Watchmen (2009)
Even a disappointment to a fan of comics and 300
First I have to say I love comic books. I read them my entire life and still do. In general I'm always interested in watching movies that are based on comic books. Since I really like the style of 300 I thought why not giving this movie a try and watch Watchmen?
This is what I have to say about the movie: The plot was interesting since it had a nice twist and turn of events. I didn't read the comic book from Alan Moore before because I wanted to be surprised by the plot. I was surprised but not in a good way...
Story: That said I criticize the way of telling the story. There are way too much diversions misleading the viewer from the main plot. After a while this turns out to be tiring and you get to feel the lengths of it. Zack Snyder seemed to feel the same way as he threw in some violence here and there. Perhaps to shake and wake you up anew. No prob with violence if it does make sense (like in the epic battle of 300 for example). But here it seemed really more to give the viewer a quick shock to stay focused.
Action parts: I like the quickness of the action scenes. It really remembers the camera movement from 300 and also the in-Action-Slow-Motion. So the action part looks good. I didn't enjoy the music in these scenes since the music takes a bit away the thrilling part of it. Watch the opening scene with the battle of the comedian to see what I mean.
Style: Hmmm here this really is a matter of taste. I didn't enjoy the costume design. Some but not all of them. It looked too much popcorn alike. I much more prefer the darker style like in Batman the dark night.
All in all it's not a bad movie but because of the mentioned points a was disappointed. So what is cool about it? I liked the casting. The actors fit their roles well. I also enjoyed the short action-scenes but be prepared there is not a lot of it in that movie... What else? Good camera-work and CGI as expected. My personal opinion 6/10
Tom yum goong (2005)
Not even for an Ong Bak fan
Where to begin? Well I'll start with the story. Story? Well there actually is one though they managed to make it much worse then Ong Bak's story. The story in Ong Bak was sort of okay. But this one...
OK, you don't watch this kind of film for a good story. But what matters is indeed the action and camera work. The action was very badly choreographed. Right in the first action scenes you can see Tony Jaa kicking around being worried about not to stumble over his own feet to keep his balance. I don't know how the director could let this happen with such a good action-star like Jaa. The rest of the fighting scenes look a bit better but are still far from the quality of the ones seen in Ong Bak.
Way too much slapstick action and quickly done moves. Sometimes the encounters try to take some Jackie Chan style for granted which fails because they lack the rhythm. Moreover I missed the Muay Thai fighting that we saw in Ong Bak. Very seldomly Jaa uses his elbows. More of really hastily done kicks and jumps which don't look great. In some takes you may think they ran out of ideas. Over and over you see the same bone breaking techniques again and again till you yawn.
Between the action scenes you see some bad jokes and poor story development. That is not what we want to see. Advice: If the story is the weak side of the movie then by all means don't stretch it!!!
Instead of spending money in flying boats and car chases which can't be up to the American level due to the budget, the bucks should have been spend to a good choreographer and a better director. Together this would have unlocked the full potential of Tony Jaa. Which IMHO is a real shooting star. One should only think about what a REAL director like John Woo would make out of this guy. (Remember Woo even managed to make Van Damme look good!)
I'm a huge action-movie fan and I gave Ong Bak a 10 but since the movie contained so many downs including nearly all the action scenes I rate it 4.5 and an extra point for Tony Jaas performance even if he can't save this mess.
Rating 5.5
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Highly overrated movie for kids
Oh my gosh- this movie is really totally overrated. I haven't read the books so I can only talk about the movie. First of all it looks like a children's tale which tries to have a bit from Lord of the Rings. It naturally fails completely. The characters are very flat and don't have any substance. The plot itself seemed to be a fast forward version of its original story. That's the only thing I can think of. I really doubt the books are that flat and badly written. As the film is moving very fast to the final battle it looses any bit of atmosphere that might have been created in the beginning. To see these kids swing around swords and fighting in a life or death battle is very dull. I could go some steps further but this would spoil the film. If there is something to spoil at all...
What might be interesting?
