Kenpuu Denki Berserk (1997)
Best anime out there.
Berserk 1997 is to me the best anime out there, it's pretty much a shame that Berserk 2016, 2017 and the "Golden Arc" movies are so bad.
It tells a compelling story mainly about 3 characters and how their relationship starts and evolves through time. The thing about Berserk is that all the characters, even secondary, support characters are very interesting and it's pleasing and exciting to watch them every moment you watch the show. It has a very unique way those relationships between characters is and evolves.
There's action, drama and some funny moments. I was completely stupefied while watching every episode. I had to read the manga after watching the show, which is also superb.
Don't listen to people who say the animation looks too old, this is traditional animation, they also use moving images in an amazing way to tell the story I've never seen done in any other anime or series.
The only "bad" thing about this is that it ends in a cliffhanger and the new seasons or adaptations are awful in every sense of the word. And that the manga isn't over yet, too many hiatuses.
In any case, I'd highly recommend this anime to anyone.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Not sure how this happened.
I'm not a big Ghost in the Shell fan, but I own the first manga and watched the 2 old movies, some of the animated series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I think the manga or the animated TV shows that are based on the manga is the best you can read or watch from Ghost in the Shell. The 1995 movie is a great film for its time, I enjoyed it, not a huge fan though. The sequel that came out in 2004 was a bit boring and slow, not bad though, every frame from that film looks great.
First things first, the movie's rhythm is very slow. That's not necessarily a problem, but the story is not very interesting and the shots aren't either. The original story from the manga had a completely different plot from the one on this movie. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but the plot now is all about the main character and not about hacking or even technology anymore, it's about the main character making bad choices and finding out who she is. The action is okay sometimes, but they have a dark scene where you have no clue of what's going on. Same problem with many action movies that come out often. And there's really only one good action scene in the film at the beginning.
In conclusion, they had a good script and plot and they just turned it into a pretty boring and uninteresting movie.
John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)
A pretty terrible script with some cool action scenes.
So, I was expecting this to be good. Many people say it's the best action movie for 2017 so far.
The main problem with this movie is the script, the dialogues are very bad. The characters don't talk much and say many "funny" short lines that may be a little funny the first time but then they are just awful.
The plot is quite uninteresting, and that would be okay for an action film like this, but some parts of the film last long periods of time and it generally has a very slow pacing which makes it boring since the story and characters are boring. Also the shots aren't anything special.
Some action scenes are dark and a little unclear to what's going on, just like many Hollywood movies. It's not a big problem, but since Keanu does a lot of the scenes, the choreography of the fights isn't a big deal, it does have some cool fights. Some shooting scenes are nice.
In conclusion, the action in the movie is nothing spectacular, the jokes are bad. And since it has long periods of time with no action and the crappy plot going on, it just becomes very boring and even tedious.
Beruseruku (2016)
An awful made anime from the way to tell the story to the animation..
Where should I start? I'm a big fan of Berserk, the 1997 show is my favorite anime ever. I've read the manga and I hope it ends someday, it's fantastic and well made in all aspects, except that it's been too long since it started.
This anime show not only has bad art and visuals generally, I could live with that. The music isn't really good. The way to tell the story in this anime is just poor, all they do is present important parts of the story quickly one after another without slowing down for a moment and having the characters talk to each other so you can get to know them a little more and understand what is really going on.
The planning and editing of this show is a very horrible thing, they have hundreds of shots every episode with cuts all the time. You can't even appreciate the fights because they cut every 1, 2 or 3 seconds in order to save themselves animation work.
And that gets me to the final thing, the animation. There are video games from Play Station 2 that have better character animation than this series. Everything is really poorly animated, in CGI you can't have the characters just frozen like in 2D. Every character in the show looks very stiff and doesn't move naturally.
You could compare this with anime like Knights of Sidonia or Ajin, those are really poorly animated also, just a little less. But at least those told the story in a more interesting way and take time to develop the characters and explain things.
In conclusion, I don't know how this came to be. The creator of Berserk had a lot to do with the 1997 anime dialogues, I can't really think he had anything to do with this because of the poor way the story is told.
The Jungle Book (2016)
From the point of view of an animator.
So, generally it's an entertaining movie with cool looking animals and scenarios. Watching Baloo sing "Bare necessities" again was pretty cool.
Now, I'm giving it a 6 because of the animals. Some animals look quite realistic, but some other don't. Why would they do that? Baloo doesn't look like a realistic bear at all, not saying that's bad, he looks pretty cool actually and has good acting. On the other side we have Bagheera and Shere Khan, now those two look realistic and without any sort of personality, the only good thing about them are the voices. But they look terrible next to Baloo.
Then we have some other characters like Raksha and Gray that look good-ish, not as good as Baloo, not as bad as Bagheera. And other secondary characters that look well. Then we have King Louie, they changed this character completely from the original one, that's not necessarily a bad thing. But he looks like a really huge though and angry animal that somehow starts to sing a happy song for a very short period of time, it's simply weird. The way he acts doesn't make a lot of sense.
And the elephants... they are simply elephants. Not a single thing is interesting about them.
Now, the problem with this is that some animals look very realistic, others don't, the ones that don't look that realistic look way better and are great to watch. It's a pretty terrible contrast in my opinion.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
I can't believe this has 8.5 in IMDb.
So, to start, I'm not a big Star Wars movies fan. I like the Star Wars universe and like Star Wars: KOTOR games. I've watched all movies though.
I was actually really excited because I believed that with a new Director and freedom from Disney to do whatever (changing the original story), they would make a great and interesting film, but...
It begins with new characters and starts off real well. But after a while, it's just the same old non-interesting story, but this time with terrible antagonists (not going to spoil anything). It's almost like watching episode IV all over again but with recent effects and new characters. They forced it too much to be like episode IV, V and VI, and the result is something terrible.
There are a few funny scenes or characters everyone talks about through internet memes, etc. but the movie in general is uninteresting and even tedious.
Dredd (2012)
The funniest action film I've watched in a while.
I'll start by saying, to me this was a great movie, not because of the story, the acting, effects nor anything else like that. It's great because it made me laugh a lot.
First of all, they don't really give a good explanation of what's going on in that futuristic sci-fi world. They give a very small intro with Judge Dredd explaining the world situation and chasing down bad guys. But I guess that's what they wanted to do, like an old school action film.
What I found extremely funny in this movie is, one, that Dredd is always making an angry face. Two, that the other main character who had "psychic powers" for some non explained reason; she says things that don't really get an explanation, like what she sees in Dredd.
Also, the dialogs and acting during all the movie that tries to be serious is simply hilarious and funny because of the angry face of Dredd, and because most of the bad characters seem to be high or not taking things seriously, that's also very funny.
In conclusion, I found it to be a great comedy film. Don't take the movie seriously if you're gonna watch it.
