Manborg (2011)
lousy special effects and lots of charm.
This is a "B" movie all the way. It is crazy and looks like it was done as a university project. I really enjoyed it. There is little gore, little money spent on effects ( there had better not have been as the effects were laughable) There was a lot of very imaginative stop motion and fun work with blue screen, every thing about this movie was cheese! not blue cheese as it did not stink, it is just... home made like. Lots of fun for non movie snobs who like movies that have no right being appealing but are. This is one of those. you can not help but to like it. Effects are about a 2 acting about a 2 but because it is done on purpose and is like a living cartoon I would bump that to 7. This movie is over the top and silly, everyone seems to be having a good time.
Adam Chaplin (2011)
If all indi's could make gore fests this good Hollywood would stop making them.
WHat a strange moody fun movie. Italy is again King of the low budget horror gore, this is on par or better then the best of the Japaneses extreme, if you like things such as Machine Girl or Tokyo Gore Police, I can highly recommend this movie.
Effects where way over the top in blood and gore, a 12 out of 10. The acting was good or better, the make up effects great, the style, something often lacking in the low budget moves was really we done. The was a continuity of bizarre, slightly off normal throughout the movie that really worked.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and I hope Emanuele De Santi does many more.
Necromentia (2009)
An under-rated gem of a "B' movie.
If this was a "A" movie it would deserve its IMDb rating. It is not. Someone put some love into this! It shows. Top notch "B" horror and on 300,000? That is my 5 year beer bill! Acting ranges from Good to very good. Special effects are above average through out and never take you out of the movie with cheese, actually some of the effects are really bloody well done ( pun intended).Gore level is med/high b I liked the story à la the original Hell raiser ( this is better then 3 on by the way)The characters had some depth to them and to some degree you could empathies with them drawing you again a bit farther into the movie.
All in all , a hour and one half lost but not regretted.
Undead or Alive: A Zombedy (2007)
Could have used more "gore" but I was entertained.
I bought this in the discount bin for 5.00 bucks. It was worth that just for the extras and gag reel. This is not a great movie but western zombie movie hybrids rarely are meant to be. They are meant to entertain. This one does that on all levels.
The two lead actors are very good, funny at times, playing it straight at others. The written material is pretty good, a few good chuckles and a couple of laughs throughout the movie.
The special effects are generally low budget but still very watchable, and they never pull you out of the movie.
The story is simple and moves along very briskly as a "B" movie like this should.
For a "B" Zombie movie this was a good one. Fun and entertaining, if you like well done lower end movies, you can do a lot worse then this.
Ogre (2008)
Worth while for B movie fans and those who like your Shrek "R" rated.
I was surprised they showed us the Ogre in the first 15 minutes, pleasantly. That was ballsy considering shrek looks about as real as this CGI discount special. That all said, I decided to suspend belief and judgment and just enjoy the movie. There is a bit of titillating gore to keep us gore people happy and some of the acting is decent. The ogre is in thew movie often and its not dark out...a refreshing change. None of this movie is bad but then again none of it is all that good. Besides the below par CGI (which was forgivable) I have to say the editing was the worst I have seen in some time. The characters were likable and the story fun.
Worth while for B movie fans and those who like your Shrek "R" rated.
305 (2008)
Actually quite funny and very "B"
This was a very funny movie and I think it was done with tongue in cheek. It is of course a semi mocumentary of the movie 300 but with a few twists. These five guys were suppose to be watching the goat path. They left their post and craziness ensues.
The actors are not taking themselves seriously and are just having fun. It shows and makes the movie sort of charming along with funny and amusing.
No budget, no special effects but well acted and well written. for what is is...it is way above the norm.
Compared to equivalent budgeted movies this thing is a blockbuster!
Zombie Strippers! (2008)
Ignore how bad the first 20 minutes are and you will be entertained.
This is very much a "B" movie lets make that clear. Never mind the beginning and end, they were obviously tacked on to make the meat of this movie work...the middle story. From the fist time Robert Englund opens his mouth until his last scene this movie is fun.
Story, ya right..the tittle says it all.
