127 Hours (2010)
127 Hours of excitement, adrenaline, regret, and awesome!
I LOVE this movie! OK, got that off my chest. Anyways, as I write this review, I'm listening to the song at the start of the movie, called "Never Hear Surf Music Again" by the Free Blood. Worth a listen, search it on you-tube. But anyway this was from beside the point of how much I love and recommend this movie to everyone living on planet Earth right now.
I saw the movie with high expectations and was disappointed that it wasn't over 2 hours long, but the movie made up for that because the pacing was good and it felt right. The intro to the movie is going to be on my top ten movie intros of all time, reaching in at number 1. For now. The song worked so well and naturally every song and score in this movie worked perfectly, even if it felt out of place at times, which also felt in place! At the same time! Like I said, I am listening to the intro song as I write this. It's so addicting! 127 Hours is the story of Aron Ralston's life-changing experience in 2003 which was news nationwide. He even won person of the year awards. But the story goes that he goes on this canyoning trip somewhere in Utah and while there, he meets two girls that he spends some time showing them around the place because they're lost. After they mingle and leave, he's invited to a party setup by them and he accepts. So he continues to trek for the rest of the day around Utah's beautiful rocky caves.
Unfortunately, one open gap leading down into a cave decides his fate for the next few, long, painful days. Aron decides to go on further between the narrow cave gap, and the rock he tested by stomping on it to see if it will fall, falls on him and sends him down the cave, making his arm stuck in the process. After he realizes he's screwed beyond belief he tries to make the best of it, tries to keep himself calm and tries not to think of the worst.
Given that he's an engineer, he tries to salvage as much water as possible to survive for the next 127 hours. The only thing he regrets the most? Not leaving a note (which he does now in real life). At the start of the movie, you can hear a phone ringing, and when it goes to voice message, it's his mother saying hi. So, he regrets not picking up the phone because he could have told his mother where he was going, and that would have been his salvation ultimately.
After realizing that mistake, the fun begins. He has visions of his past in his youth with his family and events that he thinks lead him to his unfortunate fate. But he tries not to go on the Karma route explanation because he doesn't believe in fate, neither do I. He believes that life is what you make of it, and so do I.
So, he does what he can to survive in this entrapment he's in for the next few days. As days pass by, he keeps on hoping and dreaming that he'll free himself, but all his attempts fail. He even has hallucinations of the freedoms he once enjoyed before being in the position he was in. It's like the director actually wants you to believe that there's no hope. But there is. He has a solution which failed before, but not again. He wants to cut off his arm to break free from the trap he's in.
Let me tell you, not a pretty scene to watch, but he cuts off his whole arm and breaks free from the grip. He eventually gets an emergency airlift and he is re-united with his family and friends once again. There is a brief cameo from the real Aron Ralston just after the end of the movie. This movie is what happened to the real Aron Ralston back in 2003 and that's why he won so many awards, because of the many obstacles he overcame at impossible odds that not many would sacrifice to get freedom the way he did.
And I can't help but think how awesome would it be if Chris Mccandless still lived today; what he would say to Aron Ralston, or better yet, to put them in a room together interviewing each other, becoming great friends and take a canyon trip and record their journey. It would be like two titans coming together, a meeting of the minds. If you don't know who Chris is, then please read the book "Into the Wild" or watch the movie, or do both.
Anyways, I now depart and hopefully you've enjoyed my thorough review of 127 hours. If you have not watched it, I insist you do watch it. Day 1 blu-ray buy for me, that's for sure!
Into the Wild (2007)
Probably one of the best movies I have ever seen this decade.
I don't know if anything else can top it. I mean, it's like I'm watching an Oscar performance and Planet Earth at the same time. This movie has some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Well, I am a sucker for beauty in nature and that's what really convinced me to finally see this movie.
Emile Hersch does a terrific acting job, and his character is believable all the way. You kind of hate him at first because you think he's selfish and immature for what he's doing, but as you go along, you kinda understand what he really wants. To enjoy life. He had this note on his diary of his travels saying "life was less hard when I was penniless" or something along the lines of that. I couldn't help but think that he's referring to his child-hood. And if he is, he is so right. Life was easy for all of us kids when we grew up.
I don't remember having to worry about the most serious disease, about paying the bank on time or about my future career. I had the best time of my life, but that innocence is taken away from us once we reach a certain age in our lives. Like his was. I bet that's one of the reasons he set out on his adventure.
Anyway, like I said, I'm a sucker for beautiful locations, this movie really set the tone. One of my favorite parts was when he met Wayne and helped around the wheat fields, was it? Anyway, I loved that whole segment because it reminds me of my home in Europe, we all had to do the same thing if we wanted to have food on our table, but then the sunset scene where the sky was a beautiful tint of pink, and purple with a little hint of red. I LIVE FOR THOSE MOMENTS! I truly do. We may go to war with each other because we don't agree with something, but at the end of the day after we've killed each other off, we can find peace in the beauty of what nature, or Earth has to offer. He wanted to escape in it. He didn't care about material things, he just wanted to get the most out of his life. I sometimes was wondering if he did it to put his pathetic parents to a test, to see how far they would go to find him. But instead, they stay home and wait for the authorities to do their jobs.
This movie is truly unforgettable to say the least. It's on my blu-ray buy list and I hope there are many more movies like this. Emile Hersch can act and Hollywood needs to give him way more roles and a lot of money, because he's one of the few younger actors who isn't talentless and has class. I also wish to give my condolences to the real Chris McCandless, who sacrificed everything in his life to get the full experience of life. This is not a movie about being nice to one another, or being a charity center, it's a movie about life, nature and how to get the most out of it. It's a movie about the meaning of life, and Chris McCandless truly discovered that. May he rest in peace.
The Expendables (2010)
This decades BEST action movie.
2010, the last year of the Y2K generation or decade. 2011 is the start of a new age, a new generation and a new decade into film and everything else.
You're not supposed to go to this movie expecting to be moved by the story or for the story to make you think. You're supposed to go to this movie and think "Yeah, I paid this much money to see a movie with kick-ass action and guns, I can't wait!". Sylvester Stallone has been known to make action movies and have roles in more than he can count. But this movie delivers 100 levels of high-octane action. You film geeks and critics can't grasp that fact. You expect a story, something to make you think. Well this movie does that. Everyone who lived through the 80's and 90's can re-collect their memories of Rambo, Predator and movies alike that had balls to the wall action and enjoy the old glory days. But you critics are something else. You obviously don't know the audience this movie is sold to. But you see, this movie made people think. When I saw some of the most bad-ass action scenes I thought to myself, wow, words can not describe the joygasm I am having watching this. F****** BADASS!. F*** YEAH!. That's why it did so well in the box office, but again you critics cannot grasp that. In fact, why are there official jobs for being a critic? They shouldn't be paid to write a few paragraphs. They should only be information sources people go to if they want spoilers or opinions, but unfortunately these low lives get paid to do that type of job. The world has gone upside down. It truly has.
