Animal (2023)
Entertaining. The suggestion of a sequel was ridiculous.
This movie was long. 3h24minutes runtime. Yet, it was interesting and entertaining. There were plenty of plot holes. This is just a mindless entertainer, escapism entertainment. Its violent and gory. Certainly not family entertainment. The last few minutes were completely absurd suggesting a ridiculous sequel. This just spoiled what would have been a very satisfying ending. I hope this sequel is never made, it would just spoil what on its own would have been an excellent entertainer. There was no need to end with this suggestion of a sequel it just spoiled the movie completely. I would have rated this 8 otherwise.
Tata muta muntii (2021)
Movie with no ending wasted my time
The movie was slow and boring. I kept watching because the scenario was interesting. Also the locations were beautiful. I found the lead character highly dislikable. I really wanted to know how this movie was going to end so I continued watching until the greatly disappointing end of the movie, but no end to the story. I was actually angry with myself for not checking the reviews before committing to watch this annoying movie. Why would someone make a movie that ends so abruptly, surely any sensible person would realize that this would upset an audience. If the producers thought that they had made a movie that resolved character development and that somehow the audience would realize that the characters had developed sufficiently during the course of the movie and that the audience would be content if the movie ended as it did, then in they were terribly wrong. Waste of time! Watch something else.
Dave Chappelle: The Dreamer (2023)
GOAT
Chappelle proclaims himself as the greatest of all time. I believe this may be true. His presence and charisma on stage is second to none. His storytelling is compelling and you hang on his every word. In this special he crafts out his jokes as stories and a couple of the punchlines are just comedy genius. Comedians make fun of themselves or others. Chappelle admits he likes punching down on others. So, you either going to love his jokes or hate the man. Personally, I am not offended by comedians. They do what they do to get a laugh. And as Chappelle states, its a stand-up set; its not meant to be taken seriously. He is, in my opinion, one of the best storytelling stand up comedians. This special is a masterclass of stand up comedy and I appreciate it for that. Looking forward to the next one.
Predestination (2014)
Chicken or the egg paradox
This is my first review with spoilers. I want to save you the trouble of experiencing an idiotic movie disguised as a good one. The 2 stars are for the excellent performances and the high production value. The rest is disappointing. I came across this movie on Netflix and decided to watch it because of its high ratings and good reviews here. I endured the long and boring dialogue scene at the beginning waiting for the movie to get better. It got interesting but then the ending was like a slap in the face to anyone with any common sense. Here's what makes no sense to me: The main character is a time travelling agent that was born a female but also has hidden male anatomy. After giving birth to a baby she conceived with here future male self she was surgically converted to a male. The baby she gave birth to is herself. One more thing....she is also hunting herself, a serial bomber, to stop herself from bombing the city and killing thousands. So, her male self tracks down the serial bomber self and kills that self. Now you can make an informed decision on whether you want to watch this nonsense.
The Honeymoon (2023)
An honest review
I really wanted this movie to be better than it actually was and my 8 rating is generous. The good: Characters are great, and fun and well acted. Production value is as good as any movie. The script and story is good. The bad: The pace is all wrong. The movie is too drawn out and at times feels tedious. Some of the music choices are annoying and there are too many musical interludes that are unnecessary. Verdict: Its a decent movie that could have been much better. I think if the movie was cut down to 90 mins it would have been much more entertaining. The drawn out scenes made the movie less funny. Thoughts: I would have loved to see a 90 minutes version of this movie. It would have been great! Also, please make more movies like this, it's very welcome. Finally, Please Please Please make a Hangover like sequel to this movie. It would be great fun to see these characters again in that kind of movie!
Paradise (2023)
Gem....don't miss this
I found this movie very entertaining. I can't understand the bad reviews. One of the better movies that I have watched recently. It is definitely the most original and unique in its story and characters. I like the way the characters evolved during the story. The movie has a few good surprise moments and enough suspense to keep you interested throughout. The story is not predictable and some of the twists were unexpected and completely reasonable within the scenarios. So, that's an achievement by the filmmakers. The action sequences and production are on par with some of the best Hollywood blockbusters. There is really nothing negative about this movie. Its simply an interesting, unique and entertaining Sci-Fi movie that's way better than average. It's also a story of love and betrayal. I highly recommend this movie. Don't miss this because of other bad reviews.