Special effects? way better then one would expect, sure we could tell when it was CGI but it was done with pizazz not money so cudo's to the crew. Some of the gore was really well done and all of it was fun.
Acting? Two or three of them besides Englund could but who cares, this was about ping pong balls, poles, gore, humorous tongue in cheek and dancing right? If you like your zombies naked your movies "B" and those who can act acting way over the top you will enjoy this movie.
Within its class and genre it is about a 9.2 on the open movie market a 3.
FrightWorld (2006)
Strange mix of poor acting and frighting images.
This was a weird movie. It started out pretty good. A solid sound track behind flash images of gore and mayhem as our psychopath did his thing.
Next comes his "down fall" Here i could tell I was in for a real cheesy "B" movie. Poor acting , I mean how hard is it to hold a gun and act like a cop? These guys could not. After the death scene of our psychopath we get the opening credit and the movie starts...
From this point on it is bad acting big boobs, the occasional bucket of blood and poorly done death scenes.
That said I gave the movie a four because in spite of its flaws it did maintain a sort of creepiness that I just could not quite shake off.
I do not recommend this movie but I have to admit I have seem worse.
10,000 BC (2008)
This movie is not universally hated.
I did not hate it.
I found it stupid ,the story so stretched beyond the historical facts or even fancies of some of the new-age authors that even my easy going attitude to-wards inaccuracy in movies for the sake of art was stretched past its limit. But I did not hate it.
he dialog was wretched, the acting was poor with few exceptions, and the story blew. But I did not hate it and I was entertained. At times I was even drawn in, but then the direction or story would take another silly or bad turn and pop me back out of movie land...
The CGI was good.
Rambo (2008)
Some of the most graphic death scenes in recent history.
Some of the most graphic death scenes in recent history...and some of them I am guessing are pretty realistic (never actually blew a guy apart with a 50 Cal. and never want to). This is action at its best and most grittiest.
Stallone was in true form for this movie: stoic, defeatist and honorable in personality, unbeatable and spontaneous in action.
The story is straight forward and perfect for a action movie...put em in...get em out.
We have black and white teams and the rarely added dimension of gray in a action movie: the mercenary's.
I loved this movie from start to finish.
The Rage (2007)
Highly entertaining gore festival.
I am not sure why this movie is only at 4.4? Sure its the quality of the re-animator or from beyond, but those where great "B" movies. So is this and the effects with the exception of the vultures are pretty good! This movie is gruesome from start to finish and only truly tasteless once.
The sort of bad:
The vultures? Who the hell thought up those and how much was spent on them? Not much! But the juxtaposition between their violence and comical look actually added to the sur-realness of the mayhem.
The pretty good:
Plenty of gore and blood in this little gem of a "B" movie. And good scene chewing by Andrew Divoff, he is great! The rest of the cast are pretty good too. Everything about this movie is over the top and every death is a gory one.
There is a lot of entertainment to be had in this movie if you do not take it seriously, and who could? But just watch it for what it is: a classic "B" gore fest along the lines of the re-animator.
Speed Demon (2003)
What a lurid, execrable waste of time.
Appalling, Awful, lame, Things like that come to mind after sitting through this steaming turd, it took 2 days Just to watch this. David DeCoteau is a name I am going to avoid, I just watched his "leaches" days before and it is just as bad. Pretty faces with no acting ability at all.
Everything about this movie except the story concept is bad, Lousy action acting and sets. The special effects must have been a kindergartens class project, great for 5 year olds embarrassing for a "real movie production".
Its rare i can find so few redeeming or watchable bits in a movie as I love "B" movies, but I really have to say avoid this one and "Leaches" too
Doomsday (2008)
Mayhem, violence and fun.
I knew I would like this violent blast of mindless entertainment inside of the first five minutes. I was right.
If you like your movies over the top, gory, basically plot-less, simple story stolen right out of the "escape from New-York" script.. style of entertainment, this movie is for you.
The blood and mayhem are top notch, the acting is good, the effects great, the gore wonderful. This is a action/apocalypse movie fans fix of the month. There is a simple story but it is there just to set up each set piece of violence and it does that well.
