Extreme Sisters (2021)
They need to be in therapy not on TV
This show exploits people who have serious psychological issues. Putting them on TV enables their issues. They need to be in therapy.
Modern Marvels (1993)
New 2021 Adam Richman show
For 2021 the format changed to have live host Adam Richman. The focus is now less onactual information and all about Adam. It's now total crap. Bring back the old format.
Darcey & Stacey (2020)
Exploitation of women with esteem issues
For a reality show there isn't anything real about these two. They've had so much bad plastic surgery there isn't much left that's real. The only thing real about them is their low self esteem. There is a reason they are both still single at their age. I could never understand why they kept bringing Darcey back on 90 Day Fiance, but then they give her a show of her own? Such a train wreck.
American Beauty Star (2017)
Snooze fest
I have to completely disagree with the previous reviewer. This is a low budget copy of Project Runway. After three episodes, it is very milk toast. They only do quick shots of the finished hair and make-up. If they are truly going to copy Project Runway, they should have the models actually out on the runway in person during the critiques and deliberations, instead of showing the models' pictures for two seconds. Adriana Lima is a weak Heidi Klum wannabe. I find it really annoying when she calls the contestants "my beauties". She is so bland. The runway also looks low-budget. They definitely need a new set designer.
The Lifeguard (2013)
Takes on too much
Just watched the movie on late night TV. I thought the main plot point of the twenty-something needing to take a break to find herself was fine, but the movie tried to throw in too many subplots/story lines. The result is that it didn't properly explore any of them. Some of the subplots should have been eliminated so that the film could devote that time to development of the other subplots and the supporting characters.
I also didn't really understand why it was set in CT based on the plot but that could just be that I'm not a New Englander. I just couldn't relate.
The Great British Bake Off (2010)
Witty, informative reality competition
This show is a great reality show that keeps it interesting without manufactured drama. You end up caring for all of the bakers and want them all to do well. Mel and Sue make the show with their witty humor as the hosts. There is are also baking tips in the narration. For example, I now understand why bread needs to be kneaded and that gluten-free bread shouldn't be kneaded. There are also sidebars with baking history.
One disappointment was in season three. There was a challenge to make an "American pie", even though one of the judges professed to hating American style pies. There were British fruit pies in another episode though that seemed pretty similar to American fruit pies.
Wolf Hall (2015)
Monotone
This show has been very monotonous. None of the characters show any emotions other than boredom and depression. The occasional outburst of anger from the king are horribly overacted. There is nothing that makes you want to care about any of the characters. There is no character development and some characters come and go without any clear idea of who they are.
I'm also disappointed that most of the 9 or 10 star user reviews that I've read seem like they've been written by the producers of the show. They appear to be more promos of the show than actual reviews. Based on the time stamps, many look like they were written after the first episode, well before anyone would have a real sense of whether the series is actually any good.
