Reptile (2023)
At last...
At last another great movie by Netflix which caters to adult, intelligent viewers. It starts as a classical murder story, but then turns into something larger and more menacing, like a reptile shedding its skin. The actors are superbly casted, all act realistically and intensive. Dialogues are sharp and the viewer needs to concentrate to follow. Camera work is flawless with many cool drone shots, beautiful and quiet landscape. The story unfolds first slowly then increases pace until an exciting and satisfying grand finale. So check it out, give it a few minutes time, Reptile will unfold like a wonderfully crafted wine.
Shadow and Bone (2021)
Yet another teenage flick...
No quality in sight. Diverse teenies with magic fighting monsters. For the 100th time. What happened to the Netflix of old (House of Card, Orange is the new black, Stranger things, Better call Saul, Ozark)?
Murder on the Orient Express (2017)
Much better than the haters say
I nearly skipped this film due to its mediocre 6.5 rating. Fortunately i did not. Neither have i read the book or saw the 1974 film (most old films are totally overrated). This version is fast paced, interesting, beautifully shot and has solid (not super strong) performances. It has a few minor flaws but is definitely a movie to enjoy. So ignore the bad reviews and have fun
Triple Frontier (2019)
Dont fall for the negativity here
I appreciate when critics point out unclear storylines, implausible decisions by the characters or plain logical errors. >90% of todays movies and series are just stupid and an insult to the viewers intelligence. However, in case of Triple Frontier I think while some of the storyline criticism is merited, it led to some very undifferentiated low ratings, which the film does not deserve at all.
In my opinion you can find a lot of quality in the film: great actors, beautiful landscape shots, camera work, soundtrack and the action scenes per se. I also think the film had just about the right length, it was exciting and well paced from beginning to the end and had some suprising twists.
Conclusion: if you are looking for a well-made action movie and are not going mad over a few, minor storyline glitches, watch Triple Frontier and have fun.
Maria, ihm schmeckt's nicht! (2009)
Great (and underrated) movie
I have to write this review, as the film's current rating (5.9) is far too low. Already the book was good fun, including some deeper moments, especially when the main protagonist Antonio Marcipane tells about his arrival and first years as an immigrant ("Gastarbeiter") in Germany. The director of the film does a terrific job in combining humorous elements with these more difficult parts of Antonio's character, without becoming too melodramatic. The film is shot in Southern Italy with beautiful, yet realistic images. Camera and cutting is imaginative, the casting convincing (Lino Banfi is a well-known and successful Italian actor). I can only speculate that the low ratings were given by people expecting a pure, Hollywood-type slapstick comedy. Fortunately, the movie is so much more than that. Go see it!
P.S: Being a German married to an Italian wife, we both felt remembered Italo-German experiences while watching the movie...