The characters are actually quite likable on all teams and as I said earlier the acting is strong enough to get you in and keep you there.
I had a great time watching this and would recommend it to anyone who likes MAdmax/escape from new-York quality of movies.
Beer, popcorn and a frame by frame on the remote to see how they blew that guys head off and you are set. Its a fun movie.
Diary of the Dead (2007)
This one grows on you...slowly.....Dark and without humor.
I enjoyed this movie. I usually watch these movies for the over the top gore and the humor. This one had neither. There was gore but not a lot, what there was was well done.
The idea of a film within a film leads to logic and stupidity holes that just can not be avoided. I accept that and the artistic license Romero had to take at times. IT did take away from the movie, but not too badly.
This film creeps up on you. It is just barely watchable to start. I wonder if the acting is stiff for the first third because Romero is a genius or because he could not afford more then one or two good actors? The creep factor really grows in the last third of the movie. This movie is at no point a action movie, rarely a suspense movie, not a overly well acted movie( the support actors are better then the leads often)but somehow it still comes out as a good horror movie. It just works. I do recommend it for those who love end of the world zombie movies. Dark and without humor.
Army of the Dead (2008)
Not even its "B" movie status saves this one.
This was just short of being a complete waste of time. The stop animation skeletons saved it.
It was strange seeing actors taking such a poorly written movie and playing it completely straight, as if they thought this was something good. That said the actors could on the whole act. I like "B" movies but they need certain redeeming features for them to work: either they need humor, gore or cleverness. This lacked all three. Yes there was some CGI and I suppose it almost gave me a laugh, but that is because it looked like rivers and fountains coming out of the people "bleeding". Seeing a one foot wide wall of CGI blood hit a windscreen and then in the next scene there are just a few dots of blood on that car...well...and this was about par for the movie. Just not worth your time.
Outpost (2008)
Great acting and story carry this one.
This was a treat to find. I went into it with no expectations, as I do will all "B" movies, and really enjoyed this movie.
There is no weak acting so once you get into the story you are not tossed out. The story is very good, a clever twist on hauntings ala "From Beyond".
The special effects are well done and the gore is good. I personally think the first two death scenes should have been a bit more horrific, but I am not complaining. Sound effects are perfect and that helps to bring you into the movie a lot.
I can easily recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a good ghost story with lots of mood. As good as "ghost ship"
Feast (2005)
Very cool monsters.
This movie was a great treat, I just wish the monsters had been in it a bit more and perhaps a bit more gore, but that might have been at the expense of suspense. And this movie had it, well may be it was more like tension then suspense. I loved the little Freeze frames with the character Bio's, that was a blast. The humour was good and blended well with the scares and jumps. The characters and their idiosyncrasies and stereotyping was good. They story? there was not one really, it was a snapshot in time and it was all we needed to know.
Lots of good quality gore and blood splattering, and these movies are about jumps and splatters. Lots of chuckles. Good production values, sound and acting. I can easily recommend this movie to fans for the genre and to those who like the odd "monster/gore" movie.
AVPR: Aliens vs Predator - Requiem (2007)
Huge disappointment.
This movie had a few good minutes in it, in particularly the opening sequence. I had high hopes for about 5 minutes. The story is straight forward. They stole it from about 2 million "B" zombie flicks. They changed the zombies to aliens and predators. Lame. The creature effects and gore are too dark and you find you are squinting to see anything. What a waste. Production values are good for what I could see. The predator and alien look good for what I could see. The acting is OK. The story blows.
Spoiler I really thought the killing of a hospital full of babies was not necessary and drew me out of what little drawing it it had done(same with the killing of the little boy near the beginning really).
When are they going to do this right? This is not a complete waste of time but barely worth watching.
Shao Lin jiang shi (2004)
The most abrupt ending in movie history.
This movie ended so abruptly I rewinded the DVD, thinking it had skipped. Nope that was the end. I got a laugh out of that.
This movie was not bad, ending aside. Think "Power Rangers" quality acting and marshal arts, add in zombies and better sets and you have this movie. The main character reminded me of Yul Bryner but without much in the way of acting skills, his side kicks were amusing. The "bad guy" was over the top, making him enjoyable to watch and adding needed spark to this movie effort.
