Grande école (2004)
Pretentious nudity.
I saw Grande Ecole at its world premiere on the Rotterdam Film Festival. I had no idea what I was entering and if I'd had any idea I wouldn't have entered. This is the most pretentious film I've seen for a long time. It tries to be provocative, yet deep, with its full frontal homosexual sex scenes - it doesn't succeed! It's nothing but another bad excuse of showing naked persons on the big screen. 4/10
Kundskabens træ (1981)
Worth to see if you live in Aarhus, Denmark
Well, according to people who have more knowledge of the history of film than I this film has been of great importance to the Danish film industry. That might be right but it just doesn't do anything for me.
One of the main problems is that there are almost only kids in the main roles. Of course there has to be, it is a movie about growing up, after all. But it's a problem as most of them can't really act. It's just too sheepish. I'll have to admit that it captures the situations you experience when you're young perfectly. But it's not enough.
It is worth watching if you're living in Aarhus, Denmark, though... Kind of interesting real life locations if you know 'em :-)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
Well...
Indy is cool, but the movie is not. Basically Indy is just Han Solo dressed in a cowboy hat and a whip. That's probably why he is so damn cool.
I think the movie is, well, entertaining, but it's just too fake in some way. Indy, the Chinese boy and the lady are thrown into the adventure without a decent prologue. Could've been way better.
Siu Lam juk kau (2001)
Freakin' funny
This is the best special effects movie since The Matrix. Add to this hilarious humor, crazy ideas, and, in general, extreme coolness. It's hard for people in the west to judge the acting, but it works fine anyhow 'cause we do understand the jokes perfectly using subtitles. Basically it's a great film, and I wonder why it hasn't had any publicity in the west.
Whether you like the humor or not it's hard to argue against the SFX. Like in other films dealing with this much SFX, a lot of CGI has been used but definitely not overused. It just have this certain amount of coolness which is, if you haven't seen it, pretty damn hard to describe.
