The Stepford Wives (2004)
I liked the movie but . . .
I liked the movie. I thought the jokes were good and the story was interesting. But the glaring plot hole is what finally gives this movie a failing mark. Are the people robots or chip-enhanced humans? I don't know and it made the ending confusing, when it wasn't supposed to be confusing.
I read that the people (mainly the wives) were supposed to be robots but test screenings showed that people wanted them to be human. And for that reason, reshoots had to happen and the editing was not careful to remove all traces of robots.
In the end, I have to give this a 4/10 - not my worst score ever because I still did stay to the end of the movie nor did I fall asleep during the movie.
Super Size Me (2004)
As a McDonald's employee, I'm lovin' this movie
As a movie fan, I thought this was a funny movie. Morgan broke up his McDonald's binge diet with interviews and other footage, including going into schools, surgery, and his medical exams.
But on a more personal level, I can't help but feel a little guilty. I'm overweight and I'm doing some of the things that the other McDonald's employees, in the movie, did. I still ask if you want to Super Size (or now we are supposed to say Upsize though I still say Super Size - whatever, just as long as suggestive sales are still happening), and I very seldomly ask if people want to switch the fries with a side salad, partially because I am lazy - I'm the one that makes the salads {side and bacon ranch} in our particular restaurant. I've done supersizing on kids who looked like they should be going outside and running around.
I really could identify with the Big Mac guy. He seemed to be relatively healthy and not terribly overweight. He eats the sandwiches and rarely eats the French Fries. I am like this as well. I eat a sandwich in my break, and a small Coke or Fruitopia, while I drink water throughout the rest of the shift, unless I really, really need a caffeine fix (hey, the pop is free so I can do whatever I choose). I never touch the fries, even though it would be so easy to eat a whole bunch every day. With just the sandwich as my lunch, and an afternoon snack of carrot sticks, a cheese slice, a couple chips, or a salad that I made at home (not a McDonald's salad - I already said that I'm lazy), my being on my feet during the shifts, and biking and walking to get around, I am gradually losing weight.
I also identified with the school lunches. When I went to university, I lived in a dorm where they provided the food for us, and we weren't allowed to have stuff like hot plates or microwaves in our rooms (fire regulations). I gained so much weight then. The food was awful. I made lunch my big meal because they tried harder to make it better because faculty would eat lunch there but not at supper because they went home by that time. Let me put it this way, the meatloaf was horrible but you ate it because there was no guarantee that the chicken was cooked properly, and steamed vegetables aren't supposed to be greasy.
All in all, this entertaining movie struck so many chords in my life. I think I'm going to take a super long bike ride tomorrow.
Corner Gas (2004)
A funny version of the truth
Well, this show has been renewed for a second season, and I couldn't be happier. We, from Saskatchewan, are proud of this show because it shows the way we live (exaggerated of course), and locals have been used for extras (a guy from the town next to my home town, but went to high school in my home town was an extra and had one line). The show doesn't make people from small towns look like retards or inbred freaks, but focuses on how we know everybody, and as a result, trust everybody.
I love the interactions that the town of Dog River had with Lacey, in the beginning. It was so true the way they were suspicious of the girl moving from the big city to this tiny town. But once she showed she was planning to stay in the town, they warmed up to her. This happened to my family when they moved to my home town. The town warmed up to my parents when they had me and my brother because they knew we were staying and not going to leave.
I also love Oscar, the old and senile man who is so easily controlled by his stable wife. Honestly, I know a few people like Oscar. I loved the episode where he kept winning the stuffed animals from the claw machine.
Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
The best part of the movie was. . .
The best part of the movie was when they kicked the football off the air carrier and lost it in the ocean, and shouted, "Wilson!" in reference to Tom Hank's "Cast Away." Too bad that was in the first ten minutes. The whole movie dragged on and on. I went to the expensive theater for this movie with friends and felt totally ripped off. I don't even think I would've gone to a second run theater for this movie. It was full of cliches and sub-par acting. "Black Hawk Down" was a much better war movie with better acting, more realism, and a more exciting plot.
Avoid this movie. It's really not that good. I don't plan on ever watching it again, even if it is a late night TV movie.
The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
Wow
Wow. That sucked. And yet you would think I would like parts of it. I love Star Wars and I love musicals. But it was just so bad. This show made "From Justin to Kelly" look like "Chicago." Ouch. And my downloaded copy didn't even have the TV commercials (which I understood was the best part). But I guess I'm glad I saw it because I can say I saw it. I recommend seeing this, but only with some friends, lots of beer and tequila, and pillows to throw at the screen.
Tummy Trouble (1989)
Tummy Trouble is why I haven't sold the tape
Ok, I own the Honey I Shrunk the Kids video. At the time of purchase, I would say that I keep video for Honey. But now that I've grown up and I am no longer a kid, I keep it for the Roger Rabbit short film. I also still pop in my Who Framed tape because of the maturity in some of the jokes.
