Loosideu deurim (2017)
Much better than expected. Movie with twists and engaging till end.
Watched the movie after seeing the average reviews and ratings. So, the expectation was at the par while started the movie. But the movie was much better than I expected. It kept engaging with twists till the end. What else we need in a thriller movie. Sci-fic is a bonus. This movie definitely deserves a better rating that 6.
Actors did a very good job... CGI is done well. Lucid dream is a tricky concept to handle with logics, but the movie handled it very well. If you like a decent thriller with sci-fic touch.. watch it ignoring negative/average reviews... the movie won't disappoint you for sure...
Good Night (2023)
A movie worth watching and promoting
These type soft romantic family drama movies should get promoted and encouraged. A simple story line with very good acting and direction. A feel good movie. Lead actor Manikandan is a multitalented person.. Lead actress fitted very good for the character will definitely take a place in our hearts. The family setup, conversations, happenings... we won't feel like watching a movie, a neighbourhood happening or in our family. But, Yes.. you may find flaws here and there.. but who cares.. in an industry that produces movies like hero making a villain fly... showing rowdies as heroes.. this movie stands out make you feel good with near real life story.
Adbhutham (2021)
The Lake House - Exact Copy (Recreator)
This movie script is an exact copy of Sandra Bullock's movie "The Lake House" (2006) mixed with our own Indian spices for local audience. The director should have given some credits to the original movie.
The funny thing that I have noticed is, this movie had a comedy scene in which the hero character tease a music director as he always copies from other's music... the hero calls him 'recreator' instead of 'creator'... seriously! The director could have thought about himself in that character it seems.
The lead actors did a very good job, especially the female lead act was superb. The original movie storyline (The Lake House) was so good to the extent that I can rate this movie 6 though it is a copycat.
Natsu e no tobira - Kimi no iru mirai e - : The Door Into Summer (2021)
It was an 8+ rating material till the second cold sleep
I didn't know there was a novel book. The movie kept me engaged until the plot holes started showing up at the end...
1. Time travel: Soichiro travelled to the past, did some work and was going for cold sleep again... then what about the one actually from the past going for cold sleep. Won't they both turn-up in future and the other one going on a loop and brining more Soichiro in the future?
2. Cold Sleep: Riko went to cold sleep 10 years after Soichiro, how come both of them woke up at the same time? Is she not supposed to wake 10 years after he wakes up?
3. Funding: How professor Toi knew that Soichiro funded his research and The Guardian CEO knows Soichiro from the past already (before it even happened)...? This proves that, one of Soichiro's version is running on a time loop... then in that case, there must be multiple Soichiro turning up in the future (2025).
The movie lags behind highly on time travel logic and concepts.
The Fable (2019)
Unexpected Entertainer!!!
This was the second Japanese film I've watched after Rurouni Kenshin (series)... this one is a pure action/comedy entertainer. I was not expecting this out when I started this movie on Netflix.. Just enjoyed throughout. Simply storyline, but executed very well.
Sivakumarin Sabadham (2021)
Right story in wrong hands...
The plot is decent enough to give a good entertainer movie with some message to the society. But inconsistent direction, acting, mixed or confused comedy/sentimental tracks spoils every bit of the movie. I was expecting a decent watch movie from HHT, but this one is like coming from some amateur director. You will feel like the actors are narrating the emotions at places. Better avoid to save your precious time.
The Guilty (2021)
90 minutes of expressive story telling...
We read story books, then there are audio books, here is the visual audio book... If I was told I would be watching just one actor for 90 mins of the whole movie just narrating the story to me, I would have stopped watching it, but it didn't feel that bad watching Jake's acting with all that we need to imagine by what he is talking. Good acting. Everyone complains comparing its original version, I didn't know there was one, so with a blank expectation, this movie was a good one to watch. Thrilling elements are hard to add without visual effects... we got used to much of visual treats for years now from movies... so in that aspect, this movie lags behind - we are left with our own imagination of what's going on. The twist was little predictable... and, the sentimental ending was not connecting well emotionally with me... but Jake's acting made me feel little emotional for him though.
Overall watchable movie for Jake's acting.
Annabelle Sethupathi (2021)
Horror is when they showed there will be Part 2
How did VS and TP signed this? Seriously!!! In the era of webseries going with the standard of movies, this movie falls flat on the ground with substandard direction/writing/screenplay... failed on every bit. I was watching this hoping to get a moment to say.. yes I like it... but. Nope... I wasted the whole 2 hours. There were lot of moments where characters get engaged in a talk with no meaning, no connection to the previous action/scene and just to move the time - Definitely the dialogue writer had no idea what to do in those scenes. I miss you "Crazy Mohan".