But let's get back on track. This movie is for the action fanatic, for the kid in you that wants to spring back out and enjoy your old child-hood of what life was growing up in whatever decade you were a kid in. I was a 90's kid, but was born at the height of the 80's. In 1989 to be specific, so I didn't have the luxury to be hyped for the latest action movie from heavy hitting stars like Arnie or Sly. I instead grew up with their movies on VHS in the 90's, and to see that cast come back alive with some of my other favourite action stars was a dream come true. Seeing Arnie and Sly talk for just that 2 minutes alone was a dream come true. You know, I kept watching Last Action Hero and Demolition Man to lookout for how Arnie talks about Sly in that fictional T2 poster with Sly on the cover or how John Spartan goes to the future in Demolition Man to be informed by Sandra Bullock's character that Arnie IS the president. And funny thing is, he is in politics now and I think I've heard him wanting to run for that shot of the big man in the White House. But aside from those two movies, I ALWAYS, for as long as I can remember; have been wanting to see Arnie and Sly in one movie together, face to face and this movie does that for me.
I thank Sly for his contribution to the world for this amazing work of film. On such a low budget, he managed to make the 80's and early 90's come out in us, adults. He re-awakened our inner child, of what it meant to enjoy life before the expectations society has set out on you after you entered high-school and finished it. He made me feel like a kid again. I think I might just cry. 10 out of 10. You are the man, Stallone, you truly are.
Buffalo Soldiers (2001)
Buffalo Soldiers is an under-rated gem of the recent decade.
When I first saw this movie, I think it was after it came to DVD in late 2003 or early 2004. I really liked it and though I couldn't follow what it was about at the time, I decided to see it again today.
I still remember every scene, and what really drew me in was the atmosphere of the film, a black comedy, but also a movie about a lone wolf who's an anti-hero, the best anti-hero I've ever seen. This movie puts soldiers in Western Germany in 1989 just after the Cold War ended and the Berlin Wall was about to fall. What's amazing is that boredom gets the best of these soldiers, especially for our main character.
This film explores the life of a stationed drug dealer soldier and of course, not without some great humour. I will admit, I do hate indie films and indie directors, but this is the best indie film I have ever seen, it almost feels like a mainstream Hollywood movie, but in a good way. I absolutely love the time period and the location, it makes me feel like I'm at home in Romania.
It's really thanks to Jacquin and his amazing, under-rated acting that make me appreciate the anti-hero character he portrays. I like the setup of the story because to those bored soldiers, their duty is like serving time in prison, so they have to find good recreational activities to do so they can kill off their boredom, and what better way to do that than make drugs, steal weapons and sell them for a nice wad of cash.
This is one of those rare feel-good films that make you care about the character a lot, his struggles, and his fears. No matter how wrong you think what he's doing is, you still end up rooting for him in the end. Anti-Hero characters are always neutral, so they fight for their own cause. That may seem selfish, but in a world full of bad guys and good guys, the anti-hero must choose his own destiny and he'll let the good fight the evil as much as they want as long as neither get in his way.
Truly under-rated film of the decade, if you're from Europe, or are in the military, and you have some friends over at your house, then order some pizzas, some nachos, and enjoy this film. I sure did, and I sure need to read the book as well, which is much more darker than the movie, apparently. I don't know why this is not in the top 250, but it deserves a spot in the top 20's.
The Crazies (2010)
This movie proves that remakes or reboots are awesome!
I haven't seen the the original, nor do I want to watch it since it was made in the 70's with horrible production budget, but I wasn't too crazy about seeing this movie when it did come out either. However, I completely underestimated it. I finally got to watch it and although the plot is somewhat similar to that of 28 weeks later, it's a whole different movie on its own.
I liked it because of the realistic portrayal of the HAZMAT teams and military taking care of business, so to speak. Whatever the military were ordered to do here is actually standard protocol in real life. So, in the even of a situation like this happening in real life, these measures would be taken. And why not, with such a small town of just nearly 2000 people? The contractors and whoever is giving the orders sees past the morality issue here, as long as they can contain it without spreading, then those extreme measures must be taken.
The movie is great because it also reminds of me Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman and Donald Sutherland, which had the military bombing towns to make sure the virus is obliterated because of its airborne characteristics.
Tim Olyphant is a great actor and so is his female co-star who was amazing in the Silent Hill adaptation movie. The story is about a small town that gets infected by a disease that renders peoples mental state, "crazy". No thanks to government who manufactured it. This is actually a conspiracy theorists wet dream.
Anyways, some of the towns people get infected, they start killing anyone who isn't infected and the army comes in with their biological squad units to see if they can quarantine the people, some residents or infected residents decide to take matters into their own hands and cause havoc on the established medical camp the military has set up which in turn makes the military flee back for more updated orders.
The military come back to finish off every single resident of that town, including ones who escaped to nearby gas stations, hotels, and places of shelter. The survivors somehow find a way to get past them without getting killed, but when they try to escape with a truck to a city called "Cedar Point", the military decides to really finish off their original small town with a mini-nuke. The shock-wave from the nuke reaches the 18 wheeler and spins it on its back. The two main survivors still live, and walk their way to Cedar Point.
As they walk, they are continuously watched by a satellite view, just like in the beginning and the new orders are to contaminate Cedar Point since they assume the survivors already have contracted the disease from previous endeavours.
The movie ends on that note, and after a bit of credits a news report comes on confirming that the next huge cloud of smoke is an accidental fire, but we all know it's the nuke that wiped out the small town.
That's what I love about it, the seriousness of the situation the survivors are faced with. But try to not be too surprised by the actions of the military as they are following orders from someone they know nothing about and they're just as expandable as the civilians. This is standard protocol, so at least when this happens to any of us, it will be a quick death. Though, quarantines are ALWAYS the first step, and if nothing can be done to get rid of the infection and cure it, then the government will have no choice but to take quick measures and kill everyone, and evaporate the town off the map so that the airborne infection or any infection can be dealt with in one single blow. That way it doesn't spread nationwide, or worldwide and the media can make up a story for the deaths of however many people die.
The only question you can ask is why are people sick enough in their mind to manufacture a disease and test a town or city of people as guinea pigs. It's the higher ups you have to blame, not the military.
All in all, excellent movie, watch this and forget the original.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Iron Man 2 hits all the sweet spots, and it is GODLY.
When I first heard that Iron Man was being made into a movie, I didn't care much, but I still wanted to see it because of the action. I also chose to see it because Robert Downey Jr. was playing the role of Iron Man/Tony Stark. I've been a fan of Rob since Chaplin, that was truly a masterpiece, he can work the English accent perfectly. I always thought he was English because the first movie I saw with him was Natural Born Killers, but he was obviously Australian in that.