Nicely animated fantasy figures A story which is more for kids than adults Beware that there still exist some fighting scenes which may not be suitable for small kids.
Result:
As a movie for children I would give it a 5 but as an adult which has certain expectations of a fantasy movie I can only give it 3/10 points. Very disappointing.
Serenity (2005)
Not to be missed!
This is simply the sci-fi movie and the best movie I saw in 2005. The movie reflects what good movies are made of: Interesting plot, nice pace and fascinating characters. The characters in this movie are the heart and soul of this flick. Everyone of them has a good story to tell and is perfectly casted. The movie is a thrilling mixture of sci-fi, action, drama, comedy and soap opera. The director is able to provide us with a fine and understandable movie even for those who haven't seen the series. If you know the TV-Series Firefly you'll get some more details about the plot and the characters behavior's. But as said it is not required to enjoy a fun and thrilling ride on this one. My greatest wish would be that more movies likes this would be produced. Not the CGI-Blasting experiences that we have seen and grown tired of. No. This one has what other movies missed completely: It has a soul and has everything needed to fascinate every sci-fi fan out there. Watch, sit back and have fun!
My Rating 10/10
The Descent (2005)
Dumb and Dumber characters
I think that movie isn't too bad but there is way too much hype around that flick. What annoys me is what you already have read from the title I gave this comment. The characters are behaving like in usual horror movies: First do then think. Not the other way around. So often the stupidity of the girls made me laugh instead of having pity. That fact is really taking away the suspense.
The predators reminded me the reapers from Blade 2. They add what u need to produce an average horror movie. Some gory scenes like bones sticking out of the body and some flesh eating are used to frighten people.
So what's good? I liked the camera shots and sounds in this movie. You get some interesting angles and camera shots of the cave and at the beginning some nice nature scenes.
All in all you can watch this movie if you got nothing else at hand and if you do not have too high expectations.
5/10 Stars
Alfie (2004)
Really: The Worst Movie Of The Year
That movie was a huge disappointment. I mean the story wasn't the best so far. So I expected an easy, funny movie with perhaps some surprising moments but I didn't have high expectations. Well as it seems I could still be deceived. Why? Because the movie is entirely predictable. From the first scene to the last. Because after the first 10-15 min the story gets more and more boring. Because the character development is so cliché that it hurts. Because there is nothing more to watch for after the movie started up. Even the ending is a huge letdown. If u have time I mean even if you are completely bored don't watch it. Start re-arraging your room, sorting clothes or counting the tiles on the floor. But do not watch this movie unless you like being bored to death by a storyline that has been told in a much better way already a thousand times.
That movie has well merited 1(awful)/10 points.
National Treasure (2004)
below average
I didn't have great expectations when I was talked into
going to watch this film. But the film managed to still disappoint and fail me in every point. Well what do you expect from such a movie? 1.)Half way interesting characters (No since long time ago I do not expect another Indiana Jones cause there was only H. Ford to play him)
2.)Mildy interesting plot 3.)Good acting
1) Characters No one standing out. The character design is very boring.
Nothing deep or special to the guys. Even the bad guy isn't an interesting character.
2) Plot When I go into the cinema I don't want to see half of the movie been told about bad guy that chases the good guy. I want more mysteries more fascinating stuff about the main secret. And finally an answer that is satisfying and not so plump.
3) Acting Average performance of Nicholas Cage and the rest well ... No smart guys, nobody outstanding. Looks like "oh let us finish the job and move on to a more interesting movie"
Resume: The movie looses more and more credibility- I don't want to explain it here since it would spoil the movie- as the plot unfolds. Since there is no good storyline neither good acting this movie is not even worth the rent. And I have to say I really love the Indiana Movies. So basically I like the genre but not if it is wasted like in that movie...
1/10 awful
Lat sau san taam (1992)
This movie is hyped way too much...
First a lot of people hype that movie. Must be cool because everyone says so and since the director is John Woo it must be a "Mind blowing" movie. It can be seen a very early step into the action genre. John Woo had only a poor budget and the movie looks like it. Compare the camera shots and the effects to his later works like Face Off or MI2 and you know what I am talking about.
