Englemageren (2023)
Riddled with irritating mistakes and plotholes
It starts well enough, but during the opening scene already we as an audience start asking questions. Like why don't the victims tear a hole in the plastic bag over their heads? And when the killer stands with a cell phone trigger threatening to blow the bomb, why doesn't the protagonist or the sidekick just shoot the cell phone? And at the end, how did the killer's mother catch and tie up both the sidekick policeman, the husband, the policeman's pregnant girlfriend/wife, and the protagonist? And why didn't the protagonist just turn around and shoot the mother, she obviously is an extremely good shot (she shot the killer right in the forehead).
Overall a very entertaining movie that I would normally give a 7, or even an 8/10, but these obvious mistakes/plotholes takes it down for me.
Jentetur (2022)
A mediocre Norwegian version of The Hangover
The good things first: the actors/actresses are great, the camera work and lighting are convincing, and there are some genuinely funny moments.
But when it comes to the story it sort of falls apart. It seems like they came up with a basic story of a divorced woman who gets very jealous of her ex-husband's new squeeze and then they pile on with one awkward situation after another. Some of those situations are very over the top and not very believable either, and you end up with a bit of a mess that you feel you've seen before, only better. There are especially two scenes in the middle that The Hangover did much better.
So all in all, a mediocre effort that has its moments.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023)
Quite effective trip down memory lane
Because of all the hate generated before this movie came out I went in with pretty low expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised! Yes, the de-aging in the beginning is a bit dodgy and even a bit off-putting at times, but I have no problem looking past that and enjoy the sequence. Another thing that put me a bit off was the fact that they put a black woman as a government agent (the actress has hinted that this was not unusual when it came to going undercover to spy on the Black Panthers) in the 60's, but I'm not sure how believable it is in this setting. It feels a bit forced. Lastly, the Helena-character is quite irritating, at least in the beginning of the movie, but that changes in the course of the story.
These few small things aside, the entire movie is a nostalgic trip where we literally see a few old faces, and the whole thing feels very much like a good old Indy adventure! For me it is way better than KotCS and even a tiny bit better than tToD (in my humble opinion of course).
So don't listen to the hate (I really don't understand where all that comes from!) and see this for yourself, it is worth your time and money, especially if you love the original trilogy!
Turning Red (2022)
Great animation but Pixar went woke with this one
Clichè, stereotypical characters, and woke story elements ruin a very beautifully animated movie! We see it time and again that when a good story idea is turned into a political statement the fun goes right out the window and you're left with a mess like this. It looks like Pixar is afraid of portraying boys as boys and girls as girls and it's a darn shame from the studio that gave us Toy Story and Cars and Up! It was cringy to watch this with my kids and that's when you know Pixar lost its main audience! First Pixar movie I will not get on Blu-Ray!
The New World (2005)
Boring disguised as "art"
I bought this film on DVD in a moment of delirium I think, in combination with it being very cheap, and I can only think of a couple of redeeming features which are the music of James Horner and Christian Bale.
The pace is unbearably slow with endless shots of grass and light through leaves and other long shots that belong in a documentary about nature. This movie is the result of a self-indulgent director who's fallen in love with his importance to "cinema" and not even the aforementioned music of James Horner or Christian Bale can save this mess!
Stay well clear of this monstrosity and don't waste your time on this "art project"!
Entebbe (2018)
Heck of a story, bad movie
I grew up with the movies "Raid on Entebbe" (1976) and "Operation Thunderbolt" (1977) and know this story very well. I even read a couple of books about it and therefore had high expectations for this movie. Both "Raid on Entebbe" and "Operations Thunderbolt" are vastly superior versions, and "7 Days in Entebbe" can not be called anything but a travesty. It actually moves the focus from the hostages and the commandos to the hi-jackers, like anyone cares what they are feeling or thinking. On top of this there's a side story with the girlfriend of one of the commandos who's doing a dance routine on stage, and this dance is inter-cut throughout the movie, and completely screwing up the focus that the main story needs. Avoid this, and watch one of the aforementioned movies instead!