Anyways, I finished watching the movie and I was blown away by the sheer awesomeness of it. So, I chose to go back on my comic book hobby that I used to have 8 years ago. I first picked up on the World's Most Wanted storyline that is part of the Dark Reign event. I was hooked, so I decided that Iron Man is my new favourite Marvel hero, next to Blade, they're on the same level of epic. I read a famous story arc called "Extremis". I LOVED IT! I loved the dark tone to it, the virus created by Pharmlabs in Austin, Texas somehow slipped into some criminal's hands and he went haywire. Iron Man saved the day by taking the same dose of Extremis, he and the suit TRULY BECAME ONE, just like he says at the Senate conference in this movie. I won't say much because you'll love reading it, and it's really fun acting out the captions.
Anyways, the next storyline I'm reading is Civil War, it's interesting to see his position in all of it. I still have 74 issues to go. My point is, if you're an Iron Man fan like me, and if you read the comics (which REALLY helped) then you will consider this the best movie in move-making history. I certainly do, we will see how the Avengers can top this, but I know Iron Man 3 will top Iron Man 2.
Now, onto the movie. The intro starts off really well, with recordings from the ending of the first film where he announces that he is indeed Iron Man. It then cuts to Moscow, Russia where we get to see Whiplash's character intro. Truly sad to see the hand dealt to his father, Anton, apparently his father worked with Howard Stark, Tony Stark's father, and somewhere along the line, Howard took Anton's ideas and kicked him to the curb, in the Russian ghetto. Whiplash swore revenge on this, and let me just say the way the Monaco scene was setup was just AMAZING.
On top of the movie being awesome, it even added humour to it, just like in the last one. Happy Hogan gets more screen time and lines. We get to see more of Nick Fury and the sexy, and seductive, Black Widow just to put the cherry on top. Justin Hammer, rival competitor to Tony Stark and Stark Industries wants to conquer over Stark Industries with H.A.M.M.E.R. advanced weapons systems. But he knows that he can never get the praise and approval of the public like Tony gets. It triggers his ego to go haywire, he truly needs Tony to succeed with his company.
Moving on to the plot which is very well done and fantastic. This is a Marvel fan's wet dream come true. It combines the story lines of Armor Wars and Demon in a Bottle. Tony Stark's arc reactor is keeping him alive and killing him now, at the same time. He needs to come up with a solution and a new suit, which he does later in the course of the plot. This film is truly a masterpiece directed by none other than the prestigious Jon Favreau. Him and Robert are the DREAM TEAM as I like to call it.
The audience was cheering was laughter, enjoyment and praise. They gave it a standing ovation after the movie was over, a theatre full of joy. I must admit, I really do envy Robert Downey Jr. for the kind of man he is. He has been dealt with the hand of jail and he has had his own little demon in a bottle experience, but the got back up on top, along with Mickey Rourke and has been given a second chance, and he took it.
The acting was superb by all the cast members. The special effects and action had fans like myself drooling for more of it, just to appreciate the sheer beauty of it. I can guarantee you that this movie will make A LOT of money, maybe even over 1 billion and I hope it does because of the incredible hype it has received and well deserved too.
The movie has a special Captain America easter egg and a secret ending after the credits. So stay in your seats. The music was very well done and in the right moments.
Iron Man 2 gets my envy and full respect. This is truly the movie of the year, and possibly the decade until Iron Man 3 can top it off. People asked has the Dark Knight set standards too high for comic book movies? I'd say it didn't set them high enough, Iron Man 2 SURPASSES TDK in every way possible. This movie is godly. Rob and Jon are the dream team, never forget that people and Hollywood. They are the future of the movie industry. LONG LIVE IRON MAN!
P.S.
Oh and as of this year from May 6th to May 10th, you should all celebrate IRON MAN DAYS. On those four days, celebrate the great achievement Stan Lee and Jack Kirby has created.
Repo Men (2010)
A great sci-fi thriller, gives a new meaning to health care reform and the future
I have not seen the original, nor did I read the book and watch the 2008 horror musical. I don't like musicals anyways. Those should stay in theaters and not on the big screen.
Repo Men will become a cult classic, and an under-rated gem that will or will not do so well in theaters. But I assume it will do well since it's about health care, and many Americans can relate to this.
Repo Men takes us to the future, where part of the old society is a crumbling city, but the new metropolis is a growing one. In this type of world, the health care is premium, and it available to anyone who needs it. It does wonders than what a human organ can do. It can keep an extremely obese person without a heart attack for a lifetime, or cure diabetes. There is a catch though. It isn't exactly cheap. A liver can cost up to 600k and since the organ is a loan, it has a due date, like banks and anything with a contract. Once that due date is up and the person hasn't paid, he or she has 48 hours. If the money is not delivered by then, the repo men come to take the organ back.
They leave you with the option of having an ambulance come to keep you on life support, but your heart will NOT be replaced because you have a standing credit balance. You might as well accept that you will die. Of course, the system is controlled by a big corporation like most health insurance companies these days and they want your money, because that's all they care about. In this world, people are expandable, and as long as their payment is still not delivered, they are forced to donate their organ back to the labs for another buyer who has the money.
This movie delivers a great soundtrack and has a great intro and ending that will be remembered for a long time. This movie shows us that we could live in this type of future one day. The question is, when? 10/10 for and outstanding job well done.
Heavy Rain (2010)
A game of the year and the a top game for this decade!
Heavy Rain isn't your ordinary game, it's an intense, inter-active experience that guides you into four character's worlds. You have Ethan Cole, father of two, an architect who's living his American dream. You have Agent Jayden, an FBI investigator sent to investigate the latest killing of the Origami Killer. You have Madison Page, a journalist who disguises herself as a photographer to whomever she meets, all she wants is a little inside story on a victim's father about the Origami killer, and finally you have Scott Shelby, my favourite character. A private detective for hire who's out to get leads on the Origami killer and gets closer to the truth. I won't spoil it for you, because it had me by surprise, BIG TIME.
The story shifts around chapters and events with each of the four characters to balance it out. We each get a Point Of View of how the Origami killer has or is affecting their lives. Each chapter has a very depressing tone to it, it rains nearly every single time, and the skies are cloudy, always. The game takes place in the fall season, so it's no wonder why everything is depressing, but according to the investigation, that's when the Origami killer strikes. The Origami killer takes children between ages 8 and 10 every fall, and puts them under a grated pipe with a lock. He kills them by letting the rainwater fall on them till they suffocate. That's all I will tell you for now, the rest is up to you to find out.
Writer and Game Director of Heavy Rain, David Cage writes a phenomenal story that you'd expect to see it win Oscars and Golden Globes. He manages to make you a part of the story, to draw you in. His inter-active drama is about hitting the buttons at the right time, you miss one or two, it's game over for your character, but that doesn't mean your game ends, your story will pick up on to the next 3 available characters and so on. The game is rumoured to have up to 20 different endings, which means; depending on what you do in each chapter and event to your characters or the way you interact with the other non-playable characters in the game; it WILL effect your ending.
