Diagnosis Murder (1993)
Fun TV that doesn't take itself too seriously
Being a lazy student I see a fair amount of the program on the BBC in the UK and i have to say its a great way to pass the afternoon. As many have pointed out its hardly the most realistic show on telly, but thats irrelevant. What is relevant is that this show is fun and interesting with some strange crimes involved.
Personally one of the things I love is that this show does not take itself too seriously and it comes across that this show is FUN, for everyone infront and behind the camera and at home.
I have to say that at first i dismissed this as more bad American TV used to fill up the schedules, but the program plays on its eccentricities and never takes itself to seriously.
I have spent many afternoons intending to start working after lunch only to be delayed by forty-five minutes by DM, as its so watchable and once you start you just cant stop! And I have to say if you have the time i would recomend this to anyone.
PS The show ended as Dick Van Dyke decided to retire from acting, without him the show could not reasonably go on.
Clarkson (1998)
At times brilliant
Some parts of this show were brilliant, if a little right wing. Leaving the eponimous presenter to rant on can have a variety of hillarious results and some of his antics (potato cannon, producing toxic fumes from a microwave and throwing the USA from the map in the studio) were hilarious. However you always felt that bringing in the 'celebrity' always cramped his style and so the second segment of the show always feels like a let down after the first. But a vintage slice of his own style of madness none the less.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
Difference between the US and UK
Americans having not had the cultural overexposure to the UK which has been happening in reverse probably will strugle with the accents at times, but this can NOT be termed a problem with the film. Directors and actors should not have to compromise the style of the film because some people find it hard to follow.
Secondly I suspect there is quite a large difference in US and UK humour as many have been commenting on, although some US comedies have taken off in the UK (The Simpsons, Friends and Frasier) their popularity is waneing and there is a long lost of failed shows (including Sienfeld which in my view deserved its 1am timeslot on BBC2) and Monty Python alone hardly represents the complete back catalogue of British comedy.
In summery there may be cultural differences but I say to the Americans who have a problem with them to get used to them, we have to.
Pi (1998)
odd but good
This certainly is one of the strangest films i have seen in years. But it quickly became apparent that it was also rather good. Once you get past the quick paced filming and action that is as in some places this film was just too intense to take in. But if like myself you find the dvd in the bargain bins i would advise picking it up.
Hornblower: Mutiny (2001)
Stop being so insular
This may well be an excellent production, but I would like to ask the Americans amongst you not to credit an American Network with its production but rather the UK casts crews and channels responsible for making it rather than the US network which seams to incessantly repackage mid quality UK productions
The Handmaid's Tale (1990)
wasted chance
This was a truly great book, which i really enjoyed. I then got excited about the prospect of a film only to find it had been ruined in a woefully bad film adaptation which verges on the unwatchable. Such a shame, someone please do a decent remake.
