The Monster of Phantom Lake (2006)
Perfect!
Right on the money! Captures all the iconic greatness of 1950's "horror movies" including stilted acting, men in charge while women are perceived as hysterical, tacky costumes, leafy monster & scary location. However the ending is still a little bit of a surprise. One didn't expect the effort so one did not anticipate it!! Great fun. Enjoy!!
UHF (1989)
Best send up of the 1980's
Weird Al really nailed it. I wasn't a fan of his, but the high ratings urged me to see this. WOW! Clever script, quick, original plot premise, smart dialogue, perfect production value AND UPLIFTING! We all love to see the bad guy lose in the end. Poor Kevin McCarthy lost so bad I couldn't stop cheering! I am a 70 something female from the 60's generation! This was like reliving all the cool stuff from the 80's.
The King and the Chorus Girl (1937)
Drunken Royalty at Your Sevice
An x-king with one coping skill, booze, who is bored because the world isn't amusing any longer, is self centered, demanding & brutish in his treatment of everyone, especially women. I felt sorry for Joan Blondell & wanted to slap him often. He was neither charming or sweet as everyone kept insisting & certainly not husband material. I love all B movies from the 30's & 40's so I found this a disrespectful entry into the screwball comedy genre. It was difficult watching to the end but I kept hoping it would redeem itself. It did not. Bad script, power & position over courtesy & kindness with the silliest ending ever!
Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972)
Except for the funny music ....
If you like Hammer films, this is a good one. I partied thru late 60's& early 70's. The music was Simply made up, not jazz & not big band! Made me laugh. That part of period stuff is just ridiculous. If they dressed that way in London they sure missed the Woodstock look! However, l really enjoyed the film itself. Definitely horror with my 2 favs in the lead roles! When I watch the older horror films in ancient Eastern Europe I don't know how authentic that is but I can always see the film in any backdrop. give it a chance if it comes your way.
Men of the North (1930)
Gorgeous & Funny!
It's hard to remember that this was one of the First talkies because the camera work is spectacular! The snow slide was glorious! The love affair is sweet. Jealous girlfriend realistic. Accents aside, this is a fine entertainment flick even by today's standards. I've seen expensive productions that put me to sleep!! Not to forget that Roland is just so handsome! Enjoy
The Cat and the Canary (1927)
Compelling, suspensful & gorgeously filmed
The most creative silent with fabulous acting and incredible camera work. I even enjoyed this more than the Bob Hope version. And I loved that film. An original dark, haunted house film!! Seriously, the camera work is jaw dropping surprising. ENJOY!
One Body Too Many (1944)
Very Entertaining!
Totally enjoyable little romp thru an insane family's reading of the will!! Many favorite character actors from early films.
One Rainy Afternoon (1936)
Charming & Delightful Romance
This was wonderfully enjoyable! Men probably disagree since it is most definitely Woman's Movie!! The leading man is almost too handsome and then he smiles!! Wow! Plus, Ida Lupino is so young & gorgeous! I doubt the film maker was hoping for an Oscar but an offering of romance and comedy!! Why not!! It's perfect in that category!!
The Thief of Bagdad (1924)
WOW! Perfectly Extraordinary!
One of the most imaginative films ever. I could not stop watching! I am amazed this was made in 1924!! From a great script and marvelous acting to sets that defy the times, this film delivers one gorgeous surprise! Anyone who loves film needs to see this film. Douglas Fairbanks was a creative genius!!