This game screams re-playability. Sometimes you wish you hadn't made a choice in one event and you want to go back, well, you can always restart from that chapter and it will erase all your progress that you are currently on, or play the game naturally to see one of the many endings this game presents you with. This game will revolutionize the gaming industry forever and it should. It should inspire other game developers to make you have a more thorough choice and consequence system. Some RPG's do that, but are they nearly as detailed as Heavy Rain? I think not. This game will win a few awards and will be nominated for game of the year 2010. It will win in the male and female voice acting department, because all the actors behind the mo-cap suit are under-rated actors. Especially Agent Jayden, I love his east coast accent, it makes him sound legit, he even looks the part too even though his mo-cap actor is fully European.
So, if you haven't purchased this game, then you're missing out on the game of the year and the game of the decade on a top 10 list. This remarkable game gets my 10/10 for originality, no movie can do this, because it would have to have many different versions of it. Harold and Kumar 2 has an inter-active feature similar to Heavy Rain if you rent the blu-ray, but nowhere near the depth of detail of Heavy Rain. But it does use the same concept, except without pressing timed buttons, just selecting what they will do next. It gets 10/10 for voice acting; some of the best voice acting I've seen so far in a video game, it's so believable as if they were real people. Like I said, Agent Jayden is an under-rated actor as well as the man behind Scott Shelby. Hopefully this game has shun a spotlight for them to act in Hollywood because they truly are gifted individuals. 10/10 for the concept. It plays like no other game has played before. You're taken in to the story and characters, the choices you make will affect the next set of events and ending. The button timers are also a plus to the events and actions your character is doing at the moment, whether it's life or DEATH.
Finally, the game gets a 10/10 for a masterpiece of a story. Even though you can change fates and endings, the background plot that connects everything is phenomenal! The game lets you discover who the Origami killer is on his own, and even if you can't figure it out, its revelation is nuts, it hits you real hard because you wouldn't believe that, that kinda person is the Origami killer. Like I said, I won't spoil, you MUST find this out on your own. It took me by surprise big time. The story makes you like the Origami killer before the character is revealed to be that killer, then when you find out. BAM! Big surprise, your face will literally change, your eyes will widen in awe and you'll say "holy sh*t, I can't believe I never saw this". But the important question this game/story asks us is: How far are you willing to go to protect the one you love? This game will makes you answer that, but also, think about it in real life. If something happened to the one you loved dearest, how far would you go to protect them?
Daybreakers (2009)
Gives every other vampire movie a run for its money
Except for the Blade series. They're equally on par with each other. I'm just amazed at the use of special effects with a 21 million dollar budget...the special effects look really great.
The movie is half original. David S. Goyer wanted to make the third blade movie based on this type of plot. Set in the future where the vampires have won and nearly every human is a vampire, but Blade has to find a cure to turn them back. I like how they took Goyers idea and made an everyday world like today into a vampire society. I just love that. The circumstances and social issues the new race faces with the loss of the human blood supply.
Very well done movie and some very well done acting. I applaud the directors and actors for this awesome movie. I hope to see a sequel for it. But I fear that it's such a limited release. It will either get canned or someone will sign on for the rights to make a crappy sequel or prequel spin-off straight to DVD. Smokin' Aces 2 is a great example.
The Book of Eli (2010)
The Book of rELIgion is pretty good
As an atheist, the only two things that bothered me in the movie was the fact that he would save humanity with the bible. I mean, he even said that the war with "the flash" was caused by religion. So why re-introduce it again? Because god told him to, that's just nonsense. It's Christian to think that way. Because a voice within you tells you, God guides you. So if god told you to blow up a community center, you would blindly do it? This film certainly proves that point.
I guess it's understandable for where he took the book, to a big library on Alcatraz island in San Fransisco, where they have all kinds of books on science and culture to remake civilization. I'm just saying, if religion caused the world to be in such circumstances, why make the same mistake again? The second thing that bothered me was the fact that Eli was blind throughout the whole movie. Somehow, he knew his way around a dead end in the middle of a bridge that is steep to death. I guess I should have noticed since he was wearing shades the whole time, which is pretty good how they all fooled us at the end where they reveal he's either blind in one eye, or both. Well, the book pages of the bible were the first revelation that he was blind. Brail language to be read with sensitive finger tips.
Interesting movie, great character development on Eli, and even the sexy Mila Kunis, and Gary Oldman is always gonna be a guaranteed 3-dimensional character, he pulls it off so nice. The action was great, felt like a Transporter movie meets Afro Samurai. Some comic relief in there too, which was a good laugh. Love the overall background of the world after the nuclear holocaust, the wasteland, the green sky is just beautiful. And whether you like it or not, some of this movie is definitely from the FALLOUT game..just the look and survival aspects of the movie, especially the line "people now would kill for what people would throw away back in the day" that's a given in a Fallout game. I'm not saying it's a rip-off, it's great! If it didn't have the religious factor added to it, I would have given it a 9.5-10 out of 10. If I was Eli, I would rewrite the book, and call it the book of Evolution & Logical Thinking. It would take moral and strategic thinking of everyday life plus evolution borrowing from Charles Darwin and Richard Dawkins, and god or Jesus, or religion would not be included in the book..no term, word or phrase would be written. People would learn and we would not cause the same mistake again.
Avatar (2009)
The new era of film begins with Avatar
I am still in awe. This film has surpassed the visual barriers. It is the marking the beginning of a new era in film. Why do I say that? Because it's done by James Cameron and after-all, he has surpassed technological barriers before with the release of Terminator 2 and Titanic in the 90's.
This movie has been in the making for over 15 years and it looks like it has paid off. James wanted to wait till technology got better, then he got his inspiration from Lord of the Rings. He took that inspiration and he perfected so that NO ONE will ever make a movie this good for a very long time, visually. He created the camera, the graphics, basically he created new technology and this opens SO MANY windows of opportunities for other film-makers in Hollywood. The next decade of sci-fi, or special effects driven films will look like Avatar thanks to James Camerons' technology.
Now to the story. This is such a beautiful tale of a man with a disability who befriends a different species outside of our solar system and respects their way of life. Now a lot of people compare this movie with "Dances With Wolves" but I have never seen that movie so I can't say anything and it seems that people love comparing films nowadays to feel like they deserve to have an opinion. Anyway, on with the story. After our main hero befriends the Na'vi populace, he has a change of heart and sides with them, the militia that has populated Pandora doesn't like this, they just want their materials and will kill anything in their path to have it.
The Na'vi are not a violent species unless they are pushed over the edge. The humans who inhabit the planet only want raw materials that sell for 20 million a kilo. A lot of other parasites have said that it makes fun of Americans and their way of life, of how they seek nothing else but to dominate everything in its path. I mean, isn't that true? They love doing that, and they have been doing that for the last 200 years. But this movie is not about that egotistical, and arrogant country, it's about the human species when it comes into contact with another species; we hunt them down if they don't co-operate or if they we think they're a nuisance, and on top of that, claim their land as ours. It's true though, we would do that if we wanted to colonize on another planet with another species. We would kill them. No wonder aliens don't visit us, we're f***ed up.
