Bo Burnham: what. (2013)
what?!
Bo Burnham found accidental fame after posting a couple comedy songs on YouTube. His first special "words, words, words" was a collection of pun heavy comedic songs which would have you laughing instantly and than hours later after the puns finally caught up with you. This special 'what' follows in his trade make style of quick and quirky comedic songs while this time being accompanied by an arrangement of lights and backing tracks. Burnham talks about religion, modern 'pop stars' and ask's questions we never knew we needed answers too.
This musical style of comedy is very quickly becoming my favourite genre. 10/10 glittery dick jokes.
Bo Burnham: Make Happy (2016)
You'll laugh, tear up and maybe even pee yourself a little.
Bo Burnham is a master of his craft. He isn't just a comedian he is an artist. Burnham tackles serious subjects in a way that makes you giggle like a little girl and than almost instantly cry on the inside. Make happy is Burnham's third live hour after Words, words, words and What. I honestly believe it to be his best work to date and although he has stated that he may be finished with touring he also said he will still involve himself in other comedic projects; which ever takes his fancy is my guess because whatever this kid touches turns into pure laughable, cry-able, enjoyable, memorable gold. Seriously, watching make happy will make you, well happy. 10/10
Room (2015)
A must see!!
I remember hearing about the book a long time ago but never got around to reading it.
This film is beautiful. A painful but inspiring story told from the eyes of a five year old boy who's been raised in a tiny room his whole life. His mother did the best she could with the tools she had. Allowing him to believe that the room was the whole world so he didn't know what he was missing. Until she decided enough was enough and creates a plan to escape. Amazing performers by both leading actors. You will cry, you will laugh and you will think about the small things in life a little differently after seeing this!
10/10 amazing.
We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011)
You need to see "we need to talk about Kevin"
I first bought the book out of interest after seeing the trailer for the movie. I was only half way though before the movie was released so I gave up and watched the movie before I finished.
Kevin is a disturbed young man whom has a difficult relationship with his mother and pretty much anyone he comes in contact with. One day he decides to trap a bunch of kids in the school gym and execute them Robin Hood style.
At first the use of flash backs were confusing and took me a little while to get that they were actually flash backs. The all over feel of the movie is intense and raw which aids in the telling of the story. You'll be pulled in all different directs throughout the story. To feel sorry for the mother or the parents of murdered kids. Over all a fantastic movie, well acted and written. 9/10
Cherry (2010)
An indie film you need to see
If your looking for an amazing indie film with great acting, story line and characters than STOP and watch cherry.
I first came across cherry when I was on a Kyle Gallner movie binge watching session. At first the trailer didn't excite me but I thought I'd give it a shot anyways.
Aaron is a young shy, nerdy kid going to collage. His pushy mother signs him up for his classes that although he is brilliant at doesn't particularly want to do. So he secretly swaps one for an art class where his whole world gets knocked upside down by a beautiful older women and her teenage daughter.
I love everything about this film. The quick dialogue, the characters, the fact that you don't even feel like your watching an indie film. You could watch Cherry 10 times over and you'll still laugh and cry like it was the first time. 10/10
Animal Factory (2000)
Not your average prison movie
Baby faced 21 year old Ron lands in jail on drugs charges. A few weeks into his time he approaches a prison veteran of 18 years named Earl. For some reason Ron brings out parental instincts in Earl and they become inseparable.
This isn't your average prison movie. Don't go into this expecting a lot of bloody fights or riots because that's fair from what you'll get. You'll get a few guys trying to unsuccessfully rape Ron thanks to the interference of earl. And maybe even a shower stabbing or two. But what you'll get is a story of friendship and understanding. Although I wish certain parts of the film where explored a lot more like learning about earls past I feel like it's a solid, well thought out and executed script with great characters, shout out to JAN Ron's cell mate.
For me it's a 9/10
Pecker (1998)
Cute and quirky
Great light hearted characters that each bring their own special style to the story. Pecker see's the world through his camera and one day unexpectably shares that with the world but not to everyone's liking. It's not like anything I've seen before but brings a certain familiar teenage coming of age feel to it. I most likely wouldn't go out of my way to purposely putting this one again but i would sit down and watch it if I flicked passed it on late night TV. The whole concept is good but does feel a little jumbled at times. If your looking for a light hearted comedy than i recommend giving pecker a go.
One of furlongs better films in that later of his career 7/10
