Karnasubarner Guptodhon (2022)
Boring!!! Left in the Intermission.
It has been a while I watched a 'mainstream' Bengali movie. My mom read some review on Times or Telegraph about how it's great' giving it a 4/5 rating so I thought let's watch it for the Pujas. So I riled up the whole family and we went for it.
The opening car chase and accident and the vfx on that looked very decent. Then came a huge info dump and I just stopped caring about 2 mins in. It was dreadful. Do people think that if they just give huge expositions, people are gonna care? Then came the dialogues. It was quirky and funny and then it just dragged. We get it, the supporting guy likes food.
The villain is the most un-intimiinidating villain coming in to follow the main cast like back in the movies of cat and mouse chase. It feels there is no stakes even after the villain reveals himself and threatens everyone with a gun.
The so called detective work is stupid and the puzzles more stupid.
We just couldn't. I looked at my family members and we all nodded. We knew we are gonna walk out now.
Never watching another Bengali movie without it running for at least a week so I can read some Audience reviews and not corporate reviews that were bought.
Brahmastra Part One: Shiva (2022)
A Hit and yet a Miss
I don't remember how this movie was advertised at the beginning or near the end since I only watched the first trailer and kept myself in the dark because I fell in love with the visuals as a Vfx artist myself.
So onto the Review:
Bad Pacing, Unbelievable Romance, Laughable and Cringe Dialogue, Too long of a film, Exposition done completely wrong and the weapons 'feel' weak except for Ranbir and the main villain Junoon with her two goons.
Only good thing was it's somewhat limited but gorgeous action scenes, great camera work and fantastic visual effects.
Personally other than the Visuals, I was disappointed. However, the ending actually intrigued me still. I wanna see Part II : DEV.
He is being made up to be something so I do hope enough people go in to see the movie.
So my rating of 7/10 will confuse people but that's what I feel this movie is. A fun watch in the theaters and then re-watching the fight scenes constantly on Youtube because it was a Banger.
Halo (2022)
Money Laundering Scam
I now completely 100% believe that Hollywood is making media just to money launder.
When the showrunners say that they are avoiding the source material and then comes up with the most bland overused "Meat Head does bad things and now teams up with Diverse Strong Female to Redeem himself" then I don't know what to say.
Anyone who is giving this show more than 5 is a liar and is only doing so because 'Gamers bad' and 'Must Consume and LOVE Everything Modern'.
There is nothing redeeming about this. It's just a bunch of untalented hacks taking over existing franchises and ruining their live action counterparts.
All these adaptations fail critically and financially so the only reason they keep making them is Money Laundering. It all makes sense now.
Chhalaang (2020)
Disgusting & Disturbing Second Half
The 1st Half is 'okay'. Nothing special nor anything bad per se. So there is not much to talk about. Rajkumar Rao does what he does best and acts.
Then comes the second part of the movie. Most of the things that the protagonists does are Illegal and I mean literally. They are also morally wrong and everything is shown in a comedic way. Just because it's comedy doesn't mean you are do Illegal stuff. Speech and Action are two different things.
They send kids to steal Guavas and then have them chased down by dogs.
They introduce girls to the team which isn't a problem but then have several scenes where ignorant statements by the boys is met with the girls resorting to physical violence. If that is what you want to teach young girls on how to tackle their problems in the future then do remember that they will be visiting hospitals and jail cells for the rest of their lives.
The parents were right about their kids being allowed to miss actual classes for a stupid competition for the egos of the main cast. The competition exists purely because of the pride of the 2 coaches.
And then, this is the part that actually made me furious, once the parents rightfully takes their kids out of the competition, the teachers go from house to house and Blackmails the parents into letting their kids back into the competition. What am I even watching at this point? This is not anymore a Comedy, it's a Horror show for any parent.
A very Disturbing and Disgusting movie.
The Art of Self-Defense (2019)
Preachy at Times but Fun Overall
The social commentary around 'patriarchy' and 'toxic masculinity' is a bit too much on your face but overall, it didn't hinder my fun of watching it.
The humor and Jesse's performance is what will keep you entertained throughout. The writing and the Directing is overall very good.
Atrangi Re (2021)
Good idea, Bad execution
The concept was good. The science was weird and unrealistic but hey, it was a fun movie nonetheless.
Though the ending was the most disappointing part. I guessed what had happened by the middle of the movie and that's not because I used my 'intelligence'. The actors in the story literally spelled it out for me.
However, the way it was carried out still disappointed me. There was still a mystery that was looping and I didn't like how it ended. It had that same over the top Bollywood style.
Overall, the idea was good but the execution was bad.
The Soundtrack was phenomenal.
I enjoyed the movie.
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021)
Plays it too Safe and Boring
'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' was a pretty average movie It was also very 'safe'. Not really a good movie on Transgender issues to be honest.
It bypasses most of the 'harder parts 😉' of being a transgender through the surgery.