Anyways, I can't stress it more that you MUST see this movie. It's one of those movies you should see before you die. Even if it's your last day before you die because you have a critical disease or condition; you have to see this film. It will make your life and your death so worthwhile. You will die in awe. Definitely a blu-ray purchase in my books. 10/10 for a visual evolution, a breathtaking story and an outstanding experience in IMAX 3D..the way it was meant to be seen.
Ninja Assassin (2009)
After watching it, it makes you wanna become a badass
Coming in with a nice intro, this movie delivers on massive scales. You want action? You got it. You want blood and gore? You got it. You wanna awe in silence? You got it.
The director of V For Vendetta has proved his abilities yet again. His inspiration was Badlands and Ninja Scroll. Watching a few scenes near the end of this movie felt like an anime movie come to life in live action format. Seriously.
Now I'm not big on anime movies or TV shows, but it certainly reminds me of Ninja Scroll and Afro Samurai. You probably shouldn't take your parents or your girlfriend to see this. They'll get disgusted by the violence and probably talk a lot, which is very annoying for the rest of the crowd.
Here's what you should do. You should go and see it, make sure you've emptied your bladder reserves so you can enjoy every jaw dropping scene in this movie. Very nice movie, very nice choreography, and some good acting for Korean pop star, Rain. Apparently Megan Fox has a crush on him, but that's another story. You shouldn't miss out on this, you'll come back out feeling like a bad to the bone, badass. You'll even try doing a few mock moves when you're home alone. I bet you'll feel like taking some karate class after as well. I know I felt all those things after this movie.
All in all, a 10/10 for an original story, some very amazing action sequences, and the tone of the movie which literally feels and looks like a live action anime done very well. This movie makes Ong Bak look like a pussy.
Pandorum (2009)
Event Horizon meets Dead Space, they had a baby, and this is what came out.
First of all, the opening for this movie was amazing, I loved the graphics on the opening credits and end credits. Those were great.
Another beautiful thing about this movie is how it reminds me of the video game, Dead Space, and the 1997 movie, Event Horizon. It's like that video game and that movie had sex, Dead Space got pregnant, and their prodigy is this movie. All original, and very well done. Just imagine if you had Stanley Kubrick alive today, and he was called on this project, man it would be crazy.
I can't wait till I get it on blu-ray. The special effects were nice, the sound was even nicer, and Ben Foster has proved to me that he can act extremely well. I never liked the actor..or more importantly, the characters he plays. I always thought his characters were unstable, bi-polar sociopaths. In this one, he wasn't, he was the hero, but he had something cynical about him. It's thanks to this movie that I like the actor now. He's pretty badass. Dennis Quad was really great as well. I kinda wish he wasn't the bad guy because I was rooting for him, but he played his part very well. But for 40 million dollars, this movie had some great special effects and excellent sound editing, and again I say, for 40 million dollars. A sci-fi movie these days has to have a budget of 100 to 200 or more million dollars. 80 million at least. But this just proved that even with a small budget, you can do anything you want. The director has some very good budget management skills that's for sure.
So to conclude this review. It's a moderately paced action sci-fi with a twist to it, and if you loved dead space and event horizon, you'll love this movie even more. 10/10 for originality, acting, good use of budget on special effects, sound, and everything else. Hopefully this movie will get more appreciation on IMDb and everywhere else, because it deserves to be in the top 250.
Clerks (1994)
Some of the best Kevin Smith dialogue the 90's and this generation will experience.
Ahh, I remember working in a video store for co-op. It was Blockbuster Video, and I had the same type of customers that this movie had. Sure, I succumbed to the store policies and treated every customer equally, because god forbid for a clerk to be treated like any other human being, right? Well it was a good experience until they hired a new boss. Boy, was she an ass, and a Jewish one at that. But that's another story.
When I first watched this movie, I was cheesed that it was in black and white. But after seeing Jay appear on screen, I was hooked. Not only was the dialogue very detailed and odd, but it made real sense if you ever thought about it deep enough. The whole death star dialogue scene with the indie contractors. LOL, what a great way to sum up Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
This was a clever type of humour, almost a black comedy, but not quite. Thanks to this movie, It gave me inspiration into going to film school. Sure, I won't take the same career path by going to that over-priced film school in Vancouver, but I am going to Canada's greatest technical college at Sheridan. And it's all thanks to this movie, more or less. Well, really, it's thanks to the special feature dubbed "The Snowball Effect", which is a biography documentary about Kevin Smith, and how he came to fame, it's gonna help me with the report I do on him for Careers in Media.
I'd say this movie is a true cult classic. 20 years down the road, we'll still remember this movie and still laugh at the jokes in it. Why? Because we can all relate to these kind of experiences whether you work in retail or not, it's an everyday part of life. I bet that you talk to yourself sometimes when you think deep enough about the world or about one specific topic. You probably even have that kinda analytical conversation with a friend.
Gotta love Clerks. I hope to work with you someday, Kevin Smith. I would really love to do a comic book/video game movie with you based on a Star Wars tale. 10/10 for pure originality, dialogue and great amateur cinematography. You know some of you guys make fun of Kevin Smith, even on the show Entourage. But he's the one who set a standard to how an indie comedy should be made. He made a cult classic on a 30k budget. 30k! That's so little, but you can do anything with whatever you have. And I'm signing off.
Edge of Madness (2002)
It's been done before
Edge of Madness is a tale about a woman in the 1800's who gets hand-picked by dirty Scotsman who can't keep his penis in his pants. He just so happens to have a younger brother who is against rape and kills him, but continuously says it was an accident. This makes his wife go crazy, she gets delusional and she takes the fall because she loves George too much.
Like I said, this type of thing has been done before. This is just more "artistic" because it's Canadian and it's an indie production done on a low-budget with hardly known actors (except that one kid from Lassie, yea, he's in it). I dunno' whether this was going for Oscar bait, but it was sure as hell boring. And this is based on a 40 page short story. Half of that short story is incorporated into this flick, and I'm glad. Otherwise, I'd bore to death. Unfortunately, I had to watch it in my Media Fundamentals class, and I had an assignment on it. Read the short story and compare and contrast the flick to the story. BORING.
You know, it's harder to answer movie questions when you don't like the movie. Ah well, I hope this is the last type of assignment me and my class get. For what it's worth, Annie Herron was totally hot, she had a nice, soft ass and I liked the nude parts of her in the movie.
3/10 for boring, Oscar bait performance and graphic sexuality..plus nudity.
Law Abiding Citizen (2009)
This is probably the best drama/action/thriller I have ever seen in this decade...it deserves the IMDb top 10 spot
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!! I love this movie! I can't stress how amazing this movie was. It was so unpredictable the whole time. The judge office scene was amazing, I honestly did not expect that. It just adds to how badass Gerard Butler's character is, and how badass Gerard is in real life for being in this movie. This guy can not only do great comedies (the ugly truth), but he can do thrillers and action movies with flying colors (see 300).