2 stars - for the concept of VS talking Tamil and TP talking in English moments.
Storyline though is not so new... but decent enough to make a good horror or horror comedy movie... but they have clearly thrown it on the air.
Mr. Majnu (2019)
Geetha Govindham - Original is always the best
The director is so obsessed with "Geetha Govindham" screenplay and storyline that he even copy pasted few female lead song sequence actions where the female lead follows the male lead with lot of love with same typical moves. Its just that, "Geetha Goindham" story got finished in this movie in 1st half itself... then the director just reversed the same plot with male lead following female lead with lot of love to drag it.... but since its a repeat, it gets draaaagggged keeping the female lead saying NO... NO... NO... for the love for NO reason at all...
Like we see Cinderella storyline being repeated in different versions in different movies worldwide... "Geetha Govindham" storyline is just too good to watch it in different versions. But same like how the original Cinderalla movie is always a classic and can't be beaten... the original "Geetha Govindham" movie can't be remade in any different versions with any different actors. Original is always the best.
Dikkiloona (2021)
A Good one to watch...
Storyline as everyone says... is not so fresh. But, that doesn't make the movie going dull at any moment. Movie starts with no background details about the hero on why he is frustrated with his married life, what's their love story and no masala about time machine invention etc. In just about 15 mins we jump into the Time machine... and the story kick starts to tell you all the details as it moves on... so we don't need to keep things on head and match them with later incidents of the storyline. Guddos to the direction and screenplay for that.
Comedy track is decent enough. We still have Santhanam's counter dialogue comedy and all the co-actor did their part very well to keep you engaged with some smile on your face. But, this is not a comedy rollercoaster type movie though. However, that's not needed either, we have some time machine logics to focus on too. So comedy track is not too much and not too less. Good enough for the storyline and for the chosen actors.
About Santhanam: I like him from his Lollusaba times.. I was not so happy when he decided to move out of comedian roles to do Hero roles. But still wanted him to be successful as a Hero for his own good. But his movies become little stereotype, with him still doing his comedy along with hero track (as thats his strength and I still want him to do that though) but with lot of masala storylines. But, this movie is the first one I felt like he tried something new. His look is so fit to the character, and the acting is much better than his earlier ones. No mass hero type masala stuffs. He still did his comedy portion in the movie, but who will say NO for that. Good acting Santhanam.. Wish you all the success and keep going and rock the stage.
With time machine storyline, it is so easy to leave bunch of logic holes throughout... you may find some in this movie as well... but I would say the director managed to minimize the logical mistakes covering some of them with comedy track.
Overall, the movie is a decent one to watch. I enjoyed it.
Jagame Thandhiram (2021)
Illogical, Ignorant Movie. Dhanush alone has done his job.
I will try to put this review in points,
1. Why blame UK? Atleast I have seen well established Srilankan Tamil community there. So why not blame India first for not supporting Srilankan Tamils anytime in the past? What we have done to protect innocent Tamil people died in Srilanka? Nothing! We were just spectators... done nothing.
2. Why can't this director make a story of what we have done to them instead of blaming a foreign country for no reason?
3. Who told you all Tamils going to UK are illegal immigrants? UK is facing illegal immigrants, but watch their own documentary on how they struggle to manage them. There are no private jails for God's sake.
4. Does the director aware of any of UK laws, or UK culture, anything at all about GB? Do you know how Police react to any incident there?
5. Yes, they robbed us, ruled us for 300+ years, I hate them for it, that doesn't mean you can write false stories for your own sake illogically?
6. Current GB is a mix of people from different countries, there are Tamils, Chinese, Punjabis, Pakistanis, Africans etc etc.. There may be racist thoughts one or two here and there (I have seen none) , but there's nothing explicit you can see commonly around. (We are the worst with our caste issues here in India)
Overall, its just the director came with the idea to make money by using Srilankan Tamils sympathy (just like how there are movies with farmers sympathy). If you really care about Srilankan Tamils, talk about the real issues they face (Kannathil Muthamittal, friend of Vijay Sethupathi from Aandvan kattalai). Don't mix your commercial thoughts with Tamil sentiments.
Its only Dhanush managed the movie till the end. Otherwise, its just zero value movie.
BTW, How do you think it will feel if you stand outside with just Dhoti (veshti) and shirt during a snow fall?
Bride for Rent (2014)
Known plot.. But still a feel good movie!
A well known plot... but the charming of the main characters and light-hearted romance make you watch it though you know where the story goes.
Pros: Lead actors and their chemistry, light-hearted rom-com, the female lead character.
Cons: Acting of other characters were so animatic, but still ok, known plot.
