The Train (1964)
FIVE STAR TRANSPORT
THE TRAIN. What can I say about this movie? Nothing, absolutely nothing.
As I was completely blown away by story, suspense and actors, I can't say anything, because it would probably spoile my own thoughts. Thoughts of sheer happiness, just being able to watch the perfect film.
Thoughts of war-time France, as I picture it in my dreams. Everybody loves Lancaster and Scofield, but I want to add that Simon surprised me the most. Papa Bull, who sabotages his own train, the one and only love of his life, to buy the resistance time in order to waste the german plans. The tactical war between german officer Scofield and French Station chief Lancaster, is a very intelligent game. Not a five star final I think, but one in which the stupidity of war is well brought.
A very intelligent masterpiece. One of the best films I've ever seen.
And that's all I have to say.
Dief! (1998)
THE BIRDMAN OF BELGIUM
This is the real story of Frans Van Reeth, a small time crook who spent most of his life in jail. In and hour and a half we learn all about the love of his life, his inmates, his adventures in and out of prison and the way he ends. I saw this film 8 times. Not because of the storyline, but because of the music. Good soundtrack, bad performance of Daeseleire as Van Reeth but still entertaining. two out of five.
The Game (1997)
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MR. DOUGLAS
Some of you know what it's like to be completely surprised by the ending of a movie. 'the game' is a good thriller, but what really surprised me was both the story and the ending. For me this is Douglas best performance since Wall Street. He plays a very un-nervous person, who seems to be well in touch with reality. Once he strands in Mexico, he seems to lose it and I thought at that point: 'Falling down' once again? It ends like a gigantic joke, and that's the only thing I can't understand. I mean, they take away everything and it doesn't seem to bother him at the end, after a jump of death!!! Come on!!!
But... I really must admit I liked it. Fincher (seven, fight club, panic room) surprises. three out of five.
Sunset Blvd. (1950)
SWANSON'S FINAL CLOSE-UP
***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** Swanson and Holden, who plays the biographer of the former silent movie-star are sitting together when he asks her:" You used to be pretty big?" She immediately answers: "I'm still big, it's the pictures that got small."
Wilder's best performance. He directs the dramatical story of disappointment. Swanson should have won an oscar. The fact that she didn't get it is the biggest screw-up in movie history. The same thing can be said about Downey Jr for 'Chaplin'. The fact she kills Holden in the final scene adds up to what the movie is all about. Everybody knows she's excentric and a fallen idol. The part I liked the most is Holden knocking at her door, and he's being mistaken by Von Stroheim, the butler, for a funeral aranger. Swanson's chimp died. A perfect beginning to a perfect film. A great classic, and although not very fast, it is still breathtaking and very realistic. An absolute A, one of the best films ever made, with an excellent performance by Holden and Von Stroheim.
On a cold winter day, staring out of the window, I often think about this masterpiece, and wonder if Swanson plays a role or plays herself.
Panic Room (2002)
KING OF THE 21TH CENTURY-THRILLER
I've read somewhere that Fincher wanted to copy Hitchcock's Vertigo and Rear Window-like films.
Seven, the Game, the Fight club and even Alien 3 were an absolute 4 on a scale of 5. Fincher proves he is the new master of suspence. I think his first choice, Nicole Kidman, would have been excellent. Foster is Ok, but Whitaker is the absolute star. As for Jared Leto, he proves he can take on any role. As I watched this movie in a theater a few months ago, I must admit the audience was very quiet. That is an absolute proof of Fincher's directorial skills. Can't hardly wait for MI3. Another kind of movie, could Fincher become the King of the 21th century-thriller?