Where do I start with this? Well first off, let me get this off my chest. If you decide not to see this movie just because you heard of it having gore in it, then you do not deserve to live. Simple as that really. You can't go on with your life without seeing this movie. I can only hope this movie wins an Oscar, but those only get saved for cheap Oscar bait movies like the reader and benjamin button, it's a shame the Oscars are so biased.
The movie starts off with the plot right off the bat at the intro. The cause and effect. The effect is what gerard butler is doing as his character to anyone who let those scumbag criminals get a free pass. You kinda' hate the Jamie Foxx character at first, but then you start to understand his reasons, but you still end up rooting for gerard butler's character till end credits. The ending is great, well executed. Many people compare this movie to the Dark Knight, and gerard butler's character to the joker. I can see why, and frankly, this movie is 5 times better than the dark knight.
I heard of kurt wimmer before, well only when I heard that he will be directing the metal gear solid movie, and now that I've seen this movie, I can't wait to see metal gear solid directed by him, he's PERFECT for that movie. This movie just proves that he can do action espionage action even more. This movie did kinda have action espionage in it, especially Gerard's character, he was trained in that field for whomever he was working for in the past. You can kinda notice it at the opening intro of the movie when he works on something.
All I gotta say is, he's still a hero no matter what he did in this movie. And very badass too. This guy makes the pulp fiction lead characters look like little school girls. I can only hope that whenever I become a successful Hollywood film-maker, I can reach a step close to this movie. This is the best movie I have seen so far in the first decade of the new millennium, I don't think anything else can take the cake. Now, I wait for the day when a movie is made to surpass this.
Not only is this movie badass, but it just proves that revenge is ALWAYS the answer and is very sweet and satisfying. If this happened to a family member of mine, my mother, I would go nuts! I'd kill everyone responsible for it. The lesson here is: Everyone is held accountable for what they do/did. Do not pass on this movie, seriously. This is certainly a blu-ray buy in my books. 10/10 for an amazing plot, an amazing acting performance, and an amazing director with fine directing and creative skills. I really hope to work with Kurt Wimmer some day. And if anyone on the crew of this movie is reading this review, I got some pretty good news for you guys, all the shows were sold out, it was full. I wish you good luck and I hope this movie takes the box office for this, and next month so that we can see more great movies from you, Kurt. I'm really looking forward to Metal Gear Solid.
Zombieland (2009)
One of the best comedies of this generation, and movies of 2009
F*****g awesome intro!!!. Amazing characters, fairly simple but FUN plot. Bill Murray shows up in it, and it's a funny scene after scene with him.
So where to begin the praise and envy I have for this movie? I really don't know because the movie is goddamn good. It's such a feel good movie that you just wanna see it again and again. I know I'm getting this for blue-ray when it comes out. I never felt so good after watching this movie. I literally walked out happy and full of life, it made me want to play fallout 3 on ps3, going on a killing spree shooting every feral ghoul I could find, like Tallahasse.
When I first saw the trailer, I knew it was going to be good, but I didn't expect it to be as good as I think it is now. I'm sorry if I keep repeating myself, but this movie is just what the movie industry needs. This is like the American sequel to Shaun of the Dead, which was an awesome movie as well, but Zombieland is much better.
It was slapstick humour, but VERY GOOD slapstick humour. That's what I call comedy. Glad this movie made the IMDb top 250, I think it deserves to be in the top 20 though, a spot under The Hangover. The narration by the lead actor was great, the character's personality is what you'd expect from today's kid. Not that it's a bad thing, I love keeping myself isolated so I can enjoy playing my video-games.
Woody Harleson was so great in this film, I personally think this is his best movie, ever. I know, people will argue that Natural Born Killers was his best. It was, until I saw this movie. And I never was that much of a fan of his. I always thought he was a weird guy in real life, but this character really suits him. The zombie-killing redneck who has nothing to lose because the very same thing that made zombieland killed his son, his only innocence in life. He was a devoted father, who after seeing his son die, became a devoted redneck killing machine.
It's great how this movie combines every human emotion at the right parts. Because the irony of it is that human life is great, what would the world be without humans ans just mindless zombies? I recommend this movie to anyone with a good sense of humour and people who are laid back and not up-stuck liberals. You probably shouldn't go with your kid to the movie, you should let him/her go by themselves. I'd probably recommend this movie to virtually anyone.
And finally, the bonus ending was LOL! Nonetheless, after watching this movie and walking out, you'll feel really good, you'll feel all types of good emotions. You're happy you spent money on this movie, you probably want to buy it on DVD or blue-ray, and/or you will see it again with someone who hasn't just because it's so good. This was truly the best 90 minutes of my life I've ever had. I hope this gets the cult classic title, and I think it will. A lot of people will remember this movie 10-20 years down the road, and we'll probably pop it in your video player or whatever technology exists out there in the future. This is the feel good movie of 2009, and I'd say it's in my top 5 movies of 2009, I hope this wins an Oscar, but it won't since Oscars are saved for Oscar bait movies like the reader and the curious case of Benjamin button. GO SEE IT, IF YOU DON'T....YOU HAVE NOT LIVED.
Gamer (2009)
Epic Win
Let me start off by saying that this movie is a DEFINITE blu-ray purchase in my books. Next to Transformers 2 and Terminator: Salvation.
I was so excited and anxious to see this movie, even with the pre-show rolling. Goddamn, this movie did not fail one bit. If you liked the Crank movies, you'll love this movie. The director manages to squeeze in his some Crank elements in the movie, especially with the nudity, fast-paced violence, and humour. I think this would of been a better big screen debut for him. Anyways, doesn't matter. What matters is that I loved it, and you will love it as well. BUT, if you're a gamer.
You obviously know what to expect from the trailer and the title of the movie, so being a gamer yourself makes this movie even better for you, just like it did for me. You may also choose to like the Sims or if you use Playstation Home on PS3, you'll also like this movie.
The way the director presents the gaming culture is spot-on, probably because he loves videogames as much as the next person. I mean, you could see how much he loves retro-gaming in Crank 2. So everything was spot-on.
What got me a little cheesed was that it was too short. I was hoping for a 2 hour or more movie, and although it was completely flawless in every aspect, it should of been longer.
But this movie doesn't have to limited to just the gamer demographic. Action and Sci-Fi fans can watch this as well and love it. If you're a fan of dystopian settings or big brother settings in films, you'll also like this. This movie kinda combines the matrix with metal gear solid VR missions and escape from new york.
A lot of people are saying this movie is basically "The Running Man" 2.0, but it's not. It seems like it, but it's not. Don't listen to that crap, those people who say that are probably cheapo's who can't afford a movie ticket and are very critical to others. That's probably why they analyze their life as we speak. You must see this movie, I insist that you do. And don't see at an AMC theatre, those are expensive. Go to Famous Players Cineplex theatres, they're certainly much cheaper.