It doesn't matter how many ways people have made Cinderella story, people still watch it that makes them feel good. So, known plot is not an issue here. Watch it just to be free from hectic time going around (writing in 2021). Btw, my first Filipino movie and it was good. Yeah!!! Isn't it amazing? Isn't it surprising? Isn't it exciting? ;-)
Mr. Robot (2015)
Psychological cyber rollercoaster - Don't miss it
The feel you get when you sit on a rollercoaster ride... start and move slowly before a deep fall and raise... then slowdown here and there... that's exactly the feel you get while watching Mr. Robot. You will feel its going slow in places with long dialogues but that's something needed because there is a deep fall coming (twist and turns) in the storyline.
Season 4 is epic. You could get the taste of it in Season 3 itself. First 2 seasons are to set the stage for last 2, but you won't be bored. There are few flaws here and there but doesn't matter like you may see characters responding to both Elliot and Mr. Robot looking at them separately when they are shown on screen physically standing in different locations (considering both are same personality supposed to be standing in same position for those characters). Like I said, it doesn't matter.
Technically, cyber attack/hack concepts were handled very nicely at the story level (dialogues, tools names, usage of technical terms etc were good, though debatable on security loop holes they were explaining/exploiting that are not exactly that easy in reality, but better than any of the webseries/movies I have seen so far)
Remember Disney's Inside Out...? for some reason, the last episode made me think about that for a while. Every one of us has multiple characters inbuilt which one we bring to front depends on the situation we are in. Elliot is no different.
Overall, this is one the best webseries to watch.
Mulan (2020)
You won't regret watching this... Nice movie.
Probably just for this instance ignore the bad reviews... not sure what went wrong with their expectations.. I kept ignoring this movie in my watchlist, but finally just wanted to start it for sometime and the movie kept me engaged through out and it turned out to be a good one. I used to watch Jackie chan's and Jet li's early days movies... so may be I got used to how a Chinese movie is like compared to a hollywood one. The story is all about gender equality. A woman is no less than a man. Even if you haven't heard of Mulan, its a very predictable story line. The movie has unnecessary fantasy stuffs like the witch character turning into bird, others etc.. but I still rated this movie 9 just because this movie deserves better than its current 5+ rating.
Ricos de Amor (2020)
Repeated plot with Abrupt Ending
The story is exactly like many other similar plotted films, the one I know dated back to 1958, an Indian Tamil-language comedy film "Sabaash Meena" - Same carefree rich hero avoiding responsibilities, get away from his dad, goes after his love as a poor family guy, swap his poor background friend in his place, confusions in climax etc, etc.. But coming to the execution, this movie did mostly same as others, but messed it up in climax... why the rush? what convinced the female lead character to forgive the male lead character? It would have taken another 5 minutes of the movie to show some scenes for the hero to convince his lover to get her back, but the movie ended abruptly without caring to tell audience why she was convinced to get back with the male lead.
The movie had fun moments, good acting, familiar story line, but with unconvincing finish.
Double Jeopardy (1999)
Whatever happens, she can still fight to get you back - A Mom
Yes, I agree, there were too many logical holes in the plot. But, I haven't thought about it while watching the movie. It just started popping up while recollecting the story line and events after the movie. But, does it matter? The movie kept me engaged, the lead characters did the job very well. And the whole idea of the female lead character was not revenge as the plot summary or other reviewers suggest, I believe its a story of a Mom finding her way back to her child after being thrown into a framed murder plot. Just simple as that. In that aspect, I liked this movie till the last scene.
Winter's Tale (2014)
Confused Genre - Which one it is???
Looking at the plot, I thought this is going to be a good Rom-fantasy, but the movie is completely into something else. I can't say its romantic (I liked the small romantic part though), but yes, it is fantasy as I can clearly see animatic character actions here and there plus daemon presence etc in the movie. I have no idea about the book version of story, if this is how it goes in the book, probably I may never read it. Cinematography is really good throughout. Logic is missing in places, I know you can't expect it in fantasy, but Russell character wanted Peter to be killed with knife in very start of the movie, but when he had a clear chance in later part of the movie, he just pushed him into a river without even a drop of blood injury made and expecting him to be dead!!!??? And the climax fight?? what was that? Probably I can picturize a better daemon fight if I am reading the book I think.
Its more of starting with some romantic, claiming fantasy throughout, a bit of religious, but goes with some common messages about Universe, Light, Daemon, Human, Life etc etc.. God knows what... So overall if you are looking for a good Romantic movie with fantasy touch, NO, STOP, this is not the one.
Passengers (2008)
Not so good trick as a story... had potentials in the start..