I really can't understand why everybody here says it the best action flic. I mean come on people jumping (literally) to the ground moments before they get shot, people dying before the explosion takes place and people dying without ever getting shot. The sound is very bad the camera motion is average and the stunts are average too.
I'm a big John Woo fan nowadays. As said before I liked the action of Hard Target, Face Off and MI:2. MI2 is a masterpiece of fighting choreography and camera-work. But this movie is only a b-movie. Sorry but there is no more about it. 5/10

Kill Bill: Vol. 2 (2004)
Much ado about nothing...
...is the title of a Shakespearian comedy. This movie reflects it. There's a lot of blabla but without any deeper meaning. It is Tarantino style dialogue which is meant to sound cool. The only problem is that there's too much of it. This movie lacks of everything the first movie had: Suspense, good action and interesting ideas like i.e. the anime part. On the other hand it has everything the first didn't need: Lots of gibberish dialogue which prolongs the movie endlessly. It all would have been a great 3 hour movie if u packed the first and second part together. If you get to rent the dvd I would recommend watching the deleted scene. This scene contains what everybody was waiting for and what Kill Bill Vol.2 should have been like.
I gave the first part a 10/10. The second part gets only 5/10. Mildly entertaining.

Aan: Men at Work (2004)
A shame for Indian movies
Though I like a lot Indian movies - I really was ashamed for the director of that one. Not only the story is boring but the movie is packed full of stolen action scenes.
If you know John Woo's MI-2 with Tom Cruise you know what I'm speaking of. Even the pigeon scenes were copied. The difference: If John Woo does such a thing it looks cool. It is a picture of art- in that movie it just looks ridiculous. But Woo's scenes are not the only ones copied badly - another one was directly taken from another great movie: Equilibrium
Have you ever seen a man shooting with his eyes closed?
Well watch it and you will laugh...
Summary: If you don't have the budget and a good director then don't try to make such a movie! Do another "Monsoon Wedding" which we liked a lot.

Noir (2001)
CRAPPY ENDING!
Very nice animation and interesting characters. BUT BEWARE VERY CRAPPY ENDING!
I WAS VERY Disappointed!
The n00b in the movie represented by the blonde girl from corsica replaces the professional Cloe in the end. Even if the daughter of Corsica lacks any talent to be comparable with Cloe. If u like good animated pictures with beautiful backgrounds, this serie might be for u. If you are not too much into realism you might appreciate the gun fights (girls are standing in the open shooting everything without getting shot at all...)
My overall rating for this would be 5/10
Bichunmoo (2000)
This movie looks like crap
I really agree with Luke on this. The cover said "Korea's response to Tiger and Dragon" Hmm I thought, well I didn't expect the movie really to be that good but perhaps it would be a nice movie to watch. I never thought I could be so wrong...
The plot is nothing extraordinary as it has been told a thousand times. Even the way this movie is told is boring. Well but maybe, just maybe the fighting scenes would be interesting? Wrong again! Badly choreographed scenes, people's body's seem to contain a lot of dust... OK I don't want to repeat what Luke already said but the action really suckz bad.
Overall this movie looks like some amateurs tried to play with the camera and picked up a storyline by watching another movie.
A little note to the director: Go and watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon or Hero and see how it is done properly.

Amores perros (2000)
wake me when it starts...
Before renting this movie I read the box cover. The cover said it would be something like pulp fiction. With different plots mixed together it sounded like a good idea. The only problem is: This social drama is really very slow and has nothing to do at all with pulp fiction and its great characters or Tarantinos brilliant story telling.
At about 48 minutes I realized my mind began traveling to more interesting things like getting another movie into the player more and more. The story isn't interesting at all and it is told in a boring way. The actors are ok but the characters they represent lack of interesting attributes and style.
