Dead Solid Perfect (1988)
I worked as an extra in this movie
however, when it was finally released, and I watched it, I really didn't find it all that impressive. About the only thing really worthwhile about this movie is that there's one point where I can point to a vague bluish blur, and tell anyone else present "that's me".
There was one thing that struck me about this movie. I am aware of a culture within the entertainment industry that seems to think that in order to be any good, a movie has to contain a fair amount of obscene language, nudity, gratuitous sex, and other similar garbage. In watching this movie, it seems to me that its makers felt compelled to include a certain amount of this, but that they felt that doing so would interfere with the story they were trying to tell. So what they did was to cram as much of it as they could into about the first 15 or 20 minutes of the movie; and then having got that out of the way they then went on to tell the story with very little further inclusion of such material. You could completely cut out the first 15 or 20 minutes of the movie, and not miss it; and what remains could be shown on network TV during prime time very little further editing for content.
Prey (1998)
Why it only lasted a season
My wife and I enjoyed this show, but what a challenge it was to keep track of it. It seems that ABC kept moving it around, pre-empting it with other shows, and generally making it very difficult to keep track of when the next episode was to be aired. You had to really want to watch this show in order to find it worth the trouble of doing so. Of course it got very poor ratings. How could it do otherwise, when it was made so difficult for the audience to keep up with it? I have to think that someone at ABC very much wanted for this show to fail. They did the same thing to TimeCop (1997), a TV series based on the movie of the same name.
The Legend of Johnny Lingo (2003)
Missing Lesson
Of all the many short movies that the Mormon church has produced, my very favorite of all was the 1969 "Johnny Lingo". The message, given in the end, is very profound, regarding the meaning of the price that Johnny paid for his bride, and what it meant to her sense of self-worth; and how the ugliest, most undesirable woman on the island was transformed into the most valuable and beautiful.
I have just now finished watching 'The Legend of Johnny Lingo'. On the whole, I found it a very enjoyable movie, very much worth watching. Of course, it is to be expected that in 91 minutes, it tells the story in much greater detail, with much more richness, than the 1969 version could do in its 25 minutes.
I was a bit disappointed, however, in the end, when the lesson that was so profoundly taught in the 1969 production seemed to be lost in this version.
This version is very much worth watching, but I strongly recommend that after you've seen this one, you try to find and view the 1969 version as well.
{Added 27 march 2005} If you seek to buy this movie on DVD, do yourself a favor: Find a "Deseret Books" store (a store that specializes in Mormon-related books and materials) and look there for the "LDS Classic 2Disc Edition" of this movie. Among all the other special features, this set includes the original 1969 movie produced by the Mormon church. I could be mistaken, but I think this edition is only sold through Deseret Books.
The Other Side of Heaven (2001)
It's been a very, very long time since I've seen a movie this good.
OK, so I'm a Mormon, and it's safe to assume that this affects my opinion of this movie somewhat. But it does not seem to me that this is really a `Mormon' movie at all. This is a wonderful, inspirational, uplifting movie with much to appeal to mainstream audiences of all faiths.
