Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Revisiting the movie after 20 years and it still brrings so much emotion
I first watched Brokeback Mountain not long after it came out. It was mostly thanks to my curiosity and my big crush for Jake at that time after Donnie Darko. I was a teenager and not out at that time. I still remember having to watch in secret and rush, so I do not think I appreciated the movie in fullness, yet it still struck me with more emotions. It was 20 years ago, and I have not dared to watch the movie again (until today), yet some scenes have still been so vivid in my head (the one where they first consummate their relationship; the one where they met again after several years; and the ending scene with the shirt).
And watching Brokeback Mountain again today has struck me again with so much emotion; for the story and the characters of Jack and Ennis; for the sad realization that as one of them died in the story, Heath has passed away in real life too; and for my closet timid self of 20 years ago and how life has played out ever since, and especially in comparison with the timelapse in the movie.
This movie will always be among my top favorites; but I don't think I will watch it again anytime soon. Maybe after 20 more years then.
Bojwagwan (2019)
A decent but over-simplistic political drama
The first few episodes start out decently with just enough premise building, character introduction and a tad of intense battle of power. The writer seems to always pick the easy way out to every issue, though. Jang Tae Un faces an opponent, and so his witty move would be digging up dirt of that politician that somehow nobody else has found out before. Then Jang has the upper hand and wins whatever event of the episode. This same solution repeats throughout the series, and in one of the later episodes, Jang even has dirt against a dozen of them and take their support away from the Minister. Simply ridiculous.
Titans: Red Hood (2021)
Barbara is an awful person
She kept whining about Batman, mostly personally, and basically told him to stop being Batman. Yet when the city needs a vigilante, and Dick steps up, she takes time to keep on whining that Dick does not do as well a job as Batman. I can't stand her.
Great episode, otherwise.
The Good Place (2016)
Great first season then it declines
Season one is super enjoyable, with just enough quirk and humor. The characters are almost complete opposites, but somehow they are all built relatable. The show peaks with the season 1 finale, which really got me gasp for the revelation.
While the overall plot remains interesting, the dynamics of the 6 main characters do not feel the same anymore, and also there are quite some repetition. Overall, I'd give season 1 a 9, season 2 an 8, season 3 and 4 are both 7.
Fight Club (1999)
The film is much more beyond the twist!
I guess the twist would make it a wholesome experience, but I was spoiled before watching Fight Club so I already knew from the start about them being one.
I don't think it matters that much, though, because I still enjoyed the movie a whole lot. Also, the best parts for me are the beginning (where he narrated and commented on the help groups) and the ending minute (with him & Marla holding hands ).
The Prom (2020)
Stop casting Streep and Corden in musicals!
I agree with all the negative reviews here regarding the direction of this movie. The casts do not help at all.
I notice that Meryl Streep and James Corden have been cast in quite several of recent musicals (Into the Woods is another one with both), but honestly, they could have chosen more suitable leads. Their comedic acting is so cringe, but most horrid of all, their singing is AWFUL. Meryl delivers the worst performances in The Prom. I always fast forward her song sequences.
Jiok (2021)
NOT a monster fighting show!
Most of the low ratings for this series have the same comment on the "slow pacing" and "lack of action". I believe they were lured into series expecting a full-on action movie with lots of monster fighting sequences, and of course, they'd get disappointed.
Instead, Hellbound is simply a think-piece on mob psychology and social morality. It's about humans. Those demons are just decorative.
Yoo Ah In delivers a strong performance as the cult leader Jung Ji Sung, but I wish he has more screen time.
Kemono Jihen (2021)
Way darker than it seems - Underrated series!
The first season is quite short with only 12 episodes. The story so far serves mainly as an introduction to the the main cast, and the bigger plot only reveals itself at the season finale. Needless to say, I'm beyond looking forward to the next installments.
The main characters are mostly children, so I was misled into thinking Kemono Jihen is mostly an enjoyable action anime. It is indeed enjoyable, but the anime is dubiously suitable for children. While the show does not state directly, but mature audience watching will instantly understand the darker, adult elements between the lines.
Titans: Trigon (2019)
All the building up for nothing
I share the sentimental with most of the reviews here regarding Trigon. Such a letdown.
Also, what is the point of Rachel saving Dick (saying he's the key, but she ended Trigon by herself so easily) and calling for Jason Todd (he had literally no use)??? I'm so confused and frustrated.
The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
It's full of jump scares!
Story-telling-wise, there is nothing new. Even the "origin" story of the spirit feels kinda thin. However, I still find this movie entertaining and a lot of fun to watch. There are jump scares literally every ten minutes or so, and when it comes, it comes in succession. It'd keep you on edge on the time. One of the better ones in the Conjuring universe for sure!
Gone Girl (2014)
A good thriller filled with dark humor. Ben's acting is the highlight.
First thing first, I find Amy's plan and the general plot generally ridiculous and unconvincing. Thanks to Mr Fincher, though, and the way of his storytelling, the 2 and a half hours was blessed with an air of dark humor that make you enjoy it more as a thrilling drama rather than a thriller.
The movie is in a way refrained from any extreme expression of emotions or raw display of human nature, but it depicts so accurately the very base of what we want and what we want to believe.
To point it out, I do believe Nick and Amy are perfect for each other. Nick knows what Amy wants, and Amy oh so well knows that Nick wants.
The single most memorable scene for me was when just before the interview at their home, and Nick was frustrated because of Amy's manipulated pregnancy. Amy would say that she makes the best of Nick, and the only times in Nick's life that he escapes mediocrity is when he tries to impress her.
Oh, and I do love Ben more after this. His acting here is superb. He's not the dramatic type or the transformational type (like Meryl Streep). No, he doesn't transform into his character; he simply is his character. I'm honestly considering composing a 2000-word essay just on his acting in Gone Girl.
In summary...
THE GOOD STUFFS: David Fincher. Ben Affleck as Nick. Ben Affleck's penis. Margo - Nick's sister. Nick's smile. The storytelling. The dark humor. How to Manipulate the Crowd 101. The importance of being earnest. The ending.
THE BAD STUFFS: Ridiculous and unconvincing plot. The police (including FBI) are unbelievably incompetent. The first hour was quite mediocre, not unlike a very predictable case from Elementary (the TV show with modern Sherlock Holmes).