Fast X (2023)
Could have been great
I don't understand the bad reviews. If you watched the previous FF movies, then you know what to expect. So you should not watch this movie if you have not enjoyed the previous FF movies. Fans of the franchise watch these movies because we enjoy the over-the-top action, over-the-top vehicles and the escapism entertainment. No FF movie is aiming to win an Oscar. I highly recommend watching this movie in a cinema; there are some amazing action sequences that you will enjoy best on the big screen. The cast is superb. All the characters are back. The sound track is awesome as usual. So there is nothing lacking in this FF movie. However....... I was upset that this movie was not resolved. It ends on a cliffhanger. I was not aware going to watch this movie that there would be no ending to this movie. I hate watching movies that are released in parts. You have to wait for the next movie to see what happens next. Why????. This story was not so captivating that it had to be multiple parts. So the movie was good right up until it ended on a cliffhanger. Big thumbs down for this. So, except for the ending the movie was good and enjoyable. Would have been great if they had just taken 15 minutes to end the story properly. No one wants to watch a FF movie in parts. What were they thinking? Ruined a potentially great movie. If they had advertised this movie as Fast X part 1 then I would not have gone to watch this. So, for that reason I can rate this at the most 7.
65 (2023)
A good entertainer
This was a good sci fi and dinosaur movie mix. Its the future colliding with the past. "Aliens" from the future crash-land on pre-historic earth. A unique story told from the perspective of the "aliens". Its intriguing, thrilling and has a lot of action. Some people may be put off this movie by the small cast. But I assure you, the number of pre-historic creatures in this movie more than make up for this. Also, its worth mentioning that the CGI is very good, so this does enhance the movie experience. Even the space ship design was very cool. The scene in the cave, I thought, was a bit dragged out (pun intended). Otherwise, the movie was well paced and intense. The acting was superb, the dinosaurs were scary and story was convincing. This was a good entertaining movie. Expectations met.
Hunger (2023)
Delicious
This movie is fresh and fantastic. So many western movies misrepresent Thailand. Thailand is a wonderful country rich in culture and tradition. Anyone who has visited Thailand knows that the food there is awesome. The country is abundant with restaurants both informal, street side and formal, top notch. Thai people love their food. So this movie is long overdue. Previously I have only come across martial art movies and comedy horrors from Thailand, so this movie was a pleasant surprise. The production value is second to none. The acting is outstanding. This is an Oscar worthy movie. The movie works on so many levels. There are scenes in this movie that I have never seen before. The story is a full circle emotional journey. Its about compassion, empathy and ambition. Its deep and moving. Thank you Netflix for bringing this story to the world, please keep bringing us movies from all around the world. I highly recommend this movie, if you are a mature viewer, you are in for a tasty treat!
Jim Jefferies: High & Dry (2023)
Very disappointing
I was looking forward to this special. And I was so very disappointed. Only about 20 minutes of decent new material. The rest is just vulgar and not funny. Definitely the worst special he has done. High and dry is a very apt title has he definitely has run out of new good material. It was very difficult to watch and I persisted hoping it would get better but unfortunately it just got worse and I was glad when it ended. I used to recommend his specials to others. I will no longer be doing that. The jokes have gotten progressively worse, more vile and unnecessarily vulgar. After watching this special I can confidently say I am no longer a fan. Its a pity because his earlier specials were brilliant. This was just awful.
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
Entertainment!!!
This film seems to have reintroduced the world to Indian cinema. RRR has with its extraordinary storytelling and visuals seems to have captured a new audience for Indian cinema. I have been fortunate to have enjoyed the films of both Hollywood and Bollywood. This is definitely not the best movie to have come out from India. India has produced some pure movie gems. Indian movies are a celebration of life. Like RRR, Indian movies take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and leave you satisfied, like you have enjoyed a tasty meal. It's fulfilling entertainment. Indian movies make you want to dance, fight, laugh and cry. RRR is that definition of Indian entertainment. I think Bollywood has been stuck in a rut for a while. RRR has revitalized Indian cinema and shown me that there are alternatives to the Bollywood bore. RRR is entertaining from the first frame to the last. Visually it is just stunning. Its over the top, but Indian movies usually don't take themselves to seriously, Indian movies are made to entertain. RRR is an entertainer par excellence. The only small criticism I have is that I don't think Alia Bhatt was suitable for her role. Her performance was poor in the context of this film. Bollywood is Hindi cinema, RRR is not from Bollywood. So RRR makes a huge statement: Indian cinema is not just Bollywood! RRR is the savior of Indian cinema and deserves every accolade it gets!