That surgery that the girl had is still rare and costs crores and by the look of it, the girl's family wasn't that rich. It's not also available everywhere especially in India. You have to travel abroad and that cost has to be taken into consideration.
Also most Trans women don't get the surgery because it's rare, expensive and it has many many risks. So they bypassed the 'meat 😉' of the messaging by basically making her a full on girl rather than an actual currently living realistic trans woman.
You can praise it all you want for the 'social messaging' it brings but I am not here to be a puppet for a 'social protest'. I am judging the movie for what it is and it is BORING.
Nail Polish (2021)
A Inovative Attemt but Falls Short
It's a good attempt at a psychological but goes to places a bit more 'unrealistic'. I understand that some of scenario presented in the court case do play a part in a trail but this movie took it to a much more unrealistic level. Overall, a good watch but nothing for me to recommend it to everyone else.
Kaagaz (2021)
Too Filmy for the Subject Material
Before the movie starts, there is a disclaimer that name used were fictitious and the events are dramatized.
Yes, this is true but at the same time this is a real story of a Ordinary Man going through Extraordinary Circumstances and Winning.
However, this movie basically downplays the whole story by making it a caricature of the True Story. Why is Bollywood so scared to show these True stories as this over the top Bollywood movie still baffles me. The stories themselves are enough to carry the movies.
The only good thing in this movie is the Acting and all my ratings go to the Actors.
Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story (2020)
The Curse of Ordinary
Man, this just goes to show that you as the common man is not suppose to rise after a certain level. Once you cross that threshold, the bigger fish in the pond will come for you. Harshad used the same tactics as his peers in the Stock/Money Market but he dreamed too big that it ended up barking up the wrong tree and his 'empire' came down.
My only gripe with the series is easily shown at the end of every episode - "Special Thanks Times of India". The journalists were the only ones in the whole series who were shown to do no wrong. They cared about 'integrity', 'truth' and 'facts'. We as the people now know that none of that is true. They are human like us and give in to their biases as easily as any man.
Sucheta Dalal was not a hero, she was a puppet used by corrupt people to take down a corrupt man.
The Empty Man (2020)
Love Craftian Wannabe
The writers were kind of onto something but it felt like it was a mixture of too many genres and there are many scenes contradicting to what the movie ended up to be. It was left unexplained which is okay, I guess? However, the writing wasn't really tight enough to help the audience 'uncover' the 'mystery' of 'The Empty Man'.
Overall, it was at least something close to a "Lovecraftian' Horror but ultimately fails due to bad writing. Still, an okay watch if you want that kind of movie in Present day as not many Studios go for this kind of Cosmic Horror.
5/10
Chocolate Covered Christmas (2020)
Okay for a Random Watch
It's a Christmas movie that's suppose to be a casual one time watch anyway. The thing that disappointed me was the Main Actress who is the protagonist is a pretty stoic face. That's all she is. I mean the acting was so bad. She's pretty and all but that's not enough for a good movie. The best friend of the main actress was more appealing to me. Anyhow it's worse than a throwaway movie. The 'conflict' was meh and the whole movie ended up being meh thereafter.
A New Year's Resolution (2021)
A kind of Hypocritical One sided take on the overarching Backstory.
This Hallmark movie is like any other Hallmark movie with a bit of cheesy dialogues here and there and is ultimately just a casual feel-good watch. This is great as I would guess it's why these kind of movies are made around the Christmas and New Years time. It achieves that and if that was the story then this movie would have gotten a 7/10 for me which a "Good Enjoyable Casual Watch".
Where the movie falls through personally is the Ethical dilemma that is the background for the 'Main' conflict between our protagonists.
One is a Producer for a News Show and the Other is a Sales Executive (Something along those lines) in a Bank. The reason why I gave this movie a 4/10 is because it demonises the Corporate while Honoring the Media. It got to a certain point where it got too preachy for me and I could easily see the 'message' being pushed.
I know the Corporate Hell and treachery that goes on in a Office while also knowing the Deceit and Manipulativeness of the Media. I choose neither so I won't cheer for either for 'exposing' the other. That is all.
Ludo (2020)
Almost perfect Blend of different stories
It's a good movie mixing in 4 different stories and how Fate brings them 'together'. The movie brings up Fate, Destiny and the Dichotomy between 'Good' & 'Evil' in it's philosophical themes. I liked it. Another good movie in Anurag Basu's Filmography.
The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020)
This is how it end...
No Spoiler, the title reflects only the end of this franchise. It could have been a fun franchise with multiple movie and even different casts but Hollywood did what it does best, butcher good storylines.
Look, if you are a fan of the first movie and want to see the characters again then watch this movie definitely. But that's all this movie is good for. For our main boy to get some action and kind of end his story in a more consistent way. Other than that this is one of the most forgettable movies I have seen in a long time. Just let it play in the background while you do something else like maybe watch actual P*rn.
A 5/10 for me just cause I love the characters, otherwise would have been a 3/10.