The visual effects were awesome and on par with Iron-Man and Transformers 2. The feel and setting of that big brother state where the world bids on living and breathing players to win their matches is amazing. It's like a big corporation controls the world, but it's really one guy who's got the world tuned in to his games, he's got everyone who loves games and television hooked on his newest live action game, "Slayers" . His ratings are up, and he's far richer than Bill Gates, overnight. The prison in the movie is also under strict martial law, so with all that combined, it's no telling how close humanity really is to virtual reality. Hell, it's possible, it just needs more funding and attention.
So stop whatever you're doing, and go see this movie. After that, turn on your game console or PC computer and play Call of Duty 4, Killzone 2, or if you're in the MAG beta, play that. I know this movie had that effect on me. One other little tiny flaw this movie had was Ludicrous, I couldn't stand him, especially when he says "we're all slaves man" . How much did he get paid for that line? I swear it sounds so pre-prepared and scripted. I wonder is Rev. Jesse Jackson had anything to do with it. It's kinda obvious why he would say such a line, but I won't point out the irony there.
So go see it, you won't regret it.
The Final Destination (2009)
I never knew death could be so comical and hilarious
I was excited to go see this movie in 3D. I was a little cheesed that it was only 1 hour and 14 minutes, but whaddaya expect, after the third movie, I think it was going downhill from there.
Anyways, I did like the 3D aspect of the movie, the pieces of metal and sharp objects, plus blood and guts flying at you were a nice addition. The end credits and the intro credits had some nice 3D animation as well that literally popped in your face. If this movie wasn't made in 3D, it wouldn't even get a wide release or a theater release at all.
The acting was mediocre, you could see the lead star in some scenes struggling to try and assess the situation with emotions and facial expressions and tones of voice, wasn't doing so well, it looked like he was almost trying hard to act.
And it's funny how most of the cast females in this movie were all extremely sexy femme fatales. What can I say, cliché to the max. But they did add one new thing that I was happy about. Comic humor. They finally made death more funnier. I loved the comical jokes from their jock friend in the group of the cast. He was this cocky guy with a sense of humor who didn't really care what was going on around him, until he got his death wish. Then you have the security guard who jokes about suicide. Yeah, that kept me watching it.
The deaths were a little more creative and much more gorier. The premise and story were exactly the same like the last 3 movies. Group of teens go to an event or place, one of them can see the future of death. They try to stop it, they think they succeed, then they don't. That routine goes on for about 4 times in the movie till they clearly know that it's not happening anymore and they can live a normal life. .................
BUT, there's always that one scene near the end where the lead role looks at the paper he/she is reading, and scans the environment with their eyes. He/she thinks they see another death, and bam, an object comes at he/she and the remaining survivors and kills them. The End.
6/10
Pros: Comical, funny humor and lines It's in 3D the whole time through A little more creative on the deaths Hot female actors
Cons: Same ol' storyline and premise Same ending Mediocre acting to the point where it's noticeable Too short Little to no nudity
Horror fans who love gore will love this flick, it was worth my money. Good popcorn flick, and it's in 3D!
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)
Fun popcorn flick, but that's all it's got going for it. The Baroness has a nice rack.
First let me start off by saying a quote from the movie. "Oh my gosh" . I tried hard not to laugh out loud when they said that. Seriously, it just slows down the plasma bullet going for the chopper, then right before their deaths, the one pilot has to say "oh my gosh" . Oh, what a good laugh I had.
Also, the irish accent of the bad guy was pretty funny too, because what kinda badass has such a funny irish accent like that? I couldn't take him seriously, at all.
Well, it's a good popcorn flick for the summer, T4 and Trans2 was much better than this action frenzy of a film, but it was nice, worth my money. Sierra Miller never looked so hot before, I think I had an orgasm when I saw her in that sexy latex suit and those sexy glasses. Adding Marlon Wayans to the film was good for comic relief, I kinda liked the movie for that. Channing Tatum still remains to be a homo actor in my eyes. The whole ebonics accent was killing it, seriously. They should of got Arnie or Stallone to play GI JOE. So the first flaw to me was the horrible CGI. You could notice it at the first few minutes of the movie. The choppers flying by, were all CGI, and pretty bad too. Looked like it came straight from a next-gen video game cut scene. The second flaw was the cheesy lines like "knowing is half the battle" . I know it's iconic and all, but you know you're never gonna make the movie as accurate as the TV show or comics, might as well leave that crappy line out. Another flaw was that they didn't have any nude scenes for Sienna Miller, she should of stripped naked just for my viewing pleasure.
Well that's it, doubt that I'll be watching it again or even renting it on blu-ray, but it was worth it for Sienna Miller and her nice rack.
Brüno (2009)
Calling it "nasty" is just an understatement.
This movie pushes far beyond the borders of nasty, and goes into disgusting, but very funny. The intro was hilarious, the one where they show borat and his young Asian lover doing some messed up things, creative, but messed up. Still, I died laughing at that part, and through the rest of the movie.
This movie is certainly more shocking than Borat. I mean, Ron Paul being interviewed by Bruno? Or Bruno trying to interview Harrison Ford, it's nuts. I don't know how he pulled it off, but Sasha never fails to disappoint. I'm surprised I could sit through this, me being a homophobe and all. But in reality, the real guy behind Borat, Ali G, and Bruno is straight, and has a wife, Isla Fisher, who was in Wedding Crashers as the horny virgin. Don't see this movie if you're easily offended. I was somewhat offended when those redkneck trash killed that animal, I hope that part was scripted and the animal was full of cotton. Anyway, go see it if you like reality comedy. Real people, real reactions, and real idiots. Do not take your kid to this movie, also, bring ID with you, they asked me for ID, and this was a first considering that I've been to other R-rated movies.
Overall, 8/10 for reality comedy. It doesn't get a 10 because it was only 87 minutes long. I was hoping it to be 2 hours, but I guess the blu-ray/DVD will have deleted scenes and packed with features. Go see it, you'll laugh hard.
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire (1996)
The story that was supposed to be a film without the film.
Let me start off and say that I'm a huge Star Wars fan. This game delivered on all levels of fun. I was just a kid when I got into Star Wars, and when I saw this game at the rental store, I had to get it.
I played it through and thought it was the best game ever made, and I still do think that it is the best game ever made. At the time, I didn't know what to expect with it other than I was excited to boot up my N64 console and play this beauty. And, it starts off with my favorite Star Wars scene and battle. The Battle of Hoth. I didn't know it was a flying mission, but I was just that excited because I was getting into Star Wars.
I played through the whole and noticed how much variety it had. You'd get flying missions, walking missions, and even a speeder race mission. Keep in mind, that was the very first segment of a speeder race, before episode 1 racer.
I was pretty sad at the ending of the game because I liked the character of Dash Rendar, he was like Han Solo, and I kinda looked up to him as a cool Star Wars hero.