Pathaan (2023)
Nonsensical
This was bad.... Incoherent story...even confusing at times. Some cringeworthy dialogue and acting. Illogical action sequences. Poor editing. Glaring continuity errors. However, the actors look good and the movie is visually stunning. But that is all that's good. The fact that most of it is shot like a fashion shoot and that the actors, for the most part, are barely clothe is embarrassing and an insult to the audience. This movie assumes that most people want to watch their stars on screen half-naked and macho and that the story and logic does not really matter. This movie is a testament to the fact that stars can abuse their stardom and studios have enough money to promote nonsense to such a degree that people will pay to watch it. The fact that this movie exists and is successful is an indictment on Indian cinema. Shameful.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (2023)
Average, Its about a slap
Its an average stand-up show. I think the hype is about what happened at the Oscars. Will Smith slapped him because he made an inappropriate comment about Smith's wife and now everyone wants to know what Rock has to say about it because he was quiet all along. His response does not seek to make amends but rather is just a lashing out. There is some rather harsh and very nasty comments made about the Smiths. It leaves me with very little sympathy for Rock and frankly I started thinking maybe he deserved what he got. He just makes more inappropriate comments and tramples on the already fallen star of Smith. Everyone has their problems in life and some people just need to be left alone to deal with them. Rock is just milking this situation at the Smiths expense. As expected Rock's attack on Smith is the climax of the show. Life is unpredictable and I think one day Smith will have the last laugh. With regards to the rest of the show it was just average. I think he repeats too much. He repeats the beginning of every joke unnecessarily. Most of the show is a high pitched rant with some good jokes but nothing memorable. He's definitely not in the same league as Chappelle but if you are a fan of Chris Rock then you will probably enjoy this. It gets 3 stars from me as an unbiased fair assessment of the show. My biases, as stated above, would cause me to rate it even lower.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Good movie
I always look forward to a M. Night movie. I know its going to be something different and unique. Knock at the Cabin is just that. I don't know anything about the book but as a movie I found it vey entertaining. The movie is structured very much like Signs. There are a few characters but they all are interesting and contribute meaningfully to the plot. The characters in this movie are all very intriguing. There is a lot I liked about this movie. The casting is excellent. The location is convincing. I particularly liked the fact that the movie is not unnecessarily gory. The suspense is built up from the very beginning and sustained throughout the movie. Like the main characters, the audience is also kept in limbo trying to figure out what's happening. It's not the masterpiece that Sixth Sense is but its definitely worth going out to watch. Looking forward to the next Night movie.
See How They Run (2022)
Zero intrigue or suspense
I watched this movie because of the high ratings. The movie starts of good and then gets progressively worse. There are some good scenes up front but as the movie ended I was thinking that I should have watched something else. I must admit that I know nothing of Agatha Christies' "The mouse trap". This may be a prerequisite for enjoying this movie; I don't know. For me, as a whodunit, this movie fails. I was expecting to be kept guessing and to be surprised by a clever reveal. This was not the case. At one point, the movie did start getting interesting with the scenario around the detective's ex-wife. But that ended quickly and inexplicably. The reveal of the killer was sudden and way out. The ending was also cheesy. A missed opportunity in my opinion.
Shotgun Wedding (2022)
Disappointing
Was looking forward to watching this. Thought it was going to be a fun time at the movies. It's just silly stupid. Waste of a good cast. By the way, J Lo's character was really annoying. Did not care much for the other characters either. Was that a smirk on J Lo's face for most of the movie? It did not seem like the actors put any effort into making this movie seem even remotely believable either. If tongue in cheek was the intention, then they nailed it. But it did not work. The movie was not funny at all. I could identify the parts of the movie that were supposed to be funny but it simply was not. For example, there's a scene were J Lo faints multiple times at the sight of blood, it was done in a way that was clearly intended to be funny, but it's just stupid. It reminded me of children trying to be funny. Cringeworthy. Most of the movie is like this, it's just stupid, silly and not funny. I like escapism entertainment; When it comes to movies like this, I don't care if the story is believable. But there is very little entertainment value in this movie. I was just waiting for it to end. My 3 stars is very generous and it's due to nostalgic bias I guess.
The Fabelmans (2022)
Why?
