2002 (2001)
Martial Arts Ghostbusters!
Ok, while it isn't as good as Ghostbusters, it was a very entertaining picture. The ideas of reincarnation and the afterlife were really cool to see, particularly Sam Lee's character being reborn. The martial arts were decent but it was painfully obvious that both Nicholas Tse and Stephen Fung aren't the best fighters if at all. It really didn't matter because the action was cut well and the fights seemed to be innovative, especially the pool fight. With top notch special effects, action, and some comedy, 2002 is a pretty good movie that may have gone under some people's radar. It's something that people should definitely check out.
Shurayukihime (2001)
Very entertaining action fare!
Shurayuki Hime is a remake of the classic Japanese movie, Lady Snowblood. The fight scenes are very well executed and Donnie Yen exhibits his growing proficiency in choreography. I primarily purchased the movie for the Donnie Yen involvement and was not disappointed, so the underlying story was not bad. It did not seem to be the best acted Japanese picture, but it held the story together enough for viewers to not lose interest. I definitely recommend it. 8/10
Gau Lung bing sat (2001)
Recommended HK fare
"Goodbye, Mr. Cool" is a picture where Ekin Cheng is reformed Triad leader who recently got out of prison. His performance is commendable, not just for his acting but also the few though satisfying action sequences.
For fans of Jingle Ma, this is not your typical whimsical and new age Jingle Ma stuff. It is darker, but not to the point of being gritty. This was a definitely well-received picture.
Pa-la Pa-la ying ji fa (2001)
Entertaining movie fare
Para Para Sakura was a rather surprising movie for me. Entertaining and light, it mixes a good blend of drama and comedy. The dancing scenes are quite good and as always, the beautiful Cecilia Cheung shines. Aaron Kwok delivers a good performance as well and is probably one of his most emotionally diverse roles he has ever done. Very good though the ending seemed a little off to me, definitely worth a watch.
The One (2001)
Definitely a must for Jet Li fans
A very entertaining film, The One uses Jet Li in very cool and stylish ways. While I personally would have enjoyed a somewhat better plot, I did not let it detract from the main reason I went, to watch the kung fu! The action is excellent, with great wire-work and very good use of body doubles. While not Li's best film, it certainly is highly enjoyable and should not be missed by any fans of martial arts or of Jet Li.
Rating: 8/10
Batoru rowaiaru (2000)
One of the better foreign movies ever made
This movie is fantastic, with great character development, thrilling plot, and cool action, this movie entertains on many levels. Definitely not for those who squirm and shy away from violence, for those who do watch it, the movie speaks for itself, both in scope and delivery.
Rating 10/10
Bannô bunka nekomusume (1992)
Very entertaining series
This is a truly great show. Megumi H.'s portrayal is cute, sweet, and will certainly draw ears from fans of her other work. The story is leisurely, with comedy, action, and just a tad of human emotion. All in all, definitely one of the better animes out there.
Hotaru no haka (1988)
Hands Down, the Best Animated Movie Ever
What else can be said about this movie other than that it's perfection? This is the type of movie that will always stay with you and will drastically change the way you view the preciousness of life. This powerful movie while incredibly good, can only be seen after periods of time, like every six months. Otherwise the dramatic elements will be too depressing. This is just how good this movie is.
