The Menu (2022)
The depth behind the writing
This is a not necessarily a brilliant film in terms of tension, suspense and thrills but the layers beneath the writing compell you to keep watching, hoping to gain more knowledge.
On the surface, this may look like a story of the obsessed artist who feels his art has been compromised by the upper class and the effects of consumerism. This drives him to create the menu. The clear allegory of consumerism and the upper class are represented by the snobby characters juxtaposed to Anya Taylor Joy's character.
The interpretation that I have taken from this film applies to the current art of filmmaking in today's cinema. Ralph Fiennes character is the filmmaker who has lost his love for the true art of cooking because of the people who are consumed by money and greed and do not understand the art i.e. His customers. Nicholas Hoult's character represents the everyday consumer who has no original opinion but instead blindly follows herd mentality.
This is very applicable in today's society as many filmmakers are just trying to please people while losing their own love for the art. Anya Taylor Joy's character reminds him of his initial love for the art which provides a fitting conclusion.
Black Adam (2022)
Hollow at the core
Contained all the things we've come to expect from a Dwayne Johnson movies and for most people that seems to be enough. But it lacked any originality and quality in writing with a few good directing choices.
The characters were all really one dimensional and lacked any real development. Doctor fate was promising and I look forward to what DC plans to do with his character in the future. Hawkman was not great but I was genuinely surprised on how they used him and they did it better than the arrowverse.
The rest of the justice society were clearly there as filler and showed how much they need their own movie since all they did was play second fiddle to black Adam obviously.
Black Adam was the hollow point as he is everything you would expect him to be which is the biggest issue here. This movie was just a filler setup for his big showdown with Superman.
The Legend (2022)
Greatest movie of all time 🤣
If you have some unique desire to destroy your brain and leave your eyes unable to look at anything again, please go watch this movie.
This is so incredibly bad, it has redefined how bad a movie can be. To call it a movie is unfair to movies. This is just gibberish made from an endless supply of money.
Boyhood (2014)
Brilliant and Personal
Almost every Richard Linklater movie I have ever seen is in some way personal to me. He really understands life from a beautiful perspective.
This is his best coming of age movie and probably the best coming of age movie of all time. Regardless of the time, patience and effort this film took to be made which should be obviously be considered this is still extraordinary.
There would be no use wasting so many years to make this film if the initial idea and story wasn't brilliant and brilliant it was. His dialogue as usual is perfect and his conversations are as engaging as ever.
Kimi no na wa. (2016)
Magical and Magnificent
One of the best romantic movies if not THE best romantic movie out there. I approached it with the initial scepticism of an anime movie but quickly forgot that it was anime. The quality of the story was so magnificent setting it apart from any other movie.
It was engrossing from start to end and the journey is one of the best a movie has ever given me. It may seem stupid at times but this was made of the best romance I've ever seen.
Having seen soo many romantic movies already, this was the first time in a looong time that I was touched by such emotion in a movie and a foreign film nonetheless.
DEFINITELY DEFINITELY worth a watch even if it's not your cup of tea. It may just become your cup of tea after the 1hour and 45minutes.
Peacemaker (2022)
Wonderfully Executed
James Gunn clearly showed what he was trying to do with this character as soon as we see the first 10 minutes of the show and after how we felt about the character in 'The Suicide Squad', he did a great job to make us care about him through humour and relatibility.
John Cena as usual exhibiting his pure talent as a showman and played the character to perfection. The supporting cast all did well playing the cliches they were but overall good enough.
The music was the standout and I personally loved his choices for each scene.
The Batman (2022)
Breathtakingly Beautiful
This was everything that a batman/noir fan can dream about. I absolutely loved how Matt Reeves used the noir genre in The Batman to full effect and to perfection.
It was easily one of the greatest movies I have ever seen and probably the second best batman movie of all time. Just beating Batman Begins and right behind The Dark Knight.
Matt Reeves brought to life the perfect Bruce Wayne, maybe even better than Nolan's Bruce Wayne. This was a nocturnal, year two Bruce Wayne; one who was so used to being The Batman, he forgot who Bruce Wayne really was.
The performances were all brilliant with Pattinson being the standout and Jeffrey Wright, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano almost stealing the show. Robert Pattinson may even go on to defeat the great Christian Bale depending on how the next few movies go.
Red Notice (2021)
It's a movie....
Nothing else to say. Netflix found the three most hottest actors of our time, gave them a half decent no effort possibly AI generated script and every beat of the story was made predictable.
Watchable but not something for avid film buffs to enjoy but for people who watch movies now abd then.
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008)
Depressing yet unbelievably perfect
A wonderful movie. Here I was, thinking I had watched every good war movie and I come across this masterpiece. Showcasing some good acting with Asa Butterfield being the standout, this story about friendship will break your heart.
The child's perspective is always difficult to capture especially when it comes to the holocaust but somehow the ending has left me satisfied.
Arcane: League of Legends (2021)
Brilliant and Beautiful!
I had no expectations when I started this show. I haven't played the game so I didn't know anything yet the writers managed to give me the necessary exposition while also planting easter eggs to keep the gaming fans interested.
The characters are brilliantly crafted and the episodes are paced perfectly altogether. The voice acting by Hailee
Steinfeld is perfect for Vi.