I have to say I was kept both entertained and amused so I can recommend this movie if you do not mind endings that are so abrupt you might think the camera just stopped working mid frame!
Köshpendiler (2005)
A very enjoyable action/history movie.
The reason I decided to rent this movie was because Mark Dacascos was in this feature. It was not his worse role by any means but he was only a Minor character, a slight disappointment for me on a personal level but really it only added to the movie as he was key in character development for the main cast.
So on to the movie.
The action was hit and miss. Some was absolutely wonderful, hold your breath type stuff, that generally was the one on one battles, some looked a bit weak. That said, this movie is no 300, relying strictly on action sequences to carry it. It had a great story to carry it along, some fantastic acting and beautiful sets. All in all a very watchable movie if you put aside the fact most of the characters where not of the ethnic background they represented. I had no problem putting that aside and just enjoying a great action/history flick for what it is: entertainment.
Return to House on Haunted Hill (2007)
Not too Shabby and a few scares.
I expected nothing going into this movie, well I had low expectations, I was way wrong. This was a pretty good movie.
It had atmosphere, mood, and scares along with a fair amount of quality gore.
The story tied loosely into the first remake, not that it was necessary, and the story itself, tho weak got us back into the house which is when the fun begins.
There are enough good death scenes to keep ones attention and I really did get the odd chill, not bad for a "B" movie.
If you liked "ghost ship" or "13 ghosts" you should enjoy this movie too, as it is just a notch down from those two titles.
Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005)
AS good as it gets with the budget given.
This version of a D&D movie is a vast improvement over the first as far as staying within the realm of D&D goes. I was surprised just how much I enjoyed this movie. Good acting , charismatic characters, well done Sword-fights( this surprised me) and some very good special effects, OK a few were cheesy but most really were very good.
This movie stays within the world of D&D and that should please the game fans. For those who are not fans of the game but love a good fantasy, this movie will work for you too. It is no lord of the rings but when comparing apples to apples this movie does more then hold its own given the budget. I highly recommend this top quality "B" movie.
Black Sheep (2006)
Turn your brain off and bring your rubber boots.
This movie reminded me of an early Peter Jackson movie, like "dead-alive" or "bad taste" but with better acting and less gore. With a movie like this I will take gore over acting.
Black-sheep is never laugh out laud funny, more like enjoyable groans. This movie has no jumps in it at all, what it does have is a bunch of tongue in cheek killer sheep and some pretty good special gore affects, especially near the end.
There is a story but it is not relevant to enjoying this "B" movie, this is about the sheep and the kills and those are well done. Yes watching this is a waste of time, but it was a fun waste and if you like your movies "B" grade, gory and amusing Black-sheep is worth wasting time on.
Nekeddo burâddo: Megyaku (1996)
Strange and strongly visual
This movie has a strange softness to it between scenes of intense violence. It is sur-real and over the top.
It is a dream-like movie.
Hisayasu Sato added a real story to this one, well a start and a end of a story, just not a beginning and a finish..but who cares?
Do people watch these for the story or the shock value? Shock value here is about 90%.The Story is interesting but has holes, at 78 minutes that is not surprising. The effects are amazing. This is a movie for gore fans and those that like "weird but inoffensive." Not really worth looking for unless you are a collector.. but if you find it do watch it.
One strange flaw was the over the top sound effects, I have never heard a nipple "crunch" until this movie.
Sinbad Jr. and his Magic Belt (1965)
Nothing left but a happy memory
I remember clear as a bell the pulling of the belt and his parrot salty.
These were main stays of my cartoon pleasures as a kid in the late 60's.
I would love to find a copy of any of these episodes anywhere.
I did not know was called "Sindbad Junior" but thinking about the character that makes sense.
I need 10 lines of text, but only have 3 lines of memorys...I just know those days, along with those cartoons are and will be the best days I ever lived. I waited 17 years between my first and second child, and now I am old enough to really see through my second child's eyes what it is to live in a world of unconditional love and happiness....Sinbad recalls those times for me.