Not worth seeing. My Rating: 1/10
Gin gwai (2002)
Another "I see dead people" movie
The movie takes the hell of a time to begin. And even after that it doesn't get any better. It has one or maybe 2 nice moments but most of the time I spend yawning at that movie. Why do people always try to copy? My advice: Leave that movie alone and rewatch Six Sense instead- it is much better through the entire plot, has awesome actors and a kickass ending. The eye is very far from that level
My Rating: 3/10
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Really boring...
Just don't bother. I thought I would see a movie with great supspense and action.
But it grows boring and terribly predictable after the interesting start. In the middle of the film you have a little social drama and all tension is lost because it slows down the speed. Towards the end the it gets better but not really great. I think the director took this movie just too serious. In such a kind of a movie even if u don't care about the plot at least you want some nice action. I nearly dozed off in the middle/main part of it. Rating 3/10.

Lost in Translation (2003)
A documentary is more entertaining...
Jesus! I can't believe this movie has been rated so high! The story is entirely boring, acting is ok locations are boring as well(and this in Japan!). A man in midlife crises, a woman with a wrecked relationship meet each other in Japan and try do to something entertaining together. Wow that's a plot! Yehaah! The dialogs are so boring that me and my girlfriend were bored after the first ten minutes or so. I thought it would be a comedy not a depressing drama after all. I wanted to see something more of the culture or learn something from that movie. But you do better and watch a documentary because this will be a lot more fun and thrilling. Guess what? You maybe even learn something from it.. Really bad movie I give 1/10 sry.
Freaky Friday (2003)
One of the best
If you like comedy, then you will love this one. Some of the finest acting I have seen so far. On both sides the daughter and Jamie Lee are doing a really good job. It a refreshing comedy for everybody bored of "Sex in the City" Style comedy. Thumbs up! 10/10
The Medallion (2003)
Great Action-Comedy
You just have to take the movie as is. Nicely done action scenes. Jackie Chan doesn't look a bit older and still kicks ass. Mr. Bad Guy we know from Warlock does a good job. The plot is allright if you keep in mind that it is a COMEDY. It has a little mystique touch and has more suspense to offer then movies like tombraider 2. Well done Jackie 7 of 10.
Underworld (2003)
Boring Gunfights in a dark movie
I personally like the dark style of that movie. What bored me was the loveless gunfights. And the missing suspense. It seems to me that this movie tries to mix Interview with a vampire with Blade. Well it doesn't succeed. Neither the characters and the plot are well developed nor the action scenes well choreographed ( apart of the end fight). And this for about 2 hours... If you have really nothing else to do and if you love dark movies then this might be for you. 5 of 10.
Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever (2002)
Crash Boom Bang
Boring Characters, stupid story and even the fighting scenes look bad. No explosions only do not make an interesting movie. Action is more than that. So back to the directors school Mr. Wych Kaosayananda. For wasting the time of great actors and my own by the way I can really give 1 of 10!
Kôkaku kidôtai (1995)
Simply the best anime
I have seen a lot of animes. But nothing, really nothing is comparable to this movie. And up to today there still no exists another anime of this quality. How I define Quality: The plot is dense, characters are fascinating and the animation is fantastic. Wonderful backgrounds give to the melodramatic action scenes the most intense impression. The music is an art for itself adding the tension to the atmosphere. If you still haven't seen it, watch it and you won't be dissapointed! 10/10!
Phone Booth (2002)
nice plot stupid characters
I agree that this is finally a movie without thousands of special effects. But the behavior of the cop and the woman is really stupid. The cop let his wife run around freely knowing that there is a sniper aiming at them. The woman doesn't tell the cop all the important details about the phone call when she arrives in place. etc...
Nice try but 4/10
Ritânâ (2002)
Another alien invasion movie
Starts with interesting characters and nicely done action. But after the first 10 Minutes the plot unfolds and the movie gets boring. The story is weak and for an action junkie there is not enough good action 2 or 3 scenes are well done though. 4/10
The Hunted (2003)
Another movie another crap
Interesting idea but only stolen from other movies. The start was well done but what unfolds is boring and stuff already seen a 100 times. Again a wasting of good actors. Nothing to recommend. 3/10