Vi is truly a special character as she represents feminism and girl power and all that but in the right way and not in an excessive way like the Charlie's Angels remake.
Invincible (2021)
Surprisingly Great!
The concept and idea is granted, not very original yet it somehow works by taking a proven concept and recapturing it from their own perspective.
They truly prove the fact that everyone can have their own unique perspective on the same idea. With an incredible voice cast, it never fails to entertain me.
The characters are all given the right amounts of time and you will fall in love with them. If you love The Boys, you're guaranteed to love Invincible.
Spencer (2021)
Had potential to be better
This is a character of many layers and complexities and yet, all they did was let Kristen Stewart do her impression of Princess Diana.
The idea was there and you could see what they were trying to do but they fell short by quite a big margin.
Worth a watch but it may disappoint you.
Hawkeye (2021)
Meh...
What do you expect from Marvel? All show, no substance. That is all this is.
Watchable if you're a fan of Hailee Steinfeld but otherwise not really. The writers are content with a mediocre script and leave it up to the director to make it all look fancy. Classic Marvel. This was created just as set-up for the future of Marvel.
The Lighthouse (2019)
Something Happened...
Every movie is meant to evoke a certain feeling at a certain period during the movie but The Lighthouse makes you feel nothing and so many things all at once. They slowly lull your senses as they drag you into their world to maximize the film experience.
You suddenly feel like you're stranded on an island in a lighthouse with 2 crazy people in 1890. I expect nothing else from a film.
Two brilliant performances from a brilliant script topped off with some brilliant choices by the director and cinematographer leading to a brilliant film being made.
Though it may not appeal to all audiences, the one's who do understand what is happening will enjoy it thoroughly.
Double Indemnity (1944)
Entertainment at its finest
Watching this movie as a teenager in the year 2021, Billy Wilder absolutely blew me away! This was the start of my endless obsession with film noirs.
The story, the directing, the acting, all fell into place just so well and it just... CLICKED. That's all. It all just felt perfect and absolutely brilliantly done. There are so many overrated films theses days..., all people need to do is just look back and give films like these a chance and I can assure anyone that if you watch this and give it a genuine chance, you will LOVE it!
The Apartment (1960)
Billy Wilder...
I revel in his greatness.
Absolutely loved this movie even though I'm a teenager watching this movie in 2021. Jack Lemmon is the clear standout but Billy Wilder is the king. He truly rules over this movie and he shows it.
He takes his time setting it up but he truly rewards us as the just like the saying. 'All good things come to those who wait.' All Wilder needs is an audience that gives him a chance and he repays that faith with pure entertainment.
The Wire (2002)
Doesn't get better than this
I heard that during it's initial run that The Wire's creator David Simon had to convince executives to not cancel the show. Take a moment to digest that. Cancelling The Wire... You look at shows today, Riverdale, The Flash... all these PATHETIC shows that keep on running for no reason and The Wire, the GREATEST TV SHOW was almost cancelled.
The Characters are so intricately crafted to mirror relationships on both sides. There is no singular 'main character' but a collection of talented actors playing the role made for them. OMAR LITTLE. One of the greatest television characters.
Show, don't tell. Perfectly executed. The right song at the right time to clue you in. The quote at the start of the episode always, ALWAYS has a deeper meaning than you think.
Band of Brothers (2001)
War presented at its most realistic
I have watched the most acclaimed war movies and they all stirred up a lot of different emotions in me. But the beauty of Band of Brothers is...it's real. More real than anything else. There are war movies based on real life but Band of Brothers is just unbelievable. The cinematography is incredible and the characters have so much depth seeing as they have 10 hours of runtime in total. Each moment is beautifully crafted to bring out a certain emotion in us. A must watch for anyone.
Tenet (2020)
UNDERRATED! HAS EXCELLENT CONCEPT
A terrific concept thought of, yet again by the great CHRISTOPHER NOLAN. Only he could think, "What if action scenes went in reverse?" This film is the classic puzzle you expect from Chris Nolan with nonstop entertainment and tension carefully crafted by him. He draws you in with the visual effects and keeps you there with some splendid directing. The exposition is a touch heavy only because there is so much to say. But I'm nitpicking when I say he could deliver the exposition like Kubrick in 2001: A space Odyssey. He has done it before and it's possible he may have gotten a touch lazy in his writing. But, nevertheless, this film does not deserve the hate it receives. That's just one man's opinion.
The Flash (2014)
LAZY WRITING!!
I think we can all agree they started out well... Seasons 1 and 2 were terrific. When I first saw season 3, I was on the edge about it. But in hindsight, it looks amazing when you compare it to seasons 6 and 7. ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE AND LAZY WRITING!!! Season 7 is UNWATCHABLE. And this is coming from an avid DC fan. I had to force myself through it, hoping for a good payoff, at least. But NOOOOOO! They had to mess that up as well. Should've stopped after Crisis along with Arrow. If you think the writing is bad, the acting is somehow worse. There's only so much you can do with a bad script but except for Grant Gustin and maybe to some extent Danielle Panabaker, the ACTING IS HORRRIFIC. They don't even make an effort to change a bad script to a watchable episode.