This game gets a 10 out of 10 for originality and variety. It was far ahead of any Star Wars title in that decade. Sure, it's not entirely faithful to the book or the comic, but what video-game adaptation is? If you wanna' sit down and complain about that, then go read the books. I've the read the books as well, phenomenal books. I like the 120 page comic book better. It still maintains to keep the original plot, but from a different character perspective. You have the Shadows plot from Boba Fett's point of view. Just like the game, you also have the original plot, but through Dash Rendars perspective.
This could of made an excellent movie, but instead, it had its success through a toyline, a comic book line, a best selling book line and through a video game. The multi-media project that was a film without the film.
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
The best comedy of 2006 and for 2007.
Why for 2007? because there wasn't anything funnier than Borat up until Step Brothers.
Borat combines real comedy with real people and real reactions. I mean he's no stranger in most of Europe. He does make a show called "Da Ali G Show" which features his 3 characters, Ali G: An idiotic wanna-be "gangster" who tries to impersonate the lifestyle of a gang banger, with very little intelligence, but still very funny. Bruno, a homosexual fashion critic who's Austrian and loves gossip. Borat, a immigrant to other countries, comes from Khazakstan, and pretends to act like a complete tool in his interviews by acting the way he was raised in his country with his traditional customs.
They all have three films too, for each character. Well, Bruno is a few days away from release. But his Borat character is probably the best one, ever.
He travels to U.S. "and" A to make a documentary about American customs and culture to "make benefit of Khazakstan" . He looks on his TV one night and notices his love of his life, Pamela Anderson playing the lovely Baywatch babe, CJ. He sets his journey to find this woman and make "explosion on her stomach" after marrying her. Throughout the journey, he continues his documentary in many of the famous states in America such as Texas and Atlanta, but ultimately stopping at California to meet Pamela Anderson.
In his journey, he interviews real people, real American citizens who have an opinion or two about Borat or his and their idealistic views of class, race, pride, and women. The reason this is so funny is because of the reactions of people being filmed. They just don't know what to do in those situations, so they try to defuse it with their emotions and facial gestures.
A few shows or clips on the internet have done this sort of thing, but it was all scripted, and most of it came from MTV. So, wherever there's a scripted reality show, there's MTV. The movie exploits Borat's findings in America. One of the funniest parts was the church convention. You'd see these crazy Christians on stage hollering about Jesus saving a troubled person by shouting out all sorts of gibberish that you'd hear from a mental patient in the hospital. So, I guess in a way, this film does exploit some of America's hidden and outrageous culture, and does a very good job at it.
After the movie, a few people wanted to sue the film-makers for lying to them about what the project was really about. I can understand why they're mad. Maybe they should of thought of that before saying something stupid on camera. A few people in Romania, my home country were pretty angry about the film, saying it exploited them in a very bad way. It did, but there's no reason why they should sue. This movie gets a solid 10/10 for pure comedy realism. Go get this on DVD if you haven't. I can still watch this film over again and have even more laughs than before.
Fanboys (2009)
"It was never about the movie, it was about us"
Indeed it was. It was about the fans of Star Wars, this film was practically made for Star Wars fans. It's such a shame that this movie didn't get a wider release across North America..a 6 million dollar budget and only got 760k in gross revenue.
The director, Kyle Newman is clearly a Star Wars fan and he knew what he was making. Ever since I saw the trailer for this movie on the Clerks 2 DVD, I knew I was dead set on seeing this since day one. So I waited, and I waited, and I waited and, well, you get the point. The day finally came for me to see the movie. But not in theaters, I waited for it to come to blue-ray.
I felt really good after watching it. I was in such a great mood because of this film. I expected it to be funnier because it's a 2006 film that had so many re-adjustments to the script, but I can understand where the director was going with this film.
I had a good laugh at all the Star Wars one-liner references to the original trilogy, and I never knew about Harry Knowles, but it is true, he really is a major fan. Apparently, this plot of stealing the rough cut of The Phantom Menace is referenced to Harry Knowles at Aintitcoolnews.com for stealing the actual rough cut of Star Wars and posting it on his website. If he did that, then shame on you Harry, you're a thief, I hope your website gets shutdown for good one day.
Fanboys had one little flaw, Seth Rogen playing the southern accent p/imp who also happens to be a Star Wars fan. His character was really annoying in the hotel scene. But Kirsten Bell, that hot beauty makes up for his parts, we get to see her behind. He did play the "Trekkie" part very well though. It was spot-on. I'm sure Trekkies all over are pretty angry, but we all know STAR WARS IS BETTER THAN STAR TREK. Clearly. There was a scene of sadness in the movie, near the end, kinda tore me up inside. I couldn't relate to it, but I do miss my old friends, my first few friends that I used to spend weekends playing Nintendo 64 with and watching the latest Leslie Neilson movie. That's why this movie brings nostalgia into play. You can clearly see it in some of the set designs. The car, that guys garage, oops..sorry, I meant carriage.
The last line of the movie was pretty funny, kinda bad to be put there, and kinda good. It was bad because of all the events that lead up to the ending and it was good because it made fun of everyone who hated Episode 1. But it's kinda funny if you hated the first film, which I didn't by the way. In the end result, this movie gets a 10/10 for originality, and for appealing to not only Star Wars fans, but anyone who still has love for the era they grew up in. This movie was for you and me. I'm proud to say that I can watch this movie again and again and still want to continue watching it again the next day. Go buy this movie if you don't have it, it's worth the money and wait. Don't listen to the reviews, especially the Ebert tools. I recommend this for everyone. It manages to have an original plot, with some light humor, but all that makes sense for the situation, and a little sense of nostalgia in it.
Kyle Newman, if you're reading this, you made a very good movie, I hope you can make more films like this. This is one of those movies you should watch before you die, clearly.
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Action movie of the year
I was very hyped for this movie, not as much as I was for Terminator: Salvation, but as soon as I saw that superbowl spot, I was creaming my pants.
It was a hell of a ride seeing this movie in IMAX. I could see Optimus Prime in his 50 feet of metal on screen, it's as if I'm in the movie, just like IMAX says in their intro.
The action was great, the story was great, Megan Fox was hot as ever, and the visual effects were revolutionary! Only Avatar may surpass this film in the visual effects department.
Despite what you may have read on these boards, they're wrong about the film. They're expecting an academy award movie from a title that says "Transformers" in it. I mean, common, get a grip on reality people, this movie was great, you're just hopping on the hate bandwagon because you think you're a true fan, but I know you're not, don't lie to yourselves.
Anyways, go see this movie, it's a fun, action-packed ride that will make you want to see it again and get it on blu-ray. I know I'm buying a copy of this excellent movie on blu-ray whenever it hits stores. Also, if you guys happen to have a copy of the first movie on blu-ray, then check out the bd-live section for new special features.
Otherwise, go see this movie, and don't bring your kids, it has swear words and sexual jokes in it, which are very funny by the way. Michael Bay has yet again, made another great film for everyone to see..well not everyone, especially the people of IMDb.com to say the least. 10/10 for the perfect summer movie. Terminator 4 is on the same level as this, but this one surpasses it just by a bit. Watch it in IMAX.
