Undercover (2019)
Great series - if you're having trouble falling asleep
Undercover - A series that started with a blast covering drug lord Ferry Bowman's life with two undercover cops trying to put an end to his empire. Everything was going well until it wasn't, and the season ended with a great closure that left the viewers with big hopes for the second season.
But that was it really.
The series slowly started to get boring and repetitive, two things I hate the most about series in general and in the last two seasons they managed to fail me big time with all this "Get in contact with drug lord > convince drug lord to do a deal > lock him up" and add some inner soap opera drama between the side characters. That's all you going to see after season 1. And Bob, the Family Dollar Max Payne, is got to be one of the most irritating, boring main character I have even seen, and I've seen The Room, there was more action there than with this dude.
And even If we put all this critique aside, how the hell did he manage to slip under big time criminals, who have empires of millions to their name radar? I mean, I understand that they had to make him mysterious and slick but come on, you think in the real world that scenario would work? Gay mafia boss and Mrs. Lady Baklava could not make one call with all their connections to figure out who the hell they're doing business with?
And I'm being honest when I'm saying that I literally fell asleep during some episodes forcing myself to stay awake on-and-off. It really is a letdown that you got so many boring characters with such a drag of a plotline in addition. The only reason really I kept watching was because of not other than Ferry (Frank Lemmers). My man. Hence why he got his own series and movie, probably due him being an iconic character that I can only give my applauds to.
I'm so GLAD I'm done with Undercover, if it wasn't for Ferry it probably wouldn't even get 2 stars.
Entrevías (2021)
Teenage drama vibes
If you're like me then you probably look for new series and out of boredom or curiosity you find something interesting and though it may seem like a gamble you still commit and stick to the very end. In my case it was Entrevias - At first I kinda cringed at the acting, but later as the series went on I was thinking maybe it's not THAT bad and since I don't watch anything else at the moment I've decided to stick around, though I must point out some things that just did not sit right with me
First of all, I don't know what was the target audience for this series but the actors did not sell it at ALL. Something just feels off it's written like finals movie project for school, or a family-friendly series for teenagers or something either way I did not believe the roles certain actors were portraying (without discrediting any actor). For example, Tirso - A hardened war veteran supposedly, but for me, he came across as a just bitter anti-social old man, I mean no solider energy coming from him at all. He looks like a history teacher with bad temper. Same with his friends Pepe & Sanchis - funny dou, just don't cut for the role as ex-soldiers. Same thing with the criminals, look playing in a telenovela for kids and boomer Spanish moms is one thing but portraying a ruthless thug out of the varrio is a completely different role that doesn't suit everyone. Especially the clowns they've casted.
Aside that, I see a lot of criticism towards Irene which is understandable to some extent, I mean she was an annoying spoiled little brat but the only thing that bothered me the most about her is the screen time she got throughout the series. Some of her scenes feel forced and unnecessary and god knows they could have taken better direction in writing her character.
I won't spoiler too much but the fact that I'm already starting to forget and lose interest in this show says enough, no hate whatsoever but they should take notes from other crime drama series that made it to the top, this is some teenage drama stuff right there and for what it's worth, if you got patience and you ran out of shows to watch you could give it a try, maybe you'll like it and have a different perspective than mine.
Yankee (2019)
Watchable yet forgetable
So for those of you that come across this show in 2024, there are few things I'd like to say about this show.
I don't hate it but god this show is so cheesy at times, if you like these type of Crimenovelas genre then I don't see a reason why you wouldn't enjoy it, they really filmed the Mexican parts very well.
As for the US plotline, I can't say the same. Why on earth Latino networks can't cast proper American actors for their shows is beyond me, almost every, 90% of these shows cast American-looking lat dude (same as Yankee main character, he does not look one bit like an American lol) with a cartoonish accent that stings in your ear because of what really, can't find a proper gringo across the border? I don't think there is a shortage of actors in the US, even if they are going in a spanish-speaking character that was born and raised in the states. Moreover they speak English only 5% of the time, the "gringa" wife of Malcolm, reminding you, a 100% Americana, speaks Doulingo English with a First Day in The USA accent The ICE agents (again, casting actors by skin pigment, not language skills, or acting for that matter) have very weird accents too (White US government agents with noticeably foreign try-hard accent, good job), and so on, you get my point.
People may think it's a small issue, and I may be missing the point here but trust me, when you see you'll know what I'm talking about. I get it, they had targeted the series for a specific audience that may not notice the difference but come on
As for the plot, can't say nothing bad about it, sure, you may think HOW on earth does one become a cartel jefe just by flying drones (His organization consists of 15-year-old teenagers), but some of the storyline well written in my opinion, the street violence, the authenticity of the gritty Mexico life, hence why I started watching it in the first place. You'll make up your mind within 2 episodes, and if you are a fan of Narco-dramas you may love that show as well, some parts of the series for sure.
The acting on the Mexican side is outstanding in my opinion, Sebastian Ferrat (Carasucia) especially, but like I said earlier it's not all sunshine and palm trees the Americans sucked lol I can't stress this enough, it looks as if they picked a random white dude off the streets and payed him some pesos to act the part, try not to get irritated
However, like many similar titles I don't feel like re-watching it, nope, it's a common problem with these kind of series, it's really a vibe thing, I feel as if I did my deed by finishing it and that's about it really. Something just doesn't work with these shows, notice how many of them got cancelled after the first season, Coyote, The Inmate, Yankee, etc', maybe it's a budget thing or poor production but this is something that's been going on for a while now, and that's a shame as some of them have real potential to improve in my opinion but they had their shot and results verify that it probably wasn't meant to be 🤷♂️