Reading Rainbow (1983)
I loved this show
This was such a great show. I especially loved the story book time. I also really liked the showing how things are done.
I think my favorite of all the episodes would be visiting LeVar's other workplace - the set of Star Trek TNG in its first season. It was one of the first times that they actually showed how they did all the special effects (I only wish that they waited a couple more seasons to make this episode because they might've had some Borg makeup). Now, with DVDs, this episode is pointless, but I still don't care.
On a personal note, one of my friends briefly appeared in an episode. He was 6 (like me) at the time. It was the episode of the Library of Congress and he and his mom are seen running up the stairs. He told me that if he knew better, he would've gone over to LeVar because he would've met Geordi LaForge (but this was a year before TNG even started and there are still ST conventions). Yeah, we are both geeks at heart.
Hollywood Homicide (2003)
I haven't laughed this hard in a movie since . . .
I haven't laughed this hard in a movie since "My Big Fat Greek Wedding."
I loved the way they poked fun at showbiz and the media swarming like flies to get a story. I loved the way that our two cops had lives outside of work (real estate and yoga/show biz).
Not the greatest movie on earth, but it was good to laugh that hard.
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000)
This is the only show . . .
This is the only show that I can think of that makes science cool without being a kid's program like Bill Nye The Science Guy. That reason, alone, keeps me hooked. It also helps to have good characters and stories.
Black Sunday (1977)
When I suffer from insomnia, I pop this tape in
First things first, I have read (and own) this book and all of Thomas Harris' other novels (the ones about Hannibal Lector). In fact, I read the book in summer 2001. 9-11 happened, and it felt eerily familiar (because I read the book shortly before). I also owned SOTL, Hannibal and Manhunter on video. I have since purchased all the other videos (Black Sunday, and Red Dragon.)
I didn't know there was a Black Sunday movie until after I read the book and 9-11 happened, so I bought it so my Harris collection could be completed. Well, that said, I've only watched the video from start to finish once (not that I haven't tried other times). The video puts me to sleep every time. If I am the least bit tired or in my comfy chair, I'm out like a light.
The reason why it puts me to sleep is because they take every single detail from the book, yet don't put much hype into it. The conversations, of the plotting to set up the Goodyear blimp with plastique at Super Bowl, are very dry and the action seems like it is in slow motion all the time. That is the first half of the movie.
Then the second half of the movie is the game itself. Just because the setting is at the Super Bowl, doesn't mean that you are obligated to show everything that happens at the Super Bowl. They showed the crazy fans enter the stadium, the entire national anthem, it seemed like the whole football game itself (and yes I am a football fan), halftime show, etc. Sure, you can show some fans entering the stadium, and some plays but it was so much and it made the whole movie drag on forever.
By far, this is the worst movie that I own (and I own some bad ones). The only reason why I have it is to complete my collection of Harris.
From Justin to Kelly (2003)
Horrible movie and I did see it.
SPOILER ALERT
I love musicals, and opera, so I thought that I would enjoy the movie (realizing it is no Sound of Music, Chicago, or Moulin Rouge). Boy was I wrong. The story was so lame. It was trying to be a very cheap (yet the set looks expensive) knock-off of Grease without the emotional connection.
Here are the comparisons for Grease. Beach scene and hooking up and trying to hook up in both movies (though Grease was a full year and spent more time in school and KtoJ was a week of spring break).
Girl who is manipulative because of insecurities in both. Although Rizzo is a more complicated character than the blond Alexa who at the end of the movie said she was jealous because her girlfriends were hooking up and she wasn't and she doesn't want to be labelled "Party Girl" anymore.
I had issues with the movie. I was happy, in the beginning, when Kelly was chastising Justin for being an organizer of events that are similar to Girls Gone Wild but she quickly gave it up.
And the way that Kelly forgave Alexa (blond) almost instantly because Alexa told the whole truth to Justin allowing their relationship to continue really bothered me. People aren't supposed to manipulate (and she manipulated by setting up her own dates and text messaging her own messages on the phone) with other people's relationships. Offering advice or opinions is one thing but maliciously trying to break the relationship is another thing.
The sub-plots were pretty lame too. Kaya (black girl) hooking up with the waiter (Carlos? I think). And internet boy (Eddie? I think) was pretty lame (and I still liked him more than the other characters). The only time I kept laughing was when Officer Cutler (female cop) would keep fining Brandon? but I'm still not happy that they hooked up (even though we saw it coming a mile away).
Some of the dance sequences were nice and I did like some of the tunes but that is not going to save the show. The entering of the dance sequences seemed forced and out of place which made me feel uncomfortable watching the movie. (And I normally don't feel that way with musicals or opera).
So all in all, I think I'll give this movie about a 3/10. Don't spend money on it. It just isn't worth it.