A good start of a storyline and later spoiled slowly till end. Watched it for Anne Hathway, she had done her part very well, but the movie just spoils everything towards the end. Its like, yeah... I can tell you anything I want in the name of story and in the end I would say "I tricked you"... that's not thriller. The storyline had potentials during start and lost it as the movie progress.
Love Action Drama (2019)
A bar effect - no story, nothing
I told my wife while watching this movie as a positive note "girls at the age of 17 to 25 should watch this movie, the director will definitely save the hero in the end for a happy ending, but girls should know how disgusting the heroic boys with alcoholic/smoking habits at that age falling in love and why they should not fall for their traps". Possibly in small percentage if this movie can change some of the girls decisions in reality, my 2 stars for that. Otherwise, about movie, you will feel like you are sitting in different bars all through the time. The ending not even justify any morality... just insulting women and their good wills.
Putham Pudhu Kaalai (2020)
And the Winner is.... Karthik Subbaraj!
In the segment of short films, he has a proven experience compared to others. The way the very first scene started in Miracle title, it made me think of another slow dialogue based short story following after watching 4 already. But, it just kick started in the very next scene and you can't miss any of the scenes, comedies etc. Nice link from first scene till end with short and sweet story line (little predictable though). Gudos to Karthik. Others were good, but not upto the mark. I can't say first 4 are story based, there's no story on them, just some piece of messages, couple of them may be subjective to some set of people. Probably Miracle story is kept in the end just to make sure viewers are happy while leaving.
Savaari (2020)
Supposed to be a regular romcom, but lost it with hero mannerism
On a positive note, lead hero character did his part well... Screenplay, cinematography were good... But on negative side, a regular storyline with yuck mannerism of hero character and zero chemistry of lead pairs spoils the whole movie. Supposed to be a soft romcom movie but ends with most predictable romance and no laugh comedy scripts. Again can't understand why the makers thought about that mannerism for hero character... Seriously! I understand, he lives in a slum area, but there are better ways to portrait the lead character with slum styles. Him, touching his b*u*tt all through the movie and then touch his face doing all other stuffs... seems to be intentional unwanted mannerism stuff pushed on to the hero character spoils the audience experience... could have been avoided. Minus that, atleast I would have tried enjoying the romance, but still can't say for sure. 3 stars for the Hero acting, the Horse, cinematography. Rest all take 0 stars.
Psycho (2020)
Terrible to watch and worst dialouges
Just because the title is psycho there is a serial killer in the movie who kills girls but for what? His so called flash back doesn't say anything relevant to that... And his character has no consistency.
Dialogues... I never expected a lady character to say such words on a tamil movie ever... And there's no reason for that female character to say such filthy words, it doesn't match to her appearance either. Just because you write dialogues literally in tamil saying as###le, f words, it won't make the movie to hollywood level. Learn to make movies with some sense for the people you're intended to. And just with a week of time with a psycho, the female lead gets soft corner for that psycho and talks for him in climax is worst to the core of illogical thinking to watch. Unless you leave your brain out somewhere safe to watch this movie, just stay away from this crap.
Thambi (2019)
A decent thriller with twists all around
An entertainment roller coaster of a thriller story with enough twists and turns till the end. I didn't expect anything from the movie in the name of Karthi or Jothika. Just started watching it as any movie on Netflix... and the movie did well till end. Its just that, unfortunately I read the "Parental Guidance" on IMDB before watching the movie which normally I do to watch with my kids, but that had a line of spoiler that made me guess the end twist a little earlier. So, please don't read it if you want to enjoy it through out and yes, there's nothing too much to worry to watch with Kids apart from the regular Indian movie fight violences and song glamours.
K-13 (2019)
Spoiled Climax
Everthing went well until the climax which confused the whole plot. Even the aftermath thought work cannot sync the climax with foretold story. Otherwise this movie can keep you engaged making you expect some turns and twists in the story till end, but you will find it only in editing and screenplay, not in the story.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
No review here... but please read it.. (No Spoiler Possible)
Yes, thats what I felt after finishing this movie.. No story movie, but watched it. And since no story here, no one can write a spoiler review for this movie. I tried to understand to my best, but failed and yes it may be good for 60s hollywood lovers with some added sugar at the end. DiCaprio acting was too good, Brad Pitt was very good as well and were the only watchable throughout till end. I was waiting for the story to begin till 15 mins to end... the story somehow kicked off to finish off. Oh... got it! Is it that "Rick Dalton" needed that 15 mins chaos to get to meet his neighbour? Thats all the story about? 161mins are too long for that. Anyways, watched it for DiCaprio and Brad Pitt and all the stars on my rating goes to them.
