Mysteries of the Opposite Sex (2008)
funny story!
this is what happens when you decide you don't "Like" your blind date. At first you try to like them. Then you try to be civil. Then you give up and tell them honestly what you think of them. Then it becomes an argument. Finally you realize, your date is as arrogant as you are. True love! The film shows this in a short time. Miami looked great, what I could see of it. The director has a good eye for comedy. The actors are also great. The woman reminds me of Lucille Ball. The man is a typical womanizer but is likable. I saw this film at a festival that it won, here in Miami. The film was made in 24 hours and was done well despite the rush nature of the competition.
Quick Pick (2006)
clever little local comedy
this was a great first effort by will Vasquez.its a nice showcase for local south Florida comedic talent.bravo will, bravo! I enjoyed all the performances, especially the strippers. the film looked great. Shot on video, it looked more like film. The lead character Eddie, was lovable and likable enough. i thought the convenience store scene was funny.I also liked the gangsters chasing Eddie. The girls were all knock outs too. I liked the guy Rudy's girlfriend. she was cute.also the girl in the water. and he girl in the bed with the doctor.nice going Will! I also liked the old lady smoking weed. The guy playing the co worker was funny too. plus the boss was funny and the mailman.
The Curse of the Screaming Dead (1982)
it ain't easy to make magic
Its funny reading negative comments posted by some of the previous viewers of curse of the cannibal confederates, I never knew so many people were film critics and production experts.sure the movie is very poorly executed and production values are minimal at best, yes the lighting is abysmal and the acting is wooden and forced but its amazing how some people watch a b movie in order to judge or complain, what did you think it was? Titanic 2? I guess its fun to pick apart these things but some of the comments seem as lame as the production, do you really think the film would be more believable with weathered headstones or uniforms? sure it was annoying when the close up insert shots of an outdoor daytime scene were shot indoors with an unlit background that didn't match the daytime master shot, but thats show biz folks.sometimes these people make a comedy without knowing it...thats how you have to watch these things...just appreciate that those people worked days or weeks on this thing for little or no money and you get to enjoy their "cinema".so I say watch COTCC...for the heck of it
The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001)
Dying is easy, Comedy is hard
A director friend of mine gave me this DVD to watch as an example of what can get distributed with the right marketing.I just finished acting in his comedy feature film "Quick Pick",which will premiere at the Chicago Latino Film Festival,in May of this year.
Let me tell you all, making a feature film is a long arduous process and I commend anyone that sees it through to the finished product. However, this film illustrates how difficult comedy is, especially without an audience to gauge the funniness of a particular character or scene.
The first mistake made was having the director as one of the characters in the film. This makes it difficult for the director to see the big picture and adjust accordingly.(I am directing my first film short and have made the same mistake).
Secondly, having the actors deliver dialogue with the intent of being flat or bad,I believe was a mistake. This removed any trace of the actors "likeability" or "vulnerability"and both are needed to draw in the viewer, if the actors don't seem to care about the story why should the audience?Remember, the actors in Ed Woods films were acting their little hearts out...THAT was what was funny.
Also repetition can kill any scene in a movie, as can verbosity, just make your plot point and move on, otherwise the story stalls.
I did enjoy Brian Howe(?)as the 2nd scientist, he at least made an emotional connection with the dialogue and other characters in the story and showed some good comedic instincts.
The films look was great and the cinematography looked good, the direction just needed tweaking.I applaud the effort, though I couldn't sit through the entire film, I was fast forwarding a lot of the time...in the films defense, I do that with my own projects as well, fast forwarding to get to MY scenes...
anyways, keep doing what you do guys. Life without art is meaningless
The Dark Side of Midnight (1986)
The Creeper is...CREEPY!
The Dark Side of Midnight,I thought was great.Don't get me wrong it's not scary or gory but I still think it's great.I love low and no budget films where creativity is nonessential and there are no polished results.
Wes Olsen was awesome as the non charismatic detective Brock Johnson,I think this movie was the basis for CSI,as Brock was so scientific in his detecting and his dialogue recitation. The way he walks, talks and runs away from danger. And the ending is priceless!!
The Police Chief was great too, although he seemed to swallow a bit of the dialogue in each of his scenes.
The Lt. was awesome too, wasn't he the singer in jefferson starship?
The Mayor,what a great mustache!!
but then again even I had a mustache in 1984,please see this film, you wont regret it....too much,aj
Carlita's Secret (2004)
pretty good movie
How could I give this movie 10 stars?
=)...I WAS IN IT !!, sure thats a lame reason but how many movies have you been in?
In response to some of the comments posted to date-
This movie was shot on a very low budget, less than a quarter of a million dollars, in defense of the prod. co. they did double the budget from their previous effort,SENORITA JUSTICE(which was shot on video for about 100k)and shot CARLITA'S SECRET on film. I thank them for hiring me and for shooting here in Miami/Ft Laud.
We started with a decent script, good casting and a 3 week/18 day shooting schedule. That meant trying to shoot 5 pages of script per day (when most productions shoot 1-3 pages a day)with little room for delay or error...most of what you see in the movie are 1st or 2nd takes, once we got it,we moved on.
I think all 3 female leads were great, especially EVA LONGORIA,who is actually as nice a person as she is talented and beautiful, and the movie is entertaining in a "soap opera on crack" sort of way.All the local actors did great too.(totally my opinion) peace, andy sottilare