Its a movie about Spielberg's parents and his high school days. Nothing extraordinary. Only a great director could make this story interesting. After giving us so many great movies I guess he deserves this self-indulgence. His father was a pioneer in electronics, his mother was a bit of a crazy artist. They were incompatible, had marital problems and eventually separated. Steven was always passionate about making movies and was also bullied at school because he was a jew. An average story elevated by the skills of a great cast and the great film director. I don't understand why he wanted to tell this story. Some stories are better left untold. I think this is one of those. Its watchable but disappointing.
Man vs Bee (2022)
Mr Bee-an - Just superb
As a fan of the Mr Bean series, I was really looking forward to this. I was not disappointed. Its just very funny and thoroughly entertaining. It's simply an evolved Mr Bean character. He talks, has a family and is dealing with life issues. The plot is simple and its all in the title. This one is for Mr Bean fans. If you don't enjoy Mr Bean then you probably won't enjoy this. Otherwise, it's just fantastic! Only one criticism : Why is the first episode 20 mins and the rest about 10mins each? I found this odd. It should have just been 5x 20mins episodes. I found the interruptions between the short episodes annoying. Nonetheless, I enjoyed this and want to see more.
Spiderhead (2022)
Fresh
I rate this one 7 because its different and I haven't seen anything similar in a long time. It's not a great movie but there's also nothing to criticize. It's fun, intriguing, thrilling, there's also some action and a dose of comedy. This movie doesn't take itself too seriously and that's the spirit in which it should be viewed. Its just enjoyable.
All the Old Knives (2022)
Great cast but Disappointing movie
Only watched this one half way. Just gave up on it. It's too slow and the story moves back and forth way too much. The movie opens with an exciting plane hijacking scene and you think this is going to be good. Then the movie just settles into a long and boring talk fest , constantly jumping between the past and present. I was expecting a much better movie considering the cast. I don't understand the high ratings, unless the second half is exceptionally good. Anyway, I can assure you the first half is just boring. I experienced no thrill in this thriller. It's hard to believe that a movie with such a great cast could not keep me interested. It's a pity, but I have no desire to watch the rest of this one.
The Last Thing He Wanted (2020)
Decent movie - Worth watching
Missed opportunity, could have been a great movie. Some scripting, editing and pacing issues make the story harder to follow that it should have been. Its an intriguing story with a great cast. This movie is a good watch but it could have been a blockbuster. I am disappointed that its not.
Calibre (2018)
Overrated
None of the characters are likable. All of them make very bad decisions. The trailer gives away the entire plot except for the ending. And the ending isn't very good. The acting and production is good, but for a serious thriller there are too many plot issues. Its just a sombre movie. Its watchable but not enjoyable.
Sentinelle (2021)
GOOD movie
Don't know why so many poor reviews on this movie. This movie is good and enjoyable. Its just escapism movie entertainment and it entertains very well. There are some serious issues raised like PTSD, drugs and rape but the movie just highlights them. This movie doesn't pretend to be serious and it isn't. There are plot holes but this is the consequence of the pacing, so the story moves along nicely and that's satisfying. I watched it and enjoyed it, so I recommend it.
Seal Team Eight: Behind Enemy Lines (2014)
Just bad direction.........
This was amongst my unwatched dvds...from a bargain bin....finally watched it. Wasn't expecting much.....didn't expect to watch all of it.....but I did end up watching till the end. The best action sequences are at the end. The rest of the movie is mediocre. Mainly due to poor directing and camerawork. I watched the dvd extras and found the problem. The director is also the director of photography(DOP). There was spectacular action but it was covered crudely by too many cameras. Personally, I don't think its a good idea for a director to shout action and then run around with his eyes stuck in a camera viewfinder. This movie is an excellent example of why a director should not do that. Some of the action sequences are too long with too many different camera angles of the same action. The acting is mediocre, most probably due to lack of direction. The story was interesting. The action, although covered poorly, was good. This could have been a good movie but sadly its just mediocre.
Bajo cero (2021)
Unique Action thriller
This movie is good enough to forgive its flaws.....Yes, there are some things in the movie that don't make sense. However, the story and characters are interesting enough so that it does not distract from enjoying the movie. Prisoners trapped inside an armored truck, fighting against the elements while being hunted by a mysterious killer; it is a very interesting scenario. The errors are easy to overlook as this is a well executed thriller that keeps you interested. Its a good movie. Recommended.
