will not be for you.
If you enjoyed "Bröllopsfotografen", and you like heavy metal you will most likely enjoy this one too. The story of two 35 year old's who live in a small Swedish town, "worship" the band who "almost had a hit in the 80s" by the name of "Ludor". Two brothers whom takes crap from no one and makes a hell of an effort to be as hard, heavy, metal and "un-gay" as humanly possible. Two brothers who swear to avoid women for "they only seek to control men and force them into cuddling and speak baby speak/language to pets and make a mess of our music collection"; as far as they are willing to admit at least.
Incredibly spoiled they have few worries in life, until their carelessness leads them down a road that will harden their steel thru trials of fire!(!)
I found this movie charming and unexpectedly funny and with one of the best sound tracks in Swedish cinema in recent memory. Watch this with a loved one or friend and laugh at the situations before you.
It's not a masterpiece with layer upon layer of philosophical depth, but does everything have to be better than the last flick we saw for it to stir anything within us?.. Just watch it and don't let the low ratings scare you off!
