Best Friend (2023)
Standard Mystery Revenge Thriller
Best Friend is one for the many films of the post Get Out black thriller. Unfortunately, the film doesnt Typical and predictable revenge and mystery thriller that doesn't stray from the formula with an ending that comes off nonsensical and not believable. You can predict what will happen as far as the mystery death almost midway in the film and when that occurs its more a down slide after that. The acting with Marques Houston, Serayah and Blue Kimble are OK and they did what they could with a lackluster script that doesn't give its lead actors much to work with, but the film overall is average fare.
Till (2022)
Brilliant film respects honor of Emmitt Till, Deadwyler shines
I was skeptical of how this film would turn out as far as depicting the harrowing moment of Tills death but the film manages to tackle the moment with respect and delicacy. It's also a beautifully shot film with his bright colors and nuances. As far as the performances Danielle Deadwyler who plays the role of Tills mother is the standout. You can feel every pathos in each scene that she is in (especially the court scene). She gives an Oscar worthy performance and has a chance to actually win Lead Actress. Whoopi Goldberg who co produced this film was also good in a small role as grandmother. A+
B-Boy Blues (2021)
Impressive directorial debut from Smollett
Very impressive. It gives a bit of early Spike Lee's jittery cam style set in Brooklyn. It also is an honest tale of the black b boy gay culture whose narrative is brazenly missing in the LGBTQ film arena. The acting was great all around and if her role was longer rapper/talk show host Heather B who played a supporting role could have easily received an Oscar nod for Supporting Actress as her role of the caring auntie.
